Mac OS X Vs. Windows Vista

Hello everyone. I just recently became a Mac user. So far I love it so much more then using a PC. I upgraded to a new Macbook from a Dell laptop. I just got so annoyed with all the problems and bugs I kept having with windows, and keeping up with the anti virus software that would cost me over a $100 a year to protect my computer. Not to mention having to restart it all the time when something new was installed.
I just saw a program all about windows vista. It looks like it runs like Mac OS X. With the same kind of graphics and programs. It also says it has built in virus software. Also it has gadgets instead of widgets, but they are basically the samething. I was wondering if anyone here has used windows vista and has experiance with Mac OS X. Is it almost the same as OS X, or still runs like windows and has the same issues that pcs can have?
Brandie

I've been using Vista (Business/Enterprise) for the past few months. Even with all of the improvements, Windows is still Windows. The built-in AntiVirus mentioned isn't really built in, it's $49/year which isn't bad for Microsoft native security solution. They've got a 90 day free trial on it so I'm checking it out
Overall - I think it's a bit early to truly judge the difference, since there are many apps that won't yet install on Vista due to it's infancy. It will be a few months before most app developers upgrade their installations to work seamlessly with Vista.
So, here I am still using my MacBook - get it?

  • Mac mini, boot camp, windows vista/windows 7, DVI to HDMI, no display

I have a mac mini from 2008 on which I have put windows Vista via boot camp. I have connected the mini using DVI to HDMI, to my Sony Bravia 1080p HDTV.
When I log into the mac 10.6.2, all seems fine and I can see the display alright.
When I log into Windows Vista, I cannot. The display stays black even though I hear the Windows startup sound.
I tried force-upgrading to Windows 7 and the same thing. In fact at some point I can see some of the stuff (like when starting in safe mode), but as soon as it boots up, the display goes blank.
Normally I can see the display up to the point where it says loading Microsoft windows (with the small progress bar) and then, nothing.
Any clues what may be happening?

  • Home Sharing Between Mac and PC with Windows Vista and Wireless Ethernet

    Hello.
I want to ask if anyone knows what is the problem.
I have Home Sharing Activated in my two computers and File Sharing Activated too.
My MacBook Pro has iTunes 10 and Snow Leopard all updated and my PC has Windows Vista and iTunes 10.
My MacBook Pro is connected to my network wirelessly and my PC is connected by the Ethernet Cable.
    Anyone can help?

since you don't describe the problem in detail, see if something here helps:
what you want to see in iTunes is this (view from my MBP's iTunes seeing the library on my Mini)
if you then click on the house icon, it will change to this and the shared library will load. at that point, two buttons will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes window, being settings and import
now you should be able to import any content from any shared library by selecting the content and clicking on import.
if the icon looks like this , home sharing has not been set up correctly.
in order for home sharing to work
    (a) iTunes on all machines must be authorized for the same iTunes store account
    (b) all machines must be on the same network
    (c) all machines must have access to the internet.
if none of the above makes a difference, try turning home sharing off on all computers, then turning it back on.
these reads will be useful: one and two.

  • Is mac bootcamp compatible with windows vista ?

hi, just wanted to know is it possible to install vista on mac ? because there is a software that only support windows XP or vista.

Boot Camp doesn't support setting that up in Mavericks. Use a product such as VirtualBox, Parallels Desktop, or VMware Fusion.

  • Iphone not being recognized by Itunes for MAC; But works in Windows Vista

    Hi,
My iphone sync with Windows without problems.
But when I plug my iPhone in MAC (10.5.5) with Itunes (8.0.2) the iTunes return: itunes could not connect to the iphone 0xE8000001
It is strange because iPhone connect with iPhoto without problems.
Just iTunes for mac dont work.
This is a brand new minimac.
    Any tips?
    Rogerio

    RogerioNT,
Which USB port are you connecting it to?
iPhoto will transfer over a USB 1.1 connection, and many hubs are USB 1.1. Try connecting the iPhone directly to the back of the computer.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Transferring music from Mac formatted Ipod to Windows Vista laptop

The hard-drive on my Mac laptop recently gave up on me. Unfortunately I haven't managed to transfer all my music to my time capsule and Apple TV. I've lost about 4,000 - 5,000 songs. I've read various articles and tried a few software applications, unfortunately none have work successfully for me.
I know there are some third party software applications that can sort this out but I was wondering is there any free applications or a manual way I can do it?
Thanks in advance for the advice!

There are several different ways to read HFS+ volumes on a pc. I used to have one but it was for reading .dmg on pc. I did find a program called HFSExplorer that might help you. If you can, I would transfer the music you have to your internal HDD on your Mac using a program like Senuti and then putting it on the iPods HDD using disk mode, then you should be able to read them on the pc usaing the aforementioned program.
    HFSExplorer:
    http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/hfsx.html
    Senuti:
    http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/
Senuti has a 30-day/1000 song trial. I'm not sure about the HFSExplorer.
    I hope this helps some!

  • Print Screen on Mac Book Pro running Windows Vista

How do I use the keyboard to capture a screen print? There is a way when in the Apple operating system, but I can't find one while I am in windows

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
on a MacBook keyboard there is no specific key for PrintScreen in Windows.
You can however use InputRemapper http://www.olofsson.info/index.html?inputremapper.html to remap the PrintScreen function to a key-combo (default in InputRemapper for this is fn+eject-key).

  • Connect to Mac from Windows Vista issue

Hi I want to view some files that are on my Mac from my PC (Windows Vista). Here's what I did so far: On my Mac I enabled file sharing, I selected the folders that I want to share.
Now here's the part that confuses me, it asks me to add the users to share the folder with. but do I enter the username and password for my mac or is it the username and password for my PC? What I did was add all the accounts that are on my mac.
I then went on my PC, clicked on network, I can see the mac computer, I can also see my username and folder, I click on it, I then see the drop box but when I click on it I get a network error message that says "Windows cannot access Users public folder drop box".
I don't know what setting I need to enable since I'm very new to this. I can access the files that are on my PC from my Mac just fine. but I can't access the files that are on my Mac from my PC. Do I need to create a new mac account?
I also noticed that when I click on the mac computer from my PC in Network, it doesn't ask me to enter a username and password, could that be the reason I can't connect? Please help.

The user names and passwords are the same on both systems. That is not the issue.
The issue is that each user can only connect to the mac from their windows system when they physically log on as user at the mac.
Otherwise it will not even show up in their network neighborhood.
If I boot up the mac and log in as the user, I can connect to the mac from my windows system but the other two users can't.
Likewise if one of them logs in as the user on the mac, I cannot connect to it from my windows system.

  • Share filing between Mac and  Windows Vista

    Hello,
I am trying to file share my iBook and Vista.
On my I book under Finder >>>Network>> I see my computer name "Computer-PC" but the icon is grayed out.
When I click on it it says:
The Alias "Computer-PC" Could not opened, because the original item cannot be found. Then it gives me 3 choices
Delete Alias, Fix Alias , OK
I hit OK it does nothing
I hit Fix Alias, Then it ask me to choose an item to open. I dont know what to open????
I do not want to Delete Alias.
Also I tried to connect Vista and it does see the IBook on the network, but then when I try to connect It asks for the user name and password of my iBook
I verified this by reading the support docs on the Apple website.
System Preference >>>Systems >>>Accounts >> verified and changed password.
Still no luck. Can someone give me some advice? Thanks!!

There are more than a few threads on the topic across the web; so I guess a search
would be in order and some sorting of results to enable a wise choice from them.
There's also the Apple Help built into OS X and some ideas present themselves.
Firewall changes would probably be necessary, and the Sharing (system preference)
panel has some access settings for some of this sort of thing.
(The closest I have been to sharing between a Windows machine and a Mac, is when
I let a few Windows machines mistakenly given to me to troubleshoot & repair, were
brought into my space and they temporarily shared a workbench. I found out what
was wrong with them (outside of the poor quality & shabby OS) -- and out they went!)

Hyperlink to files work ok on my mac but not on windows vista, they open but you can't read them properly. These are both files that have been saved as Word docs. I tried firstly to save as 'pages' but that didn't work so I tried the word docs. Sorry if this has been covered somewhere else, I couldn't find it!

  • Did windows vista kill my ipod?

I recently bought a new computer with windows vista (which I hate, should have gone with the mac). my ipod has been working fine for a very long time now. when I downloaded the newest version of itunes to my new computer and tried to sync my ipod, the ipod froze up and I havnt been able to get the thing working since. I have rebooted, restored, and everything countless times. I decided to go back to my old computer becasue I never had problems with the ipod in the past. I tried all the same things with my old computer numerous times and still nothing. the ipod is on but completly frozen and everytime I reboot or restore the same outcome. the only time that my ipod is not frozen is when it is in diskmode and I have tried rebooting reinstalling numerous times from this mode and still nothing. I realize that there is a new article on the mac website saying that windows vista can currupt your ipod, but this was put on the website after I had apparently killed my ipod. I miss my ipod, can anyone help me????

I have had the same problem- I recently bought a new Windows Vista laptop and plugged in a new Ipod cLASSIC (80gb). It charged up fine and seemed to working, but when I tried to transfer songs onto it and ejected it from the computer, the Ipod just died. It will not turn off or on, cannot be reset and will not charge either on the computer (I've tried it on various computers)or via the mains charger I have. I took it back to the shop, assuming it was a dodgy Ipod and they replaced it. I am now on my 4th new Ipod and the same thing has happened to all of them (each time I plug them in they just stop working). The guys in the Apple Shop (where I took my laptop and Ipod to checked out) can't work out what is going wrong but seem to think it is my laptop. They did not mention anything about Windows Vista not being compatible with Ipods, so I'm not sure what to do for the best. I am currently using my old laptop wich is Windows XP but am considering investing in a new Apple Mac laptop!!

  • Moving Library - Permission Error (Windows Vista)

I'm trying to move my iTunes media to an external hard drive, but I keep getting a Permission error when I try to consolidate my library. I've searched for ways to fix the permissions, but the only answers I've found are for Mac and I have Windows Vista.
Here's what I did on iTunes:
    Edit>Preferences>Advanced
I clicked "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library"
Then next to "iTunes Media Folder Location" I hit Change and selected my external hard drive F: and the folder within it titled "iTunes Media Folder 2" and hit OK.
    Then I hit:
    File>Library>Organize Library>Consolidate Files
But then I receive this permissions error message:
"Copying failed because you don't have permission to change your iTunes Media Folder or a folder within it."
I tried going into my Music folder (not on iTunes, on my actual computer) to try and see what's wrong:
    Start>Music>(Right click) iTunes folder>Properties>Security
And I have full control to edit/read/write, etc. so I have no idea what's going on.
    Help, please?

    To be more specific,
all the security type on bin directory property - on control, read, write, all have been granted.
I click on the bin directory, it is showing read only, then I uncheck it, and click apply to all subdirectories and confirm.
Then I check the bin directory property again, it is still showing read only.
    thanks again

  • Windows Vista Machine Can No Longer Connect to Mac Following Upgrade

Before: Windows Vista machine with 6 drive letters mapped to the 6 hard drives in my Mac Pro running 10.5.8.
After: Mac Pro upgraded to 10.6. Now the Vista machine cannot connect to any of the drive letters, nor can it open the Mac Pro by browsing -- the Mac Pro shows up, but cannot be opened. A second Windows machine also cannot open any shares on the Mac Pro.
I have checked all of the settings in Network on the Mac Pro and they look fine. Does anyone have any ideas for things to check?

I was able to see the other Windows XP computer and begin to connect. I was then presented with a login screen. I tried using the usual user name and password - no luck. I then formatted the user name as as follows:
    user name: computer name\user name
    password: as normal
And it worked. Specifically in my case:
    user: cwy-pln2152\administrator
    password: planning
This is what worked for me your mileage may vary.

I have just installed Windows vista onto my Mac but when using boot camp it only gives me the option of creating a Windows 7 install disk.  Does anybody know where I can get a Windows Vista install disk?  Thanks

How do I share files from Windows Vista to a Mac with Lion OSX?  I'm having SO much trouble with this!  Any help would be appreciated!!!

In a finder window, under 'shared' you should be able to see the windows computer name, click on it and connect to it. I am assuming here you have sharing turned on and permissions granted on the windows computer.
Will add a note though, I have frequently accessed files from a PC on the LAN using XP, not vista.
