Mac OS X v10.5.8  problems loading Facebook

I have been having these problems for over a year now.
I am trying to load Facebook on Firefox and I am getting the following  text on the bottom left of my screen.
waiting for fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net
I have been able to use Firefox for loading and Safari didn't want to work. Now Firefox will not load. Two days in a row now.
Anyone know what that means?
Safari is stuck also. It says "loading "https://www.facebook.com/", completed 2 of 6 items
It's stuck on number 3. That could be the same thing holding up Firefox.
I'm using  a Mac OS X v10.5.8
Any ideas?

Hi, tough to tell, but...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If it still doesn't work...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
Click OK.
Have you reset the Modem/Router?

  • Firefox v26.o, Google, Mac OS X v10.6.8 - Problem: text is cramped/superimposed on most websites. Any solution?

I am running Firefox v26.0 and using Mac OS X v10.6.8. When I go to most webpages using Google search, more often than not the displayed text is vertically cramped, overlaid or displaced e.g., some lines of text are superimposed over others. Is this a known problem and is there a fix? Thanks!

Hello AppleMac1, try '''disabling graphics hardware acceleration'''. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*On Mac click on the Firefox menu and select Preferences...to access the preferences window.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • Problem loading Facebook in Safari

I'm having a problem with Facebook and Safari. I think it's a network related issue, but cant understand why it would be. Im at university halls connected via Ethernet.
The webpage misses out backgrounds, buttons and everything graphical on the facebook site, instead loading what looks like a very simplified HTML plain text version of Facebook with everything presented in a single list.
    Can anyone help?

    Back up all data.
Unlock the Network preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Cllck Advanced, open the DNS tab, and change the server addresses to the following:
              8.8.8.8
              8.8.4.4
That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.
    In Safari, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. Any difference?
    Notes:
    1. If you lose Internet access after making the above change to your network settings, delete the Google servers in the  Network preference pane, then select the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. That should restore the original DNS settings; otherwise restore them yourself. Remember that you must click Apply in order for any changes to take effect.
    2. I don't use Google DNS myself, though I have tested it, and I'm not recommending it or any other DNS provider; the server addresses are offered merely for testing purposes. There may be privacy and technical issues involved in using that service, which you should investigate personally before you decide whether to keep the settings. Other public DNS services exist.

Recently I'm getting trouble when I log onto my Facebook page, the rest of the browsing is ok, not 100% as it should but not as worse as Facebook page. I contacted Facebook and they say that is safari's fault. what should I do ?

I loaded Mac OS X v10.7 Lion yesterday. Everything’s running fine, except for a simple problem. Any time I want to copy a file, JPEG, etc., I am prompted “Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this.” I don’t want this!! Is there a way to unlock “Finder” or rid this process?

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Can't load Facebook on Firefox . Suspect malware/trojan. Downloaded 3 free scan/remove programs, all end in .exe and my Mac wants to know which "Application" to use to run them. Help?!

when I click on any of them, they don't just open/run. they want to know what application to use to open them. do these work for my Mac, or is there another free alternative?
Here's what the Mozilla page above said
Firefox never finishes loading certain websites
If specific websites (not all) start to load, but never finish (i.e. The Firefox activity indicator may spin for several minutes, or the status bar may show "Done" on a blank page), it is either because of a software trojan called Vundo, or a file being in the wrong format.

    * Vundo trojan variant
    o Search for malware
    o More help
    * JavaScript file format
    Vundo trojan variant
A variant of the Vundo trojan is known to cause Firefox to have problems loading certain high-traffic sites, including Google, Yahoo, MySpace, Facebook, and more.
    Search for malware
Not all variants of the Vundo trojan can be detected or removed by malware scanners. However, you should scan your computer for infections first:
    * Run the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool.
    * Run a full system virus scan with something other than your normal program:
o A '''free solution online is Kaspersky's online scanner'''.
    * Run a full system spyware scan with something other than your normal program:
    o MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
o '''SUPERAntiSpyware''' is known to detect many variants of Vundo, and has a free version.
    o '''Spybot S&D''' is a well-known free solution.
    More help
If you're having a problem loading sites other than the one described above, see the Error loading websites article to see if it addresses your problem. You can also check your Internet security software - resetting permissions for Firefox can often fix similar problems.
There can be other causes of the symptoms described above. Before attempting these instructions, try the methods described in the Basic Troubleshooting article to see if they will address your problem.
If you still have problems after scanning, you may ask a support question.

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard

I want to buy and install the iLife'09, but read that I need to upgrade to Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard. When I did a search on the Apple store site, all that came up is Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Family Pack (?) I don't think I can go directly from Tiger to Snow Leopard, so what are my options? Also, I see that some are having problems with Leopard. Have these been ironed out? I only want to upgrade so I can get the new iMovie in iLIfe'09. Is it worth the trouble?

I don't think I can go directly from Tiger to Snow Leopard
You can, except your computer (G5) won't run Snow Leopard (requires Intel Mac).
For Leopard, try calling Apple Support (not Sales). It used to be that when Leopard first came out you could still get Tiger through Support, not Sales. Maybe the same applies to Leopard.
Also, I see that some are having problems with Leopard. Have these been ironed out?
A somewhat sweeping statement. What issues specifically?
    Is it worth the trouble?
Ah, as a Tiger user you got me on that one.

  • Using Firefox 7 loads Facebook very very slowly whereas Firefox 6.0.2 has no problems nor does IE

When I or my family attempt to load Facebook and the apps it either takes forever or not at all to load. Other websites are slow, but not as bad. This happens only when we upgrade to Firefox 7, but when using Firefox 6.0.2 we do not have any problems what so ever.

Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache.
    * Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
    * Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
    * Press "Cmd + Shift + R" (MAC)
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • HT2693 Upgrading from Mac OS X v10.7.5 to to Mountain Lion 10.8

    Hi,
I would like to update my Mac OS X v10.7.5 to to Mountain Lion. But what would happen if I am downloading/upgrading my MacBook and somehow network gets interrupted?
Please let me know the whole process.
    Thanks in Advance....
    Amit

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
If you are downloading and the connection is interrupted, then you will need to start over again. You don't upgrade the computer until AFTER you have downloaded the Mountain Lion installer. Also, see the following:
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You
must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes
        installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
      a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
          the process has completed.
      d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
      f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
         drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
      a. Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
      b. Open Disk Utility.
      c. Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
      d. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      e. Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
      f. Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
      g. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
As an alternative to the above (you still have to do your own download of Lion/Mountain Lion) you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process of Steps 2 through 4.

No problems have been reported with Mountain Lion but you may wish to download the free trial using the link below and test the software for 30 days. If this is your first purchase you may wish to wait for PSE11 which is usually issued in September.
