Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 binding to a new search domain.

We are running 3 Mac OS X Servers that are 10.6.8. One is an OD Master, and the other 2 are replicas. We manage our computer preferences through Workgroup Manager/Open Directory. Our users are in Active Directory. We recently set up a unified domain in which all of our computers and users now are.  Our OD servers were bound to the old domain. Our admin account on the server is a local user called macadmin. In Workgroup Manager I had multiple lists set up and preferences put into place. On Friday, our server admin unbound the servers from our old domain and bound them to the new domain. From the outside, everything looked fine after logging in. However, this morning I launched WorkGroup Manager to add some computers I had bound to a group. When I looked for the groups and the computers, they were all gone! I am not sure what happened. Any suggestions would be appreciated, as I have a large number of buildings with different settings I manage.
I am hoping this makes a little bit of sense to someone... Thanks!

Paul,
This is a long-standing problem with no resolution that I am aware of except to not save iWork documents directly to a server.

  • IP Forwarding on a Mac OS X Server

    Hi!
    I'm really a newbie with Mac OS X Server...
    I got this new X Server with the Mac OS X server O.S.
    I have the DNS, NAT and firewall running.
    My LAN have a private IP like the 192.168.1.x
    Now, i'd like to setup a web server in my LAN, but i want it accessible from outside.
    I tried NATural, but it's seems nothing happens...
    Please, can you tell me (in detail) what I've to do for having it working?
    Thanks to u all!
    Marco

    well... i did some tests...
    Now, from outside is possible to reach my internal webserver.
    If i put my public ip in my browser (inside the LAN) i cannot reach the webserver...
    Do you think it's something to set in my firewall or is it okay?
    Also... for doing that, i used the unique public ip on my xserve.
    There's a way to assign a secondary public IP to redirect to my local webserver?
    I cannot do this on my router, so i hope it could be possible with the xserve.
    Thanks again!

  • DNS: Import Bind zones in Mac OS X Server

    Hi all,
    currently I'm about to setup a new Mac OS X 10.5 based web server. Everything seems to work better than expected. Only importing bind zones does not work at all. After reading the documentation and some threads here, I figured out Apple changed the zone files format. It always possible to import "old" zone files coming from any other DNS, but if you do, they will not be displayed in the new Server Admin and you are not able to edit your zones there. Furthermore it is not clear whether a Bind zone file imported earlier can get in conflict with an identical zone defined later by mistake.
    So I searched for the new zone files, created by the Server Admin app and found them in "/var/named/zones/". They are more user-readable than standard Bind zones and include a GUID. Additonaly the naming conventions changed to "db.<stld>.<tld>.zone.apple" and a dummy bind zone file in "/var/named/" is created too, pointing to the corresponding new zone file.
    Now my question (Yes, I know, long and boring intro) ...
    *Is there a way or a hidden app to convert standard bind zones to the new Apple format? I read something about an auto migrate function when upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5 Server. So it seems to be possible.*
    Any tipps?
    Thanks a lot,
    Wolfgang Neikes
    btw.: *Hey, Apple, please add a simple import button to the DNS Admin GUI! You know how.*

    Well, I'm being hit by something very similar, so I'll follow up to your post.
    But I think you have two completely separate issues involved here, so I'm going to make two comment areas
    Comment 1 : The change from files to GUI for Server-Admin-Managed-Zones
    The content of /var/named/zones is variable, generated by the Server Admin program. Don't touch any of the files in there! They appear to be standard BIND files, but they're in a different location because that's how the GUI communicates with BIND.
    You can track back back exactly what happens following the named.conf file: it's actually working exactly as BIND does on other OS's, it just uses some include file redirection to make things manageable by the GUI.
    /etc/named.conf contains :
    include "/etc/dns/publicView.conf.apple";
    This file contains a list of all the zones you have configured in the gui. For example (if I were apple.com) :
    zone "apple.com." {
    type master;
    file "db.apple.com.";
    allow-transfer {any;};
    allow-update {none;};
    The default directory is /var/named, so if you look at /var/named/db.apple.com., you can see another include line:
    $INCLUDE /var/named/zones/db.apple.com.zone.apple
    and that file, finally, contains the BIND SOA file you're used to (I couldn't see anything in it that's unusual)
    Meaning, there's no "apple" format, and anything you put in /var/named/zones would just get overwritten by the GUI anyways, so don't do that
    Comment 2:
    So, according to page 63 of the Networking Services Admin manual for 10.5, you can do everything you used to do by adding your own entries into /etc/named.conf.
    OK, I add the following:
    (Note that everything has to be in a view because that's how BIND works
    view "everyone" {
    allow-recursion {any;};
    zone "not-apple.com" {
    type master;
    file "not-apple.com.";
    allow-update { none; };
    allow-transfer { any; };
    OK, fine, when I turn the logging on to "Debug" mode I can see it loading my domain like all the others. Yay!
    But, back to something you said: it doesn't work!
    Sure, it SAYS it loaded the file, but when I test it with dig:
    # dig soa not-apple.com @localhost +norecurse
    ; <<>> DiG 9.4.1-P1 <<>> soa not-apple.com @localhost +norecurse
    ; (3 servers found)
    ;; global options: printcmd
    ;; Got answer:

    (etc.)
    Basically, it denies knowing anything about not-apple.com, despite it having "successfully" loaded it in the log contents.
    THIS *****: I would desperately like to close down an old server of mine (without having to manually add every domain and just re-use the existing files) but I'm finding that I'm unable to do so because Leopard doesn't work according to the documentation

  • Implementing Google ForceSafeSearch on Mac OS X Server

    I'm trying to implement Google Safe Search — per Option 3 at this article: https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/186669 — on our Mac OS X Server.
    In other words, I'm trying to force Safe Search via DNS by creating a CNAME alias to "forcesafesearch.google.com" for www.google.com and the www.google.x country domains (I've also tried an A record instead).
    I ran into problems when attempting to enable this for www.google.com in particular. I cannot find any Google documentation on how to properly implement this CNAME alias (or A/"Machine" record) for Mac servers.
    What do I need to put in for "Nameservers" as seen in the attached screenshot? I cannot leave it blank. I've tried ns1.google.com through ns4, but obviously that doesn't do any good for google.com itself. In the attached screenshot you can see that my latest attempt was to try the IPs of ns1.google.com through ns4 (for now just testing with a Google country domain, google.ad, so it won't mess anything up with the main Google site). However, when I tried these settings briefly for www.google.com it blocked accounts.google.com — and obviously we need that to work for logging into Google services! Google.com has a lot of subdomains so it's not feasible to try to implement this for all of them (not to mention that I'm not sure that would work, anyway). Again, I cannot leave out Nameserver Hostnames because the configuration cannot be saved if one attempts to do so.
    What's the proper way to configure Nameservers as seen in the attached screenshot to enable Safe Search via DNS while still enabling other subdomains of Google.com to work properly, e.g. images.google.com and accounts.google.com? I've read that this can also be done for YouTube.com: http://www.solidborder.com/2014/12/google-dns-safe-search-enforcement/ (alas, instructions are for a Windows server).

    OS X Server uses BIND (Mavericks Server Admin: Overview of DNS setup) . So you should be able to edit the BIND configuration file.
    I have the following set in named.conf:
    include "/etc/named.conf.local";
    In named.conf.local:
    zone "rpz.zone" {
            type master;
            file "/etc/bind/rpz.zone";
            allow-query {any;};
            allow-update {none;};
    In rpz.zone:
    www.google.com  CNAME   forcesafesearch.google.com.
    When I do an nslookup from workstations through the DNS server, I get the proper response:
    nslookup www.google.com
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: forcesafesearch.google.com
    Address: 216.239.38.120
    Aliases: www.google.com
    This article should help:

  • After 10 years of Mac OS X server DNS GUI wrapper still breaking configs

    WHY?
    Against my better judgment I used the Server Admin's DNS tool to add a zone. Next thing I know it's going and added random data from the new zone to most if not all my zone records. It's changed the SOA for all my zones to some random concatenation of the new zone's data, it's concatenated A records to NS records. I had to go in and manually repair ALL of my records.
    What's so hard about creating a functional BIND wrapper?
    Lesson Learned - SAVE YOURSELF HOURS OF UNNECESSARY FRUSTRATION, NEVER USE SERVER ADMIN'S DNS TOOL, NOT EVEN TO DO SOMETHING SIMPLE LIKE ADD A NEW ZONE RECORD.
    **** I wouldn't use it at all if Apple hadn't removed the means to turn the **** server on and off from the command line.

    Sure there are a world full of solutions out there but I've already invested time, money, and a knowledge of how things work on OS X. Seems kind of silly for you to say that I should throw the baby out with the bath water and just find the "solution that works". I have no problems with any other service I'm running, with Apache and Postfix running smoothly, since they have the first time they were configured back in 2002.
    BIND on Mac OS X server works just fine when the Apple specific components and changes aren't thrown into the mix. I've been running it this way since OS X Server was released (**** I even ran BIND on "Client" for a while without any issues back before server was available) and I've mostly enjoyed 100% uptime despite those times when I was naive to think "Apple must have fixed ServerAdmin DNS. Let me just make one minor change using the GUI tool."
    Is it too much for me to ask that if they can't make the tool work right then, for the love of the great and holy Admin, don't mess with it at all? Seriously if it isn't broken don't fix it. I'll happily manually config from the command line, lovingly reseting my serial numbers for each edit, the one time every couple of year that I might need to do so. Instead of releasing a tool thats only going to break your configs, don't continue to tease us with ease of use GUI apps.

  • Joining Win2K3 Server/AD to a Mac OS X Server OD Master

    Has anyone tried this setup?
    Basically, we'd like to set up Mac OS X Server 10.5 Leopard to be an Open Directory Master, iCal Server, and LDAP server to some services such as subversion authentication.
    We also have a need to have a Windows 2003 Server running Active Directory for Sharepoint Server. I'm having problems trying to bind a Windows Server to an Open Directory Master (My DNS is set up along with the appropriate SRV records as documented by:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/interopmigration/linux/mvc/cfgbind.mspx ?mfr=true
    I configured BIND manually because the OS X DNS Admin app doesn't seem to be able to set up SRV records properly nor have a way to enable secure dynamic updates".
    Whenever I try to bind the Win2K3 Server to the Open Directory, it always fails. Does anyone know if it's possible to join a Win2K3 server to the Open Directory Master in a way that fools the Windows server into thinking the Mac is an AD server? One important note: I have NOT enabled Windows PDC on the Mac. which is based on NT and not AD.

    Hello,
    I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your post, but I just wanted to say I am trying to setup exactly the same thing.
    If I manage to get it working, I'll post and let you know.
    The one thing I can add is that when I was setting up a W2K3 server to use a linux based DNS server, I had to add "check-names warn;" to the Bind config file.
    The problem is that the DNS names Microsoft try to register break certain naming standards, and I set it to give a warning instead of a fatal error.
    I have no idea if that is relevant to your setup, but I know I needed to do it to get my Bind working with W2K3.

  • Mac OS X Server 4.0: User & Group Accounts

    I've bind Mac OS X server to AD, and I can see AD Users and Group accounts.  It seems that all other services such as Profile Manager requires Open Directory to run.  With Open Directory running, could I continue to use AD accounts instead -without having to recreate the wheel of a whole new set user accounts and  groups?  -So really assign AD accounts or groups to Server services.
    Thanks in advance!

    You should not have to do anything the user/group import should be automatic and you should not have to manually create any accounts and it does onging syncs automatically but I do not know how often.
    Once you are install and connect to profile manager all the accounts should show up just by clinking on users or the groups icons and they will work with that. You should not need to mess with them in the actual server application Although I would assume the other services all ink into the OD directory I don't know exactly how services like email, file sharing or VPN work as we have other more full featured better scaling services for that like MS Exchange for email/calendar and Cisco VPN.
    We are only using OD, Profile Manager and Software Update.
    Just a note I am using Server 3.2 on OS 10.9.5 if you are using Server 4.X your mileage will probably vary slightly as I am not sure what the areas of major change are.

  • Mac O X Server v10.39 troubleshooting start up.  'console mode' screen

    I have recently made use of my old *G4 400 mhz* desktop mac, by installing an old version *Mac O X Server v10.39*, to use as home server. The installation has gone well and the server has been working well for over a week, the users and shared points have all been set and there hasn't been any problems. It is now running headless and I am controlling it via Apple Remote Desktop, I have also set the energy setting preferences to put the server to sleep at 10 pm each night. I also have three other family macs which are connected and configured to use the server.
    But today I have tried to wake the server via ARD, but it wouldn't wake up and also when I have tried to getting it to manually awake up it doesn't work either, even though the front light is on.
    I then have then pressed the small reset button on the front of the G4 and now when it boots up, after seeing it go through the start up screens and once the progress bar has reached the end, the screen then goes to a black screen with the words:
    Darwin/BSD (Server name) (console)
    login:
    This is were I'm stuck, I have no knowledge of the Terminal scripts etc.
    But I have tried the put in the servers name, then pressed return, at this point the next line came up as
    password:
    After entering the administrators password, the screen then goes to a plain blue screen.
    Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get passed this stage in booting up, or what I am doing wrong and how I can correct this situation.
    Many Thanks

    Hello !
    Remade an new install with a FQDN* (yourhost.yourdomain.com) hosted by your provider with a A and MX (if you plan to use mail setvices) records pointing on your host
    Too : it's imperative to enter a valid ip on your eth. link (no public adresse : like as 10.x.x. or 192.168.X.X on your en0
    Even it's possible to setup like this, you must configure your router or firewall ... but much complex ! (Port mapping ... virtual server ... etc.. DMZ if you have ... ???)
    Install a second eth card is good think :
    1 for the wan link on the EN0
    the other for the lan EN1
    with a "real" domain name and the ip supplied by your provider : you can setup your server with this public ip on your wan and a 10-net on your lan.
    (Your dns request will be forwarding to the DNS IP servers of your ISP : one line in option of the named.conf file)
    Before you can install the software with your ISP setup (DNS and domain name) : But don't launch any services !!! nothing ! all off !
    upgrade your os x software before setup via pref panel ..
    at tis time, you got an local acces who is accessible via yourhostname.local and once you have the necessary described (domainname.xx hosted and public ip adress you can setup the services by runnig "Gateway Tool" to start DNS, NAT, DHCP and VPN services.
    The Firts step is OK !
    After you can finish the setup with in first : The DNS forwarding
    Once you hosname and reverse resolving : you will be able to jump to the next !
    But before you must get a perfectly lookup of your hostame and ip addr
    (You can setup your DNS as a primary server ! Bind 9.2.2 run well ! but ... not really easy without a goot practice of bind and a good overview of Domain Name basics ... and insecure for your data ; DNS crashed = O.D. dead and access data under LDAP denied and lost !)
    good luck !

  • Using my home Mac as a server

    I would like to put my pictures on the web so that certain clients can view their photos with password. I photograph weddings and would prefer to make html slide shows of their wedding pictures so that they can view them anywhere with any computer. I would like the setup to be as simple and reliable as possible. I have an additional 250GB drive in the Mac that I wish to use as the storage of individual folders that contain the slide shows. If it would help I can get a dedicated 2nd Mac as the server if necessary. I was told that I would need a static IP address and some kind of software. I thought I could use file sharing on my computer but after reading numerous articles over the net, I am quite confused as to what I need. All I want to post is photo galleries that have about 600 to 700 pictures each that a client can view and that I can delete some or all of them after 30 days to be replaced by new ones. What software, hardware, etc. would be necessary to do this. Any suggestions welcome.

    OSX server or client are both capable of handling this, as long as you have enough disk space. A site like this would probably only require a simple script on the server, server side includes (.shtml) and some javascript in the page itself. Frequently changing directories with basic authentication would probably best be done with .htaccess files. It isn't brain surgery, but there are reasons that people can make a living doing this kind of work.
    A static IP would be needed so that when the users aim their browser at your site, they're not aiming at a moving target. Be aware that many/most/all ISPs that have home broadband networks block web servers.
    Try turning on the web sharing, and try making one of these sites and see what comes of it. One cavaet that I see coming, is that the names of the images will probably vary from one shoot to the next, so that's why I was thinking that a server script to list the the image names and put them into a javascript array for the page to use to call for the different images.

  • 2 internal hard drives Mac Pro Tiger Server

    I have a mac pro 10.4.11 server that has 2 internal hard drives. 1 is 232.89 GB which is the main startup drive and the second is 465.76 Gb which I had pre installed for extra storage. My question is when I look in Server Admin under sharing and I click the "all" tab. It displays 2 hard drive icons and when you select either one, they consist of the exact same things. Do I need to format the second drive in a way so it will be recognized in the Server Admin Sharing?? I can install applications to the drive as it is recognized in the normal finder but I can't seem to get Server Admin to know it is there. I was going to use the second drive for mostly applications and storage. The other hard drive I was going to try and keep just for home directories.

  • Old Web Server Software on Mac OS X Server 10.4.6?

    I am wondering why my apache that is running is only 1.3.33 accordign to my webmin tool that my friend installed, the php and sql are old too.
    I'm not a unix guru by any means and I want to upgrade these and enable GD etc, but I'm running 4 or more virtual servers by using the server tools and I don't want to break the builtin functionality of the server tools. Is apple going to upgrade this stuff on os x server?

    Mac OS X Server ships with both Apache 1.3.33 and Apache 2.2 (in /opt/apache2).
    You're more than welcome to disable Apache 1.3.x and use 2.2 if you prefer.
    However, the Server Admin GUI will only currently work with Apache 1.3.x, so if you do you'll need to manage your configurations manually.

  • Mac OS X Server 10.0.4 Update

    Hello,
    I've been going through my software and downloading all the updates I can find. I was wondering if any of you might have this in your archives, Apple seems to have "lost" it and my usual haunts have come up empty.
    I've recently bought Mac OS X Server 10.0, and I have some of the other OS X Servers (for the Xserve), it seems finding (just the) updates you need before OS X Server 10.3 is hit or miss.
    In one example I'm trying to find:
    Mac OS X Server 10.0.4 Update: Document and Software
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120035
    ( http://download.info.apple.com/MacOSX/062-8318.20010702/0z/10.0.4ServerUpdate.dmg.bin )
    Dumps you at:
    " This URL is no longer used. If you get to this page, please go to:"
    http://www.info.apple.com/export/
    ... do strange loop.
    (My cookies are enabled)
    I know this is old, thats not the point, why is this and for that fact most of the other updates missing?
    I'm not real clear if 10.0 Server is update-able to 10.1 Server with the OS X 10.0-10.1 update CD for the regular OS X to which you may then UD to MacOSXUpdateCombo10.1.5, they mixed it up so you can't tell - or I can't tell.
    Mac OS X Server 10.1: Chart of Available Software Updates:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42741
    See what I mean?
    Even OS X Server 10.0.3 Update would suffice. I'd appreciate you all poking around - I got nothing.
    Mac OS X Server 10.3.x on, stuff is easy to find, Server 10.2.x and earlier is a pain and this is the last time (hopefully) I'll need to do this.
    If anyone with these updates could contact me that would be great or just reply to this post, this server will not be online - just to be clear.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Not able to install mac os x server 10.5.4

    Hello,
    I've inherited a MAC g5 from a previous sys admin.
    it had a number of issues so i decided to do a clean install.
    i've set in my os x 10.5.4 server and rebooted that didn't work. when i chose the dvd it just hanged there.
    so i installed a mac pro (came with the g5 ) as i've read in an online how to that described my exact problem. once done i tried installing the server again and same issue happened.
    now i have mac pro on my g5.
    after research it seems that my mac os x server 10.5.4 has another version which is older than the G5. so it cannot be installed.
    i tried using a targeted mode though came into another set of trouble:
    1. tried booting from the dvd using a macbook pro with a fire wire plugged into it.
    result: macbook kept restarting when i chose the mac os x server
    2. tried booting from dvd using an imac.
    result: after choosing the dvd it hangs a bit and then boots normally from hardidisk.
    3. picked an old IMAC and booted from it
    result: it worked, and i installed the mac os x server on one of the HDD in my g5
    once done, i've shut down both, unplugged firewire and then booted the G5
    a grey screen appeared with another hdd in the middle of the screen and it just stayed there.
    Can someone please advise how can i proceed?
    PS: i've contacted the apple reseller, though as our support contract ended they couldn't help.

    The retail disks I've seen in that era were usually black in color. The non-retail disks tended to be gray in color. IIRC, the part number for the 10.5.4 Mac OS X Server Leopard Server retail disk is MB605Z/A.
    If it's not a retail disk, then the contents are usually tailored for a specific Mac box.
    The MacBook Pro would have to be a fairly old model to boot 10.5.4; [here are the Mac Intel minimum OS version requirements (HT1159)|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159], and (though there were no MBP PPC boxes AFAIK) [here are the PPC version requirements (HT2191)|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2191].
    The "issues" that precipitated this reinstallation sequence could well be a disk or processor or memory or other hardware problem with the server, too.
