Mac OS X Server and Solid Works

I have a Xserve and Xserve Raid running AFP and Windows File Services. The problem is when opening Solid Works files on a PC. Some files open fine but others come up with the message "Access to unnamed file is denied".
If you copy the file off the server on to the desktop then it opens fine.
The problem only seems to occur with files that were originally stored on a Snap Appliance 4100.
The Server is running 10.4.6 and has all updates applied. The PCs are running XP Pro.
Any help would be appreciated.
  Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Ok, turns out Solid Works is not compatible with Mac OS X Server. When a Solid Works file is in use a temporary hidden file is created for file locking. When the file is closed down this temporary file should remove itself. Unfortunately on Mac OS X it doesn't resulting in the error message.

  • Mac OS X Server and Pure-FTP: error in OS X Server Sdmin

    Hi all.
Recently I installed an XServe to serve different needs:
It's a File service, Web service, Windows Service, Print Service AND, I supposed, a nice FTP service.
Simply I had to allow few people that don't belong to the company, to "ftp's" document from outside.
The FTP module with the OSXServer core is really UGLY and absolutely not flexible so I preferred to move to an OpenSource program to substitute it.
    I choosed Pure-FTP.
It works very fine BUT I saw something wrong in the ADMIN app of Mac OS X Server: the service FTP "looks like" running!
Also the button at the top of the window shows the service running; if I stop it, the PURE-FTP application stops to work!
Anyone has found this situation or anyone is using this app program on an XServe?

If you are using PureFTP, then use it.
Server Admin is NOT designed to work in conjunction with non-Apple, 3rd-party products, or non-Apple configs of 3rd-party items such as Postfix or Amavisd, and certainly not for non-Apple-provided ftp services. Ignore Server Admin completely for FTP if you are using PureFTP.
    End of story

  • Problems with Mac OS X Server and webperfcache...

I'm running Mac OS X server 10.4.11 and I'm trying to get mod_rewrite to work (thus far unsuccessfully). As part of my debugging strategy I want to turn everything around apache off and start pulling things apart to see if I can get them to make sense. When I turn the web performance cache off on all my sites using the site administration utility, apache gets a bus error when it attempts to restart. When I turn web performance caching back on, apache continues to get a bus error. Reboots, et al. don't clear up the problem and all I can do is go back to my system backup and bring up the previous day's version, which I can currently live with.
Has anybody seen this before? Alternatively, has anybody had problems getting mod_rewrite to work and can give some advice. I'm doing pretty much everything that works on other U*x based systems and has worked before, but the lack of control over the ports used by the web sites on my system is problematic and I would, at the very least, like to be able to turn off webperfcache.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dick Munroe

I am actually going to be doing almost exactly the same thing in the next 1-2 weeks. My plan is to make the OS X server a BDC on the domain, then promote it to PDC and retire the Windows Server 2k3 PDC.
I have 1 Win2k3 PDC and 1 Win2k3 (64-bit) Terminal Server. My main worry is whether the PDC is handling the licence CALs for the TS.... if it is, that will interfere with the plan.
Email me and let's discuss this off-line.
    Thanks,

  • Home Mac Mini Yosemite Server and Time Capsule

    Hello again,
I''m looking to have a Mac Mini Yosemite home server with my dot com pointed to my fixed IP.
I have a laptop, an iPad 2 and an iPhone 6 to manage in the beginning.
It's mostly to practice skills for employment purposes.
If I get the latest october 2014 Mac Mini with Server 4 and I want to back up the server on a Time Capsule 3 TB:
    Will it create big backups:
Some macs will be backed up to Mac Mini Yosemite Server Time Machine Services.
iPad and iPhone backed up in iTunes, on the server or the laptop?
What else can be a problem?
    François

    Hello DC,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
For the problem I try to anticipate, it was like those mac with Bootcamp, where Windows is one big file and a simple log on-log out on Boot Camped  Windows would change the big piece of bread and another complete multi GB would be backed up. the runaround was not to time-machine the Windows file and use a PC backup for the Windows stuff.
In the same vein, if users back up to the Mac-Mini server in a sparse image, does'nt that fill the backups of the server which is also a sparse image?
I agree with you that an external Time Machine HDD is more flexible as more than 3 TB can be needed down the road.
As for open ended question, effectively, you read it right, I am looking for problems I did not anticipate from user who bumped into them.
    Thanks

  • Mac os x server and dhcp

    Hi all,
Just a quick question. Does the DHCP service in Mac OS X Server override the DHCP in a Time Capsule?
    Thanks,
    Andy

Certainly try dedicating a DHCP pool of one IP address to a MAC address, as was described in that video.  I might go as far as dedicating that IP address to a MAC address that doesn't exist on the network, as the local servers and static-addressed devices are intentionally not dependent on any DHCP requests; they're entirely static-addressed.   I haven't tried this, as I don't use the particular configuration described in the video, as I prefer to avoid using the Airport or a Time Capsule as a firewall gateway router; I have and use and recommend a dedicated gateway firewall router.  I also prefer to configure the Apple wireless devices as access points (what Apple refers to as bridge mode), and not as WiFi routers.
It is possible to run multiple DHCP servers for some cases — for reasons not germane to this discussion, I have three DHCP servers running on one network I deal with — so long as the DHCP server address pools don't overlap with each other or with the static addresses.  Ugly, but possible.
If you can't run as an access point (bridged), then having DHCP relay in the device would be preferable.  But AFAIK Apple's wireless devices don't support that operation.
My preference is a gateway-firewall device and preferably with VPN server capabilities, running Airport or Time Capsule devices as access points, and having the server or some other device running DHCP.
FWIW, that video somewhat conflates port forwarding and NAT.   NAT is the address translation.  Port forwarding is how you configure remote requests through that address translation.  Also adding the IP address of the DNS server into the box itself as is offered in that video will likely also trigger DNS timeouts when the non-local address is selected.   It did, last time I tested that.  His description of setting up multiple local and remote DNS servers in the same list is also something I wouldn't recommend, as you don't want your DNS queries potentially going to the remote DNS servers as you won't get the local translations.
pfSense and various other open-source gateway-router software packages are available if you have some spare ARM or x86-class hardware with two network interface controllers, and there are also a number of commercial gateway-firewall product offerings with various features.   Since I'm potentially running remote access, having the VPN server in the gateway avoids most of the various "fun" that arises with NAT traversal in a VPN; VPNs and NAT run at cross-purposes.

  • Can I use Mac Mini Lion server and Time Machine 2Tb together?

I have TM already and am looking to add a Mac Mini running O XS server soon. I use TM to back up my iMac and MacBook Pro laptop at present. My existing setup also includes a PC running windows which is backed up by an HP media smart server. I want to replace the PC with a Macmini running parallels and windows 7 to run my windows program's and want the TM to back this up also.  I would like the MM server to run my iTunes library to all Apple devices and need to access the files stored on the MM server from my iPad. Is this solution workable?

The only differences between the current Mac Mini Server
and the other Mini versions is that it has the quad core i7,
comes with dual drives, and has the "Server app" installed.
So, you could install Lion by itself as the server software
is now a seperate "app" in Lion as opposed to being an
    integral part of the OS.
BTW, what is the problem you are having?
I am running a 2011 Mini Server as a desktop and simply
just did not enable any of the server features when I first
set up and have not had any issues using it as a desktop.

  • Mac OS X Server and Active Directory Replica

    Hello,
Has anyone ever encountered any problems when making a Mac OS X Leopard server an Active Directory Replica? We're working on this project and we want to make sure that we don't mess up our primary AD server when we configure this.
    Thanks so much,
    Mac man of the Bay

    Hi
Not sure what you mean by Active Directory Replica? If you mean you want your Mac Server to be the BDC to a Windows-based PDC then no it won't happen. OSX Server can only perform as a Domain Member when a Windows Server is the PDC. Neither can you have a Windows Server as the BDC when the PDC is an OD Master - as far as I know.
Have you downloaded and read the manual?
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/OpenDirectory_Admin_v10.5_2ndEd.pdf
Briefly: OD Master/Replica relationship can also be PDC/BDC only if both boxes are OSX.

  • Questions on Cad Integration- Solid Edge and Solid Works

    Hello All,
I had the following questions related to CAD Integration:
    1. I have my CAD files saved in working directory. I create DIR for them from CDESK (Cad View - Create Document) and want to rename the files as Document Number_Document Description. How can I achieve the same. Again, I want to do the same from CDESK (CAD VIEW)
    2. On Solid Edge CAD integration, I have noticed sometimes when I register the DLL's the 'User/System Preferences from SAP-PLM' on Solid Edge side does not pop up. Can someone tell me what might be the reason and how to fix it. Also if I already registered the DLL's and want to clean them (remove them), so that to try to register DLL's again, where can I go to remove them from Windows registery file
    3. In Solis Edge is it necessary to check in and check out the SEC application (representing .cfg ) in SEA document type. I have noticed if I have the .cfg in my working directory and I check in SEA without .cfg and if  some other person checks out the SEA, the .cfg gets created for him on the fly in his working directory.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sachin

    Hello Sachin,
    1. please have a look at and implement note 645365 - "CDESK: Attaching Solid Edge .cfg file when creating doc.".
    2. If you registered the DLL's once and you want to update them, you only have to copy and replace the old ones with the new ones. You do not have to un-register the old ones.
The problem with the disappearing Menu-Items or symbols can only be solved by restoring the SolidEdge-Registry-Path...
    3. You can only checkout the CFG-Files if you use the CAD-Desktop.
You have to add the WSAPPL SEC (*.cfg) to the applications in the CDESK_CUS.
    (CHECKIN, CHECKOUT and COPY)
    Stefan.

  • Mini Mac Snow leopard Server and Timecapsule .....

    Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a Mini Mac server for hosting several websites and was wondering if anyone can help me with the following:
    1. How easy is it to host several website?
    2. Can the Mac Mini Server be connected to a timecapsule for automated backups
    3. (not really Mac related but you may be able to help!) My ISP upload speed is only .5 Mb, how does this affect download speeds from the sites I host?
    4. Will it run joomla, and is php/mysql already installed?
Many thanks for your help in advance.
    Regards
    Andy

    1. How easy is it to host several website?
    Trivial.
    2. Can the Mac Mini Server be connected to a timecapsule for automated backups
Time Machine is generally not recommended for servers, though you can use it as a target for your own backups. TM isn't good at making copies of active files, and servers are replete with active files.
    3. (not really Mac related but you may be able to help!) My ISP upload speed is only .5 Mb, how does this affect download speeds from the sites I host?
You get 50 gigabytes of upload speed through sheer force of, um, whoops, sorry, clients receiving pages from or pulling files from your server get that 0.5 speed. Enabling compression can help. Some.
    4. Will it run joomla, and is php/mysql already installed?
    Yes, and yes.
Many thanks for your help in advance.

  • Mail, iCal Server and iChat server will not work over VPN

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station at the office running the network. Behind it sits a Mac Mini Snow Leopard server running 10.6.3. The ports necessary for Mail, iCal Server and iChat work fine through that external connection. I can also connect with VPN from my 10.6.3 clients.
HOWEVER, when I connect with the VPN clients, I am suddenly unable to access the Mail, iCal Server, Wiki server and iChat server. All connections time out. I can ping the server and I can do other things that do NOT work on the public Airport like ssh or VNC. ssh and VNC are closed at the airport extreme.
So it's pretty odd. When I'm connected via the VPN, all ports that are forwarded to the Snow Leopard server time out over the VPN.
I've tried various and sundry configurations with the VPN client. This includes trying to send all traffic over the VPN, moving it up in the service order, etc. etc. Nothing fixes it. DNS resolution is working fine, however when I do a wireshark capture of ppp0 traffic, I notice that SSL and TLSv1 handshakes appear to occur on the public IP address instead of the private network IP address... and they're all resets.
Has anyone gotten this to work successfully? Like I said, all ports that are NOT forwarded through the Airport work fine over the VPN, but will not work when connected to the VPN. It's really bizarre.

New data: any ports that are normally forwarded on the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini server will not work when connected to the VPN.
For instance, if I have imaps/993 forwarded from the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini, it works fine over the Internet. If I connect to the VPN, I can connect to all OTHER services on the Mac Mini, but Mail, for instance, will not work.

  • The server at Mac OS X Server Web Services requires a username and password

I am running SL Server 10.6.2, wiki works but when a person clicks an attached file in a wiki and then selects "open" they get a login popup with the notification The server at Mac OS X Server Web Services requires a username and password. It doesn't matter what they put into the login/pass it comes back. If they hit cancel then the document opens. If they click save then it saves with no issue. I can type in the admin login/pass of the server and it works. Does this mean the security settings to the location of the files is wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated!

By the way they are using Internet Explorer 7 when opening these documents.

  • Mac Mini Server and Adobe Creative Suite

I am looking for buying a new server and wonder if the Mac Mini with OSX Server is powerful enough.
4 Intel based macs in the office, all working with the Adobe CS4 package creating a weekly newspaper.
The client macs are mainly working with InDesign and Photoshop files. There is a heavy use of Bridge for seachings and Smart Folders. From InDesign we create PDFs based on InDesign Book (recompiling info from various InDesign docs into one PDF).
Will the Mac Mini with OSX Server be powerful enough?
We are currently working with a QNAP NAS Server with 2 500 gb discs mirroring, which aparently doesnt fulfill the needs.
Anyone can recommend the Mac Mini OSX Server?

    Which QNAP are u using?
Should be able to support 10 mac in an office like yours!
A minimum TS 239 pro surely does the job.
Why use mirroring in a QNAP NAS!? IT got great backup feature
put the 2 drive in raid 0
If not available onsite - Buy an external 2 TB used to backup the qnap daily or at least 3 times a week.
In my office we work directly with the indesign files on the nas without any issue.
If you will NOT be using all the features of mac os x server, its NOT worth the investment.
When you say powerful enough what do you mean?:
    - Holding your files? any storage will do.
    - Functions and services like ICHAT, ICAL, ACL, WEB for a mac office, YES OS X Server is the thing you need.
Also consider that as of now QNAP NAS does not offer any mean of being bind to LDAP. Even AD binding seems to be an issue, have a look on their discussion forum.
Setting MAC OS X SERVER as PDC and trying to bind the QNAP to it is a kind of an issue requiring adequate human resource for config.
Investing in the os x server now you will leave the QNAP on its own for file sharing, unless going through Global SAN, which, combine with Mac OS X server and QNAP/iscsi is a wonderful solution.
Wonderful solution only if you Mac OS X Server machine have TWO Gigabit NIC and you switch support VLANS. So here surely not the mini, though still depend on the size of the files you work with.
Then again you will need to rethink your Backup solution, may be going with combination of : CarbonCopyClonner, Automator and Ical.
The Mini Server with a DAS will suit your need. Already in possession of a QNAP NAS I dont see a Mini Server and external FIREWIRE RAID box be a good investment unless you are of those kind of rich business who dont know that in madagascar woman are giving birth in the streets without any doctor, in jakarta children below 5 yr old are being left on their own to survive the streets…

  • LDAP and NFS mounts/setup OSX Lion iMac with Mac Mini Lion Server

    Hello all,
I have a local account on my iMac (Lion), and I also have a Mac Mini (Lion Server) and I want to use LDAP and NFS to mount the /Users directory, but am having trouble.
We have a comination of Linux (Ubuntu), Windows 7 and Macs on this network using LDAP and NFS, except the windows computers.
We have created users in workgroup management on the server, and we have it working on a few Macs already, but I wasnt there to see that process.
Is there a way to keep my local account separate, and still have NFS access to /Users on the server and LDAP for authentification?
    Thanks,
    -Matt

It would make a great server. Bonus over Apple TV for example is that you have access via both wired ethernet and wireless. Plus if you load tools from XBMC, Firecore and others you have a significant media server. Cost is right too.
Many people are doing this - google mac mini media server or other for more info.
Total downside to any windows based system - dealing with constant anti-virus, major security hassels, lack of true media integration and PITA to update, etc.
You should be aware that Lion Server is not ready for prime time - it stil has significant issues if you are migrating from SNL 10.6.8. If you buy an apple fresh Lion Server mac mini you should have no problems.
    You'll probably be pleased.
