Mac OS X server together with VPN provider?

Hi,
I have question that I'm hoping you can help me answer. I don't have a router that is DD-WRT compatible. But I need something similar - since PPTP VPN on iOS disconnect when it's put into sleep.
Do you know, or think that it is possible to setup Mac OS X Server with something Privat VPN? Or is it only for setting up and new personal VPN and use an existing server from a VPN provider like you.
I hope you understand what I'm asking :)

I would not recommend using the built-in firewall on an OS X Server box that is also running other services. You could put a server at the perimeter of your network and make it a firewall, an probably a pretty good one, but as soon as you start services, you open ports on the server itself. I also can't imagine that the firewall capabilities of a DSL modem would be that dependable or configurable. If you're looking for an inexpensive way, what you're thinking may work, but it would not be as secure as a good standalone firewall.
I vote for upgrading the firewall.

  • Mac in Windows server environment with SMB shares

    Hello Apple Support Community,
This is my first post here, so take it easy on me.
Here is a brief background before I explain the problem. I'm currently in an environment that has about 35 various Mac computers (Mac Pros, iMacs, Mac Book Pros, etc) from many different generations, but all running 10.8.2 or newer. The enviornment also has several Dell Servers running various OS versions (2003 Std, 2008 Std, and one 2012 Storage Server). Active Directory is currently in place and healthy. The 2012 Storage Server is where we are hosting all of the file shares. Users are connecting to these shares via smb.
We are experincing two problems that may or may not be related.
    Problem #1
Occasionally (I have yet to find consistency), when we drag and drop a folder from one location to the other (on the same server, in the same share, and usually source and destination reside in the same parent folder) or if we rename a folder, we'll be prompt for credentials with the message "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this."
Since our local username and password are different then the Active Directory username and password used to connect to the share, I have observed that usually typing in the local username and password allows this prompt to go away. Any other username or password does not work. However, once the prompt goes away, the folder never actually moves on the share or is renamed. This prompt for a password will repeat over and over until you go away, do something else in a different folder, then come back after a while, then it won't prompt you for a password for the same move or rename operation.
I thought this might be related to permissions at first as we just migrated the data from an old Mac Server to this new 2012 Storage Server, but I have since replicated the scenario with a test share and a series of test subfolders that I just created (no files were involved in the test, just folders). I have also opened permissions to everyone for both the share and the folder structure for this test.
    Problem #2
Similar to the scenario above, but rather than moving or renaming a folder or file, when we attempt to delete a folder it will occasionally pretend to delete, then appear back in the share as a folder that no one has permissions to. If you navigate away for a while and then return, the folder has actually been removed.
If anyone has any insight as to why we might be experiencing any of this behavior or direction for how to troubleshoot or solve this, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks!

    Hello?
    Anyone?
    Bueller...Bueller....Bueller
It's been a couple of weeks now and no one has any input to help me? Is there something I can provide to get some additional help?
I've done some research over the past couple of weeks and ran into an article (sorry, I have misplaced the source) that indicated adding the Mac to the windows domain would help with Problem #1 by providing single sign-on functionality. I bound all of the macs in the network to the domain and changed all of the user profiles from local to domain. They are now logging in with their domian credentials. For the most part, this appears to have solved the problem. I will find out more tomorrow as there appears to still be one user experiencing the same behavior even after adding his Mac to the domain and having him log in with his domain account and credentials.
This is, however, how the problem started in the first place. It began with just this one user reporting the problem, then eventually everyone was having the problem. I'm no longer feeling confident that this has actually solved the problem.
I've implemented ExtremeZ-IP on the storage server and have redirected the users to using AFP again. This appears to have solved Problem #2.
We now have two additional problems showing up on the network.
    Problem #3
Occasionally (again, having a hard time finding any consistency), after opening a file and working on it for a while, we are being presented with an error that a file cannot be written to. Once the error shows up, the problem is persistent. You can save the file as a different name in the same location, and it will take without error. You just can't save the file with the same name. It's as if the file is locked. If I reboot the windows server at the end of the day, the file that was locked no longer has a problem being written to.
We also see this problem with moving/renaming folders on occasion.
    Problem #4
Users are reporting that files in a folder sometimes do not appear (the folder appears as blank), but appear fine for others.
I have seen this issue when users connect with different protocols (one with smb and the other with afp - the smb connected user usually doesn't see the file) but in the process of changing profiles from domain to local, I have switched all users to AFP.
I could really use some help with this situation. Anything this community has to offer, suggest, or otherwise help me find resolution would be extremely appreciated.

  • I cannot get my iPad 2 to work with VPN provider.

I cannot get my iPad 2 to work with my VPN service provider.  Using OS 4.3.3.  iPad purchased in the USA.  Have heard there are issues with iPad 2 and VPN support.  Any suggestions?

You can try this ... hold down on the sleep button and the power button at the same time for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo on the screen, release the buttons and see if the iPad restarts and you can use it.

  • VirtualBox or OVM Server VM with VPN IP

    Hi,
I looking for a solution for the following issue:
    - connect through VPN a laptop to the intranet, but using a fixed IP address.
It is not feasible to get a fixed IP from the VPN server, as such I'm wondering if I connect the host machine to the VPN (get a dynamic IP) and then startup a VM, will it work if I allocate the fixed IP from the intranet to the VM? So I want to use the host just as a tunnel between the intranet and the VM with the fixed IP (due to this Oracle VM Server sounds more appropriate as it is a bare metal solution).
I have a VirtualBox (4.2.0) VM on a Win7 host and set to have a bridge to the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Virtual Miniport Adapter, but if in the VM (Oracle Linux 5) I set DHCP, eth0 can't be brought up (does not manage to get to the DHCP server) and if I set the fixed IP, I can't even ping the gateway, so this is why I'm asking that is it even possible what I'm thinking about?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
Didn’t work for me in the beginning using the bridge (when at the office this is my preferred method).
An now Works from HOME like charm - using NAT
    Here are the steps :
Connected to my office using Cisco any connect VPN (I believe u can use any VPN software).
Go to : Oracle Vm virtualBox Manager
Go to : My Oracle Linux 6.x VM.
Make sure that Settings -> network - > Adapter is set on NAT.
Restart your VM machine (u may power off - > power on) , as sometimes it doesn’t catch changes.
You should now Coca Cola Enjoy.

  • Mac OS X Server - Web Hosting & Media Server

Hi All - Need advice. I have MacPro and have purchased MacPro Server.
Here is what I plan to do with MacPro Server:
    1. Host couple of my personal websites, blogs etc.
    2. Use it as a iTunes Media Server so that I can access my iTunes content through VPN / Internet remotely.
I want to use my MacPro largely for Web development work (basically as a DEV environment) whereas MacPro Server will be my Production environment. I have a couple of questions and will be grateful for your advice:
    1. Is it a good practice to have iTunes Media Server on Mac OS X Server?
    2. Presently, I have all my iTunes library stored on 2 x 2TB hard drives within MacPro. I would really like to move these hard drives to my MacPro Server and import the content to iTunes there. Can I do it? Will I lose the ratings and other details?
    3. Will I be able to access iTunes on Mac OS X Server via Internet / VPN remotely?
    Thanks in advance!!

By the way they are using Internet Explorer 7 when opening these documents.

  • Old Web Server Software on Mac OS X Server 10.4.6?

I am wondering why my apache that is running is only 1.3.33 accordign to my webmin tool that my friend installed, the php and sql are old too.
I'm not a unix guru by any means and I want to upgrade these and enable GD etc, but I'm running 4 or more virtual servers by using the server tools and I don't want to break the builtin functionality of the server tools. Is apple going to upgrade this stuff on os x server?

Mac OS X Server ships with both Apache 1.3.33 and Apache 2.2 (in /opt/apache2).
You're more than welcome to disable Apache 1.3.x and use 2.2 if you prefer.
However, the Server Admin GUI will only currently work with Apache 1.3.x, so if you do you'll need to manage your configurations manually.

  • Private Expenses with Service Provider and Automatic Assignment

    Hi,
I have created Private Expense Type in Create Travel Expense Types for Individual Receipts.
In TRIP- Travel Expense Report when I try to split credit card transaction in TRIP, with the wizard, I see that system is throwing errors, that Private Expenses not assigned to any Service Provider, example- AX (AMEX).
    1. Do I have to assign AX as service provider in Assign Wage Types to Travel Expense Types for Individual Receipts
    2. Do I have to assign Private Expense type during splitting of Private expenses in Private Expense Wizard? I see there is a list of expense types in the drop down in Priv Expense Wizard. Cant system determine automatically the Private Expense Type ?
    Please suggest.

    Dear Vijay,
    1. Do I have to assign AX as service provider in Assign Wage Types to Travel Expense Types for Individual Receipts
If you maintain Service provider in "Assignment of Credit Card Transact.to Travel Expense Type", then yes you have assigned it as well in wage type assignment. In Wizart you try split or change assignment of another expense type and it seems it by pass it together with Service Provider assignment.
Unfortunately for the second question I will be not able to answer.
But you can check for all expense types you use for AMEX card transaction in "Travel Expense Types for Receipt" in bottom, there you set "Allow Wizard for this Expense Type" assign your Private expense type.
SAP Help documentation for this field:
    Expense Type for Private Shares
The receipt wizard uses this expense type to record the personal portion of an expense. This is required, in particular, when a receipt amount paid by credit card includes personal portions. In some cases, the company can be liable for such personal receipts. Therefore, they need to be recorded even when they are not reimbursed.
    Use
In the view "Create Travel Expense Types for Individual Receipts", you need to mark the expense type in this field as "private costs; no reimbursement to employee."
    Example
Your employer has received, and paid, a hotel bill for EUR 450. The bill lists the cost of EUR 400 for the hotel room, and the cost of EUR 50 for personal expenditures.
The best way to record this with the receipt wizard is to enter the expense type for private receipts in the "Expense Type for Private Share" field, in addition to the expense type HOTL. Also, to be able to run the receipt wizard for expense type HOTL, you need to select the "Allow Wizard for This Expense Type" indicator.

  • Mac os X Server Universal Binary install upgrade possible ?

Has anyone attempted the following upgrade pattern with the new mac pros with mac os X Universal Binary build ?
Take your PowerPC mac os X server build to an external hard drive (Carbon Copy clonning or via SuperDuper). Tie in the external hard drive to the Mac Pro . Upgrade the Mac os X server install via the DVD install for mac os X server coming with the mac pro . CCC it back to the mac pro ... watch the fireworks ?
I am still in waiting the machine but there are loads of data i would like to transfer from our my present mac os X server quad setup to the upcoming MacPro and doing this manipulation might make the transition soooo much easier than having to transport everything ...
I hope there are no other already started threads concerning this procedure but if such would be the case i apologize for the inconvinience caused and would be glad if reffering threads would be posted here ...
    G5 Quad 2.5 7TB xraid 16GB of ram.   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Mac os X server 10.4.7

From the looks of it the upgrade from Mac os X server PPC to Mac os X server Universal Binary is not possible from install disk .... i backed up a whole PPC drive loaded my Mac os X Server UB in the machine and booted off the CD on a MBP ... and the installer just wont take the PPC build as upgradable .. once again apple leaves us in the middle of the transition ... WHY ???? For those of us getting mac pros to run mac os x server applications this would be a great benefit to all parties involved and help solve the many dog heared problems we have faced all along in 10.4.
Edit: Same thing from a PPC standpoint a PPC build wont upgade to a Universal Binary build at all as it seems ... i am calling Apple support and hope to get further information to share ... wish me luck
I dare hope leopard behaves better than 10.4 has been especially on the server side which broke many functions that 10.3 got right pretty quickly and neatly .

  • New Edge server fails with DNS lookups - incoming mail stuck in queue

I just setup an Edge server, together with 2 Ex2013 servers with DAG. Sync works fine, however incoming mails are stuck at the edge server. The queue looks like this:
451 4.4.0 DNS query failed. The error was: DNS query failed with error ErrorRetry
Checking the logs, it also shows errors like this:
    2014-07-12T16:32:06.599Z,08D16C05D02E2774,SMTP,"ex2.internal.contoso.com,ex3.internal.contoso.com,ex4.internal.contoso.com",>,DNS server returned ErrorRetry reported by 0.0.0.0. [Domain:Result] = EX2.internal.contoso.com:ErrorRetry; EX3.internal.contoso.com:ErrorRetry; EX4.internal.contoso.com:ErrorRetry;
2014-07-12T16:32:06.599Z,08D16C05D02E2774,SMTP,"ex2.internal.contoso.com,ex3.internal.contoso.com,ex4.internal.contoso.com",-,"Messages: 0 Bytes: 0 (The DNS query for 'SmartHostConnectorDelivery':'ex2.internal.contoso.com,ex3.internal.contoso.com,ex4.internal.contoso.com':'e01d6f93-e25b-4e36-9f2f-c1c7c73889ae' failed with error : ErrorRetry)"
Now the network is a little special, as the edge server is not in DMZ, but simply in a workgroup in the same LAN as the other Exchange servers. The edge server NIC's are configured to use the internal AD DNS servers, and the edge server is able to lookup
all the other exchange servers (ie. ex2.internal.contoso.com).
So I wonder why the edge servers logs DNS lookup errors as long as the server it self can lookup the internal hostnames for Exchange.
Any help would be great, as all incoming mail is now stuck at the edge server.

  • VPN connection on Mac gives "PPP Server cannot be authenticated"

    Hello all
I am trying to connect my mac mini to my company's VPN. On my mac mini I tried the following to connect to VPN.
    - System Preferences -> Network
    - Created a new network, interface: VPN, VPN type: L2TP over IPSec, service name: Office VPN
    - Configuration: default, Server Address: 222.222.22.222, Account Name: user1
Authentication Settings -> User Authentication Password: (password), Machine Authentication Shared Secret: (secret)
This does connect the mac to the vpn but after an interval of 6-10 minutes I always get a "PPP server cannot be authenticated" error. I can't seem to understand what is going wrong over here. The same problem is with every mac trying to connect to this vpn. Windows PC users did not report a problem of such sort.
I checked the system logs as well. Here's what happened until the connection was disconnected.

Can somebody help me out over here? What could be going wrong over here?

I'm looking for much the same answer, so can't help with the big picture. However, the Firewall options are not in System Preferences, but in the Server Admin in the Dock. Click on it, click on the triangle next to your server's name, then go down to FIrewall.

  • Mac OS X Server on Windows Domain with Server 2003 DC

    Hello,
I work for a school based in Leicester and we have a full windows environment (server 2003) running about 300 XP machines and 22 macs connected to Active directory using a piece od software called Admit Mac.
Recently I went over to another school and to see there mac setup and how easy it is to image machines, subsequently we purchased a mac mini and installed MAC OS X Server on it. I want to be about to use this sever with Apple remote for the 20 macs we have by joining it to are domain and pulling the machines through using AD for Imaging etc.
Can this be done easily and what's your experience on the best way to go about doing it?
Any help would be fantastic partially if someone out there has done it!!

    Hi
+. . . pulling the machines through using AD for Imaging etc.+
Not sure what you mean by this? Creating images similar to RIS files (on the mac platform they're called nbis) can only be done using the System Image Utility. You can use the application itself if you want or an admin mac with the Server Admin Tools installed. AFAIK the application can only be run on the mac platform.
I doubt if nbis can be 'served' by your DC either if this is what you meant?
You might get a clearer idea if you read the documentation:

  • Issues with Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 and Windows File sharing

We are having lots of issues with our SMB share on Mac OS X Server 10.4.8. The main issues are the following:
    - Group ACLs seem to not work properly, and I have had to add dozens of manual permissions on a per-user basis
    - Often, users open a file in read-only mode, without any reason, and can't modify it
    - Often, users open a file with full write access, but then cannot save it and have to use a "save as function".
After having looked all over the Internet and on the Apple's discussions forum, it seems like this issue has been around for quite some time now:
    http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?forumID=702&threadID=&q=smbANDpermissions&objID=f702&dateRange=thisyear&userID=&numResults=15&rankBy=10001
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1546867&#1546867
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=647251
And no real answer/solution has been provided by Apple yet.
I also looked on Samba related pages, and it seems like these issues were Samba related (both ACL/OpenLDAP and Microsoft Office file handling issues), and the current version of Samba (3.0.23c) seem to have solved lots of issues in these areas:
    http://us1.samba.org/samba/history/samba-3.0.23c.html
Apple ships Samba 3.0.10 (16 Dec 2004) with 10.4.8, which makes the shipping version at list 15 versions (and 18 months) behind the current Samba release (30 Aug 2006).
People within the company are obviously quite unhappy with the situation and beyond me looking like a fool for migrating from Windows Server to OS X, I now need to find a solution to the issues.
I would like to know what is the official and Apple recommended way to solve this issue.
    Kind regards,
    Pejvan
It seems like Apple is totally ignoring the issues, users are facing with SMB shares, while their emphasize as a selling point how OS X Server is a great "windows file" server.

    Hiya
    Thanks for the reply.
    >Is there a UPS involved?
I wish there had been. I might not be having to deal with it now! :-)
    >If you boot from the Install Disc & use System Profiler there, does the Same RAM situation? Did you physically >check those slots? Thinking maybe the OS is kicking them out on bootup?
I've had the following suggested to me on another forum - "My guess on the RAM error is this. You have a processor that wants the RAM to be dual channeled and since it reads both A slot are populated it wants both B slots to be populated. Remove A2 and put it in B1"
But unless it is degrading performance I'll probably just leave it.
    > Still can't get it to boot from the Clone holding the Option/alt key at bootup?
I can get it to boot from the Clone using the option key but it's a pretty random event. I can try for ages and then suddenly it'll work. Or it may work first time. It does seems to work more easily after a PRAM zap. The funny thing is that once it is booted up it will re-start in any way I want it to (the boot volume, the clone, a disk, single user mode etc). It is just hard to boot from a full shutdown.
I'm thinking that if I ca get the start-up issue fixed then I can fix the RAID issue at my leisure and even add the hard-drive that the clone is currently on to the RAID array.
    Thanks again.
