Mac OS X update downloads but won't install

When I try to update Mac OS X combined update 10.7.4 on MBP, it downloads but won't install. I get a message that says it couldn't expand and may be corrupted. This has happened multiple times now.
I thought it might be due to lack of space on the hard drive so i cleared some space (there's now at least 49GB space) and it still won't work. I also have updates for Motion Supplemental Control and Final Cut Pro X supplemental that do the same. Tried doing it one by one, and tried downloading myself but the problem seems to be the expanding installing not the downloading.
Anyone else had this problem and solved it??

You may have a permissions issue that's preventing access to the downloaded files.
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities and click the "Repair Disk Permissions" option.
Once complete, try installing the update again.

  • Acrobat 9.0 Pro and Office 2008 updates download but won't install

I hope I'm not alone experiencing the following difficulties installing third party patches and updates and that someone who reads this may recognize the problem…and its solution. I've run Adobe Updater (6?) for CS4 Design Standard which includes Acrobat 9.0 Professional, and subsequently, Microsoft Autoupdate for Office 2008 v12.0.1, but find that neither will install the downloaded updates which disappear immediately after an (unsuccessful) installation attempt.
Disk space is not a problem (500GB HD) nor is memory (4GB RAM); I'm using OS 10.6.4 (10F569) which is the most current set of OS updates I can locate. I had successfully been running CS4 with Adobe's most recent patches (e.g. P'Shop 11.0.2 and Acrobat 9.3.3) until the 9.3.4 patch failed to install with the message that +"Safari and Acrobat apps must be closed in order to proceed"+—they were closed as was everything else that wasn't essential according to a check of the Acitivity Window. A grab of the alert panel reads:
+"AcroProUPd934_all Update Failed: The Patch has failed because the application has been modified since it was originally installed (for example, plug-ins may have been disabled). Please go to the Adobe support website for more information regarding how to re-enable disabled components prior to installing the patch, or you can uninstall and reinstall the application, and then reinstall the patch."+
Of course, uninstalling CS4 and reinstalling the entire suite of apps reverts all of them to their original versions, now none of them will accept an update…whether manually downloaded and fed to it or by using Adobe's most recent AutoUpdater. The most consistent message is an alert panel stating that in order to continue, Safari and Acrobat applications must be closed—which they are.
Not surprisingly, after nearly 8 hours on a cell phone with Adobe Tech Support in Delhi, 5 different techs and a manager, the case remains open a week later; it seems +"no one has ever seen or heard of this problem before"+ and an overly apologetic manager could only repeat +"it's [Adobe] policy to remove all copies of CS4 from existence once CS5 is introduced."+ While we waited for 500MB of updates to download more than once, a helpful tech suggested I'd have more luck finding a used copy of CS4 on the net than getting a link to another download from Adobe.
With regard to Microsoft Office 2008, I'd been running v12.0.1 and the MS Autoupdate app has tried to download and install v12.1.0 (and those which follow) but when installation is attempted, an alert panel reads:
+"There is a problem with the Office database. Office might be unable to access the data base or the database file might be damaged. Without the database, you might be unable to use the Address Book, Scrapbook, and other features that store your personal information. To rebuild the database, Open Microsoft Office 2008/Office, and then open the Microsoft Database Utility. For more information, open the Database Utility application, and on the Help menu, click Database Utility Help."+
All attempts to rebuild the database fail, noting…
+ERROR: Failed to open database [Head]+
    +ERROR: Corruption opening database [16003:""]+
    ======================
    +Scan Ended+
    ====================
Two hours on the phone with a relentlessly pleasant Nova Scotian tech for Microsoft revealed little but the suggestion that +"the app doesn't seem to be able to recognize your hard drive. I've never seen this problem before."+
With luck, perhaps someone reading this far recognizes the issue and can offer a solution? It will be gratefully received! Thanks,
    David

Disk space is not a problem (500GB HD)
How much space is available out of the 500GB?
Have you tried any of the following:
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
    Click _*Repair Disk.*_
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and try the installations again.

  • HT1338 10.6.8 updates download but won't install

I run OSX 10.6.8 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 MacbookPro 8,1 and for the life of me I cannot get the 14+ software updates to install.
The technology should be invisible, that's the whole reason I abandoned Windows for Mac (so I could just do things and be insulated from technical b.s. I'm not qualified to troubleshoot in the first place.)
There are as I said at least 14 discrete software updates available according to Software Update. Everyone of them has been downloaded, and demands a restart post-install.
Yet when I click "Install 14 items" the computer throws a Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update in my face, prompts me to reboot, and thus the loop completes and repeats.
    Any suggestions please?
p.s. - Yes, I've run the disk utility and verified and repaired the disk permissions as well as verified the disk itself.
I'm at wit's end. Any help is appreciated.

First off, I would never install all 14 at once, especially since restarts are required. Tedious as it may be, I would install them one by one. Running all of them at once will make your computer choke on them and probably make a big mess.
Do you really need all 14? Just because SU offers them, doesn't mean you have to get them all. And just because it looks like Apple is making it possible to install all 14 in a row, doesn't mean that's a good idea. In fact it's rather crazy.
And, it seems you need the firmware update to proceed. So why not get that done. Just be sure there's no likelihood of a power interruption. Run the MBP from the AC adaptor or be sure the battery is in excellent shape.
Personally, I never run updates from software update. I only use it to see what's needed and then I get the standalones from Apple downloads. I also run "serious" updates booted in Safe Mode. Less chance of a conflict with some third party item.

  • HT1338 Itunes 11 & Mac OS X 10.7 downloaded, but won't install. I get message "folder cannot be created"

I've downloaded updates for iTunes & Mac OS X 10.7. But they won't install.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The latest iTunes version is 11.0.1 version. 11.0.2 does not exist. Have you tried opening Apple menu > Software Update and install iTunes 11.0.1? If it doesn't show up, you have already iTunes 11.0.1

  • Logic Pro X additional content will download but won't install

    Hi,
I have Logic Pro X (10.0.1) installed on my 2012 Macbook Pro i7 2.6Ghz 8Gb Ram. I am able download the addition content but now just hangs & it has only installed the producer patches, surrond reverbs, garage band 11 sounds & instruments & the jam packs which I believe were there from my Logic Pro 9.
I have read support forum threads where peiople have downloaded it in smaller sections 1 or 2GB at a time with success, I have tried this & in smaller sections with no success.....it just still hangs saying "installing Orchestra" or whatever section I'm trying to install.
    Can anyone help?
I went through **** to install the program itself as the initial installion just hung too on the "Essential Sounds and Instruments for Logic Pro & Mainstage", I finally installed after getting the content download link from a support thread.
Apple support is s***, I emailed about them about the download (after spending my £139.99) only to wait 24 hours for them to say delete it & try again (like we wouldn't have though of & done that already). After repling to say that & waiting another 24 hours they said here is an email address to our Tech support or a premium number to call WFT!!!!
Now the additional content won't install, between my Macbook Pro & Logic Pro X the money I've spent - Apple are taking the ****.
    Please can some one help?
    Thanks

Install on my Core2Duo 17" MacBook Pro went flawlessly, but install on my 8 Core Mac Pro suffered this problem.  Many thanks for the solution Don, it worked for me ;-)
I am trying hard to supress an ironic chuckle though, reading other posts in this thread .... suggesting that people should call Apple Tech Support and expressing incredulity that people weren't doing this as their first option.
Well I can say say that after several calls to Apple Tech Support, amounting to several hours on the phone, and well over an hour on the phone with them today, I was informed that this problem is a known bug, and that Apple are working on a solution.  They couldn't tell me what the bug is, what machines are affected, or what else might trigger it, or when a bug release might be due.
Their troubleshooting steps basically involved various reboots, repairing disc permissions, reseting the user home directory via terminal, booting up in recovery mode (but not safe mode as per this solution) trashing various preferences files, and, as a final step, uninstalling and reinstalling from scratch.
Only when all that failed was I told that there is a known bug that Apple are working on.
I came here to see what the community was saying, as the Tech Support guy did say there was likely to be some info on the forums.  Lo and behold, a solution is posted and it works.
Why are Apple's Tech Support (in the UK at least) not aware of this?
Oh well, at least I'm up and running on my Mac Pro now.
    Thanks again Don,
    Cheers,
    Nigel

  • IOS8.02 downloaded but won't install

New software won't install on my iPhone 5 because it is unable to verify because I'm not connected to the internet.... which I am, and using Safari!
I've found other threads about this but the "resetting" suggested doesn't work.
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do? Is it anything to do with updating from iOS 7.1 (I didn't install anything after that).
Thanks for any suggestions, this is driving me bonkers!!

    Hi J Breel
That's what worked for me. It downloaded all 900+ Mb using wi-fi, but would not verify when I went to install. Said I wasn't on the internet (but checked using Safari and I was!). I switched the wi-fi off on the phone after many attempts, and tried using 4G only.... it worked immediately. I don't think it was a coincidence!
I was at work and maybe our wifi network had some weird setting that wouldn't allow verification.... no idea really, but give it a go, nothing to lose! Make sure you download on wifi though..... it's a big file for 3G!
    Good luck!

Ever since iOS 5.1.1 came out, I have been trying to install it to my iPad 2.  It is downloaded but I get the "Unable to Install Update" screen which says, "An error occurred installing iOS 5.1.1" but no other information is provided.  Do I have to do a complete restore to get this to install?

  • Photoshop will download but won't install

I have downloaded illustrator and it is working properly but I can't install any others. I've downloaded photoshop 3 times but it wont install. It says error with illustrator at stop installation at 1% every time. it keeps popping up close ilflustrator to continue installation. I've restarted every time to ensure illustrator couldn't be running as it hasn't ixed the problem. Can someone help I'm sick of having to keep downloading the same thing

For your next step I would recommend you review your installation logs to determine the cause of the failure.  You can find details on how to accomplish this at Troubleshoot with install logs | CS5, CS5.5, CS6 - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/troubleshoot-install-logs-cs5-cs5.html.

  • Update Downloads but will not Install (and a few other issues)

My dInc2 keeps telling me I have an update. I download the firmware and then it tells me that if I install I won't be able to use the phone. This is fine - it's what always happens. Except it NEVER installs. Ever. I've tried a million times. And more recently, my clock disappeared. I was so glad I wasn't having that issue - but then it happened. Has anyone else experienced the issue of updates not installing? How do I fix it?

AngM627,  I can imagine how frustrating it must be for you to keep receiving the notification advising you to update your phone software. Do you mind telling me which software version is on your Incredible 2?
