Mac OS X Server on Windows Domain with Server 2003 DC
Hello,
I work for a school based in Leicester and we have a full windows environment (server 2003) running about 300 XP machines and 22 macs connected to Active directory using a piece od software called Admit Mac.
Recently I went over to another school and to see there mac setup and how easy it is to image machines, subsequently we purchased a mac mini and installed MAC OS X Server on it. I want to be about to use this sever with Apple remote for the 20 macs we have by joining it to are domain and pulling the machines through using AD for Imaging etc.
Can this be done easily and what's your experience on the best way to go about doing it?
Any help would be fantastic partially if someone out there has done it!!
Hi
+. . . pulling the machines through using AD for Imaging etc.+
Not sure what you mean by this? Creating images similar to RIS files (on the mac platform they're called nbis) can only be done using the System Image Utility. You can use the application itself if you want or an admin mac with the Server Admin Tools installed. AFAIK the application can only be run on the mac platform.
I doubt if nbis can be 'served' by your DC either if this is what you meant?
You might get a clearer idea if you read the documentation:

Is it possible to run a Windows domain with a Mac Server?
Looking for some advice on getting rid of our Windows domain controller (DHCP server, AD, etc.) in favour of a Mac Server (which we own). Is it possible to run a Windows domain with a Mac Server?
Snow Leopard Server (10.6) and earlier included Samba which supported acting as an NT Domain Controller (this pre-dates Active Directory). Lion (10.7) and later as standard can no longer act as an NT Domain Controller nor can they act as an Active Directory server.
So the short answer is no.
Theoretically you could port Samba4 to a Mac and Samba4 can act as an Active Directory server. In reality this is not going to be easy but is theoretically possible.
An easier option might be to run a copy of Linux (e.g. Ubuntu) in a virtual machine e.g. using VirtualBox and then run Samba4 in that and configure it to act as and Active Directory server. Then you could connect the Mac side to the Samba4 Active Directory server. This approach would use all Mac hardware, and not have any extra costs of licenses to buy and as far as all the rest of the network is concerned would be a standard Active Directory server environment. -
How to add a Mac Mini device to the windows domain
Hi,
I want to add my Mac Mini machine to a windows domain. Is it possible to add it? I have tried but it is not working. It asks for Client ID While joining to a windows domain. I have given MAC address, IP address and hostname of Windows server but it is not working. Please do help me out to sort out the issue.
Regards,
Ram_LiviaHi BDAqua,
Why should we create a user again? The point is I am going to join this Mac Mini to a windows domain controller. Windows domain controller means a centralized database of an organization. It is communicating with my Domain controller. But the issue is it is not founding my domain node while joining to a domain. Please find the attached screen shots for your reference. If you have worked on this please send me step by step configuration. -
Last Contact with Server - Client Quit Communicating with Server
Hi,
Is there anyone with the same problem we're experiencing below?
6 Windows 7 clients and 1 Windows XP client (10.2.2)
All 6 Windows 7 clients quit communicating with the server after a while.
Last contact with server time stamp doesn't change on both the client and
server. Next contact with server does, but the client doesn't refresh. If I
try to remote control, I can't. If I assign a new bundle, it doesn't work.
However, I can login to the Zen agent.
I can unregister the client locally and reregister and the client will
communicate with the server for a while and it will then stop communicating
again after several hours or couple days.
All but the sole Windows XP client are having this issue. Windows XP client
is also the first client registered in the server.
thanksJS,

Installing a Windows 2012 Domain Controller into a 2000/2003 domain with Exchange 2003
Hello,
I have a client that we are planning to migrate to 2012 over time. They currently have a Windows 200 DC and 2 member servers running Windows 2003, one of which is running Exchange 2003.
We first are going to introduce a 2012 server into the domain and my plan was to DCPromo the 2003 server that isn't running Exchange and raise domain level to 2003 and then demote the 2000 server. I was then going to install the
2012 server into the domain and make it a backup Domain Controller for the time being and leave the newly promoted Windows 2003 server as the primary Domain Controller with all the roles and global catalog. My question is will Exchange 2003 still function
normally in this scenario?
I've been doing research and read some things about Exchange 2003 not working with 2012 Domain Controllers, but I was thinking if the 2003 is still the primary, it might work. We will eventually migrate to 2003, they just don't want to
do it all at once, due to costs and other issues.
Thanks.I didn't ask if it was supported, I just wanted to know if Exchange 2003 would continue
to function if the Windows 2003 DC still held all the FSMO roles and Global Catalog.
A not supported situation means that it is a situation where Microsoft made no testing or do not guarantee that you can operate with no problems. Following a not supported scenario could be done but is on your own risk.
If it won't, can the 2012 server be a member server in the 2003 AD? The 2000
DC it is replacing, just shares files on the network in addition to being the lone AD server
Yes, it can be a member server.

Can I connect a Mac running Snow Leopard to Windows Small Business Server
I'm running the OSX 10.6.8 and want to connect to applications running on Windows Small Business Server 2008. Is this easy or difficult or impossible?
Most Applications intended to run in that fashion would provide a Mac client, a Windows client and a Server component, designed to interact and keep a Master database on the Server up-to-date. Custom database software could also be written for that environment. Perehaps there are options for your package to be used in that fashion, but it would have to be designed-in from the beginning.
A web Application could also run in that fashion, with only a Web Browser on each computer interfacing to the Server software, which would keep the Master database and allow multiple access over your local Network. -
Mac OS X 10.5.7 as VNC server and Windows as VNC server
Hi,
I try to enable screen sharing from Mac OS X as VNC server and we would like to use a Windows client as VNC client.
I try to anable it from system pref., set the password, ecc.
When I insert VNC password from Windows, VNC send me this message.
read: Connection aborted (10053)
Have you got any advice?
If I use Windows as VNC server and Mac 10.5.7 as client all works fine.
Windows Vista SP1, RealVNC VNCviewer 4.1.3 free edition.
Thank you
Regards.

Re: justinvallon
I have found that if a 3rd party client is not happy with the Mac OS X VNC server, then switching to the Vine Server (aka OSXvnc) often times does the job. Vine Server is a free download:

Installing Ciscoworks LMS 4.0 on Windows domain member server.
Hello.
I'm looking for some suggestions about installing CiscoWorks LMS 4.0, and upgrade, on a domain member server running Windows 2008 R2 SE 64 bit.
Thanks.
AndreaHere are the basic install best practices:
1) Install as a local administrator (this means create a local account and add it
the "Administrators" group).
2) My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Environment Variables
Set the USER TMP and TEMP to a shorten path like
C:\Windows\temp
3) Make sure you have FIXED pagefile size like 8182
My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Performance Options -> Advanced
4) May need to reboot, certainly log out an back in to make sure step 2 applies.
5) Stop all anti-virus and firewall during the installation. Disable them in services and reboot if necessary.
* NOTES: Anti-virus can be re-enabled after installation, but you should EXCLUDE
the NMSROOT directory as long as LMS is installed on the server. DEP should
remain off (that is, set to only protect critical Windows system files) as long as LMS
is installed on the server.
* If Internet Information Services (IIS) is detected on your system and if you have
continued the installation with IIS services, you cannot use the port number 443 for
HTTPS. Instead, you must use the port numbers ranging from 1026 to 65535 for
HTTPS to avoid this conflict.
When performing the installation, make sure these two steps are followed:
* Install from original, locally attached media
* NEVER abort the installation after the installer says not to
It may not always be possible to install from original, locally attached media
(especially on VMs). But you should avoid from installing over the network as hiccups
can cause bad installations. If you are installing on a virtual machine, convert the DVD
to an ISO image, then mount that within the VM.
Here is the document detailing all ports needed to be allowed (excluded from policy)
for LMS 4.0
LMS 4.0 Port Usage
General Notes:
If you want to upgrade the operating system from Windows 2003 or Windows
2008 to Windows 2008 R2, you must first complete upgrading the operating
system, and then install the LMS 4.0.x Windows 2008 R2 patch.
* You can install the LMS 4.0.x Windows 2008 R2 patch only on LMS 4.0.x
and not on the lower version of LMS.
* You cannot install Integration Utility and HP Open View 7.x or 8.x on
Windows 2008 or Windows 2008 R2 servers.

Upgrade to Server 2012 R2 domain controllers from 2003
I am at a loss as to what I did wrong here. Everything seems to be working fine except for one subnet (which is behind a hardware firewall).
We had two Server 2003 domain controllers and one of them was failing. I raised the forest functional level of our old primary domain controllers to 2003. I built the first replacement Server 2012 R2 domain controller. Added the AD DS roles
and promoted it as a domain controller. I let it sit for a couple days. The FSMO roles were currently being handled by our other 2003 domain controller. Once this had been sitting for a while (don't recall how long) I ran dcpromo on the failing
server and demoted it. Once demoted I shut it down and pulled it out of the rack. I then built our second 2012 R2 server and gave it the same IP as the failing one. Installed the AD DS roles and integrated DNS as prompted by the wizard.
I then made it the operations master for Schema master, Domain naming master, PDC, RID pool manager, and Infrastructure master. Then I ran dcpromo on the second 2003 domain controller to demote it and removed it from the network. I then demoted
the first new controller (DC03) changed the hostname and IP to the name and IP of the second 2003 controller and promoted it again. I'm not sure at what point things broke, but everything works from the same subnet that the domain controllers are in,
just not a second subnet that is through a hardware firewall. I don't see anything getting blocked while watching firewall logs so I don't think the firewall is the issue.
Here is the dcdiag and ipconfig from the first controller (which has all 5 FSMO roles).

I forgot to mention that after the 2003 domain controllers were out of the environment, I raised the domain and forest functional level to 2012 R2. All clients in the environment are Windows XP Pro or above. The XP Pro boxes will be going away as
soon as our vendor supports their software to run on Windows 7.We now have 2 2012 R2 DCs. The 2003 DCs are gone. Metadata from the old DCs is all cleaned up. DNS seems to be working fine in 3 out of 4 subnets. The 4th is behind a hardware firewall and I can see the IP address of the machine I am trying to bind to the
domain connecting to the two new domain controllers but the client machine that is trying to bind gives an error. An Active Directory Domain Controller for the domain wgd.inet could not be contacted. It seems that this is just a DNS issue for one
particular subnet (10.240.2.0/24). This subnet is setup in AD Sites and Services\Sites\Subnets\10.240.2.0/24 (Site: Default-First-Site-Name).
When trying to do anything with nslookup from the 10.240.2.0/24 subnet it times out. The route is there and I can watch it connect through our hardware firewall over port 53.

Migrate SQL 2005 from windows 2005 server to Windows 2008 R2 server
Hi all,
I need to move our SQL 2005 on a windows 2003 server to a new server with Windows 2008 R2 installed. Could someone show me what are the necessary steps I need to do?
Thank you.Hey TR,
As per Microsoft recommendation, Before Installing new server try to run Upgrade Advisor and follow these steps
1. Take Full backups of all System and Application databases on your 2005 machine.
2. Script all logins --
3. Script all jobs
4. List out all Maintenance plans and their schedules -- You cant migrate so you have to create them manually
5. List out all Linked server(s) currently being used.
6. Check the service pack
7. Check the Edition
8. document the existing server settings so that it should match the same (collation,version,...)
Migration process
1. Migrate logins
2. Restore all App databases
3. Fix the orphan users
4. create the jobs
5. create maintenance plans
6. create Linked Servers
7. perform checkdb on all databases
8. rebuild indexes
9. update the statistics
10.move all the DTS / SSIS packages

Add the Hosting Server IP in Domain Name Server of Microsoft
Hi,
I have purchased a domain (techwhiz.info) and web hosting from
www.net4.in but the email is taken from Microsoft exchange for the same domain so the Domain Name Server is with Microsoft. Now I want to host the site for the same domain and as
www.net4.in hosting provider told to do a entry of Hosting Server IP in DNS then only the website will show the contents. As I don't know how to do this entry so please tell me the steps to do that.
If required anything more please let me know.
Thanks in Advance.
Pratik PurohitI'm having a little trouble with your english, but I think you're trying to do 3 things:
Host email on an Exchange server
host a website with net4.in
setup DNS so that these things work together
It also sounds like Microsoft is hosting your DNS? If so, you'd simply create an MX DNS record to point to your Exchange 2010 server, and another DNS record for www.techwiz.info.
You may wish to call the hosting provider(s) of these services for more specific guidance. Your question is pretty broad.

Migrating 10grel2 Application server from windows to linux server
Hi Friends,
Can you please share your experience or steps need to perform for migration o oracle 10grel2 Application server which runs on windows to linux server.
Best regards,
Rafi.Hi Rafi,
There is no direct way to migrate. You need to install the fresh instance on Linux, and migrate the data across e.g. OID, SSO, Portal, Config etc.
Thanks,

Mac OS X Server Print Sharing Issues With Server Admin
Hello,
I have a fresh install of Mac OS X 10.6.5, with just PaperCut and network printers added. When I open Server Admin (on the server itself) and select the Print service I can see 'servermgrd' and 'cups' using 60%+ CPU each for about 3 minutes. Then when I click 'Queues' tab the 'servermgrd' and 'cups' using go back up to using 60%+ CPU each and even if I leave it running for 12 hours it continues to stay like this, until I quit Server Admin.
I currently have 45 shared printer queues.
It sounds like the same issue discussed here:

Any help would be great! Thank you.

How can I connect 10.4 Mac to Windows Small Business Server 2003?
I have seen some other discussions touching on this topic and have tried the various solutions but am getting nowhere. I can't connect my iBook, which is running Tiger, to our office's server, a Windows Small Business Server 2003. I am the only Mac user and as a Mac devotee actually spent my own hard cash for the iBook. (I work for a non-profit with low funds.) Previously, when our office had a different server and I had Panther, I could access the server. Then it was purely an academic exercise, since I had no need to access the shared files. Now I have a project that requires this, and I am stumped. Our part-time IT consultant is also stumped. We have tried a lot of the suggestions from other posts, to no avail. I suggested to the IT guy that there could be a problem regarding the encryption of my password, and I think he tried that. We have tried various versions of the domain name. The server comes up in the list when I follow the "go--connect to server--browse" path, but we come up empty. We've gotten error message -36, a message that we are trying to connect an alias to something that can't be found, and a message that we don't have enough information to go any further (something like that). I am writing from my eMac at home, so I can't reconstruct the situation right now. I have found in my extensive internet search that Thursby has something called ADmitMac that is pretty expensive software ($119 for one person) that I could install on the iBook and could help me access the Windows Small Business Server 2003 without doing anything else to the server. Does anyone know if that would that work? Any suggestions would be so appreciated!
eMac and iBook Mac OS X (10.4.4)I have specific errors listed below:
Actually, I have been encountering similar problems. I have an end user who wants to connect to an SBS 2003 server, and can not connect/use RWW because the Active X will not work, cannot use the VPN in PPTP mode because Windows 8 disallows the connection
("Error 942: The connection could not be established because the authentication method used by your connection profile is not permitted for use by an access policy configured on the RAS/VPN server."), and cannot use an L2TP VPN connection because it requires
a certificate "Error 766: A certificate could not be found. Connections that use the L2TP protocol over IPSEC require the installation of a machine certificate, also known as a computer certificate.". I attempted to utilize the SBS Connection Tool downloaded
from RWW, but it fails with a proxy error ("Unable to execute custom script (Configure proxy settings for IE). Required file could be missing." - likely due to the PPTP tunnel it tries to use). I went so far as to install the Enterprise CA on the server, installed
the Hotfix
(KB922706) so that the website could be accessed from Vista and above, and installed the requested certificate. The VPN fails to connect after
it times out and fails to negotiate a connection. This last one is "Error 789: L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer
encountered a processing error during the initial negotiations with the remote computer."
I have screenshots to share if anyone cares to see. I really just get the feeling that Microsoft is trying to kill SBS 2003 by ingoring it into oblivion.
The VPN works fine with Windows 7 clients by the way.
