Mac OS X Mail Server Questions

Hi,
I'm going to buy a server soon to host a website and email, and until recently, I was set on a 2.8 GHz windows server for $579. But now I'm starting to lean towards a Mac Mini server, despite its higher cost and lower CPU speed. I have a few questions, though:
1. Is a 2.5 GHz Mini capable of running a mail and web server simultaneously without slow downs?
2. Is OS X Server's Squirrel-mail webmail comparable to Microsoft Exchange's Outlook Web Access? Does anyone have any screen shots?
Thanks.

1. Is a 2.5 GHz Mini capable of running a mail and web server simultaneously without slow downs?
That depends on the load. Once you exceed about 10,000 active users/mailboxes and about one million page views per day you'll probably start to notice. Seriously.
2. Is OS X Server's Squirrel-mail webmail comparable to Microsoft Exchange's Outlook Web Access? Does anyone have any screen shots?
I've never used OWA so I have no basis for comparison, sorry. Personally, I tend to think the webmail interface is a little crude, but it does the job. No web interface, though, is a substitute for a real mail client IMHO.

  • Migrate from Exchange Server 2011 to Mac OSX Lion Mail Server

    Hi all,
I'm looking to migrate from Exchange Server 2011 to Mac OSX Lion Mail Server.  I work for a company with roughly 30 employees and they use exchange for mail, contacts and calendars.  We want to take full advantage of OSX Server and to completly get off of exchange.
What are the best ways to do this?  Are there any tools available to help this process?

I agree with the points made by Strontium90. If you have any PCs then Apple's mail/contacts/calendar software is a poor choice. Kerio Connect as a mail/contacts/calendar server would not only support Macs but would also do a good job supporting PCs running Outlook.
If you are going to become a pure Apple site, then you could use just the Apple software and this would be cheaper than using Kerio. For 30 users this might be a suitable solution, however even in a pure Apple environment many people prefer Kerio. For example I find Kerio much more pleasent when dealing with email addresses across multiple domains, email aliases, email group addresses, and so on. Kerio also has built-in email archiving, that is keeping a record of all emails. Kerio also provides a web-browser client for accessing email, calendar and contacts. It is worth noting that as standard Mountain Lion Server no longer includes a webmail feature. While I personally find the Kerio webclient rather ugly it does work.
There are some annoyances I have with Kerio, firstly they have always charged a 'maintenance' fee for their software. This provided access to software updates, and in the past also provided access to Kerio technical support. Unfortunately they now only let you make two (2) support cases per year for that cost, and you now have to pay extra for any more cases. Also while they added support for EWS (Exchange Web Service) to allow using Outlook 2011 for Mac as a supported email client, they did a poor job of this so that it does not work properly with any other EWS compatible client. This means it will not work in EWS mode with Apple Mail, nor with Outlook for Windows. While there are other ways to connect these other clients, this seems a foolish move and there have been plenty of requests to fix this.
Apple's Mail client uses EWS to connect to a 'real' MS Exhange server.

  • Migrating From Exchange To OSX Mail Server Question

I'm switching my small business to a Mac based office from Windows. I'm thinking about OSX Server (or Snow Leopard Server when it comes out). I'm comfortable with everything about it, but not being much of an IT person, I have a question about the Mail Server.
We have 7 employees. Each will have his own email account. We will also have one "group" email account that we will all need to access. On my current Exchange server, it's no problem. I haven't read anything about the Mac Servers that allows this from ALL the clients. Can this be done with the Mac servers and if so, where can I read about it?
I will also need to be able to manage the server remotely. I assume there's no problem with that, yes?
Sorry for what may seem to be naive questions, but this whole point is to be able to get rid of the PC crap and all the complications that come with it. Thank you in advance for your help.

You can set Access Control Lists on mailboxes allowing other users to have access to them. So, your Group email account would be an eighth user per se, and the other seven users would see this user's Inbox in their folder list.
Note that there is no GUI for doing this. You either need to use the command line tools to configure this or a third party GUI tool called SirAdmin.
Yes, OS X Server can be managed remotely, using a variety of tools ranging in complexity and power. It is UNIX after all

  • Why is mail creating folders on my mac AND my mail server?

strange things happening, please tell me i am not alone.
i have an IMAP account set up in mail
preferences>accounts>mailbox behaviors i have all unchecked except for 'move deleted messages to the trash'
everytime i open mail, or even while its open, all these mailboxes get created. i have an inbox inside my inbox, which has a deleted messages folder inside that. plus another deleted messages folder under the 'on my mac' heading in the sidebar. then there is another set of folders below that: deleted messages, drafts, sent and trash. what is going on here?
and to top it off, if i log into my mail server, there are two new folders, one called 'deleted messages' and another called 'apple mail to do'
i dont even know where to begin.... when i delete the folders, they keep coming back...
should i delete the 'mail' folder in the user library and the com.apple.mail.plist file and start over?

    Hi Geoff,
It sounds like your mail service provider has created some default folders in your account e.g. sent, trash etc. Mail cannot know which folders to use so it creates it's own e.g. Apple Mail To Do, Deleted Messages.
If you look at the sidebar in Mail after you create the account, you should see a section (probably near the bottom) that has the name of your IMAP account. Click on the disclosure triangle and you should see the folders that your mail service provider set up for you. If you would prefer to use one of those then choose Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For > Drafts/Sent/Trash/Junk as appropriate. You will then find that the folders Mail created in the other parts of the sidebar get moved and replaced by the ones you selected. You can safely delete the folders created by Mail afterwards if you like (move any messages you want to keep first though).
Mail will still create Apple Mail To Do.
Finally, the INBOX within the INBOX sounds like you need your IMAP Path Prefix set properly in the preferences for your account. Put the words that appear in square brackets in there.
    Hope that helps.

  • Mail Server Question

Hey everyone, I'm having trouble with my mail server. More specifically SMTP. When I checked the logs, this is the error I got for Postfix: fatal: bind: private/smtpd. Does anyone know what that means? What should I do to fix it? Thanks for your help!

    Hello, Welcome to discussions.
You will need to contact your school's technical support department and obtain this information. Some schools do provide a local tech support page that shows you how to setup email in email based programs or cell phones. On this page it will also typically provide the incoming and outgoing server that is needed to gain access to your email.
But please check with your tech support team at school as certain restrictions may apply based on the rules they may have set in place.

  • Hotmail incoming mail server question

What is the Hotmail incoming mail server? Thanks.

What do you mean you want to change that?
Does that not work in your Mail? The incoming server for your Hotmail account in the Mail.app is this: hotmail.com
It should work just fine when you type that in.

  • Outgoing mail server questions

I am using a pop 3 account for email. for some reason my mail is stuck in my outbox. What are the settings for the outgoing mail server?

That server option seems to be something that popped up with the 2.0 update. Perhaps this might be helpful? It's a link that walks you through e-mail set up.

  • Mac Mini as mail server

Okay, Im a mac noob.  But as the IT Guy for a small company I have been tasked with moving our email from a hosted email provider to inhouse.
We have about 85 email accounts.
My question is Looking at the new mac mini with lion it seems to have enough horsepower to handle the load
but disk space is an issue.  My users are Medical equipment imaging techs and email HUGE dicom images back and forth all of the time.
The internal storage on the mini is max'd @ 1 tb and thats not enough.
I saw the Promise Pegasus RAID with thunderbolt as an addon.  Is the performance of this device
good enough to put the user incoming mail on?

It should be fine... the new Mac mini Server with quad-core i7 has plenty of power....However, I would wait for lion server issues to be worked out. I currently upgraded my Macmini Sever to Lion Server to test out before upgrading my clients servers. There are bugs even when doing a fresh install. Hopefully Apple will be able to fix them on the upcoming months.

  • Dictamus smtp mail server question - help!

I'm just wondering if anyone else is having trouble using Dictamus on their iphone for sending dictations via email.
I recently put OS 5 on my iphone and I have upgraded to Lion on my imac. I recorded a dictation the other day on my phone and I tell it to send and it looks like it does but no one is getting my dictations in their email. I have tried troubleshooting and checked my SMTP settings and they seem to be correct.
I used to be able to send dictations no problem before I uprgraded - is anyone else having this problem of their emails not being sent?
I use a me.com account and would like to use that to send the emails. I have the smtp sever set to smtp.me.com and I have also tried smtp.mail.me.com and still my emails will not go thru.
Any suggestions or help is much appreciated.

We have been getting reports from quite a few MobileMe customers who cannot send mails from Dictamus. According to our investigations, Dictamus does send those mails correctly, and the me.com SMTP server acknowledges having accepted them for delivery. This is as far as anyone can track outgoing e-mail over SMTP, so Dictamus flags the respective dictation as "shared successfully". The problem is that after that initial acknowledgement, MobileMe silently discards some Dictamus mails (not all) without notification to either sender or recipient. This can happen if either recipient or sender are on MobileMe, so sending from a MobileMe address to another mail provider is subject to this issue as well as sending from another provider to MobileMe. Therefore, we currently recommend against using MobileMe accounts for sending mails from Dictamus. We are unaware of similar problems with any of the other large e-mail providers.

  • Is there a best practice for multi location server setups including mac mail server?

    Afternoon all,
Last year I setup a client with Snow Leopard Server including hosting his mail on the server with Mac Mail Server and calendaring.  He now has plans to open other sites with the same setup, how can this be done using Mac Server?  The implementation of a new server on the new site would be straight forward my concerns / question are:
    1. How would the two servers communicate?
        a.)Do they need to communicate?
    3. How will mail across the two sites work?
a.) How will DNS work for email internally?
b.) How will DNS work for emai externally?
    4.  How will calendaring work across the two sites?
Is Mac Server the best platform for moving ahead with this type of business need?
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
    Anthony

    Camelot,
many thanks for the speedy reply.  Your comments are very helpful thank you, if I may I will give you some for information and some other questions.
The offices will be from 5 miles to 25 miles apart, the new office and ones that follow will be considered as branches of the main office for example the company name is Sunflower and it serves area 1, then new will office will serve area 2 and so on.  So in theory I could leave the main server domain and mail mx record as sunflower and then add further servers as 2.sunflower.com, 3.sunflower.com as domains and mx records? This would then provide unique mail records and users within the organisation such as [email protected] and [email protected], which doesnt look to good I would prefer all users to be name@sunflower how can this be acheived?
With regard to user activity in the whole users will be fixed but their will be floaters such as managers and the owners that may at times float from one office to the other and would beneift from logging into any machine and getting their profile.
I have thought about VPN's as I have acheieved this type of setup with Microsoft server products, I have found speed issues in some cases, how can this be acheived using OS X, are there any how to docs around?  In the Microsoft setup I acheived this using netgear VPN Firewalls which ofcourse adds an overhead, can this be acheived using OS X propietary VPN software?
So ultimatley I would prefer to have the one domain without subs "sunflower.com" and users to be able to login to their profiles from either location. The main location now will remain as headoffice and the primary location and the new will be satelites.
I hope that covers all of your other question, again many thanks for your comments and time.
    Kind Regards
    Anthony

  • .Mac Mail attempting to use a mail server I no longer have

I use AOL and .Mac mail thru the Mail program. I'm trying to send a couple mp3's to a client, and I get the message that it can't use the server "mail.purdigital.net." This server is something that was in a building I moved out of last month.
My question is, why is .Mac trying to use someone else's server and not uploading thru it's own? I have sent several large files previously this month with no problem but now it seems like a no-go. I'm constantly on different wireless networks due to work so is my only solution to start logging in thru the .Mac/Apple webpage and send from there? I hope not considering that is a bit clunky and takes up my time.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Mail keeps information about outgoing (SMTP) servers in a separate list independently of any specific mail account. The account settings just associate one of the available outgoing servers with each account. Deleting an account doesn’t remove from the list the outgoing server that was associated with it. Orphaned or dangling outgoing server entries (i.e. not associated with any account) sometimes cause weird sending problems.
Go to Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), choose Edit Server List from the popup menu, and delete any servers that shouldn’t be there. The Edit Server List panel shows the account each outgoing server is associated with.

  • Mail will not show new emails on my Mac Air but sends OK. Mail server is working

    Hello
As I said above, Mail will not show new emails on my Mac Air but sends mails OK. The Mail server is working because my iPad is receiving and displaying incoming messages.
    Your advice is most welcome.

Thunderbird successfully displays all of my e-mail accounts in the list of accounts and displays all of the inboxes correctly however it doesn't display the e-mails at my newest address in the unified inbox. To see them, I have to click on that particular e-mail accounts inbox. In every way, this account appears to be set up the same as the all the other ones. The newest e-mail account is a second account through Zoho. What do you think is the problem?

  • Make duplicate copies of Server mailboxes in Mac OS X Mail locally

I'd like to keep exactly the same IMAP mailboxes on the server as on the Mac OS X Mail's "On My Mac" Folders, and use a program to regularly make sure the contents of both remain the same. Anybody know of such a program, or how to force Mac OS X Mail to do this?

I suspect the problem is that when someone with the stature of A Brody asks a question, the rest of us mere mortals will assume they can't answer it!
How about creating mailboxes with matching names on-my-mac, then using a prog like Chronosync to one way sync the message list folders
    ~/Lib/Mail/Mac-myusername/title.imapmbox/Messages
    to
    ~/Lib/Mail/Mailboxes/title.mbox/Messages
Possible problem might be that it would be necessary to rebuild the index after each sync?
Are you wanting to do this because of paranoia (which I share) that IMAP mail is more vulnerable to being lost than on-my-mac mail?
I sleep better by having Mail set to "keep copies of messages for offine viewing" and then using Chronosync to copy the ~/Lib/Mail/Mac-myusername folder to another HD.
In theory TM should protect the IMAP mail but I had a problem recently where my IMAP folders were simply not showing up in the folder list (my personal ones that is, inbox etc were OK). I thought the unthinkable had happened and went back in time with TM to restore them....but they were missing in all the TM backups. The problem was solved by forcing a rebuild of the master index, after which the missing Mailboxes reappeared in present time and all the TM backups.
