Mac OS X v10.6 system update

I currently have a Mac OS X v10.5.8 and need to update to 10.6 at least in order to download latest versions of other software such as Flash Player.  Since I can't seem to find this update anywhere, does anyone know how/where I can find this update?

Excellent. I knew you had concerns about Lion but I didn't wish to overload the OP with the positives and negetives as they were only inquiring about version updates. I myself have extreme concerns about Windows 7 - but, like you, I decided life was too short to worry about such things. (of course, having Vista and XP handy on disc doesn't hurt either).
What really is interesting is the Linux angle. Here we have an operating system (specifically. Ubuntu) that looks and acts so much better then MacOS or Windows 7. It's functionality it's unsurpassed. However, you have to run a compability program to run Windows applications, thus slowing it down and making it unweildy (at least by my experiance). Also, you tend to spend way too much time 'working around' issues on the command line.
Point is, there is no perfect operating system - yet. I doubt there will ever be. All we can really do is hope that the next 'improvement' doesn't annoy us too much.
I am a Bestbuy employee who volunteers on these boards on my own time. I am not paid for posting here, and you should understand that my opinions are exactly that - opinions. I do not represent Bestbuy in any way.

/Developer/Applications/Utilities/Java VisualVM.app fails to launch after updating to Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 11 (JRE 1.6.0_37). The application bundle in /usr/share/java/Tools depends on /System/Library/Java/Support/VisualVM.bundle, which is deleted by the update.
Workaround: download VisualVM.app here:

Christopher.   Klaus will come back, I'm sure.   But in case he doesn't it is generally only banks that you will need it for.   For some odd ball reason they think it is the height of security when with macs, it isn't.
Can I take it from your question that you needed to turn Java off?

As WZZZ and 71 say: you will know when you need it.
Java applets may be re-enabled by clicking the region labeled "Inactive plug-in" on a web page. If no applets have been run for an extended period of time, the Java web plug-in will deactivate.
seventy one - no, I only wanted to know if I should bother with this particular Software Update which has recently appeared.
Klaus - that is what worries me. If the Java web plug-in deactivates, does that mean it will not operate when I need it, i.e. banking websites?
WZZZ - thank you for that input, it answers how I will know when I need it.

• "Optimizing your Mac", continuing after last system update

Have now 10.9.4
The message has been there for a week, perhaps.Three external hard disks are busy all the time, 5 TB totally.
I did not dare to reboot, I waited to see what happened.
(Other people had the same problem after installing Maverick, last year. I searched)
I am unsure if the lots of files takes this much time to move or what it does.
Any advice?
/groundliner

I do not want to do like that.
I always do disk check after power failures. I'd like to know why I maybe not should just shut it down normally?
Also one person I read about here did not get it stopped by rebooting.
(Apple got me to pull out the power cord the other day, to get my WiFi working ok, that worked well)
I waited so long, because the disks hold very many files...
But thanks!

• Beep after system update...

Hi all...my G4 mac mini after a system update made a loud beep, and would not display video or turn on power to the keyboard...i tried restting nvram and pmu and nothing still. any help is appreciated...thanks!

Hi Vilem,
It sounds like you are experiencing a strange problem with regards to the system cache, either that - or your hard drive may be damaged. The chances of a hard drive failure are fairly low, especially if your system was working fine before the update, and therefore the problem is most likely to "software" based.
Here's what I suggest you try:
1) Un plug 'absolutely everything' from your mac mini - ensuring that no cables are plugged into any of the ports at the back - even the power!
2) Hold down the power button for 30 seconds and then plug in the power cord, whilst still holding down the power button. Ensure that the plug is in and switched on so that your mini has power.
3) Release the power button about 10 seconds after you have plugged in the power cable and then leave it to boot. If you hear the same sound then the problem is down to the hard drive and a call to Apple is your best bet.
4) If you didn't hear the loud beep - turn your mac mini back off and then connect only the keyboard - power it back up.
5) Repeat step 4 but instead, add your mouse to the back of the mac mini, not the back of the keyboard (you will be able to plug it into your keyboard later!)
6) Hopefully you will be able to successfully boot into OSX. Turn of your mac mini for the last time - plug your mouse into the back of your keyboard - power up and keep your right hand fingers-crossed =)
If all goes well, it is vital that you repair permissions in Disk Utility and maybe even download Onyx and run a "heavy" maintenance task to prevent anything like that from happening again.
Hope that I may have been of help!

im running mac os x V10.5.8 on my macbook pro.  Is there anyway i can update the operating system to os x lion?

If it's a Core Duo Mac, no.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, phone the online Apple Store and order a Mac OS X DVD, and if the computer can't run 10.8, a download code for 10.7.

Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

• How do i install mac os x v10.6 so I can update itunes for my iphone 5

So I have an older white macbook.  I am using mac os x v10.5.8.  I need to update my os version to 10.6 so I can install the newer version of itunes in order to plug my iphone 5 into itunes.  I can't seem to find the 10.6 download.  Please help.

To sync an iPhone 5 you need iTunes 10.7 or later.
To use iTunes 10.7 or later on a Mac, you must be running OS X 10.6.8 or later.
To upgrade from OS X 10.5.8, you must first buy Snow Leopard on DVD.
Snow Leopard is not available to download from any legitimate source.
Online (US): http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Online (UK): http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Elsewhere: call the phone number in the Apple Online Store
Apple's price is $19.99 or £14.00.
Make sure your system meets Snow Leopard's requirements:
Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" System Requirements
To install Snow Leopard for the first time, you must have a Mac with:
An Intel processor
An internal or external DVD drive, or DVD or CD Sharing
At least 1 GB of memory (RAM) (additional RAM is recommended)
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
At least 5 GB of disk space available, or 7 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools
After you install Snow Leopard you can decide if you want to upgrade OS X to the latest version, Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is available in the Mac App Store, which is available to you after upgrading to Snow Leopard.

Is there a way to update a Mac OS X v10.4.11 with processor of 2GHz Intel Core 2Duo and memory of 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM into v10.9.4?Thanks

You do realise that you can add Ram, if that is all that is holding you back it's not a problem.
Tell me the exact model and age of your Mac. (The model identifier can be found by holding the option key down and clicking on the Apple Menu, select System Information (top entry) and then read the model identifier from the righthand panel (2nd entry down)

• What is the next software update for my Mac OS X v10.5.8? What do i need to to do?

What is the next software update for my Mac OS X v10.5.8? What do i need to to do?

10.5.8 is the last free update available for your system. If you wish to upgrade to newer versions of Mac OS X, you will first need to purchase and install a copy of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard is back on the online Apple Store, at least in some countries. In the US:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
If it's not listed on the web site of the Apple Store in your country, call the online Apple Store, they may still have copies of Snow Leopard available.
Once you have upgraded to Snow Leopard, you then will have the option to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion, if you wish to do so and your system will support it.
Regards.

• I cannot perform security update with Mac OS X v10.411

I cannot perform security update with Mac OS X v10.411.  My Mac Book Pro is super behind concerning updates and security.

Yes, I too have that problem.  And, I have actually been hacked into, had all of my files, folders, photos, applications, sys pref, (in-other-words) EVERYTHING copied and recopied.   It has been a nightmare.  My identity was completely stolen.  What makes it worse is that when I told apple ~ I was told by 1 Apple Supervising Technician that I was out of my mind and that it wasn't possible.  He was very dismissive and treated me if I were some kind of idiot.  Well, check out below.  This is since Saturday or Sunday last.  I didn't authorize this and I sure as **** don' know who any of these people are.
I installed the 10.5 disk.  And I too, like many Macbook Pro users had the "Black Screen" bug.  So I had to go back to 10.4.  I went back and this is what I inherited.   I now rarely have control over the computer, never my printer and I my security has been and is constantly being compromised.  I believe that Apple needs to own up to this and, perhaps, do something about it?  Am I asking too much?

• HT3606 Mac OS X v10.5.8 Combined Update stalls updating my G4 1.25

Mac OS X v10.5.8 Update stalls updating my G4 1.25. A peek at the files being installed was reference to "standalone i386 efi" which has no place on a PPC. Are there different versions of the combined update? There are different sizes of the combined update.

Some general advice on updating Leopard:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.

To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

I recently did a system update and installed Yosemite on my Mac. Now I am unable to open CS5 at all. The error message I get is this: "To open Adobe Photoshop CS5.1, you need to install legacy Java SE 6 runtime." I have tried downloading this and it still gives me the same mess

In the details it is mentioned that it is an outdated version of Java.
Is this a security risk that i need to live with to get CS5 to run with Yosemite?
Also i need to reject messages from Java in the future about updates, or not?
thx for any input

• Mac OSX 10.4.8 Update Breaks Raid Striping -- System will no longer boot

Hi,
I'm a newbie from the PC world with a Mac Pro. For the last 8 hours I've been trying to get a Raid-0 configuration to work with no success.
The Raid array constructs ok and the system boots. Once that's done the Software Update screen arrives and I would select install all... then the machine would not boot. I get a Grey Shade like affect and the message to power off and restart. Powering off does nothing.
So I started again for the Nth time and added each Software Update individually. All loaded and rebooted successfully until the 10.4.8 Update.
As soon as that loads, installs and restarts the machine will not boot.
I called Apple's Tech Support and they told me they do NOT support RAID on this machine. I said what are you talking about. They put me on hold talked to a supervisor and came back with the same story. I just don't get it...
So anyone have any insight and advice on why the update breaks my Raid-0? What can I do to get over the problem (I'd like to have the RAID...)?
Thanks for the assistance.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, you needed an emergency boot drive anyway to repair your RAID boot drive. Just use the same one in addition to a working clone or backup of your regular system.
Apple made it easy to install or update security updates and system updates from an alternate drive (but you will have to use the stand-alone (combo preferably) updaters instead - which many use already as normal part of upgrades for years now (they seem more useful and reliable).
My preference is a dedicated boot drive with OS and apps and minimal home directory - no media files - and fast, like 10K Raptor. I use RAID for my home directory so it isn't on the boot drive for years to improve performance and keep the OS separate. Never a problem and nice mix.
