Mac os x server software update data location

Does anyone know how to change the data location of Mac OS X Server (v3) Software Update?
I'd like to move it to a large RAID permanently connected to the server but I can't find the command in serveradmin.
Cheers,
Kirk

Why not move the whole boot disk and Serve.app and the rest out to the RAID array?  It's not like OS X is that big a hunk lately in comparison with the size of various RAID arrays, and relocating the whole configuration means you won't have to deal with a piecemeal relocation, nor any future upgrade weirdnesses that might arise from the relocation.
That approach aside, Mavericks Server storage is mostly under the /Library/Server path.  I haven't tried relocating indidual hunks yet, either.
Ah, slightly misread...  You could shut off Software Update entirely, and use Reposado.  That'll let you do what you want.
The other hunk you'd probably want to move is the Caching Server.

  • /library/server/software update - can data be deleted?

I run OS X Server 2.2.2 on my Mac mini. I discovered that i have turned on the option software update. As i don't use my Mac mini Server for Software Update distribution i disabled this service.
Now i discovered that in folder
         /library/server/software update
a lot of data is still stored. I tried also to delete the software updates available still in the disabled Software Update section within server admin.
Can i delete manuall all these software update .pkg files?

If you are not planning to offer this Service, Once you have turned off Software Update Service, you CAN delete these items.

  • 10.9.x Server software update for 10.10 clients

Hi - We have a 10.9.x Server running Software updates. Simple question...will 10.9.x server download updates for 10.10 clients? I can look at the logs but I am lazy. Thought I would post a question here. Thank you

    Hi chwhite97,
If you are running Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) Server for your software update service, it can only provide updates for Mac clients running 10.6 through 10.9. See this article for reference -
OS X Server: Software Update Service compatibility - Apple Support
If you wish to update your server so that it will support Yosemite clients, it would need to first be updated to Yosemite itself, available here -
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-yosemite/id915041082?mt=12
Once this is done you would need to update the server's software, available here -

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Mountain Lion Software Update date remains the same?

The Software Update date (last check) always remains the same, is this a temporary fault? Anyone else having this problem?

    Hello,
I'm sorry I don't have really any more ideas, I agree I really couldn't be bothered to re-install Mountain Lion for this, if I were you I'd wait and see if 10.8.1 sorts it or make a Genius Bar appointment at an Apple store (if you live near one, mine is an hour away by train).
I'm also waiting on advice from my brother-in-law who maintains the Macs and Mac network in a publishing house. I'll post here if he says anything that might help.
I appreciate it is annoying but it may not be a problem even if it stays like that, when I bought my new MacBook pro (Snow Leopard) I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my white MacBook (also Snow Leopard) and from then until the release of Lion the following July the date was stuck on something like 28th November but updates still installed fine. I was pleasantly surprised when Lion jolted the 'last check' back into life, which is why I was annoyed it looked like Mountain Lion had frozen it again!
Anyway I hope it gets sorted, because although mine has updated I would like it to register my manual checks too.

    Un-install according to the developer's un-install instructions.
You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.
    CleanMyMac - Uninstall
    CleanMyMac2 Un-install
After un-installing, run this program to make sure you got all the pieces.
    EasyFind – Spotlight Replacement
    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

If you can run it under chrome, you have java installed.
There was some malware that exploited an older version of Java (not javascript) running in a Browser. Since few people use it Apple turned off Java by default in the Safari Browser.
If you need it for something, just turn it back on in Safari preferences (inside Safari). After a few months of non-use, you may find it has turned itself off again.

  • Mac OS X Server Software Support - Select, Preferred and Alliance

Is this the correct place to post about Mac OS X Server Software Support - Select, Preferred and Alliance?
    Mahalo and Aloha

If you are using PureFTP, then use it.
Server Admin is NOT designed to work in conjunction with non-Apple, 3rd-party products, or non-Apple configs of 3rd-party items such as Postfix or Amavisd, and certainly not for non-Apple-provided ftp services. Ignore Server Admin completely for FTP if you are using PureFTP.

  • Server Software Updates

Is it advisable to have Tiger servers that are replicas a version or two behind the Master in server software updates? I.E. Master at 10.4.8, some replicas at 10.4.7?

    That sounds a bit cumbersome.
Even disjoining the replicas sounds "much".
Having a good backup before updating is a good thing and having a recent archive doesn't hurt either.
But I think updating the master first and then the replicas should suffice. Seems to have worked for me...

  • MAC OS X  Software Updates Data Check

    Hello everyone,
i have a little problem. I get my internet connection trough a company network which is protected by a watchguard hardware firewall. The company network itself is not professionally configured and sometimes internet trough wifi dissapears if network internal backup procedures are happening. Long story short, i see that my Software Updates in Snow Leopard are partially downloaded on my Hardrive, but i have fears that the instable internet connection / Firewall maybe has corrupted the downloaded data. Is there something like a crc error check or maybe a md5 hash check built in Mac OS X to avoid installation of corrupted data on the Mac itself ?

Why not just download the updates from the Apple web site? http://support.apple.com/downloads/

  • Cloning a Mac OS X Server to a remote location

Scenario: A Mac Mini running Mac OS X Server is in location A and a second Mac Mini running Mac OS X Server is to be acquired and setup at a remote location.
Desire: Do a nightly backup of Server A to the second Mac Mini so that Server B is a bootable clone of the primary server.
Question: What is the best software/approach to do this?
Discussion: I'm familiar with and use SuperDuper, Synchronize Pro and Carbon Copy Cloner for performing file by file backups and synchronization where the hard drives are on the same server ... but I'm not sure if any of these are the best alternative to backup a MAMP Pro installation on the Server (along with other applications and data) to a remote server box.
I realize that particularly within the Moodle VLE (that will be running on the servers) that absolute links will still point to the primary server but that is not an issue for me. In the event of a catastrophic failure of Server A at least there would be an offsite clone that could be accessed if a few settings were changed.
BTW: Server A is hosted by a commercial hosting service and no backup drive is available on-site for a file x file backup/synchronization. We do have full access to the server via ARD, Timbuktu Pro, AFP, etc.

Can you expand your info on the use of these two approaches, particularly the mysql replication
Well, my approach requires that there's some kind of connectivity between the two machines - preferably a VPN network to secure the traffic, but it doesn't have to be done that way.
rsync essentially takes two directories - one local and one remote - and compares the differences. Depending on the switches you use it will copy the changes from one system to the other (or both if that's what you prefer). In this case I'd set it to copy the local web directory to the remote machine, so the remote machine has a copy of all the files.
rsync works best for static files (e.g. .html, .php, etc. in the case of a web application), but shouldn't be used for dynamic files such as your database files.
As for the data, MySQL has substantial built-in replication routines that are designed to keep multiple database servers in sync. There's far more to it than I can go into here, suffice to say it can maintain a real-time copy of your data on a second, remote machine, and you should read the documentation for the specifics.

  • 10.4 Server - software update server - push to clients

    Hello all, after some advice.
Weve recently built up a 10.4.7 Server running among other services, Software Update. We've been successfull in pushing out managed pref's to clients to retarget their update server etc, updates are working so thats fine..
heres the issue. most of our mac clients arent admins, they are regular users, thus every time an update needs to install - it will prompt for an admin user's credentials, which we cant have happening.
Is there a way, to configure either the update server or the clients, to receive updates and install them silently for instance? with no user intervention?
One way im considering, its a bit messy though, is using apple remote desktop to issue a UNIX command to all selected Mac's, telling them to launch 'softwareupdate -i -r' and execute as root (afaik, you need to be root to execute softwareupdate manually or something) But this seems flaky in testing so far.
    Thanks for any help.
    Eliot.

Excellent thanks for the suggestions guys... Ive been playing with the cron suggestion to begin with, it seems to work, as in it will download and install recommended updates. Although with the particular update I was trying to install, it didnt seem to follow through correctly.
it was the latest firmware update for the INTEL iMac's, according to software update via the terminal, it had downloaded and installed the update, and then required a reboot. ok, but after reboot, it hadnt kicked into the firmware install mode. I actually had to download this update via the gui software update in order for it to function correctly, ie reboot, install firmware, reboot again. which is odd?? could be a problem for future updates like this, when using an automated cron task for updates? Or am I just missing something, hehe?
Otherwise yeah, the ARD option sounds interesting, we're about to purchase ARD3, definately worth a look.

  • 10.7.5 lion server software update failed - whats the cause?

    Hi all,
I applied the software update for 10.7.5 to my Mac Mini Server, but it looks like it didn't apply correctly.
Server Admin and Server are unable to connect in order to manage system services, Software Update is not able to identify the packages on the machine and therefore gets hungup when it starts.  System services that were working prior to update are now failing (vpnd, webdav).
The system identifies itself as being on 10.7.5, but I believe a number of packages were not upgraded.  For example, the Server and Server Admin tools are showing the same modify times as before the update.  This seems to be confirmed by system.log.
Any ideas how I can get the packages applied?

I've done some more digging and it looks like the three packages included in the update have about 4000 files that didn't get installed.  A good number of them are .png or .icns files, but there are whole applications (e.g. VNCServer) that didn't get updated.
The system is currently in a state where it cannot install software via Software Update or via Installer.
    Any ideas?

  • How do you configure a  Mac to have two Software Update Servers?

If you have cascading Software Update servers configured and lets say one of the servers went down, is there a way to have the Mac clients automatically use the other server that is still up? I notice that you can edit the SoftwareUpdate plist on the Macs to add a "CatalogURL", would adding two URLs for different Software Update Servers do what I am asking or is there another way to do this?

    John Lockwood wrote:
This does mean you need to buy a DNS load balancer to do this. The Mac itself cannot.
FWIW, OS X Server is capable of performing round-robin access with the inbound traffic using multiple IP addresses for a single host name.  The addresses are each of the software update servers in your server pool.
This'll toss errors for some translations when one of the servers is down — you can tweak the definition if one of the servers is going to be offline for a while — but some of the updates will get through.
Set the DNS TTL fairly short — probably somewhere between a few minutes and an hour — to allow the DNS translations to be changed fairly quickly, if your software update servers are prone to outages.

  • Mac won't install Software Updates

I have a PPC G5 1.8 running 10.5.8 leopard. I try to run the updater and it tries but in the end it says software not updated volume "/". Please help.

    Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 4.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).
