Mac OS X Lion thumb drive clean install

I just recently bought the Mac OS X Lion thumb drive, so that I can quickly upgrade my current version (10.5.8). I understand that I have to do a clean install and I have already backed up my hard drive. When I open the thumb drive it says that I cannot install 10.7 with my current version. How do I get this to work? I have tried to search for the hard drive photo ( .dmg file) under what most have said is the "Sharedresources" folder....except my thumb drive doesnt have a folder called shared resources under "contents."

  • How do i completely get rid of my Macintosh HD so I can start fresh and install mac os x Lion thumb drive

I just purchased the thumb drive for OS X Lion. As far as I know, because I only have 10.5.8 and I do not want to purchase Snow Lpd. I can just delete everything and start from scratch (according to an employee at the Apple Store). The problem is that I have no idea how to "start from scratch", its not as easy as dragging my Macintosh HD icon from my desktop to the trash can. HELP!

If you really want to start fresh and you have ANY PERSONAL files already backed up, or you don't care about them, stick the thumb drive in the USB port and reboot the system. Hold down the Option key when you hear the apple startup sound, let it go after about 15-20 second. That will give you a screen where you select which drive to boot off of, select the thumb drive. Once that has booted go to Disk Utility and RE-Partition the drive. That will wipe all information off it. Once that is done close Disk Utility and you will be back at the original screen. Select Install OS X Lion.
    Have fun.

  • Lion thumb-drive for my 2008 macbook pro WONT INSTALL!!!!!!!!!!

I just bought the $69 Lion thumb-drive for my 2008 macbook pro (still running leopard) and when I insert the drive, the Lion Install screen opens up and it say "You cannot use this version of the application Install Mac OS X Lion with this version of Man OS X."
The Guy at the Apple store said it should just install! I hope somebody can help me through this, I shouldn't have to pay another ******* $30 to run something that was supossed to work in the first place!

Does that mean I will have to re-install all apps? Will I have to do this regardless??
I found this article written before the Apple Lion thumb drive came out and it references the quick but techie way at the bottom of article of altering the file /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

    Will this work?

  • Have leopard can I with using lion thumb drive, install without first install snow leoapard

Have leopard, can I with using lion thumb drive, install without first install snow leoapard ?

The requirement for Snow Leopard was for downloading Lion from the app store. With Lion on the thumb drive, you can upgrade without SL.

  • Does Apple still sell Lion thumb drives

My Mac Pro 1.1 came with Tiger but now has Leapord. I would like to jump Snow Leapord and go straight to Lion. If I don't want to reinstall all my software (FCP, Photoshop, and more) must I use the Lion thumb drive? If so, can I buy it from Apple?

With regard to your applications that may be PowerPC, here is a post I assembled for another:
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions, or find alternative software that will open your data files;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and continue to operate the PowerPC apps:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

  • Need Advice Fast About Lion Thumb Drive Please!

Here's my situation, I've got several Macs that are on Snow Leopard that can upgrade to Lion but not Mountain Lion, I've been looking around for the Lion thumb drive, but can only find it on eBay, or some pirated version on Amazon.com.
    Here's the one I'm looking at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140823936141
Can anyone confirm that I can use this Lion thumb drive on as many Macs as I want? I can't really find it written definitively anywhere on the net that I can use it on a unlimited number of Macs. Thanks, please reply ASAP.

You can make a USB thumb drive with the Recovery HD only on it and use it to boot into the Recovery HD to download/install Lion on the Macs you own or control. The Lion Recovery Disk Assistant is used to create this thumb drive. It does not have the full installer. You can install the assistant on any Mac that is running Lion.

  • Lion Thumb Drive is now in the Apple Store

The Lion Thumb Drive is now in the Apple Store for $69. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
The System requirements say that you need to be at 10.6.6 but that seems to be a leftover from downloading it from the App Store. When you click on "See all system requirements" it takes you to the pre thumb drive page.
There are questions in the "Questions and Answers" section but no answers yet. http://store.apple.com/us/questions/product/MD256Z/A?mco=MjQ1NDU5NTU

    Here is an interesting note:
    Important Note
When you install OS X Lion using the USB thumb drive, you will not be able to reinstall OS X Lion from Lion Recovery. You will need to use the USB thumb drive to reinstall OS X Lion.

  • Lion Thumb Drive

Can anyone confirm if the Lion thumb drive from Apple will allow a fresh install (as opposed to the download from the App Store only being available as an upgrade to Snow Leopard)?
It does list system requirements on the main page:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
But, in that section, there is a link at the bottom to "See all system requirements".  That section seems to be the standard Lion page which lists 10.6.6 or later as a requirement (which I can only assume is because the App Store was released in 10.6.6):
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
I'm like 98% sure you can do a full fresh install from the USB drive, but I'd like to be sure as I've been recommending this as an option for people.

It's in the store but don't try to update from 10.5.8, it doesn't work.

  • Lion Thumb Drive version number higher than .0?

I know that you can run software update to get the latest updates to your Lion OS after installing it (from the USB drive) if there are any available, but it's always nice to do a basic install with a higher than 10.7.0 (for example) just to get past a few of the bugs fixed in updates on that initial install.  In Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard Apple would update the basic installer disc's from time to time in the retail box, I was wondering if anyone had bought a Lion Thumb drive installer USB stick with a version higher than 10.7 ?
PS I do know you can use the App Store and get the latest version as a download, but I am interested right now in the physcial product.

AFAIK, only 10.7.0 is available and there's no updater for the stick. Send Apple http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

  • HT3986 i installed win 7 on my mac book, and the sound driver was installed successfully, but i don't hear any sound, please help

i installed win 7 on my mac book, and the sound driver was installed successfully, but i don't hear any sound, please help

Is the volume muted? Click on the volume icon in the system tray to see if it shows as muted. If that's the case, I know of a workaround to fix this because if you unmute the speakers now, the condition will come back when you reboot your computer. I don't know the exact steps off the top of my head at the moment as I'm not in front of my machine. Check this first and reply if muting was the problem and I will detail the steps needed to fix the problem.

  • Mac OS X Lion THUMB USB

    Hello.
I want to buy the Mac OS X Lion Thumb USB, from the Apple Store.
Here's a silly question I would like to be answered: what comes with the Thumb USB? Apple Stickers? Printed information?
Does it come properly packaged? Since I'm from Portugal, ir requires a amount of time to arrive... just wondering if it will come in a box...
    Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the quick answer... but...
What else comes in the box? (Just out of curiosity, please?)
    Thank you very much!

  • New Mac Pro with Lion and can't install FCP.

I got a new Mac Pro with Lion and can't install FCP that worked fine in SL.  Is it not compatible?  Is it really a PowerPC program???  I'm a videographer and rely on this software and to spend $300 to continue to use it after spending a lot more for this software 4 years ago!  Tell me this is not the case and there is a solution to installing FCP.

How to run FCP 6 (FCS 2) under Lion.
The installer for FCP 6 (FCS 2) is a PPC app. The Programs themselves are Intel. If your trying to install FCP 6 (FCS 2) this work-around will work...
First you need to install Rosetta from your Snow Leopard OS installation disc:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/27987.html
After doing that you can install FCP 6 (FCS 2). Remember, after installing FCP 6 (FCS 2) you need to apply the updates. This has been discuss many times in the Final Cut Studio forum.
If your trying to install FCP version 5.1 (FCS 1) (a PPC app) and below your out of luck....

  • Can I download Yosemite onto a thumb drive and install it on snow leopard later

can I download Yosemite onto a thumb drive and install it on snow leopard later

    Yes.
Create a bootable installer for OS X Mavericks or Yosemite - Apple Support
Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy and paste the following command line in its entirety into the Terminal window.
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite\ Developer\ Preview.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite\ Developer\ Preview.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN, enter admin password (will not echo to the window) then press RETURN again.
You need to have the installer in your Applications folder or change the paths in the above command line.
