Mac OS X's spell-check self-destruct

Hi,
Can someone, please, verify this behavior? If so, this then is a pretty hillarious bug in Mac OS X's quilt-in spell-checker.
The entry "selfdestruct" is flagged as incorrect, and the spell-checker offers the "self-destruct" option. Immediately, the "destruct" fragment is flagged as incorrect, offering "distract" and "district" as options. How can a spell-checker deem incorrect its own suggestion?!?
Thanks, Tristan
G4 PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

If you open the Dictionary app and enter "destruct" there are 13 entries beginning with "destruct" and ending with "destructs" but very few of them have definitions attached. If you enter "-destruct" as in "self-destruct" you get suggested alternatives of "distracts" and "districts". Entering "selfdestruct" pulls up "self-destruct".
I'm not sure what all that signifies except I'm glad I don't write dictionary applications.

  • Mac computers have no "Spell Check" feature?

Unlike Windows, Mac computers do not have a tool bar with "Spell Check," or at least when I'm on some popular forums I can't find it.  It's very disappointing.  And yes, I see the independent spell check feature on this Best Buy forum, but Mac computers do not have tool bars with the standard, always displayed "Spell Check."  ... or does it?  Maybe I can't find it.
Thanks to all for any assistance.

According to the brief web search I performed, Safari has built in spell checking. Many other programs available for the Mac have built in spell checking as well; just like PC, it's dependant on the application. In this sense, there is no difference between the PC and the Mac.

  • Outlook for Mac does a poor spell check - is there a fix?

is there a way to get Outlook for Mac to do a better job of spell check and grammar check?

Unh - you know, I've been using Outlook for over a year now and never noticed the GRAMMAR checking - maybe I'll have to give it a shot.
Never had the opportunity to check out the capitalized state spelling - I do know that there's a bug (don't know if it was fixed in this weeks update or not) when using contractions in plain text.
I'll have to try out that grammar check sometime. I'm usually so informal in my email messages - like here - that I know that I overuse dashes, ellipses, etc.
Thanks for telling me something I didn't know!

  • Auto correct is making me look like an idiot. I have to go back and psychically spell check my documents now. Is there any way to disable it?

Auto correct on my desktop Mac is making me look like an idiot. After I type it's changing words into other words I never typed and it even pushes words together that I'd typed a space in between in order to create new words that I never typed which make absolutley no sense.
Now after I type a document I have to go back and psychically spell check my entire document the old fashioned way to make sure auto-correct isn't making me look like a clown who can't spell.
Is there any way to disable "auto correct" on the desktop MAC and still keep spell check running?
The amount of messages I've sent out with horribly misspselled words or errrors as a result  is maddening.
    HELP!!!
    Running OSX 10.9.1

I had turned off auto-correct in the keyboard preferences, but in Mail all my spelling and grammer choices were grayed out.  The key for me — as Kingoftypos points out — was "For Mail, open a new message/reply/forward. Then go to the Edit menu and scroll down to the Spelling/Grammar."
It would never have occurred to me to open a new message to be able to change the settings.
    Thanks, King

Everything, Numbers and Pages et al, always default back to US English. To cap it all we sell luminaires (yes this is a word used in our world of lighting design everyday) Mac and Microsoft always default - my docs have more words underlined in red that not. I once found a permanent solution for Microsoft that removed US english - and then the laptop died. Can anyone rid me of this irritation.

    GOT IT FIXED!  WOW!
I did better than filing a bug report.  I went to Apple support, chose chat support.  When it wanted $15 or was it $19 I filed an exemption which was a choice on the page, based on the fact that I recently upgraded to Yosemite.
Got the chat fellow and here we go!!!!  ;-)  First off he sent me this app so he could see my screen.  Then he had me do a few things  like move the system configuration folder to the desktop and repair permissions.  Then he had me reset the SMC and Pram.  Nothing helped, all the ghost computers still showed in the finder.
As a last resort he had me reset my Apple Airport Extreme.  Wala!  Ghost Computers GONE!  He said it was a combination of stuff but mainly it was the airport extreme when I installed Yosemite.  Something to do with my network.  We'll see if it holds or if the problem comes back but as of now there's no more ghost computers in the sharing part of the finder.
Thanks to all who offered suggestions.  I hope maybe this helps someone else.

  • Mac: When I click on a misspelled word in the body of an email the spell checker defaults to first word in the email even if it already spelled correctly

The spell checker identifies incorrect spelled words, however when I right click or control click the word the spell checker only highlights in yellow the first word in the email and gives a dialog with the spelling and definition even though that word already correctly spelled. This is version 33.1 on my mac desktop running 10.10. Spell checking works properly if I use Safari.

  • Pages spell check and Mac dictionary

I find it annoying that Pages' spell-check is not synchronized with Mac Dictionary/Thesaurus. There are words I type that are shown as misspelled, but exist in the Dictionary program. Why not sync the two? It's annoying how many legitimate words Pages thinks are misspelled.

    bk,
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I completely agree. OS X's dictionary and thesaurus are excellent, and it would be nice to have them integrated into Pages spell-check and learned words functions.
Please leave feedback for the Pages team.

  • Mac Mail v. 7.1 (1827) spell checker makes spelling suggestions that are MISSPELLED!

I haven't been able to find this anywhere on the web so far, so thought I would post it here.
I am running Mavericks (v10.9.1) on a Mac Book Pro 17" (Early 2011).
When typing in Mac Mail (or Pages, etc.), my auto-spell check frequently makes suggestions that are misspelled.  For example, I typed "availabillty", and the auto-checker suggested "AVAILABILTY"(!?!).  The correct spelling, of course, being AVAILABILITY.
This has happened several times before, and I just didn't document any of the other misspellings.  I will add others, if that makes a difference.
I've tried to find access to the library to make corrections to the internal misspellings, but cannot seem to find and assuming not accessible??
Please help!  This is an incredibly annoying problem, making the spell-checking functionality essentially worthless having to stop and "spell-check the spell-checker" everytime.

    Pedro,
Thanks, I apprecaite the info, but you did not address my question.  The links you provided just explained the basics of spell-checking and how to do things like "learn new words".  The do not provide any "information regarding what I'm trying to accomplish".
Perhaps I didn't explain my problem clearly enough:  My problem is there are INCORRECT suggestions being made by the Apple spell-checker (or whatever library it's using).  In other words, I'm spelling a word correctly, and the auto-spell-checker is suggesting incorrect spellings to my correctly spelled word.
What I'm trying to accomplish is getting misspelled words out of the auto-correction library (and also figure out how they got in there in the first place).  Is there a way to edit the existing words in the spell-checking library (not just adding new ones, as the link you provided pointed out).
    Thanks,
    Dan

  • Mac Word Crashing when saving or spell check

I just got my macbook in January. I have been having this problem since then.
Occasionally when I press command+s or optioncommnandl while in Mac Word the program shuts down entirely.
This happens EVERY time I do spell check while typing a document when the langauge has been changed to Spanish. This also occurs when the language is in English.
Can anyone help me? It is so frustrating!

  • Spell Check in Mac doesn't know the simplest words

I came into Mac 5 years ago still waiting for a decent 'Spell Ck'.
For example, 'unexceptable', and spell check didn't have a clue if spelled wrong or right.
I've been hitting 'learn' for years. Or forced to Google.
    I don't get it.
What the heck is out there that outdoes the PC version I had years ago?
Careless writing it wrong is no excuse anywhere.
    Thanks

Oh My, I opened that link and cracked up in .03 seconds.
I'll admit though, in here we are pretty lucky.
Out there, OOOooooo it's scary. Look at any YouTube page.
Something is in the water used for cool-aid.
I travel quite often to Europe.
From Germany to Sweden, I'm so impressed by the kids that not only learn the
disambiguation of our language, but speak clearly.
I feel bad, and a little embarrassed that at my age, it's tough to dedicate the time to learn a foreign language.
The poor gal in Germany in small village general store tried so hard to understand me.
I tried to explain I wanted hamburger for camping. Who knows how that came across.
I could not read one package on the shelfs. Even melk comes in grades I never saw before.
She came back with liter of motor oil.
Maybe she knew the Beamer out front is what I needed vs what I wanted.
I politely said thanks, and continued on tour with the oil.
    Cheers

  • Downloaded multilingual spell checks on Mac PowerPC G5

I have a Mac PowerPC G5 connected to the internet, and a separate PowerPC G4 that I use separate from the internet, connecting to the first PC only through diskettes, DVDs, or flash data storage.
I use the latter PC to write my preliminary work before transferring it to a PC that (despite the firewall) can be hacked. (I have reason to believe that it has been hacked.)
I downloaded the spell check software for Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, and Latin. I have found the files for the spell check software in the Downloads folder, but do not know where to transfer them so that I can use them in my Office (Word, etc.) and Nisus files.
Also, I would like to transfer them to my disconnected PC. Can that be done.
    Please help.

Here is the bit confusion, modem is connected on which slot of the Router? Here is the connectivity first of all connect the Comcast modem to the Router on the Internet port and then connect the computer with any one of the Ethernet port of the Router [Numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4] then the light status on the Router as well as check the IP address…
You can find your IP address from the Mac System Preferences:
From the Apple menu pull down “System Preferences”
Click on the “Network” preference pane
Your IP address will be visible to the right
Let me know what information that you get in that window….

I don't know if I'm in the correct area?  I have the basic iMac Desktop.  If I'm the wrong
area maybe you could show me where I'm supposed to be?
My q is re: Mail/Spell Check?  I feel I'm not doing it correctly bec the corrections(if any?)
are not very good.  I recently switched from Microsoft to Mac.  The Microsoft was very
good but I can't believe Microsoft is better?

  • Messages unintentionally being sent in mac mail when I press return or close spell check.

Since upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.2, I have an issue where my messages in Mac Mail would be sent prematurely. I wasn't sure what was going on and it was getting quite frustrating. I soon realized it was when I hit the return key and/or finish spell check. I never experienced this before and its annoying as all heck. Is this a bug or a new function in Mac Mail? If so, is there a fix?

Try going to the Mail/Preferences/Accounts and deselect 'Enable this account' for 1 account. Re-launch Mail and see if you get the same behavior. Trying to see if this can be isolated to a particular account. Repeat as necessary until you have checked all accounts. If you can find out what account it is, delete the account and set it up again.
