Mac OS X, windows and FreeNAS sharing folders

I just setup FreeNAS. I want to have all our documents and pictures to reside on that. This way I wont have two different copies of any certain file. It is relatively easy to have the 'My Documents' folder from my windows notebook point to the Network drive. However, I have not been able to figure out how to do this in Mac. Note- I do not want to move my entire home folder to the network, just - Documents and pictures.

Copy the /Home/Documents/ folder to the NAS drive. That drive needs to support AFP or you may run into filename problems and/or other file related problems due to filesystem differences.
Once the folder has been moved to the NAS select the folder on the NAS and CTRL- or RIGHT-click. Select Make Alias from the drop down menu. You should now have an alias named "Documents alias." On the Mac put the /Home/Documents/ folder in the Trash but don't delete it. Copy the alias file from the NAS to the /Home/ folder. Rename it to simply "Documents." Double-click on it to be sure it opens the folder on the NAS. If so you can empty the Trash. You're done.

  • Other Macs Can't Connect To My Shared Folders...

I have 3 macbook pros in my house, all running 10.5.4 Leopard, and only one has this problem and I don't know why:
The other 2 computers can see my computer under "Shared" in the Finder, and clicking on it connects the computers successfully as "guests", but they can't see any of my shared folders. It is just empty. I am sharing my Public folder, and I have tried sharing other folders as well, but nothing will show up no matter what I try.
I can see the shared files on other computers fine, but no one can see my computers shared folders even though they can connect to my computer.
    Thanks for any help...

Yes... I should add I have file sharing turned on with both AFP and SMB enabled. I also have the Firewall set to allow all incoming connections.
When the other computer connects to mine, in sharing settings, it shows one connected user connected, but that user can't see any folders on the computer no matter what I share.

  • Samba sharing and default shared folders

    Dear All,
i'm a Mac newvie (own a MBA 11" 2013) and i'm facing a very - hopefully - ridicolous issue during folder sharing by using Samba protocol.
Following the widely avaialble instructions on how to enable folder sharing on my mac (OSX 10.8.5) by accessing System Prefs --> Sharing and then enabling the protocol, the users and adding the folder i've ended up in something like the image represented below
where it's clear that only VMs_HDD is actually shared. (this is also confirmed by having a look insde the dscl service under Local/Default/SharePoints)
The issue comes when I explore the the shared resource let say from my PC where i discover that beside the shared folder VMs_HDD are also shared by default all the mounted drives as well as the user folder (check image below)
How could i fix this issue by removing those default shared resources? In case it's not possible on 10.8.5, is it fixed in 10.9?
Thanks in advance for any suggestion!
    BR, Riccardo

I've fixed the topic and ended up to solve the question. Basically i've learned that:
The SMB implementation in MacOS by default shares the user's home folder once the user is listed as one of those enabled to perform SAMBA sharing
If the enabled user has also administrative rights, beside the user's home folder, all the OS mounted drives are also shared by default.
The two points above give reason to the sharings i see in Windows where beside the VMs_HDD folder also the drives and the user's home folder is shared.
Then answering my initial post if you don't want to share all the mounted drives removed the administrative rights to the sharing user. Concerning the user's home folder sharing i think i can live with it.
    Best regards, Riccardo

  • Recommended Partitioing for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux

I have a Mac Pro with three 500 GB Hard Drives. I would like to put Mac OS X on one, Windows on another and Linux on the third Drive.
I also would lik to share data between them. I understand that Windows cannot read or write to HFS+. But Linux can read and write to HFS (non journaled). The only common disk format that all OS's can read is FAT32.
For partitioning I am thinking of the following:
    Disk 1 -- Three Partitions
Partition 1 - Hidden EFI (size ?? and type??)
    Partition 2 - HFS+ for Mac OSX (200 GB)
Partition 3 - HFS+ for Data (190 GB or so)
    Disk 2 - Four Partitions
Partition 1 - NTFS for Sawp (4 GB)
Partition 2 - NTFS for Windows (200 GB)
Partition 3 - NTFS for Data (200 GB)
Partition 4 - FAT 32 for Shared Data (90 GB or so)
(P.S. I will have to use a special formatting program since windows only allows you to format FAT32 up to 32 GB or so).
    Disk 3 - Three Partitions
    Partition 1 - Linux Swap (4 GB)
    Partition 2 - / root (200 GB)
Partition 3 - Home (290 GB or so)
    Will this partitioning scheme work?
How big should the hidden EFI partition be and what is its type? HFS+?
    Rob

No need to use special software for formating windows drive. You can do it in Apple Disk Utilities application.
In Disk Utilities, select drive then partition. Select options and set as Master Boot Record (MBR). Set your partitions to the size you want. Set the format to MS-DOS File System for each partition. This will make them all FAT32. Erase each so that they have the FAT32 format.
When you install Windows, you can then format the one with Windows XP OS to NTFS. After XP is installed you can then convert the other 2 partitions to NTFS.
You now will have 3 NTFS partitions and 1 large FAT32 partition.
I did it this way but only 1 NTFS and 1 FAT32 partition and also on PATA drive in optical bay.

  • 4GB Flash Drive not loading on Mac (but on Windows and Ubuntu)

    Hello,
I have a 4GB flash drive (probably from LG) that I bought about 3 years ago. It was working just fine all this time but now, all of a sudden, it's gone. Not working, showing up neither in Finder nor in Disk Utility. But it works just fine on Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Files are even readable there. I tried re-formatting it on Ubuntu in FAT-32 but it still won't show up on a Mac.
Any other flash drive is showing up on my computer (tested with 2 different ones).
    Any clue?

I don't claim to know the solution to your problem, but in your situation I would try either or both administrator install methods: 1) Right-click the downloaded install file, choose "Run as Administrator" and install the software as usual. 2) Try using a different Windows account that you are positively certain has full administrator rights or the actual Administrator login name, install with that account.
Also, make sure you empty the browser cache before retrying the http pages. What about other browser settings, like security or privacy settings? Any add-ons or antivirus browser helper objects?
Do you only use Internet Explorer, or is this issue the same in Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Safari?
Good luck, hope you get the error fixed.

  • Mac opening in Windows and not mac

My mac wants to open in Windows Vista basic whenever it is started up. I believe that it is boot camp which opens up windows vista each time. However in the bootcamp settings in windows vista when I try to change it back to mac OSX it reboots in vista again. Any suggestions please.

Hi....try holding down the 'Option' key at startup, that will get you to the startup selection window...choose the Mac OS to start from...once booted into OSX go to System Preferences and then the Startup Disk and click on your Mac HD to reselect it as the startup disk....

  • Accessing windows server shared folders via IOS devices.

FileExplorer did it! Thanks a bunch.

Looking for suggestions on what route I should go in order to establish connections from IOS devices w/ VPN to windows server 2008 shared folders. Mostly just for employees to upload  files to, downloading isn't a big deal. I'm sure there's apps out there that'll achieve this goal so if I'm correct I'm looking for recommendations! Or if there's a better way entirely.
    Thanks friends.

  • Backup and Sync Network Folders

Hello - I have a simple question that I am hopeful someone can help me out with.  We have a shared network folder that is approximately 750 GB in over 50,000 folders and we need to back this up to a hosted cloud drive.  Does anyone have any suggestions
for the easiest way to synchronize and backup our local network data with a hosted solution?  We have numerous employees accessing the data remotely, so real-time data synchronization is preferred.  Please help!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Windows Server Backup only supports backing up to external and internal disks, optical and removable media such as DVDs, and remote shared folders.
The simplest way is to use OneDrive. OneDrive (formerly called SkyDrive) is free cloud storage that comes with your Microsoft account. It’s like an extra hard drive that’s available from any of the devices you use,
so the files you save there are always with you.
    Using OneDrive on Surface

You could also use Windows Azure Online Backup. Windows Azure Online Backup is a cloud-based backup solution enabling server data to be backed up and recovered from the cloud in order to help protect against loss
    and corruption.

  • New iPod running Mac - I run Windows (how can I convert)

I have just got a new (secondhand for a mate) iPod Classic and it has arrived already loaded with music and TBH I would like to keep it (over 5000 tracks) but the problems is when I plug it into my iTunes account it wants to clear all the music, it is set in a Mac format and I'm running my account through Windows.
question is "Can I convert all the music from a Mac format into Windows and not lose all the music?
    Cheers

    Hello Rochey30,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Not without the help of some third party software such as XPlay or Macdrive. These both come at a cost.
    Otherwise, no. Sorry.

  • Why are windows and desktop on iMac acting wonky?

t's raining out and that may or may not have something to do with the fact that for the first time (after 20 years of owning a Mac), the Document window and Mail window (both which were open at the same time) were doing a jig, moving too the right a little ways, then back again. It made it impossible to delete or move emails. The windows did this completely on their own. This is quite disconcerting.
And, on the same subject, perhaps, for the last few weeks, at times my mouse (corded) is acting as if I'm clicking on the left-hand side so all open windows become small and I have to click on a window to continue working on my document. It does this on its own without me necessarily using the mouse.
And last, but not least, earlier this morning I went to turn off the computer and was about to click on the dialogue box that asks if I want to turn off the computer now or wait 58 seconds, when the desktop turned black, then back to normal, then black and it didn't allow me to click on the blue box. This black and normal switch went on for a minute or two, then the computer turned itself off.

I can't open them without buying software when the same emails on my iPhone have the attachment as a PDF and open?  Thanks
Acrobat PDF files open with Preview which is already installed on the Mac.

  • Problem connecting to shared folders on Mac from Windows PCs

I am having problems using windows file sharing SMB to share folders on my Mac with windows computers on the same network. I have added a folder in 'Sharing' in System Preferences, and added a user account with SMB set to 'on', but none of the windows computers in the network seem to be able to access the address that is stated.
I can access shared folders on the windows computers from my my Mac with no problems.
    Can anyone offer any advice.

I got it to work. Instead of using share\username I instead used share\short name and it connected. However, it is not very obvious from the account preferences panel how to see or modify the short name. I just read that you have to right-click the account name in the account preferences panel in order to see this. I'll give it a try soon.

  • ITunes 9 - Using 'Home Sharing' between Windows and Mac libraries

I have my main iTunes music library stored on my Windows 7 PC. It is currently around 200Gb in size, so pretty large.
I want to be able to use 'Home Sharing' in iTunes 9 to access this library on my Macbook over my home wireless network.
I don't, however, want to copy the music files themselves over to this laptop, but simply access the library over the network, and play them via either iTunes 9 or Front Row.
I would appear that the Windows and Mac 'iTunes Library' xml files are incompatible. I can't 'Alias' the Windows library on the MacBook for this reason. Does 'Home Sharing' eliminate this problem? Is there a way of accessing the library on the Windows PC without copying all of the files over to the MacBook?
I want to maintain a single library (which is often changing with new podcasts etc), rather than 2 libraries which I have to keep in sync.
Does anybody have any ideas on this one? I'm sure I am not alone in having this problem.
    Here's hoping...:)
