[Mac OS X] Problems setting up L2TP VPN Connection

I recently moved from Windows to Mac OS X (10.6.6). Unfortunately this move was not so smoothly as I hoped for and I am currently facing some issues with the VPN-connection to the company I work for. As with many companies they do not have a Mac-guide and I am trying to solve this issue, but so far unsuccesful.
To access my data on the company’s server (MS TS Environment) I need to establish a L2TP-IPsec VPN connection. I used Mac OS X built in network tool and filled out all the necessary information such as vpn address, shared secret/key, password and accountname. I even double checked the information various times so no spelling errors occurred. After some seconds I receive the message that the L2TP-VPN-server does not respond.
I checked other posts already and I checked the box that sents all traffic via this VPN-connection but without any results. For a moment I doubted that the cause of this issue might be my home-network: MBA <-> Timecapsule <-> Thomson TG789 … however when I make a L2TP VPN connection using a Windows XP or Vista pc this can be done without problems (using the same network structure) so I guess it is a mac-related problem either with my MBA (Mac OSX) or with the companies servers…
I found out that using the console.app can provide me with some more information about the connection process:
- L2TP connecting to server
- IPSec connection started
- IKE Packet: transmit success.
- IKE Packet: receive success.
After a couple of attemps from the 6th message it suddenly shows:
- IKE Packet: receive failed.
- IKE Packet: transmit success.
- IKE Packet: receive failed.
-IKEv1 Phase1: maximum retransmits.
-IKE Packets Receive Failure-Rate Statistic.
And this finally results in ' IPSec connection failed'
Does anyone has an idea of what the problem might be (e.g. the settings of the MAC or the settings of the companies VPN or ???) and maybe a solution for this problem?
Many thanks from a newbie but satisfied Mac-user!

Hi, I have the same problem with the establishing VPN connection using L2TP without IPsec.

  • Why does my L2TP VPN connection never really contact the server?

To be clear, this configuration is not on my own Mac, but on one belonging to someone I serve with technical support.
I am configuring an L2TP over IPSec VPN connection on a MacBook Pro. This connection is to a ZyXEL USG 300 and works successfully from my iPad. (I do not have my own OS X device from which I can test the connection.)
To the best of my knowledge, I have entered all of the information that is needed for the connection. Yet when I try to connect, all I receive is an indication that the server did not respond. In the USG logs, there is no indication at all of there being even a connection attempt. In a Terminal session on the Mac (verbose logging is enabled), I read:
    L2TP connecting to server 'xx.xx.xxx.xx' (xx.xx.xxx.xx)...
    IPSec connection started
    IPSec connection failed
It appears to me as if the connection never leaves the Mac and is prevented or stopped by some fault in the system. The firewall is turned off.
What suggestions do you have for identifying the problem?

That's weird but you should be able to manually install the update like this:
    #Download a fresh copy from [http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ here] - direct link (https://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-28.0-SSL&os=osx&lang=en-US)
#Install the new version. For details, see [[How to download and install Firefox on Mac]]
Usually this fixes this issue with automatic updates. There will be new version available starting next Tuesday. The automatic update will happen sometime over the following week or so.
Let me know how it goes.<br>
    Thanks,<br>

  • Which units support multiple inbound L2TP VPN connections?

Hello. I have a Mac OS X Server that I want to use as a L2TP VPN server for my remote Mac clients. Are there any Linksys routers that support multiple inbound L2TP connections? (The remote clients are 1 person per one location, so there won't be a problem with multiple outbound VPN clients where they are.)
    Thanks

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The WRV200 supports 50 tunnels. The BEFVP41 supports 70 tunnels .Even the RV series is good So you have a lot of choices here.

  • Only my MBP Drops L2TP VPN Connection after 60 Seconds

My Old G4 Laptop and my Dual G5 Tower both connect to my office via L2TP VPN without an issue. with the exact same settings exported over to my mac book pro, the connection drops after exactly 60 seconds. I've tried both wireless and wired connections, and in either case, the VPN drops after 60 seconds of connect time.

I checked with my VPN administrator. He upgraded the XServe to Mac OS 10.4.5, and we tried again, with the same results. He sent me the server log to post:

  • JDeveloper problem setting up a database connection

I am having some problem setting up a connection to my database. Before I say any more let me explain what I need. I need 2 database connections 1 to a 10g R3 database and one to an 8.0.5.
I do realize that JDeveloper will only connect back to 8.1.7 because of the JDBC version that is installed with it.
What I really need to know is "Is it possible to define and use 2 different versions of JDBC" I really don't want to move back to the version that works with both because I am afraid of what performance/benefits I will lose from the latest and greatest.
The latest version that I can determine will work with 8.0.5 is the last version for 9i.
    Any Ideas would be helpful.
The reason for this situation is that I have a production database that I will have to keep up with until the full version of the system is complete so that is why I even care about 8.0.5.
    Thanks alot for your time,
    Thom

I have a similar problem and I would much appreciate any help in this matter.
I have a wireless network set at home with two computers connected to it:
My workstation called Home-ws and my laptop called Acer. I can access the d:\ drive of my workstation from my laptop without any problem.
On my workstation I installed the Oracle 10g product and on my laptop I installed Oracle SQL Developer. On SQL developer I am trying to create a connection to the Oracle server:
    My settings are as below:
    Connection name: orcl_system
    User name: system
    Password: ******
    Host name: Home-ws
    Port: 1521
    SID: orcl
When I push test I am getting the following error message:
Status: Failure –Io exception: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection
Are there any special settings that should be made set up a wireless connection to my database?
Then I did the following things below:
    1. I downloaded from oracle.com the instantclient-basic-win32-10.2.0.2-20060508.zip file and unzipped it in a folder called instantclient_10_2. There were a number of DLL and two jar files plus sqlplus.exe
    2. I started sqlplus from that server
    3. sqlplus failed with a similar error as sql developer.
    4. I checked for tnsping. There is no tnsping such and exe on my laptop. I looks like I have to install the DLLs I downloaded them but there are no instructions about how to install them. Should I just copy them in system32 folder?
    5. I looked for firewalls on my Home-ws workstation (where my oracle server is installed) and on my Acer laptop. The firewalls were activated. I added on exception called oracle for port 1521 on both computers and tried to connect again. I tried with both TCP and UDP options and it did not work in both cases.
I am out of ideas. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help.

  • L2TP VPN connection not working under 10.6.3

    Hi everyone.
I need to connect to a VPN with L2TP/IPSec.
The connection works fine if I boot into Bootcamp (win7).
But if I boot into 10.6.3, it does not work.
any idea what the problem could be.
Settings are triple checked and copy pasted into their proper fields (like in win7). router settings are correct, otherwise it would not work in win7.
So it is a problem with osx.
The following is out of the ppp.log:

  • How do you set up a vpn connection using WVR200

    Hey guys,
I'm new to this forum. I have the WVR200 vpn router at home and I want to be able to vpn to it from work so I can use radmin to remote control my laptop. I have the latest firmware and quickvpn software. I've messed around with it for a couple of days now and I'm surpriesed that it's this difficult to set up. I also havn't found very many documents regarding this router and the vpn setup process. Please help if you can.

Thanks for the reply! I have already read this document but maybe someone can help clear my understanding. I have a dsl wireless router/modem which is connected to my WVR200. The IP of the WVR200 is 192.168.1.1 and the IP of the DSL router/modem is 192.168.2.1. When I enter in the WAN IP(Server IP) into quick VPN I am getting confused as to which IP I should enter. I would think that either would work becasue they are connected to each other.
Also, do you have to set up a tunnel on the wvr200 web interface in order for it to work? In the instructions above it just says to create a vpn account and then click the vpn summary tab and it will show the tunnel information, but how can it, if you never even created one and it doesn't give the insructions too?

  • Having problem with making a VPN connection

have tested the ip address. I just cannot connect with my imac. I have configured both types of VPN
what should I do now to trouble shoot. I have double checked with IT and they told me I am using the correct address.
any thing I need to know doing it from an imac?
    Thanks

I think you should re-post your question over in the OS X Networking forum as there will be much more specialist knowledge there.

  • Problems setting up VPN

I am trying to set up a VPN connection to my workplace network from my home. I have been unsuccessful and I am not sure of the problem but I suspect my ISP's router.
At the workplace I have the following:
Internet connection from ISP through the ISP's Netgear router ( I have no access to modify this) ISP Router is provides a range of IP numbers. Airport Extreme is assigned manually on of the numbers in this range.
Airport Extreme with most recent software. This is assigning static IP numbers to my network based on device MAC addresses. Airport Extreme Internet IP number 192.168.200.53. It is assigning ip numbers from 192.168.91.11-192.168.91.209.
    Mac OS X Server 10.5 - VPN server - 192.168.91.11 VPN IP range 192.168.91.210-192.168.91.212
    DNS provided by ISP xxx.xxx.30.2
From any computer on my network, if I go to www.whatismyip.com, I get the same IP number xxx.xxx.30.90.
On my remote side I have a MacBook Pro, Mac OS X 10.5.4 connecting through a Verizon wireless modem.
Could the Netgear router be preventing the connection? Will this work with the Airport connected to the ISP router?
I have set up my remote connection according to the guides and still do not get a connection.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Could the Netgear router be preventing the connection? Will this work with the Airport connected to the ISP router?
Absolutely. You'd better hope that it is.
If your AirPort has an 'internet' address of 192.168.anything then your NetGear router is performing NAT and managing all your public traffic. By default this SHOULD be set to deny any incoming connections.
If you want to permit any incoming traffic (e.g. a VPN client connection to the server) then you have to configure the router to do so (typically via 'port forwarding' where you tell it specific ports that are accessible, and what to do with the connections).
If you can't modify that router then you're out of luck. You'll need to talk to your ISP.
You may also find that the NetGear can act as a VPN server, meaning your home Mac connects to the router, eliminating the AirPort base station altogether.

  • Check router for VPN Throughput - L2TP VPN

I am working on setting up a VPN for our office.   I have the PPTP version working but am unable to get L2TP to function.  Through various testing methods (setting up our Mac Yosemite server as a VPN and testing it in and out of the office), I am leaning towards an issue with the router not allowing some of the protocols required by an L2TP through.  The reason being I am able to create a L2TP VPN connection with my Mac server when using the internal IP address, but not when using the outside IP address (which to me means the signal is being blocked at the router.)
The server is receiving the SCCRQ from the client and trying to send the SCCRP which the client is not receiving when trying to connect from outside the office.
I have checked all the ports required and they are open (show ip ports), but can not figure out how to check for ESP Protocol 50?  Does anyone know how to check this protocol?  And if this isn't the solution, does any have other methods I can use to find the issue?
    Thank you,
    Chris

I think 2811 can handle this task
2811 supports up to 1500 VPN tunnels with the AIM-EPII-PLUS Module
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5881/index.html
So no problem with 165 VPNs...
If you speaking about huge traffic volume - you should focus on speed of Internet connectivity in head office - If you have 10 Mbit line for head office you get only 60Kbit per tunnel (10Mbit/165)
    M.
Hope that helps rate if it does

  • How exactly do I set up a VPN in Lion?

I'm running OS X Lion w/ Lion Server and cannot figure out for the life of me how to set up a VPN connection so I can connect and retrieve files when away. While I'm familiar with things like router port forwarding, etc., I need somebody to explain and perhaps walk me through setup in Lion. Can I do it right in Lion, or do I need to use Server? Or are there other apps I can use? What port do I forward in the router? Etc. etc.

    Apple>System Preferences>Network
Lower left corner, click the + sign select interface VPN, name it, select VPN type (iPsec, PPTP or L2TP) and follow the prompts.

  • Cisco VPN Connection Problems

    Hello Everyone,
We're having a problem with the Cisco VPN connection capability in Snow Leopard.
The transaction complains that our shared secret is incorrect. What I believe is happening is that certain assumptions are made about the IKE proposals and encryption etc. There doesn't appear to be a place to tailor these in the connection profile. There may be at the system level (which I'm unaware of).
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I believe the same problem applies to the iPhone's Cisco VPN connector.
Furthermore, Cisco is not providing Snow-Leopard IPSec home-to-network clients any longer; they are promoting the AnyConnect SSL VPN instead, for which they have a BETA build available specifically for Snow Leopard.
So this reduces our options (yes, I'm working on VPNTracker).
    Thank you.

It is a known limitation that you are only able to establish a single VPN connection to the same VPN server through a router doing NAT like yours.
What client exactly do you use and what settings did you define there?

  • X-Serve freezes after Windows XP VPN connection

Running OS X Server 10.4.11 and having a problem with a L2TP VPN (Preshared Key) connection from a Windows client. The Windows Client is behind a NAT Router and the XP Registry is patched for NAT Traversal (Informations found in Microsoft KB). This Windows Client can successfully connect to our company OSX Server trough L2TP VPN , Browse the Intranet Webpages, opening Filemaker 6 Databases.
    Our configuration:
Win XP Client --->NAT Router--->---L2TP VPN over ADSL--->Router(pub.IP) --->Sonic Firewall Pro 100 --->OSX Server (VPN Service)
Only browsing the User Directory and others on a Server Volume via SMB causes the server to freeze (become unresponsive). Every AFP Connection disconnects. It forces me to do a hard reboot.
Connecting with a OSX 10.4.11 Client from the same Location is fully functioning and connects without issues on the Server.
Is there something I might be overlooking in the Windows XP client configuration, or something I need to change on the server side? Anyone else having this issue?

Does the OS X Server use a private IP number?
I know you can connect from XP if the OS X server isn't behind NAT without any registry hacks.
Otherwise I seriously doubt it works.

OK, I haven't tried it recently.
