MAC OS X10.5.8 taking over 10 hours to install??

Hi
I received an ipod touch as a gift yesterday and when i connected learned i needed to update from 10.5.5 to 10.5.8. I went through the system update and it asked me to restart so i pressed restart. It took me to the purple screen with the status bar that said Installing 1 item and underneath it said Configuring INstallation. the bar barely moved over a 10 hour period so i stopped it.
is this normal to take that long?? seems a bit of drag that i cant even use my new toy until i get this resolved.
Should i just go out and buy 10.6?? instead of going through all this??
Any input would be great.

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Does your Mac still run? What OS version does it report in Apple menu -> About This Mac?
If it still reports OS X 10.5.5, I'd download and install the OS X 10.5.8 "combo" updater:

That might be a good idea if you're nervous about the state of your Mac. But before you do that, I'd use Disk Utility to do "verify disk" and "repair permissions" operations.

  • Why is installing 3 applications from a creative cloud packager taking over an hour?

    Dear Adobe community,
I am trying to install 3 Creative Cloud applications, (Illustrator, photoshop, and indesign) on a Windows 7 Hpz420 workstation from a USB hard drive and it is taking over an hour to complete.  i created a package of the 3 applications using the CC packager and move the package over to a USB drive.  Then I start the installer exe it runs and completes, but the installation takes over an hour and 1/2.  My installation of Creative Suite 5.5 from a similar USB hard drive was much quicker, about 1/2 hour.
I don't want to use a remote installer like AAMEE. Is there a different way to create a package that is more efficient? I also don't want to redown the applications everytime I need to install them on a machine and utilize my network bandwidth.
Is this normal ?  I have rebuilt the package with the same results and have installed CC on two different machines with the same results.  I did not see anything in the forums about the installation being so slow so I am concern that I have missed something or that my results are not normal.
    Your help is appreciated.
    Mike

My "Gaming" computer (Toshiba Qosmio X-70A, w/ 32GB RAM, i7 Intel processors @2.7 Ghz, w/ 250GB SSD, 750GB high-speed 7,200 RPM primary & 1TB SSD/HD hybrid drive) was purchase specifically, by me, to learn & use the Adobe "Cloud" Apps with.  This computer is a beast. <And - yet> it takes me days, literally <DAYs> to download all the apps I am using/studying.
I (last week) recently had my 1st "total meltdown" w/ Win 8.1-Pro (what a total P.O.S. "OS" this is!) & have faced the daunting task of re-installing ALL of the Adobe SW available over the "Creative Cloud". This will take days (w/ a direct DSL link to a Cat-6 cable; not on Wi-Fi) to "re-install" all the "Creative Cloud" software I was learning/working with. Insane. I have never seen anything like this!
So, "DLi" - I agree! Adobe's SW (& HW) Engineers don't give a stuff about your time nor mine.
The only things that are of importance to them are (#1 - "Keeping their jobs") ... metering out their "Creative Cloud" in a manner which allows them to investigate EVERY byte on your computer/server/device BEFORE allowing you to use it . . . (hmmm....I do wonder how many dollars per month that information is worth to the NSA / per seat)?) ... and making it "a nightmare" for the user.
    What an insult!
What an horrific slap in the face to each & every one of Adobe's "Creative Cloud" paying customers! (Uhhhm, that'd be you and that'd be me, too).

  • MY IPOD U2 EDITION IS TAKING OVER 24 HOURS TO REFORMAT FOR MY PC

Please help me, i dont exactly have the greatest computer because i loaded it up with stuff... but with my shuffle i didt have any problems... i just recently got the U2 Edition, and i as just wondering is it supposed to take over 24 hours for my pc to reformat and reboot the ipod??? Thats what its doing, so if any one can answer me, i have a feeling it has to do with my pc, but if theres anything i can do to make this thing go faster!!!PLEASEEEE ANSWER!!!!

All i did was uninstall my ipod shuffle itunes *it said i had to* and i reinstalled the software that came with the U2 version, and it said that my ipod had to be formatted, so i thought it would take a couple of hours, but its definatly taking days. Is tehre anything I can do!??As for the ipod updater that i could install, it was saying that that it couldn't do it with the shuffles i tunes, so i delted everything ih ad for the shuffle ( i sold it anyways) so i figured starting from scratch would work!?

  • Illustrator taking over an hour to save a file

Having some trouble saving files with illustrator. Recently all of my files have been taking a long time to save on both my computers (one of which is brand new), but there's one file in particular that is currently saving and has been trying to save for an hour. It isn't non-responsive, I've tried a couple of other times and canceled it because it was just taking too long and I wanted to try and shrink the file size again to see if I could get it to save faster. I've done everything to shrink the file size down, there isn't any complex vector art, one or two large photos, but I've saved files with the exact same image and it didn't take half this long. The file itself is a little over 400 mb (Though it hasn't been saved since I shrunk everything so it should be much smaller than that). I am not exaggerating it has literally been over an hour and the save bar is barely a fourth of the way orange.

Try to quit all adobe application and delete the preference as per below path.

  • IPod taking over 5 hours to sync

I have just got my iPod touch. It's not new I got int of eBay so it's been used before. I have synced it twice before and took 3-4 mins but this time its taking aproxitmly over 5 hours. It's still on step to backing up. I have read an other article about this and the response was to sync more but how could If I just got this two days ago.
I hope you can shed some light on this for me.

I would try removing and reinstalling all the Apple software by:

  • Why is my transcoding  taking  over 24 hours  to  share?

I am trying to export  a movie  I  made  in FCPX  that i s  an hour and 45 mins  long and the sharing  is taking  well over 24 hours  and it's currently  only at 42%.   Am  I doing someting  wrong?  If I get compressor  will that  make it faster?

I just saw ealry  tonight  it was at around 45%  and then  not too much longer after that  I  was finally done!!  Awesome,  I thought  it was gonna  be much longer.  Now  off to  create the dvd.  I use  idvd  currently.

  • My purchased movies are taking over an hour to load.  Why?

Apple TV is telling me (suddenly) that my purchased movies will take over an hour to load and play.  This literally started happening 10 minutes into a movie.  It's never taken more than 10 seconds to load in the past.  My internet connection is up and working normally.  Why would this start happening so suddenly?

Power cycle the ATV and router then try again.

  • Synching contacts, other items on Info tab now taking over an hour!

This started with the itunes update that brought MobileMe support. Synching contacts and other items on the Info tab before this version of iTunes would take seconds- probably quite a bit less than a minute to synch everything on the Info tab. Now, my Contacts (synching with Outlook) take about 45 minutes to synch, and everything on the Info tab combined takes a little over an hour. And this data almost never changes. I have only around eighty contacts, which haven't changed in months, only one scheduled event, etc. Over an hour??? I can import my whole contact list into Google contacts in less than 5 seconds. This happens on a 1st gen iphone and two different 3g iPhones, and I even tried reinstalling iTunes and making sure Outlook was auto-archiving. What next? I now have to basically skip synching anything on the Info tab. Is this just underhanded MobileMe marketing? Anyone else experience this?

OK I've got this one resolved. the solution was in the sticky in this section about resolving syncing problems with Contacts under Windows. It suggested to go to Edit -> Preferences -> Syncing, and click the "Reset Sync History" button. Now the problem they described this being the solution for is not the problem I was having- all my syncs were accurate, as far as I know; but I don't care at this point- it worked, so I'm happy. If you are spending several minutes syncing Contacts, try the above.

  • Why is it taking over 20 hours to download IOS 8

I have been trying to download IOS8 on my 4S for a few days.
My IMac is connected to an ethernet connection with FIOS
and it states that the download will take over 20 hours, yet after
a while it quits and states it timed out.

Hi Stevo, in compressor.app , go and SET "FRAME CONTROLS" to OFF in the Compressor Inspector for that job (see the gear wheel) Resubmit and see if there is a major reduction in the service time for THAT job.
Good chance thats causing ya issue Just trawl the forums and you will see. I noticed when Compressor 4 was available that some but not all of the Apple Seettings had FRAME CONTROLS set to ON.
post your experiences for others to see.

  • Ipod touch 4g backup taking over 48 hours, does this happen?

I've been trying to update to ios5 but the backup for the update has taken over 48 hours. Can this happen, i just think it's because i haven't backed up in like months.

Far away not even close to being half way full. I have tried everything to fix my last one and ended up replacing it and the replacement is even worse. I feel like if it was the IOS it would be more consistent and be the same. Perhaps I somehow got two bad ones in a row and should try again? My first one hadno problem with the keyboard or Safari but this one does immensely.

  • Why is Mountain Lion taking over an hour to download?

I've purchased the Mountain Lion update, but it's taken over an hour to load only 1 dot.  Is there something I should be doing?

    Liz187 wrote:
I'm replying to my own question to point out my connection is through TimeWarner Cable; normally everything runs fast.
It's worth noting that because Mountain Lion is 4 gigabytes, it's probably many times larger than anything else you usually download. And how fast something downloads is affected by your service level. When downloading most web pages and movies, most people would not notice the difference between, say, a 3 gigabit per second service and a 20 megabit per second service. I, for example, have a 12 megabit connection and that usually means most files seem about equally fast, but a massive system installer like Mountain Lion usually takes most of an hour to download due to its sheer size. I realize I could cut the time down if I paid more per month for a 20 megabit connection or faster, but since it's only occasional that I download something this big I don't want to pay more.
The speed of cable like Time Warner can be (I hear) variable depending on things like how many people are online in the neighborhood. My 12Mb DSL connection is just about always running at its rated speed, but a lot of areas can't get DSL faster than 3Mb or so. In other words there are a lot of reasons why a download as large as an OS X system installer might be slow.
One important thing that can help: Make sure you have minimized the downloading or uploading of anything else on your computer or any other device in the house. For instance, if your spouse is watching a movie on Netflix, your kid is downloading music, and your own computer is uploading an automatic backup to Carbonite or Backblaze, your download won't be able to use the full bandwidth of your connection.
