Mac OS X start up tone - Still chimes with headphones in

I've just purchased a new Macbook and on my old Powerbook I put the cable from my JBL speakers in so the start up chime in Mac OS X would not be heard. However, with the new Macbook I can still hear the tone. Is there either;
1. Any way I can get around this problem, or
2. Any way to disable the chime completely

Yes, this happened as soon as I got the MacBook. I don't think this is a problem though, and is supposed to be doing this. Look at this post.
Particularly this part:
"Huy,
not in front of my MacBook right now, but funny thing, I noticed the startup chime as well when I restarted last night after doing the Quicktime/iTunes update-I had headphones plugged in, but the startup chime came from the internal speakers anyways."

  • When my desktop (Mac Power 5) starts a folder comes up with 2 heads which changes to a question mark. Does anyone know how to fix this.?

My Husband turned his desktop off without shutting down now When my desktop (Mac Power G5) starts up  a folder comes up with 2 heads which changes to a question mark. Does anyone know how to fix this.?

Step 1- Try booting to Startup Manager by holding Option/Alt key.
Select the boot source and click the right arrow.
Once booted, open System Preferences and select the desired boot volume.
Replacing the PRAM battery is likely wise if the machine keeps forgetting it's boot source.
    If that doesn't work,
Step 2-  Boot holding a mouse click, insert the OS X install disc and hold C to boot to the install disc.
Once booted, open Disk Utility and "Repair Disk" on the boot drive.
    Once done, reboot normally.

  • I Mac won't start -- we get apple logo with spinning wheel, question mark that disappears and then a blank blue screen

My daughter's old I Mac won't start. It is not backed up.  We want to get some things off of it if we can.
When we turn it on, we get the Apple logo with spinning wheel for awhile, then a question mark briefly and then a sky blue blank screen.  Is there any hope of getting this to work?  This computer is out of warranty.  Does it seem that if we reinstall the Operating System we might find old data?

First try restarting with the original install disc an run Disk Utility to repair the drive. If you have to re install the OS make sure you select archive and install or else everything will be lost.

  • Mac won't start...grey screen with timeout on 0xfd

My iMac is pretty new, a couple of months old...
I just started it up when I got home and I get a grey screen with something saying "Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus 0xfrd, timing out! (Addr: 3 EP: 2)". I have no idea what any of this means, at the top theres some sort of 0xfrd code. Also "Process 1 of exec of sbin/launched failed errno 8.." I don't get it as i'm no computer expert...can someone please help? I have no idea whats going on...if it helps I have got an audio interface plugged in via usb, and a usb synth, but thats it, and it's been fine...until now - but I have noticed it slowing down slightly over the last few days....
I need my mac for tomorrow...
    Thanks again,
    Harry

I tried this but it didn't work. I think it is my keyboard because even when I turn the computer on the green led on the caps lock button doesn't light up. I even tried a regular USB keyboard and I had the same result.
I guess I will have to find my leopard CD.
Is it possible to just restore system settings from the leopard cd so that I don't lose all my data?

  • Why do my internal speakers still play with headphones plugged in?

When I plug my headphones in, my mac does not recognize them. Why is this?

Nah it's a 2011 15" I'm starting to think I need to re-install the Headphone and audio drivers, it only happens occasionally, say if you plug it in as you are opening itunes, the sound will come from the speakers not headphones. but if you exit then plug them back in, then open itunes they're fine ... may just be a gap in apple's coding for bootcamp drivers

  • IPhone4s mic on phone still live with headphones in

With some recent software update? I noticed that when using earphones/mic (came w/ iphone) I was hearing background noise. People complained about wind noise, or other "static". Even when moving hands on the phone, sound is heard. The microphone on the phone itself (bottom) is staying live even when earphones/mic are plugged in. It makes a mic in the headset redundant - even a liability.
Went to Genius Bar. First genius said he had never seen this before, but was told (by another Genius) that this is a "feature" because people need the mic when they are plugged into their aux on their car radios for hands free. Not sure I trust 2 Geniuses on this one.
Wouldn't this "feature"/bug be an option and not a default? The Phone senses when the jack is plugged in. Couldn't it sense when a jack with mic is plugged in? What about an On/Off switch in Phone/Settings?
How do I get this turned off?

Yes, this happened as soon as I got the MacBook. I don't think this is a problem though, and is supposed to be doing this. Look at this post.

  • Have a still folder with a question mark and OS on external HDD isn't loading onto the Mac Pro

Good Morning....... I'm having an issue with this Mac Pro I've recently purchased that came with an 500GB HDD and I added an 2TB HDD also, but it never had an OS on it and when you power on the Mac Pro, you'll get a still folder with a question mark on it. I am very determined to get this situation corrected!!! I had got a copy of Snow Leopard on a blank DVD from a friend of mine but nothing had changed or occurred when I put it in the optical drive & I even saved Maverick installation on an external HDD; it read the drive when I held down the option key during the startup chime, I choose the external because that’s the only volume it shown on the screen; nothing else!!! No sign of the copied disk, the two HDDs that's in the Mac Pro, just the external HDD with the OS on it; I choose the external with Maverick on it but it still doesn't read and then a still folder with the question mark appears..... Can someone please help & save me PLEASE?????????

Buy a retail copy of Snow Leopard, then we can "chat" and get you with a system installed.

  • Mac won't start blinking folder with ?

Hello have a question, my mac won t start, it appears a folder with a ? Inside....can anybody help me.....

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Using still images with Final Cut (and the apple suite in general)

I have had a re-occuring and long term problem that has caused me many lost hours of head scratching and work arounds, and as of yet I have not been able to come up with a good solution.
Its to do with integrating still images with the Final Cut suite.
If I receive a high quality image from a client to use in their video and I then try importing it into Final Cut and animating it, it always ends up looking like a pile of ahem. Often I will get "swimming" lines appear across fine detail on the image, and parts of it will flicker as it moves across the screen. For instance, if I have a picture of some blinds or other fine detail (especially horizontal and vertical lines), when I add a grow and throw movement to it the detail will become very noisy - buzzing and flickering like mad.
I have found I can counter this by resizing the image in photoshop to a resolution closer to SD video (700w or 500h) - but I always end up losing detail, and the flickering and noise is only reduced, not eliminated. Other things that have helped are blur effects applied at a very low level, like 0.5 blur, so its not noticeable visually, but Final Cut seems to treat it differently and quieten the noise and flicker down.
However, all of these workarounds are ultimately still giving a reduced quality product.
Also, this problem is not necessarily constrained to Final Cut, I am currently fighting DVD Studio Pro because it is murdering the text quality in a stills slideshow I am creating - and in this situation there is no animation being applied. No matter what file type (psd, jpeg, tiff, png...) or size I output the text and images from Photoshop in, the moment DVD studio pro gets hold of it, it turns to cripe.
For a while I was putting it down to the fact that I usually edit in SD (PAL) formats, and there just wasn't the resolution available to reproduce fine detail. However, I do often see other people achieving pin-sharp fine detail on still images and text in SD formats (the Apple templates are a good example)
So, my question to you, oh great and high boffins, if you are dealing with still images and text, how do you do it? How do you work around any noise problems you have, and how do you produce those pin-sharp images (both moving and still) I see in other professional productions?
    Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

still images with too high a resolution will always cause problems. this is due to the detail of the image being finer than the scanline of the tv can display ... obviously this will caise the image to flicker as these details alternately appear and disappear as and when the scanline can display them. as you have discovered, the answer is to apply a very small blur, the effect being that the detail is spread by the blur such that the scanline can dislay it correctly.
text issues are often rooted in the same problem ... unless the text is placed very carefully (whole even number on the y axis) then the quality may be impaired due to the resulting interlacing/scanline issues

  • Grey screen only after start up tone

Have a 2008 Mac Pro, when I start it up, I get the start up tone, then it just goes to a gray screen.  A few times yesterday, the Apple logo would show up with the spinning wheel...even once got the "No Entry" sign.  Is this a power supply issue or a drive issue or something else?  Is there any way to get the info of the drives?

The chime is generated in software after millions of instructions have been executed. It indicates that if an appropriate Boot device can be found, booting is likely.
The gray screen can only occur after the software initializes the display.
The Gray Apple is loaded off a Boot device -- it is not present in the ROM code available at Startup.
In summary, you have progressed far beyond fundamental problems like power supplies. This article address the "No entry" sign:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • My mac won't start up it keeps on chiming tried o

My mac won't start had a power cut and now all it does is chimes.
Tried to press options and c but still continues to chime

You could try the ol SMC reset.
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

If it still does not work, Restart using your 10.5 Install DVD as the boot volume holding down C from chime sound to apple logo appearance, then after selecting your language from the menu bar go to Utilities > Disk Utilities, and run Repair Disk on your Mac's HDD. Afterwards, exit DU, exit Install, restart normally.

  • Every other day, my mac won't start up

every other day, my mac won't start up. my keyboard would light up and i hear the system start but nothing is appearing in the screen. i would have to press the start button until the screen actually shows up.. why does it do that?

Have you just tried repairing with Disk Utility?
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Fans & hard drive spin, no start up tone or display... help?

I just sold my old G4 tower on ebay, and the buyer tells me there's no start up tone or anything on his monitor, but the hard drive spins and so do the fans. The CD drawer opens but holding "c" and booting from the software disk doesn't work. He's tried resetting the pram, pressing the cuda switch and removing the battery. I of course made sure the computer ran before I shipped it, and in fact this computer has never given me any problems whatsoever. Does anyone have suggestions for what to do from here? Or even a guess as to what happened... I'm confused because there must have been some damage during shipping, but the box was fine and the computer was fine inside as well. On top of that, I'd expect some kind of an impact to affect moving parts like the hard drive, but that spins with no problems, and if it was just a hard drive problem booting from the software disk should work.

Hi, Alex, and welcome to the Discussions!
Any chance that the new Mac owner might join the Discussions and get an independent review and advice from the Members? We'd be happy to help him try to get up and running, as long as it's kept independent from this particular topic (since this really isn't a place for a potential buyer-seller dispute...)
What model Mac are we referring to here?
As previously referred to, the startup memory settings are commonly lost when one has a weak, dead, or defective battery and the Mac is then disconnected from an AC power source for a period of time. Oftentimes, the Mac can be restarted by removing the battery completely, doing a PMU reset, hooking up the power cord, and restarting with the battery removed. This might confirm that the Mac is indeed okay, perhaps maybe just needing a new battery (which he can test with a voltmeter, per Texas Mac Man's Tutorial).
You didn't mention whether or not the owner is using your original monitor, mouse and keyboard. This could be pertinent information in troubleshooting this, if the PMU reset/battery doesn't correct things.
