Mac Os X server questions

i am thinking of getting mac os x server, i have a few questions before purchasing.
1, using this am i able to make a folder accessable anywhere outside my house (mac still at home running)
2, will it mess with my airport doing anything with it?
3, is it worth it for a small private cloud service that can be used anywhere?

I'd suggest you look at how to setup a VPN with OS X server.
You speak of port forwarding like you can just open the internet up to port 548 (Apple File Sharing) or whatever port the service requires. This can be a security risk, some services are vulnerable to simple attacks or worse (use plain text to send passwords) - revealing them on the public internet is a bad idea.
Instead you need to connect into a VPN (or a SSH tunnel) which encrypts the traffic & helps to hide the services.
You don't need OS X server to do it, but it makes life a lot easier. In effect the device is then attached to that network. So you can see all the services the server is running with fewer exposed external ports.
This may be to much info but have a read there are probably simpler guides out there, but krypted.com covers things well IMO.

NOTE: Some thought is required to ensure that your inside VPN IP range does not conflict with the range used on many public wifi access points, it starts getting complex to explain, reading is the answer

  • Mac OS X Server Questions from a Newbie?

After a lengthy discussion with an Apple Genius, I'm considering setting up my office Mac Pro 3,1 8-core tower with Mac OS X Server. From what I understand, this will enable users logging in with lower powered equipment to take advantage of the processing power of the Mac Pro. Plus, I'll be able to login via Ethernet when traveling and use applications that exists on the Mac pro as well as share files.
Does that mean that any Mac or PC logging into my Mac Pro as a client will effectively be a dumb terminal? Will PC/Windows users see the Mac OS X operating system on their laptops when they do this? I'm just trying to get a better understanding of how all of this works before I implement it.
    Thanks!

From what I understand, this will enable users logging in with lower powered equipment to take advantage of the processing power of the Mac Pro.
I'm not really sure what that means, but it's true only if they log in remotely via Screen Sharing, and you don't need OS X Server for that.
I'll be able to login via Ethernet when traveling and use applications that exists on the Mac pro as well as share files.
That's true, but again, you don't need Server for it.

In a sense, if you're thinking of Screen Sharing.
Will PC/Windows users see the Mac OS X operating system on their laptops when they do this?
    Yes.

  • Mac mini file server question...

I would like to configure my mac mini G4 as a file server using the current OS X Tiger operation system. Basically I will use another computer as the web server and have the mac mini host the files for it.
Any recommendations or restraints for doing this? Do I have to worry about the Mac Mini going to sleep mode? Can OS X handle this kind of operation?
    Thank you for your help

Yes my Mini is running the latest version of OSX. I also run Windows XP, Vista beta, Linux: PCLinux & Ubuntu on it through Parallels. I have zero problems between Mac & Linux. The only thing I'd recommend is depending what OSes you're working with you might want to partition and set-up a common FAT32 area. I know Linux can't write to NTFS (tho Xandros 4 can) and Windows doesn't like the Mac drive system much. So FAT32 is the common file system all operating systems can read/write to fine. Overall I don't foresee you having any real problems.

  • Question about mac mini with Mac OS X Server

    Hello forum,
first I want to say hello to each, because this is my first post in this forum.
I want to buy a mac mini, but I have further questions before i buy.
My Situation is, that currently I have a windows and a linux server (Windows => Exchange and Linux as a build server). Now i want to remove such servers and replace it with one mac mini server.
1.) Currently I have an exchange server...Is it possible to use Mac OS X Server to work like an Exchange server?
2.) I plan to use it as a build server which generates bundled software for Mac OS, Windows and Linux (Windows and Linux where running in VMWare Sphere)
    Is this possible with it?
    Thanks in advance
    Best Regards
    Roman80

1.) Currently I have an exchange server...Is it possible to use Mac OS X Server to work like an Exchange server?
That depends on how deeply-embedded you are into Exchange.
If by 'Exchange' you mean the basic email/messaging tools then yes, but if you mean the full MAPI client/SharePoint/messaging/sync/compliance tools then no.
2.) I plan to use it as a build server which generates bundled software for Mac OS, Windows and Linux (Windows and Linux where running in VMWare Sphere)
This isn't an option. vSphere will not install on a Mac Mini. The only VMWare option for the Mac Mini is VMWare Fusion, which does allow running client OS systems in a virtual machine, but does not support the full suite of VMWare functionality. Whether it has enough for your needs cannot be determined without more details of how you expect this to work - if it's just a matter of having a Visual Studio running in a Windows VM, and some other compiler running in a Linux VM then it may be possible, it just depends how deep you need to go.

  • Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 firewall question

    Hello,
I'm a network administrator in a company, and we use Mac OS X server 10.5.8, with Mac clients.
I have a problem with the adaptative firewall : when someone wants to connect to the server (by using the finder, and "connect as"), if the password is not correct, the adaptative firewall just cut the access of the client for all (It's a DHCP and DNS server, so there is no access anymore to the LAN and the web).
I would like to know if there is a way to make the client blacklisted after 3 bad login attempts, not just only one. I used the afctl command, but it's apparently not possible to manage this problem with that (just the time of blacklisting).
    Thanks a lot in advance.

I don't have a solution for you. But I do remember reading about this one. Apparently what happens is that beneath the surface, the connection attempt is repeated on failure, using differnet authentication protocols. And so one user login attempt with a bad password, leads to three attempts beneath the surface, and "the boot". But unfortunately I don't remember what the solution is, as I was researching for a completely different issue when I read this.

  • 2 internal hard drives Mac Pro Tiger Server

I have a mac pro 10.4.11 server that has 2 internal hard drives. 1 is 232.89 GB which is the main startup drive and the second is 465.76 Gb which I had pre installed for extra storage. My question is when I look in Server Admin under sharing and I click the "all" tab. It displays 2 hard drive icons and when you select either one, they consist of the exact same things. Do I need to format the second drive in a way so it will be recognized in the Server Admin Sharing?? I can install applications to the drive as it is recognized in the normal finder but I can't seem to get Server Admin to know it is there. I was going to use the second drive for mostly applications and storage. The other hard drive I was going to try and keep just for home directories.

This is the wrong forum for your topic. You should post it in the Mac OS X Server forum.

  • Cloning a Mac OS X Server to a remote location

Scenario: A Mac Mini running Mac OS X Server is in location A and a second Mac Mini running Mac OS X Server is to be acquired and setup at a remote location.
Desire: Do a nightly backup of Server A to the second Mac Mini so that Server B is a bootable clone of the primary server.
Question: What is the best software/approach to do this?
Discussion: I'm familiar with and use SuperDuper, Synchronize Pro and Carbon Copy Cloner for performing file by file backups and synchronization where the hard drives are on the same server ... but I'm not sure if any of these are the best alternative to backup a MAMP Pro installation on the Server (along with other applications and data) to a remote server box.
I realize that particularly within the Moodle VLE (that will be running on the servers) that absolute links will still point to the primary server but that is not an issue for me. In the event of a catastrophic failure of Server A at least there would be an offsite clone that could be accessed if a few settings were changed.
BTW: Server A is hosted by a commercial hosting service and no backup drive is available on-site for a file x file backup/synchronization. We do have full access to the server via ARD, Timbuktu Pro, AFP, etc.

Can you expand your info on the use of these two approaches, particularly the mysql replication
Well, my approach requires that there's some kind of connectivity between the two machines - preferably a VPN network to secure the traffic, but it doesn't have to be done that way.
rsync essentially takes two directories - one local and one remote - and compares the differences. Depending on the switches you use it will copy the changes from one system to the other (or both if that's what you prefer). In this case I'd set it to copy the local web directory to the remote machine, so the remote machine has a copy of all the files.
rsync works best for static files (e.g. .html, .php, etc. in the case of a web application), but shouldn't be used for dynamic files such as your database files.
As for the data, MySQL has substantial built-in replication routines that are designed to keep multiple database servers in sync. There's far more to it than I can go into here, suffice to say it can maintain a real-time copy of your data on a second, remote machine, and you should read the documentation for the specifics.

  • Mini Web Server Question

I'm guessing there might be a person or two who can help me with a solution for a new mini that I'm using as a web server. Everything is set up and working perfectly. Apache is running well, and I've established my Virtual Hosts and enabled PHP and MySQL. What I haven't been able to figure out, however, is how to go about limiting access to particular directories on my server.
Here is what I would like to accomplish.
I've got a couple of sights that have the root directory of /www/sitename/publichtml/.
In those public_html directories are resource directories with names like "images" "downloads" etc.
From my websites, I pull resources from those directories in order to serve images, resources, etc.
What I would LIKE to do is still allow those directories to serve the resources to the sites, but prohibit direct access to those directories from direct web access. In other words, I want my images to pull from those directories, but I don't want someone to be able to directly navigate to the directory www.sitename/images/imagename.jpg.
I would like some message to show up along the lines of "You do not have permission to access this directory".
I attempted to do this with file permissions, but it either allows total access to the directory or won't allow the web pages to pull the resources.
Does anyone know of any other solution that will help me accomplish my goal?
    Thanks!
    Chris

You are going to be more likely to get a good answer to this question in the Mac OS X Server forums. If you are using Leopard Server, go [here|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1237].
If you are using Mac OS X Web Sharing you should post [here|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1225].

  • Home Mac Mini Yosemite Server and Time Capsule

    Hello again,
I''m looking to have a Mac Mini Yosemite home server with my dot com pointed to my fixed IP.
I have a laptop, an iPad 2 and an iPhone 6 to manage in the beginning.
It's mostly to practice skills for employment purposes.
If I get the latest october 2014 Mac Mini with Server 4 and I want to back up the server on a Time Capsule 3 TB:
    Will it create big backups:
Some macs will be backed up to Mac Mini Yosemite Server Time Machine Services.
iPad and iPhone backed up in iTunes, on the server or the laptop?
What else can be a problem?
    François

    Hello DC,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
For the problem I try to anticipate, it was like those mac with Bootcamp, where Windows is one big file and a simple log on-log out on Boot Camped  Windows would change the big piece of bread and another complete multi GB would be backed up. the runaround was not to time-machine the Windows file and use a PC backup for the Windows stuff.
In the same vein, if users back up to the Mac-Mini server in a sparse image, does'nt that fill the backups of the server which is also a sparse image?
I agree with you that an external Time Machine HDD is more flexible as more than 3 TB can be needed down the road.
As for open ended question, effectively, you read it right, I am looking for problems I did not anticipate from user who bumped into them.
    Thanks

  • Hosting a Domain Name on Mac OS X Server 10.1

Hello. I have a server running Mac OS X Server 10.1, and I
want to use it as a webserver. I already have a domain.
My questionis, how do i host the domain on the server?

The big difference between Mac OS X Server and client is that Server comes with a series of GUI tools for managing the server - configuring, stopping and starting the various server components including the web server, but also directory server, file servers and network services such as DNS, NAT, DHCP, etc.
There's no advantage to Mac OS X Server as far as PHP or MySQL is concerned - none of the GUI tools will drive those apps, so you'll need regular PHP and MySQL skills whichever way you go. If that's all you're using then Client should be sufficient.

  • Install Tiger on Mac OS X Server

    Actually there are two questions:
    1) Is it possible to install X11 on Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 running on Dual 1.8GHz PPC G5?
    2) If not, is it possible to install Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.5) using the install disk I got along with my MacBook Pro on the above machine?
I tried, but got a kernel panic. I desperately need to install X11 on the G5. Someone please help.

I don't know what I was doing earlier, but I could install X11 on the PPC G5 using the install disks that came along with the Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro using the optional installs mpkg.

  • RADIUS Server on Mac OS X Server 10.5 Leopard

I must set up a Radius Server on my LAN and WLAN, I will do this with Mac OS X Server v.10.5 Leopard but I don't know if it's compatible with any routers(for LAN and WLAN Access) and with Windows XP Pro SP3 computers.
    Can anyone help me????

I know this question is fairly old but I can now state that as of last night I am using a Netgear WN802T - 200 access point paired with the RADIUS service on a Leopard Server.
Leave the "type" of station either blank or other for Netgear.
Accounting does not seem to work and throws errors in the radiusd log, but other than that the Mac clients and iPhones show a WPA2 Enterprise connection.
    Your mileage may vary.

  • Mac OS X Server - Web Hosting & Media Server

Hi All - Need advice. I have MacPro and have purchased MacPro Server.
Here is what I plan to do with MacPro Server:
    1. Host couple of my personal websites, blogs etc.
    2. Use it as a iTunes Media Server so that I can access my iTunes content through VPN / Internet remotely.
I want to use my MacPro largely for Web development work (basically as a DEV environment) whereas MacPro Server will be my Production environment. I have a couple of questions and will be grateful for your advice:
    1. Is it a good practice to have iTunes Media Server on Mac OS X Server?
    2. Presently, I have all my iTunes library stored on 2 x 2TB hard drives within MacPro. I would really like to move these hard drives to my MacPro Server and import the content to iTunes there. Can I do it? Will I lose the ratings and other details?
    3. Will I be able to access iTunes on Mac OS X Server via Internet / VPN remotely?
    Thanks in advance!!

By the way they are using Internet Explorer 7 when opening these documents.

  • Mac OS X Server 1-to-1 Routing: Multiple DSL Static IPs

    Hi all -
Question here regarding Mac OS X Server 10.4's ability to handle multiple static IP's coming from my DSL ISP. Can this be handled through the Server Admin GUI or does it need to be done in Terminal with iptables or something similar?
My ultimate goal is to send 1 of the static IPs to a Mac Pro, another to a Mini, another to a DVR, etc.
As a piggyback question - what is the general consensus here on using a Mac Pro or Xserve with Gateway Setup Assistant as a VPN router in place of a traditional SonicWALL / Linksys / Netgear, etc?
    Thanks in advance.
    Eric

    >As a piggyback question - what is the general consensus here on using a Mac Pro or Xserve with Gateway Setup Assistant as a VPN router in place of a traditional SonicWALL / Linksys / Netgear, etc?
    Go with the traditional box.
For a few bucks you get a box that's designed for that kind of thing, has a far better interface for managing it, and far more fine-grained control over what traffic can come through.
In addition to that, by having a dedicated hardware router/firewall/NAT device you avoid the chance to leak any services to the public - if you're like most people, your gateway machine isn't just running as a gateway - it's also got sshd running, maybe a web server, file server, DNS server, possible even running as a directory server.
Since this gateway machine, by definition, has its proverbial *** hanging out in the wind there's a possibility that these services could be compromised by remote hackers.
By using a dedicated hardware box you can be very specific about what incoming traffic you want to allow, completely insulating your server from the outside world except for the services you know you really want to be public.
