Mac OS9 Classic

I recently upgraded to MAC OS X 10.4.6. Since the upgrade i haven't been able to open up Outlook Express to view my email. I get the message MAC OS 9 Classic cannot find a System Folder on your startup disk to use. It says about re-loading MAC OS 9.1 or greater. Not sure what to do and what CD to use. Thanks, Mike B.

I think the real question here is, why are you using Outlook Express for OS 9 when you could be using the excellent Mail application that comes with OS X?
But let's get back to your question. I am interested to know what you upgraded to 10.4.6 FROM. Did you install OS X directly over OS 9, or was OS X already on there and you just ran the Software Update function? If you just ran Software Update, that shouldn't have done anything to your Classic (OS 9) installation.
If your OS X install is a brand new install, were you previously using OS 9? If so, was it 9.2.2? It has to be 9.2.2 to be run in Classic mode under OS X. Try this: open System Preferences and select Startup Disk. Give it a moment to refresh, and see if one of the startup options is OS 9. If so, then the system folder is still available and just needs to be updated. If not, then it got moved or deleted somehow.
Be sure to respond with what you found out; I may have more ideas for you.

  • Mac OS9 Classic Install Problems

Could anyone help me out here. I have a new iMac G4 OS 10.2.8
Went to install Photoshop - no luck as I need OS9 Classic - got the OS9 install disk - double click on the installer icon - get a message:
There are no localized Classic-specific resources to update the selected system folder, Power Mac G4 InstalléSystem Folder.
Donèt know what t do here - any replies would be appreciated.

You might want to check out this link below - Since I'm unclear as your system set-up, perhaps this will help. It sounds as though what you need to do is just install the 'classic environment' but you are going at it asthough you are trying to actually install OS9.

If your drive is partitioned you could use the plain old OS9 install disks on one of your partitions - Until you are ready to bail on OS9 totally I vote for installing the 'classic environment' on your main drive, thus taking full advantage of Apple's unique OS interface.

  • Using Tiger and Mac OS9 (Classic)

I just got an old Powerbook G4 off eBay so I can run Classic. I miss Bugdom so much!!
Problem is it has no OS installed, so I installed my old copy of Tiger on it and updated to 10.4.11.
How can I install OS 9 on it? I have CDs of 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2.1 but it won't start from any of them. I read somewhere that the older Powerbooks will only start up from the original restore CDs that were supplied with them, and needless to say I do not have them.
I am not certain of the exact vintage and model, but it is a G4, 1GHz, 64Mb Video RAM 15" display with gigabit ethernet.
If anyone can offer some advice I would be very grateful.

All I have is a CD with 9.2.2 on as a barebones system with various utilities. I tried the drag and drop method but it didn't work well enough to run much. It started OK, but it would allow me to run ant 3rd party programs I tried, including Bugdom and Tome Viewer. Unfortunately I don't have another non-Intel Mac.

  • Mac os9 classic desktop will not start

the bar is stuck and it does not move

There are a nearly infinite possiblities here.
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
          Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
          a) verify the disk
          b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile Wait awhile while you harddrive
           is being checked.

  • I don't need Mac os9

I do not need Mac OS9 Classic so can I just erase everything and start fresh with Mac OS 10.3.9? I have the installation discs for that program and that is what system is running now.

You can just drag the OS 9 system files in a folder called "System Folder" to the Trash & after you empty the trash, it will be gone. You don't have to erase the HD and reinstall 10.3.x. OS 9 doesn take much space on your HD, so may users just leave it even though they rarely/never use it.
You can do the same (drag to Trash) with any OS 9 applications you have installed.

  • How to Uninstall OS9 Classic

I am now ready to remove OS9 Classic from my PowerBook G4 Laptop and my QuickSilver 867 (I need the space and have been OS9-free for well over a year).
So what is the 12-step process to unistalling OS9 (I don't imagine I can simply move the OS9 System folder to the trash).
Obviously both machines run the latest version of OSX, as both operating systems came installed on each machine.
    PowerBook G4/QuickSilver 867   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi, Scott -
As Allan said, all that should be necessary is to drag the OS 9 System Folder into the Trash and empty the Trash.
If OSX's Finder protests about doing that, then drag the file Finder out of the OS 9 System Folder and onto the desktop. It should then be possible to throw away the OS 9 System Folder, followed by throwing away the file Finder. A restart may be necessary between dragging the file Finder out, and throwing the System Folder away.
Note - be sure you throw away the folder named System Folder, and not the folder named System (that's OSX).
There are two other folders that can then be thrown away - the ones named "Applications (Mac OS 9)" and "Documents" that OS 9 uses.
Be sure there is nothing in either that you need before doing so.

  • INCOMPLETE Mac OS9 uninstall?

I have thoroughly trashed Mac OS9 as instructed and yet, at startup (on Mac OS 10.4.8), I still have an alert window that says (in French, as I have a French system):
"The Mac OS9 system folder you have selected presents a problem. Chose another system folder").
There's a button that says "Open Classic Preferences".
I have not selected the trashed system naturally...When I click on that button, the window goes away and Mac OS X runs fine.
How can I fix this so I don't get that annoying alert?

Hi, Laurent. Did you, by any chance, search your hard drive for all files that had "Classic" in their names, and trash them all? If so, that would have disposed of your Classic.prefpane file, which normally resides in System > Library > PreferencePanes, and will open to the Classic preference window if you double-click it. If that file is gone, obviously you can't do so, nor will you have access to the Classic pane any other way.
I don't know whether or not it's possible to reinstall just that PreferencePane from your Tiger installer disc using Pacifist, or whether there are also other files you'd have to reinstall in order to make that one usable again — and if so, what they are. The best place to ask those questions would probably be in the Tiger Installation and Setup forum, or perhaps in the much-less-frequented Classic forum.

  • Mac os9 and swing

I am having problems running a java swing applet on mac os9. I have compiled the applet using jdk 1.3 and it just doesn't work. How do you setup java swing for mac browsers has anyone done this successfully.

    Welcome to the discussions!
In order to help with installing Classic, we need a bit more information. There are plenty of documents that explain how to use the Software Restore disks that came with your computer. Unfortunately, there are many possible configurations of the Restore disks which makes it more difficult to pin down a solution. Pay close attention to the number of Restore disks that you have and which version of OS X your computer shipped with. Perhaps this document pertains to your situation: <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301468>.

  • Uninstall os9 classic

Will uninstalling os9 classic from Tiger cause fragmentation problems? I was told this by an Apple technician, who recommended I not uninstall it unless I need space on the hard drive (which I don't). Am I better off just leaving it alone until I replace everything with Leopard when it comes out? If I uninstall it, how to I correct any fragmentation that may result?

Will uninstalling os9 classic from Tiger cause
    fragmentation problems?
not unless you are very short on disk space.
I was told this by an Apple
technician, who recommended I not uninstall it unless
I need space on the hard drive (which I don't).
I'd leave Classic alone because it simply doesn't take up much space, and why remove it unless I know for absolute certain that I'll never use a Classic app again?
    Am I
better off just leaving it alone until I replace
everything with Leopard when it comes out?
Why 'replace everything' even then? The simplest upgrades are an update upgrade, in which the old version of OS X is updated by the new version, and an archive update, in which the old versions of OS X is placed in a newly generated Previous Systems folder and an all-new System is placed on your hard drive. I've done update upgrades on my personal Macs without problems since OS X 10.1.x. I've done update upgrades on other Macs, at the office and elsewhere, with only minor problems except in a few cases, since the same time. All of the minor problems were easily fixed. The more serious problems were because the Mac in question either had certain 3rd-party haxies loaded and the user didn't tell me, or there were serious directory problems, or both. Fixes were straight-forward, if time-consuming. And since then, I simply check out the volume beforehand to avoid those problems.
    If I
uninstall it, how to I correct any fragmentation that
    may result?
    Why bother?

  • CD Games That Need OS9 Classic

When we load a CD game, it says that Classic cannot find MAC OS9 System Folder. I have 10.3.8. I can find the Classic folder but it is empty. Every time my granddaughter want to play on the computer we get disappointed.
How do I get access to OS9 so Abby can enjoy the games we bought for her?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    Hi midwest mama,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
You can reinstall OS 9 from the install disks that came with your computer. Depending on what version they are there are different procedure:
Using Apple Software Restore to install or reinstall parts without erasing (Mac OS X 10.1.5 or earlier)
Using Restore Discs with Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.3
Mac OS X 10.4: Restoring applications from a Mac OS X 10.2 Software Restore disc
Using Restore discs with computers that ship with Mac OS X 10.3.4 through 10.3.7
Using Restore discs with computers that ship with Mac OS X 10.3.7 or later

  • Accessing The Chooser In Os9 Classic

How does one access the chooser to change the printers in os9 classic from
panther? (assuming the computer is NOT dual bootable in 9)
basically I want to be able to switch from 2 different OS9 printers

You could make an alias to the Chooser, or just access the Chooser in the Apple menu when your OS 9 application is running.

  • ICC profile no longer installed so Photoshop (OS9 Classic ) won't print

    Hello everyone
What is an ICC profile? If I run my non latest Photoshop in the OS9 Classic environment on OS10 a message comes up that the ICC profile is no longer installed so it cannot print - what can I do?
    Bryony

An ICC profile is a mathematical snapshot of the color range and gamut of a given device. There are separate profiles for monitors, digital cameras, scanners, printers, etc. With this information, ColorSync knows what each device is capable of displaying, capturing or printing. As an example, it can then give you the closest color possible on your printer to match your monitor.
With Photoshop open, press CommandShiftK to call up the Color Settings. Under the Working Spaces section, see what profiles Photoshop is looking for under the RGB and CMYK fields. You should then find that profile in the OS 9 /System Folder/ColorSync/ folder. Actually, it doesn't mean it's there, but that's the one Photoshop is looking for.
You could choose a different profile. Or, you could reinstall Photoshop entirely, or do a custom install and have it only reinstall the ICC profiles.

  • Cannot Open in OSX 10.4.2 running OS9 Classic

There are some problem not only in just in DVD Studio Pro, but also :
    1) I cannot install and boot from the OS 9.x CD which came with my old G4 in my new Dual G5, 2GHz. Is it true or any things I must done before ?
    2) I then install OS9 Classic in OSX 10.4.2 and install DVD Studio Pro 1.1 and Final Cut Pro 2.0 and upgrade to 3.0 (because of I had many project done in these Version may need some revises required by my clients, even I had brought the New Final Cut Studio but not installed yet), but when I open the application start with Classic, it shows that " That application or control panel was not support by Classic " and stop opening it. It also make me to stop the installation and think about what should I do next not only in the installation but also the future work flow. Are there any expert can give me any solution and suggestion

  • OS9 classic getting connection failed message but starts up ok

I'm working on OSX Tiger and when starting up OS9 Classic, I get this message,"The server may not exist or is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again." OS9 starts up eventually but I want to get rid of the annoying pop-up messages that pop up every two minutes. Thanks

    Hi, Web dude -
Stop (or quit) Classic. Then look in the Servers folder in OS 9's System Folder. Clear out any aliases you find in there.
Small possibility, but one of these may also be at play:
    - Look in the Apple Menu Items folder in OS 9's System Folder; locate and open the Recent Servers folder, if present. Clean that folder out.
    - Look in the Startup Items folder in OS 9's System Folder; remove the alias for anything not present on the hard drive.
    Then restart Classic to test.

  • Java webstart on Mac OS9.2

Hi I have a java webstart application that uploads files to my website, I now have 2 people that want to upload to my site that are running mac OS9.2.
They both seem to be having the same problem as that the java application just does not start. They both have Mac OS runtime for Java 2.2.5 installed
Can someone give me some clues as to what may be going wrong and where to look on a mac as I have never owned one and have no idea.
    Thanks
    Dean

    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/377&vid=381
    From that site:
Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ) is Apple's implementation of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), based on Sun Microsystems' Java 1.1.8 specificationAlso from that site, there is a version 2.2.6 (fixes some Oracle bug)
If you need anything other than 1.1.8, your only option is to ditch 9.2 (which is 5+ years old at this stage!) and get OS X
