My operating system is Mac OS X 10.6.8 and when I'm surfing the web, it tells me I need to update my browser however when I check for updates, nothing comes up. What do I need to do to get Mac OS X Lion v10.7?
Software update will only bring you up to the current level of the system you are using - you are at the maximum for Snow Leopard. To get Lion or higher you will have to go to the Mac App Store in Applications and purchase it there (Yosemite is free). You will need to check that your Mac meets the requirements and you should particularly note that PPC programs such as AppleWorks will not run in Lion or above.
The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price (though it's reported to have been removed from sale in some countries so may well cease to be available generally) but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Yosemite (10.10.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Yosemite are:
OS X v10.6.8 or later
2GB of memory
8GB of available space
and the supported models are:
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Yosemite is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications). Mountain Lion can be obtained the Online Apple Store. (Mavericks is no longer available.)
If the problem is only with Safari and you are otherwise happy with Snow Leopard you could switch to FireFox (free) - the latest version of that will run in Snow Leopard. -
Mac OS X Lion (v10.7) Thumb Drive
Hello,
On the page for purchasing the new Mac OS X Lion (v10.7) which this link leads to: http://store.apple.com/au/product/MD256Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA (Note: THIS LINK LEADS TO THE AUSTRALIAN STORE, HERE IS A LINK TO THE UNITED STATES STORE: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256), there is this:
Important Note
When you install OS X Lion using the USB thumb drive, you will not be able to reinstall OS X Lion from Lion Recovery. You will need to use the USB thumb drive to reinstall OS X Lion.
I wanted to know if I could use this thumb drive to recover Lion when I have used the Mac App Store for the original installation?
Thank-you.

Do I upload the following update of 9/29/14 for OS X Lion v10.7.5, OS X Lion Server v10.7.5, OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.5, OS X Mavericks v10.9.5 as I ALREADY AM USING 10.9.5 which indicates Sept 18 update - should I seek it out and load it? It DID NOT come to me as a new update - I was just reading about updates an duplaods in MAC RUMOR, APPLE INSIDER THAN CLICKE DON THE Apple KB. Yes or no? THANKS
Most Mac users are not at risk. I suspect that the next scheduled security update will include this bug fix. I suspect it was released as a downloadable patch for Mac users that do things that would put them at risk and for Mac users that are worried (perhaps needlessly).
To be at risk, you need to run a web server AND that web server must be using CGI scripts that either directly use bash scripts or use a web server that invokes a CGI script via a bash command line hand-off. Very few consumer Mac owners do this, and Mavericks does not include the ability to easily start a web server.
Or you need to configure your Mac to allow anonymous ssh (Secure Shell) logins. This would be someone that is perhaps running a public GIT Hub source code control system. Very few Mac owners ever do anything like this.
You have enabled the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) web Interface via a Terminal Session command line command (you would know if you did this).
If you do not do any of these things, it is very unlikely you will be at risk for the ShellShock bash bug.
NOTE: This bug is very serious business for commercial web servers running on Unix platforms, so I'm trying to downplay the seriousness, just that you have to be a member of a select class of Mac users to be at risk with your Mac OS X system. -

I am running mountain lion os 10.8.5 on mac book pro mid 2012 build. If I upgrade to Mavericks will MS Office programs still work? There does not appear to be an updated version of MS Office for Mac past 2011 that I bought last year and am using now. Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks.Office 2008 and 2011 will run on Mavericks, but you may not be able to get the installer for it at this time.

Is MAC OS X v10.6.8 same as MAC OS X Snow Leopard. Since i want to download MAC OS X LION can it be downloaded on my mac which has MAC OS X v10.6.8 ??
Yes, assuming you can run Lion, & can deal with no more Save or Save As... functions...
Lion/101.7 System requirements
• x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
• At least 2GB of memory, (I say 4GB)
• Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
• At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, (I say 40GB at least)
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications. -
My mac mini is not updating its software to OSX Lion v10.7.5, which I need for iCloud. I would like to use iCloud on my desktop along with my iphone and ipad but the auto updates are only upto 10.6.8.
You need to get the newer version from the Mac App Store.

HT3854 Not applicable in Mac OS X Server v10.8 (Mountain Lion)?
This chart seems not applicable in Mac OS X Server v10.8.4 (Mountain Lion) [Server v2.1.1].
I have 32GB of RAM but the maxproc limit is still 2500, no matter setting via launchctl (the new way), sysctl (the old way), ulimit (the soft way), or both of them.
Commands applied:
$ sudo launchctl limit maxproc 2501
$ sudo launchctl limit
cpu unlimited unlimited
filesize unlimited unlimited
data unlimited unlimited
stack 8388608 67104768
core 0 unlimited
rss unlimited unlimited
memlock unlimited unlimited
maxproc 2500 2500
maxfiles 1048576 1048576
$ sudo sysctl -w kern.maxproc=2500
kern.maxproc: 2500 -> 2500
$ sudo sysctl -w kern.maxproc=2501
kern.maxproc: 2500
Files also created / modified accordingly:
/etc/launchd.conf
/etc/sysctl.conf
When I see the source code of the Darwin kernel (unix_startup.c), it works like it is specified here. But I still cannot I wonder whether the kernel calls srv_setup() and bsd_srv_setup() properly. I would like to find a way (via systemsetup command, modifying com.apple.Boot.plist, applying NVRAM parameter, etc.) so that bsd_srv_setup() would be called with a larger "scale" parameter. Or perhaps is there any way to compile a custom kernel from source and replace the system one?Gil,
The command with one parameter (known as "both" in manpage) is the same as the one with two parameters (known as "soft" and "hard" respectively in manpage) - it will be treated like supplying two parameters using the same value:
$ sudo launchctl limit
Password:
cpu unlimited unlimited
filesize unlimited unlimited
data unlimited unlimited

core 0 unlimited
rss unlimited unlimited
memlock unlimited unlimited
maxproc 2500 2500

$ sudo launchctl limit maxproc 1000

By the way, my iMac is running Mac OS X 10.8.4 and the manpage is dated "1 May, 2009" in case if it matters. -
Sluggish Flash Builder 4.5.1 performance on Mac OS X Lion
I recently acquired an iMac with Core i7 3.4GHz CPU, 8GB of RAM. The system is brand new with nothing but Flash Builder installed. I have similar setup on Windows which is running on an 3-yo laptop sporting Win7 x64, 1.6GHz low voltage Core 2 Duo CPU and 8GB of RAM. Since the laptop is my primary computer, so it is constantly running other apps such as Outlook, Doc, etc.
My project consists of 3 library projects and two application projects on Mac. I have set the IDE to turn off automatic build as building the application takes more than a few seconds. To my surprise, I notice any changes made to the application or library, Mac OS X takes significantly longer time to compile the application.
I wonder if this is a known issue on Mac OS X Lion, or if there is anyway to improve Flex compiler performance on Mac.
TangentYes, I have EXACTLY the same problem - except that my project is much larger and FB on Lion never gets to finish!
Going back to Snow Leopard would be a big bind - anyone in adobe care to shed some light on this? -
My Mac is a OSX 10.5.8 and i want to upgrade to Lion v10.7.2 Do I have to also get Snow Leopard? Can the be purchased together?
Yes you have to purchase Snow Leopard first. Once you have it installed then update it to 10.6.8 using the 10.6.8 Update Combo. Once you have updated and thorougly tested your system then purchase the Lion upgrade from the Mac App Store and follow the on-screen prompts.
At the very minimum make sure your computer meets the System Requirements for Lion and make sure you have all your applications up-to-date. As you may (or may not) know PPC based apps will NOT run under Lion so please check your apps to see that they will run under Lion. Please look at the article link below for instructions on how to tell if they will or not.

Mac OS X Server v10.7 does not show the ethernet link aggregated interface i created. Does Lion server support ethernet link aggregated interfaces?
Thanks for responding Cold--
Hardware: Mac Pro 3.0 GHZ quad core xeon
I read the link but it still does not explain why the aggregated dual ethernet interface does not show up in the Network tab of the hardware section Lion Server. I was able to see it on the network and looks to be using a single static IP that I assigned. My concern was that is this supported and will it allow for failover and double performance of the single network interface.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again! -
