If this is a PIN lockout as described, then it's an anti-theft feature. You will need Apple's assistance to unlock it. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your nearest Apple Store. Be prepared to submit proof of ownership.

    Hello, sullivja.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an article I would recommend going through when experiencing this issue.

  • Error invoking Mac OS X Utilities via cmd-R

I get an error-box asking for 'Mac OS reinstall' after trying to invoke Mac OS X Utilities via 'cmd-R' for startup.
The MacBookPro has been working fine without visible issues on Lion after normal startup. What do?
    Thanks for advice!

My goal was to create a bootable USB-stick based on Lion.
For this I rebooted with the 'cmd-R' Option without any external HD or DVD connected. Apparently this invokes what you call the 'Recovery HD' (partition). Then the error occurs.
I have exactly the same problem. This happened because of an interrupt to the reinstallation process. After the interrupt, whenever I reboot my lion with the cmd-R option, it gives me the error message: 'There was a problem installing "Mac OS X" Try reinstalling.' in exactly the same screen. After I press ok, I am in the installer. But  I cannot figure out how to reinstall. The problem is definitely with the os in the recovery disk partition, not the full lion os in the regular disk partition.
Some people have encountered the same error message. They contacted Apple and were asked to reset the PRAM. I looked through what it did. I believe that it is an overkill. There should be some easier way to fix it. Let me know if anyone knows the details of what happens when BaseSystem.dmg is run.

  • Stuck on mac os x utilities

my macbook pro says it has no start up disk and now im stuck on mac os x utilities with four options to use (time machine) or (install moutain lion) or (use internet for help) or (disk utility).

Use Disk Utility to repair your system disk drive because it sound like it has lost the operating system.
If it can be repaired then install Mountain Lion.

  • Why did Mac OS X Utilities come up on my Macbook pro?, Why did Mac OS X Utilities come up on my Macbook pro?

i need help because mac os x utilities showed up as soon as i started my computer and im not sure why can soemone tell me how i can fix this problem without erasing all of my files/documents

What happened is for some reason OS X isn't booting, so it booted into Recovery (either Recovery HD partition or Internet Recovery if you saw a globe thingy)
So you use Disk Utility to repair/permissions on the Macintosh HD partition. Do not use it to Erase the Macintosh HD partition, that WILL erase your files.
The firmware might have just gotten the wrong partiiton to boot from messed up, hold the option key down ona wired or built in keyboard while booting the computer, see if you can boot the Macintosh HD partition with OS X, then set Startup Disk in System Preferences to remind the firmware which correct partition it's supposed to boot from.
Run through these list of fixes, or take your machine to someone who can.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Apple doesn't do data recovery, they will wipe your drive and blame you for not making a backup of your files, but a local PC/Mac repair shop can do data recovery before they wipe and intstall or fix your machine.

  • Stuck at mac os x utilites/internet recovery only option when booting up?

Okay I have a macbook pro I bought from someone for $5, I was emptying the trash and this dude goes towards and it and throws it in the garbage can, I ask whats wrong with it, he says he does not know and it only goes to mac os x utilities, when you put internet recovery so i offered him $5 for it even though it is in the trash he accepts and says good luck and he drives off. Their is no disk drives when trying to recover only internet recoevery, when I try Clicking reinstall mac os x it says install information cannot be found, I Need a step to step guide on how to make a recovery hd, The hard drive is in, and their is a disk1 with MAC OS X Base system.

You will need to boot the computer using Internet Recovery in order to install OS X properly. You cannot use the OS X installed by someone else.
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Started my MacBook Pro and the Mac OS X Utilities screen shows up. Not sure what to do.

When I restarted my computer, it booted to the Mac OS X Utilities screen. I'm not sure what to do from here.

Odd. It apparently booted into Recovery Mode.
For good measure, choose Disk Utility, click on the Macintosh HD volume on the left and run Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions by clicking on the buttons. Then quit, restart and hold down the Option key prior to the startup chime. When a list of disk icons pops up, click on Macintosh and the arrow to boot from it.
If this happens again in the future, use AppleExpert's instructions for resetting the default boot volume.

  • How do I bring up Mac OS X Utilities without a Mac keyboard?

I am trying to repair, restore, or reinstall Mac OS X Software. The instructions say to hold down Command and R but I do not have a mac keyboard, therefore do not have a command key. I called tech support last time and they found an alternate key but I can't remember what the key is and can't find the paper I wrote it down on. I tried calling tech support again, but they are charging me this time, and I don't have the money. Does anyone happen to know how I can bring up disk utilities while restarting my computer?
    Thanks in advance!

Try using the OPTION (Alt) key. Immediately after the chime press and hold the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the Recovery HD icon then click on the arrow button below the icon. And, go get yourself a properly compatible keyboard.

  • On start up mac goes to utilities

at start up mac book pro goes to grey screen and utilites box

Open Startup Disk preferences. If you have designated the Recovery HD as the startup disk, then change that to your normal startup disk and click on the Restart button. On the other hand if you can't start up or can't find your startup disk, then.
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Macbook Pro keeps going to Mac OS X Utilities on start-up and can't do anything to get past it. I have tried everything.. even installing Mac OS X Lion again and after 6 hours of loading it said it couldn't load! Please help!?

    ..

This worked amazingly!! Thanks for the post awvik360!
I was able to access the internal hard drive and perform a permissions fix through disk utility and re-apply the OS X 10.5.6 combo update on a totally debilitated machine (Mac Pro early 08).
    Some clarification though:
    {{ I used a MacBook Pro instead of USB/ExternalHD to run a working copy of OS X. }}
~ Just start up the healthy OS X (laptop) in target disk mode (hold 't' key while it powers up)
~ Connect it to the impaired Mac with the highest speed cable available (fire800>fire400>USB)
~ Start up the impaired Mac while holding the alt/option key to select the boot drive.
~ Select the connected OS X (laptop hard disk) and start er up.
~ Run disk utility and you can now use the Fix Permissions option on the impaired Mac's internal hard drive.
~ Run the OS X Combo Update (or presumably other offending update/program) and make sure to change the destination to the internal disk of the impaired Mac
~ Shut down, unplug target disk, start up, and you should be good to go.
I was in some kind of uber-kernel panic and could not start up in safe mode OR from the installation disc, and this worked! Definitely a good emergency procedure to have in your back pocket.
Note: ...target disk pairing must be in this direction. I tried setting up the impaired Mac as target and connecting it to running laptop, and it let me run the install fine, but it didn't fix the problem...must be something with permissions that the impaired Mac needs to install to itself, even if the OS is running on another disk/machine.

  • HT2518 I have Windows Migration Assistant running and it is asking for me to go to Mac and open Utilities Folder... BUT on the Mac I had already started the TF process... it saw my PC, I chose it and now it says "Select the information to Transfer"

Windows Migration Assitant is running on my PC; the Mac is running "Select the information to transfer" so I can't follow the instructions from Windows Migration Assitant. It seems like I should stop the new Mac?

You need "sysinternal's process explorer", it is free and can replace the Microsoft process explorer, that you get by "CTRL+ALT+DELETE". Either program will allow you to kill the instances of FF that didn't die as they should have, when you closed them. Sysinternal is easier to use, it is a graphic display with many options. Do not push "CTRL+ALT+DELETE" twice unless you want to reboot, that is its default behaviour under Microsoft.

  • Can't get back to login screen after Mac OS X Utilities

I wanted to repair my disk so I did Command R on restart. However from here I cant seem to get back. I attempted going to a start up disk but nothing showed up on the list. I also tried to reinstall Mac OS X lion but it said my recovery HD is locked. I would use time machine however i didnt have my usb hard drive attached for the past day and I have saved documents on my current desktop that are due tomorrow. Please help.

  • How do I restore my computer if when I restart the Mac OS X Utilities screen comes up?

I've tried all of the options, and none of them allow me to either repair, restore, recover from back up, or even erase my main hard drive.  All of the options only give me the option to do one of the fixes to one of my external drives.
My computer is a iMac with Mountain Lion Installed.  Unfortunately, I can't tell you much more than that b/c I can't access the "About this Mac" function.
    HELP! PLEASE!

It appears that your internal hard disk isn't being recognized at all, as if it is not installed. If that is the case the only option is replacement.
An Apple Store perform the repair, or you can. If you elect to DIY I recommend the resources of ifixit.com as a place to start.
