Mac osx 10.6.8 software updates freeze

when I try to install the software updates it freezes at the installation phase even after letting it run for hours.  It started with the 2013-001 security update.  I tried to Download the file and manually install it but it stops at "waiting for other installations to complete".  Please help.

Hello, I have a 2008 MacBook running OSX 10.5.2. Every time I try to do a software update to 10.6, it restarts and loads 1/8, then stops going and I have to turn it off. If there's anything else I can try, please let me know! Thanks, Micah

    Hi Micah,
How are you trying this? From an Install Disc? Is it a Gray machine specific disc, or a Retail Disc?

  • Mac OSx V10.6 - Change software update back to apples servers

    Hi All
Wonder if anyone can help. I have a Macbook pro running snow leopard 10.6. This was once connected to our 10.5 xserve but was quickly removed as it would not be used on the server. However, after this the chaps who set it up seemed to have set the software updates to look at our server. Of course, even when connected to the network, our server will not run 10.6 updates (i did read a thread here on how to force it to, but dont feel confident enough to try)
I am trying to work out how to set this machine to start re-using the swscan.apple.com server so the user can take the machine home and update quicktime and other apps which are causing the issues.
I have tried using the latest ISet SUS but doesnt seem to want to view swscan.apple.com. ISet seems to work, if I set the server to be my 10.5 xserve it will connected and gives the error that the server does not support 10.6
    Any tips would be great
    Thanks
    Dan

    Hi,
Open Terminal and enter following command:
    defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
To check if it was written:
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
    This'll do the trick.

  • HT4150 have MAC OSX 10.6.4 which update do I need? 10.6.4 or 10.6.5?

have MAC OSX 10.6.4 which update do I need?

If you run Software Update (on the Apple menu) it will show you the latest updates for all your Apple software. And since the latest update for Snow Leopard is 10.6.8, it will most likely offer to install the 10.6.8 "combo" updater (rather than a series of the in-between ones like 10.6.5 through 10.6.7).
It also should automatically check for other updates after installing any that are prerequisites for other updates (like the Java security fixes that require 10.6.8). If not, keep running it until it says your software is up to date or it only lists things you do not want.
This is by far the easiest way to keep your Apple software up to date. It is a good idea to do that because it increases the security of your data & often patches bugs or adds new minor features to your Apple software.

I am running snow leopard 10.6.1 on my mac, why doesn't running "software update" offer to load 10.6.8?

Please take a screenshot of the following:
Go to the Apple menu which appears in the upper left of the screen, then click About this Mac. Screenshot the window that pops up.
Also under the Apple menu, run Software Update. After it checks for updates, screenshot the window of available updates.

  • Mac OS X 10.6.6 Software Update Freezes

I am currently running Mac OS X 10.6.6.  When running Software update three updates are available OS X 10.6.7, Safari and iTunes.  However I update individually or all together the process freezes with the bar showing approximately 100% and the status as writing files.  Have tried deleting contents of updates folder before running update.  Have also fixed permissions but with no luck!

I can't offer you a direct fix for your problem, but you might consider going to Apple's update download page, downloading the updates you need, and installing them manually.
The OS X 10.6.7 "combo" update is here.
As a matter of routine practice, I'd also use Disk Utility to do "verify disk" and "repair permissions" operations before you try to install the OS X update.

  • HT201380 keep having scrolling problems with Maverick on both iMac and Mac Pro despite downloading mail software update

Have scrolling problems with Maverick despite downloading mail update on both IMAC and Mac Pro
Have to reboot and it helps for awhile then stalls again

The Mac OS X 10.4.7 Update introduced connection issues as a result of (according to the documentation) "Mail now supports connecting to mail servers through a SOCKS proxy". This probably has nothing to do with your problem, but it'd be worth going to System Preferences > Network and making sure the SOCKS Proxy is not enabled in the network configuration used to connect to the Internet.
Also, it looks like the crashes you're talking about are actually freezes, i.e. Mail becomes unresponsive rather than quitting unexpectedly. In Mail, open Window > Activity Viewer, and see whether Mail displays there what it's doing when it freezes. Actually, you may be able to avoid having to force quit Mail by canceling whatever it's doing (by clicking on the red stop icon of the activity).
Reinstalling Mail will probably accomplish nothing, but it might be worth reinstalling the Combo Update for the type of machine and the version of Mac OS X you're using (which you would have to do anyway if you wanted to reinstall Mail):
Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update for Intel
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.

  • How to upgrade my Mac OSX 10.5.8 software

I've an ageing iMac version OSX 10.5.8
How can I upgrade the software and is it worth it? Am I better off just buying a new iMac?
    Thanks all.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.

  • Safari Installer Does Not Recognize Mac OSX After 10.5.5 Update

I have been trying to reinstall Safari on my Mac, and after downloading the installer it says that my hard drives does not contain OSX and cannot be installed. This is after I did the OSX 10.5.5 update. I know I can reinstall from the OS disc but it is a hassle really.

    Hello,
Sounds like your Software Updater is confused. Locate this file: com.apple.softwareupdate.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Try Software Update now.
Also, whenever you do an update like 10.5.4 to 10.5.5... run Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions BEFORE and AFTER the update. That can fix a myriad of problems with any updates.
Disk Utility is in your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch DU, select the FirstAid tab, then click Repair Disk Permissions. Takes about a minute to run depending on the size of the drive. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility from the Menu Bar. That's all there is to it.

  • Mac os 10.4.10 software update problem -- my mac does not work anymore :(

    hello!
i have a powerbook G4- PPC. just today, i did a software update of my OS to 10.4.10 (it was the available update version according to the automatic uptae) and during the final stage of the installation, it says "a problem was encountered...installation package is moved to trash"
when i browsed my mac, my apps does not work anymore!!! they just bounce from the dock when i clicked it but it won't open any window. i emptied the trash and restarted my mac but sadly, it just boot but won't continue to the log in part, only in the silver window with the apple logo and mac os x tiger... and the mouse just turns into the color wheel. i waited for 30 mins and nothing happened.
i don't have a startup disc because the mac is a gift and it was long time ago. is ther a software i can use to fix or revert the changes of the unsuccessful OS update? why is there always a problem when i do OS update? isn't apple software stable?
My mac problems' driving me crazy!!!

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

  • Installing Mac OSX 10.4.11 combined update

I'm having issues with my Mac locking up. The mouse, pointer freezes and everything locks up completely, forcing me to restart. I thought just reinstalling my 10.4.11 combined update would fix it, but I'm now in the middle of the process and wonder if I've done the right thing. I've just installed the combined update and it's telling me to restart, but I'm worried now that it might mess something up. If I just restart will it screw anything up? Maybe it won't fix my problem, but I just don't want to lose anything I have on my machine. So if I just get out of this process I'll be happy.
Also, I purchased Tiger early on, but can only find my 10.3 Tiger disc, not a 10.4. There should have been a straight 10.4 disc, correct? Since I purchased it, way back when, shouldn't I be able to pay for a replacement disc and shipping? Then I could replace my system, hopefully curing my problem.
My Mac has been so reliable over the years I can't even remember whether there truly even was a 10.4 disc. It's been so long since I've had problems.
Thank you in advance for your help!
    Leonard

    Hi Leonard,
Maybe it won't fix my problem, but I just don't want to lose anything I have on my machine. So if I just get out of this process I'll be happy.
Too late, only way out is to restart.
Also, I purchased Tiger early on, but can only find my 10.3 Tiger disc, not a 10.4. There should have been a straight 10.4 disc, correct?
Correct, & do not use the 10.3's Disk Utility on a 10.4 volume.
Since I purchased it, way back when, shouldn't I be able to pay for a replacement disc and shipping?
No, the only "Replacement Discs" they might have are the ones your Mac came with, 10.3 apparently.
