87 seconds isn't unreasonable but you might be able to improve upon it.
Back up your system. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
PC Tools "iAntiVirus" is worthless. Remove it by following these instructions: How to Uninstall PC Tools iAntiVirus
Like most subscription-based backup services, Backblaze runs poorly on Macs. Try disabling or uninstalling it according to its instructions.

  • Mac Mini 10.6.8 slow startup

I have a mac mini with 2 gb ram running 10.6.8. Hard drive is 500gb with over half of that unused. Initial boot time first thing in the morning is slightly over a minute. It also starts programs pretty slow after that for about 30 minutes. Then it seems fine for the rest of the day for the most part.
    I have reset pram.
    Repaired permissions.
Excluded programs that I don't need from the login items list.
Placed console and activitiy monitor in the login items in order to see if anything stands out as soon as it is booted. Nothing stands out to me.
Below is the console listing from that last restart. I am hoping that someone might see something here that would give a clue to the slow down.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

There seems to be a login item "com.logmein.logmeinguiagentatlogin" (which I can't identify) that is giving you a problem at login?
Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items and see what programs that you have set to open at login.
    Example:
First try removing one or two that seem suspect from the list and see if that helps. Then if that doesn't help, remove them all.
Also keep in mind that some may reappear on there own at the next startup, if they do please let us know what they are.

  • Mac book pro very very slow startup

My macbook pro has become painfully slow at startup 15 mins+. Once up and running it seems fine. I have removed unnecessary  start up items and reset the PRAM. SMART status is verified. I'm running Lion 10.7.5 4GB memory and 750 GB HD with 640GB available.

I have just installed Maverick and the problem has gone away!

  • HT1338 anyone know what causes the mac book pro to have slow startup ?

takes a longtime for my mac book pro to start up any ideas ? already tried clearing cookies and basics

First, make sure you have adequate backups. If your hard disk is failing this could be a sign. It can be replaced if necessary, but a backup strategy is recommended whether or not you are experiencing problems.
Read: OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac runs slowly. The article is very cursory, but be sure to read through to the end. Unfortunately the link there is broken, so use this one: Disk Utility. To do this you must start your Mac from the Recovery System or Internet Recovery.
Rather than ask a dozen questions for more details about your system consider the following:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply. Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

  • IMac Memory Issues: "Your Mac OSX Startup Disk Has No More Space Available"

    Hi all,
I've done some extensive searching on my issue, and haven't been able to find a solid solution.  I was hoping that if I shared my specific problem, it might shed some light on what is going on.  My OS is current:  10.8.2  with plenty of HD space (over 250 GB) and 4 GB ram.
Over the past couple of days, my iMac has become very slow and laggy.  Most times I will eventually get the message:  "Your Mac OSX Startup Disk Has No More Space Available".  This is after it has been lagging for quite a while, sometimes several hours.
I will restart, things will be sufficiently fast for a few minutes, but once I start working in any application (including any browser, or adobe software) it starts to slow down until it is eventually to a crawl, with the spinny wheel showing up often, even when only one application is open at a time.  It doesn't take more than several minutes to start slowing down.  Even simple things like hovering over the dock start to really lag, or opening my applications folder or System Preferences can take upwards of 15-30 seconds, even several minutes sometimes.
Here's some steps I've taken so far:
    -  Checked the activity monitor and system memory seems fine.  No single app takes up more than 7% or so of memory at any given time.  1.65 GB active, 1.64 GB inactive, about 700 MB wired, free about 4 MB.  VM size is 247 GB, CPU also seems OK:  (%user around 10-20%, %System around 10%, Idle around 70-80%).  No single app seems to be taking up an excessive amount of Real Memory.
    -  Permissions repair (It found some things to fix, but never completely finished, seemed to freeze after several hours, tried it several times)
    -  Checked disk for repair (no problems found), did the S.M.A.R.T check and ran tests again using Onyx.
    -  Re-indexed Macintosh HD
    -  I saw a suggestion to reset the PRAM, so I did that.
I do have the system backed up via Time Machine.  Suggestions for further action are very much appreciated!

Ok, thanks.  Here's a screenshot from during when it was running to a near halt (took me a while even to take the screenshot):
Here's a second screenshot after restart.  All I did was open Chrome to post this:
At this exact moment I have about 500MB of memory free, but I have been watching it slowly count down starting from 2GB free when I first restarted.  So far it is running smoothly, but I am guessing that it will start to lag again once the free memory dials down.
In case there is any correlation:  I happened to have a strange issue with my internet connection.  My router seems to be working fine, and I have wi-fi connected around the house.  However, I did have my iMac connected via ethernet cable, and the wired connection was not working (was not finding a DNS address), but when I go to Wi-fi, it works.  Again, could be totally unrelated, but it started just before the slowdown.

  • Mac OSX very Slow after update iLife

    Dear all;
I just faced problem with my Mac OSX 10.8.4 after upgrade the iLife, the OS freeze then logout from the system
any ideas how to solve this problem?
    Regards;

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

-- Make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.
Control (ctrl) cick the MacintoshHD icon on the Desktop then click Get Info.
    You'll see Capacity & Available
Less than 10 to 15% free space can slow the drive down.
--  Avoid third party cleaning utilties. They tend to do more harm then good.
-- Verify the startup disk for errors using Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
If the disk needs repairing and you did not get the original install discs that came with this Mac, you will have to call Apple.
Contacting Apple for support and service
Keep in mind v10.5 came out in 2007, so the Macbook may be slow do to use over a six year period.

  • Internet is too slow on mac osx

i use boot camp .... internet on windows = blazing fast. internet on mac osx = crap, always losing connection and can't stream videos. I find myself booting into windows 10 times to every one time i boot into osx. seriously. really?? i paid a premium for what? eye candy?

There's nothing specific about Mac OS X that would cause it to be 'slow' when networking. I (and I'm sure lots of others here as well) have many Macs owned over several years which are blazingly fast using the network.
If your network is slow, there's got to be a specific reason. We can probably help you isolate the various causes and find out what is causing it to behave so slowly.
I do not know what level of expertise you have when working with computers or networks so I will try to be specific. If we are to help you, you will need to be specific and accurate when responding. Vague answers from you will only net vague guesses from us. Specific answers from you will likely result in our being able to provide you with specific suggestions and fixes.
If the Mac is fast when running Windows, but slow when running OS X then it's not likely that you actually have a hardware defect (bad network interface, disconnected wifi antenna, etc. as these problems would manifest whether running OS X or Windows on the same hardware.
First, tell us about your Mac and your network. Which Mac model do you have? How much memory does it have? What OS version is it running? If you run "Software Update" is this Mac fully and completely up-to-date with the latest patches?
A long while back there was a known bug in Leopard that would cause a MacBook Pro to be slow if using a wireless network while on battery power (it would be fast if connected to AC power). That was patched long ago. (hence my interest in which OS revision you are running and whether it is fully patched)
What brand & model network router are you using?
What type of network connection are you using on your Mac? Are you using a physical ethernet connection (you plug in a network cable) or are you using wireless? What type of ISP do you have and what is the nature of the connection (cable, DSL, wireless, satellite?)
In "System Preferences" -> "Network", select your active network interface (typically either "Ethernet" or "Airport"), then select the "Advanced..." button in the lower right corner. On the next select the "Ethernet" tab across the top (usually the far-right). Is "Configure:" set to "Automatically"? Is the "MTU:" show a grayed out value that reads "Standard (1500)"? If not, what values do you see?
    Next
Start "Network Utility" (it's under "Applications" -> "Utilities"), go to the "Info" tab, select your active network interface (probably ether "Ethernet (en0)" or "Airport (en1)").
What is the "Link Speed" of your connection?
On the right side of the Network Utility "Info" tab are some "Transfer Statistics", including a count of "Send Errors" and "Recv Errors". These are typically very small numbers (usually single-digit values) and do +not necessarily+ mean there is a problem. TCP/IP networking was specifically designed to allow for errors, dropped packets, lost packets, time-outs, etc. and still be able to function without causing problems for the operating system or it's applications (errors are automatically detected and corrected -- usually by retransmitting the troubled packets). These do not necessarily mean there is a problem with your computer... an error, congestion, router problem, etc. anywhere in the network can cause these. With that in mind, what is your total number of sent packets and how many send errors do you have? What is your total number of received packets and how many receive errors do you have? (as an example, my system has over 4 million packets sent and 0 errors, but about 3.3 million packets received and 5 errors -- another mac I checked happens to have 6 send and receive errors. As I said... very small numbers and especially when considering the total number of packets sent or received. If your numbers are large (4 digit values, etc.) then there may be a problem.
    Next
I'd like to isolate and test the quality of the connection between your Mac and your router (ignoring the rest of the Internet). If the connection between those two components is solid and healthy, then any slow down would be a problem elsewhere in the network and not, specifically, your Mac.
There is something called "MTU" (maximum transmission unit) that I wont get into just now. A problem with MTU can cause slow delivery of packets on what should be a blazingly fast network in otherwise excellent health, but I'll set that aside for now. 99.9% of the time you should never attempt to alter the MTU.
Go into "System Preferences" -> "Network", select your network interface (either Ethernet or Airport -- whichever you happen to be using) then note the value displayed for "Router:"
Back in "Network Utility", select the "Ping" tab and type in the value displayed for your Router (which you noted above) into the box labeled "Enter the network address to ping." Usually this is a number that looks like "192.168.1.1" or "192.168.0.1" or "10.0.0.1", etc. (almost always ends with a ".1". After entering the number, verify that you have select "Send only [10] pings" (that's the default), then click "Ping" to start the test.
What was the min/average/max/stddev values reported at the end of the ping? On a healthy wired network, the values will typically be less than .5 milliseconds. On a healthy wireless network the values will typically be in the 2-4ms range.
Your answers to these questions will help us rule IN or rule OUT various possible causes.

  • InDesign CS6 on Mac OSX 10.9.3 crashes on startup

    Hello out there
I have a problem with InDesign CS6 on Mac OSX 10.9.3 and I'm really desperate right now...
I've installed the CS6 Master Collection some days ago.. all programs (f.e. Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects) are working fine, but InDesign doesn't.
When I try to start it, it suddenly crashes during (or immediately after) the step "Starting up Service Registry":
You can find the crash log here:
    http://db.tt/vzRV3kzt
    These are my computer facts:
    I really tried everything..
For example I tried all those steps:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/indesign-or-incopy-freezes-or-1.html
    and this:
    http://d43.me/blog/1370/fix-for-applications-crashing-on-startup-in-mountain-lion/
    and this:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-system-errors-freezes-mac.html
and I also tried starting it in the Admin/Safety Mode.
I also did some research in this forum, but couldn't find a solution...
So, I have no further ideas how to solve that problem.
Did anybody have the same problem? It would be really great if you could help me...
I never had any problems with InDesign CS5 or earlier versions.
    Many thx,
    Isabella

I am on Windows, but have 2 links that may help

  • New MacAir error states "your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory"  All I have added is MS Office

My new Mac Air states that my " Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory" and wants to force quit Safari.  I have only added MS Office to the computer and Carbonite.  Any suggestions?

Select the icon of your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you renamed it) in the Finder and open the Info window. What value is shown for Available (space)?

  • Subversion on Mac OSX slow

Have a question about subversion. I am using subversion on mac osx 10.6.6.
I'm not using any GUI, but rather through the Terminal (connection through svn+ssh)
My question is "why is it so slow to do update, commit etc. operations"?
I have tried the same svn setup on windows and linux (ubuntu) machines and it's lightning fast, but not on the mac.... excruciating slow!
Hope someone can help me. Thnx:)

Run Activity Monitor and see if anything shows there that may be a factor.
Run System Profiler/Logs/Console and monitor messages for anything that may shed light, etc.
    Max out your ram too
    Good luck

  • InDesign CS5 crashes on startup - Mac OSX Lion

    Hi Everyone,
I've reinstalled InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator CS5 after upgrading to Mac OSX Lion,
Photoshop and Illustrator work fine but InDesign crashes on startup.
I've followed a few threads on here, one suggested creating a new adimistrator-level user on my machine - and that works, but I can't figure out what to fix in my regular user to make InDesign work in here again...
This is the error report I'm getting:
    http://pastebin.com/a2LrMFdw
    Help, anyone?
    Thanks a lot!

I'm having a similar problem but I haven't been able to get it to work. I created a new administer level user but InDesign still won't open under that user. I've tried the other suggestions as well with no success. Please help!!!! It really doesn't help that I'm in South East Asia traveling with no fast internet to be found.  :\

Hey i have a old powerbook G4 laptop and i was wondering where can i download the OS ( Mac OSX 10.5.8 Build ( 9L30 ) to do a fresh install my system is running really slow is there any place where i can down load this OS?

    Hello,
Unfortunately Apple do not offer a download for mac OS X 10.5.8. They will only provide updates available for download. ( Normally you would do so once the OS is installed)
To do a fresh install of this software your going to need to buy a retail copy of the disk.
There are some vendors who do still stock the media disk, but they can be expensive.
    Best of luck.

  • "Your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory" - uploading files problem

    Hi everyone,
    I'm running a late-2012 27 inch iMac - 3.4GHz Intel Core i7, 32GB 1600 MHz DDR3 with the 3TB fusion drive, OS 10.8.4. At present there is 1.92TB of available storage.
I have received this message "Your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory" just before a full on crash multiple times in the past couple of days whilst using WeTransfer to send over some large files (500MB+). The applications I have had open at the time have been: Activity Monitor, App Store, Firefox, and Finder. Over the course of uploading the files, the active system memory has gone from 1.04GB and steadily increased until it more or less maxes out around 29GB, at which point the Page Outs rocket up to around 40GB/s and the swap memory fills up pretty quickly until the computer basically can't take any more and blacks out.
This is a pretty new thing, haven't really had an issues before. My main software used: Sibelius 7 & Logic Pro X. I've also recently started working with Final Cut Pro X, which seems to have been struggling at points. I've tried closing everything, restarting the computer and not opening anything (specifically NOT FCPX) before attempting an upload. I've even gone so far as to remove FCPX from my system, and yet the problem is still recurring. Both "kernal_task" and "WindowServer" have been running high on CPU when these problems have occurred.
Does anyone know what might be the issue and how it could possibly be resolved?
Really appreciate any help, I'm in the middle of a fairly sizeable project and the deadlines are just around the corner.
    Thanks,
    Tom

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory. That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • Very slow Mac OSX Lion download from App Store

    Hi  All,
I  have  recently  purchased  Mac OSX  Lion  (3  days  ago)  on  App  Store  (Malaysia). The  download  is  extremely  slow  and
I  am  not  sure  if  there  could  be  any  other  problem  contributing  to  this  issue.
Currently  I  have  only  completed  about  1.61GB  out  of  3.74GB  after  3  days. But,  it  was  not  a  continuous  download  but
rather  stop  and  resume  every  3  hours. My  internet  connection  speed  as  I  checked  on  speedtest.net  was  4Mbps.
The  time  left  to  complete  the  download  is  shown  as  2  days  and  20  hours. I  think  it's  not  sensible  to  have  such  a
long  time  to  complete  the  download  with  an  available  connection  speed  of  4Mbps.
Any  solutions  for  this  problem ?

Thank  you  for  keeping  the  thread  alive.
Now  I'm  experiencing  better  download  speeds  with  remaining  time  of  (7  hours  and  a  few  minutes).
The  connection  speed  I  have  is  about  5Mbps.
I  would  suggest  anyone  with  download  speed  issues  to  follow  several  maintanence  tips  (if  not  all)  from  here :
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20005830-263.html
It  may  not  seem  worthy  or  the  "solution  for  the  problem"  but  it  has  certainly  made  the  difference  for  me.
