Mac OSX boot time -  1.5 mins : Login time - 1.5 minutes

Hi
I have a new Mac Book Pro 15 (6 months old), which I have been using pretty much intensely. I have noticed that the boot time have gone incredibly slow. The sound that appears while booting and teh apple logo used to come up at the same time, but now, it isn't like that. There is a 45 second lag between the two. As in, the sound comes up instantly as the power on button is hit and after 45 seconds the logo comes up. Then it takes another minute to boot - for the login screen to come up. Finally, when I login, it takes another 1.5 minutes for everything to come up. Skype ad growl are the only login items and it takes quite some time for it to come. Skype jumps almost 40 times before it starts on the dock.
What do you think is the problem. I use Onyx to clean my system and the system is updated. Disk repair tool also says that everything is ok.
Is re-installation the only way?

  • Mac Pro Boot Time?

How long does it take for your new Mac Pro to boot
(from the moment of pushing the power button til the dock appears)?
    Mine took 49 seconds (2,26Ghz 8-core, 12GB RAM, 1TB boot drive)...shouldn't
    the boot time be faster?

Boot time to the desktop is hugely affected by the number of Login Items you have installed. You can see this by starting from the login screen and holding Shift as you log in, to skip all login items. On my Macs, skipping the login items saves many, many seconds. It could be the difference between a 30 second boot and a 50 second boot, depending on what you are loading at login.
If you installed software that uses kernel extensions, the more of those you have can also slow boot time. I think you can skip those with Shift at startup.
There are RAM checks at startup, so more RAM could also delay the boot time.

  • Powerbook stuck at mac osx boot up

my computer is stuck at the mac os x screen upon boot up the blue line fills then stops at end when full and still says for at least last twenty minutes starting mac osx at bottom, if anyone has any ideas to help thx

Did this just start, and if so, have you added any software or hardware recently? First, unplug any hardware you have plugged into any port.
    Have you tried:
A safe boot: Reboot, holding the shift key down. This does some disk maintenance and doesn't load login items, amongst other things. Does this work? If so, try a normal reboot right after, does it work now?
Insert the first OS X DVD you have, and reboot holding the C key down. This will boot from the DVD. If you can do this, bring up disk utility from the utilities menu, and fix permissions and repair the disk. Does the repair indicate that anything was done? Any issues identified? Can you boot normally now?

  • Mac osx boot drive

I want to mac a usb boot drive for my 2012 mac mini. Can I do it?

Do you wish to install Mountain Lion on the external drive or do you want to clone your existing startup drive to the external drive? The latter is fairly easy to do:
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
         5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
The former is a little bit more difficult:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your external HDD from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure you have selected the external drive as the target.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mac OSX doesn't see ipod Mini

Hey, I have the MacBook, and I know it isn't a software issue because it doesn't connect to any machines. The Mac doesn't even bring up the icon on the CPU. What should I do?
Also on the ipod it just has the battery icon, and it isn't charging, it is staying on the first block.

Uh, don't want to sound like a smartarse, but how can s/he restore it if the iPod isn't recognised... :-/

  • Slow boot time (10 - 15 minutes)

My iMac 2.66 running 10.6.8 runs fine. But when I restart or boot up from shutdown, it takes a good 10 - 15 minutes of blank gray screen to reach the gray apple. Once there, it goes quickly to the login screen and all is well again.
Having searched these discussions, I've tried the following with no success:
    •Safe Boot
    •deleted from Login Items
•Zapped the PRAM (possible clue: I can only do it once; when I continue to hold down the keys for an additional 2 minutes or so, nothing more happens after that first Zap. PRAM battery problem?)
    Any other ideas?

    Interesting,
A few questions before we do anything:
Can you check if your HDD is in good health? Go to Application> Utilities> Disk Utility. Click the hard drive name (which is the manufacturer's model). What does the SMART Status report? If it says, verified it means that your computer is fine; if not your HDD is about to die and you should back up your data immediately.
Did you checked your disk permissions? See this article, and this one.
How's your Hard Drive available space? Keep in mind that OS X (and most other OSs) like at least 15% free space to do their work happily.
How much RAM you have installed? Is it all being used up while you are logged in the computer?
Did you checked the directory ownership? Run the following command and post your results here. Do this by copying the command below and launching Terminal from Applications> Utilities
    sudo ls -al /
    Hope this helps!

  • Understanding the system log (boot time 2 minutes)

    Dear Apple Discussion,
I am trying to read the system.log correctly - mainly because my boot time is 2 minutes.
I have read that the beginning of the boot up is indicated by the line:
localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us
    is this correct?
    Next, does the line:
loginwindow[165]: Login Window Started Security Agent
indicate that the login window has come up?
If both of these are correct then my boot time should be 18s (according to the time stamps in the log) - it defefinitely is not that.
Does the boot process start instead at this line:
    shutdown: reboot by root:
If this were the case, the boot time would be closer to 2 minutes according to the log (which is what it actually is).
This then brings up the next problem: the two minutes basically come from the following line:
Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt shutdown: reboot by root:
Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt SystemStarter[177]: authentication service (194) did not complete successfully
Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt kernel[0]: CiscoVPN : unloading cisco ipsec kernel module.
    Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt kernel[0]: CiscoVPN : detaching from interface: en1.
Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt kernel[0]: CiscoVPN : interface en1, filter has been safely detached.
    Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt kernel[0]: CiscoVPN : detaching from interface: en0.
Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt kernel[0]: CiscoVPN : interface en0, filter has been safely detached.
Nov 29 17:32:12 localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us
ending line of the boot process occurs at (if my above assumption is correct):
Nov 29 17:32:31 Purrfekt loginwindow[165]: Login Window Started Security Agent
So why does it hang for so long at this one process? Am I reading the log incorrectly? I have searched around here and also on google ("slow boot time", "cisco vpn tiger", etc..) but haven't found anything relating to my problem.
    Thanks for any help.

    v.1 PowerBook G4 15''   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I am trying to read the system.log correctly - mainly because my boot time is 2 minutes.
It appears to be that a restart or shutdown process delays nearly 2 minutes rather than a startup process, presumably due to one of WindowServer children or a bug stays in Mac OS X 10.4.3 Update-- Mine delays approximately 30 - 40 minutes on PowerMac G5 2.7 Ghz on every shutdown or restart process. Your computer is PowerMac G4 so that make sense. I found a suspect application which is a security related. Although I am still investigating further because the issue does not occur on the lower drive bay where I install another Mac OS X 10.4.3 Update (but no third-party software) as a test facility.
localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us
This is correct and the first line to display sequential events in a boot process.
loginwindow[165]: Login Window Started Security Agent
This is also a normal behavior.
SystemStarter[xxx]: authentication service (xxx) did not complete successfully
This can be displayed depending on a computer configuration.
A sequential event from CiscoVPN: unloading cisco ipsec kernel module to CiscoVPN: interface en0, filter has been safely detached seems to be all right if you PROPERLY configure VPN policy and IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) authenticate, etc for your Cisco device. IPsec is a framework for a set of protocols for security at the network or packet processing layer of network communication.
I suggest to check all related settings with Netwrok/Sharing panes and the router configurations for VPN (IPsec), IPv6, security, etc. Also check routing table and all socket connections after you launch Network Utility or via Terminal commands.
FYI: interface en0 is a wired connection and interface en1 is a wireless connection such as AirPort. IPsec kernel module is a unit of kernel program or componet for IPsec.
    Hope this helps.

When I start my HP laptop is does work perfect to print wireless - but I am unable to find the printer with my iPhone, iPad or Mac Mini. Anyone having an idea what to do?
I also configured the printer on Mac OSx many times..
    Regards!

  • Mac osx server 10.6

Hi everyone , i just clone mac osx server   10.6 from mini to my macbook. its clone successful  and boot fine . i did this for just practice . the problem is that when i disconnect   eathenet cable from that  the server  preference not working , i m looking something like Loopback adapter    in windows ..  so i can  open server preference  in  my macbook .... without  plugin eathenet cable at my home ....

well if your trying to connect to the host, without an active network port you could try connecting with localhost or 107.0.0.1. You could also try deleting the ethernet interface and re-adding it. And or hard coding the ethernet interface to static ip.

  • MBP running Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.8 cannot get past login screen even in safe boot

Help!  I have a Macbook Pro purchased in 2009, running Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.8 which froze while running Adobe Illustrator.  On reboot, it won't allow me to go past the login screen.  I tried starting up from the disc, running disk verification and repair and repairing disk permissions, and trying to start up in safe boot, all to no avail.  When the login screen comes up it gives the name of my hard drive with a (2) after it, which seems strange.  Any suggestions short of reinstalling the system software?  I don't want to lose my applications/data!

I am a novice mac user. Again my mac is getting slower by the day and i dont know how to increase its overall performance. Is there any simple software that can boost overall performance or will I have to reformat my MBP? I have a 200gb HD with 50 gb free and 4 gb of ram.
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Launch the Activity Monitor utility. Pull down the list near the top and set it to "All Processes". Click on the "CPU" column heading to put the highest CPU consumers at the top. Also click on the "CPU" tab in the lower part of the window to check the value for "% Idle". If that value is much above zero, check the other categories for signs of resource problems. If nothing there points to a possible problem, launch the Console utility and look for messages that might suggest a problem. If you see messages that you have trouble interpreting, post them here and someone should be able to help.

  • When dual-booting with Windows 7, Mac OSX time settings reset every reboot.

I have recently installed Windows 7 Professional on my mid 2010 MacBook Pro via BootCamp (Running Mavericks BTW). Everything runs grean and have not experienced any problems on the Windows side, but I have a problem with Mac OSX now. When I am using Windows 7, and I reboot into Mac OSX, I find that my time settings are wrong. It seems like my time zone has changed, because the date is correct, as well as the minutes, but the hour is always wrong. When I go to Date & Time in System Preferences, and my time zone is correct, but I still have to chage the hour in the time. Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to stop it would be greatly appreciated.

If you dual boot your Windows PC with OS X or Linux, you may have experienced a problem in which your clocks reset themselves incorrectly every time you boot into Windows. Here's a simple registry edit to fix that.
Essentially, the incorrect clock setting happens because OS X and Linux use GMT time while Windows tries to synchronize with your local time zone, getting confused when you reboot between the two. Apple's own Boot Camp drivers for Windows are supposed to fix this problem, though some users have noticed that it still happens even with the drivers installed, and some Linux users are left out in the cold. Furthermore, if you have a Hackintosh, you can't install the Boot Camp drivers, so you'll need to find another way around the problem.
To fix it, just hit Start and type regedit.exe in the search box. Hit Enter and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation. Right click anywhere in the right pane and hit New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name it RealTimeIsUniversal, then double click on it and give it a value of 1.
Lastly, reboot into OS X, then reboot back into Windows. You should now notice that your clock actually displays the correct time.

  • Long Boot Time - 2011 Mac Mini, 10.7.4

I'm experiencing a pretty substantial delay when booting my Mac mini; it takes about 70 seconds from power button to desktop.  I'm using a newly installed OWC SSD and a fresh install of OS X 10.7.4.  After doing performing some basic troubleshooting (repair permissions, clear caches, reset SMC, re-affirm startup disk, etc.), I decided to boot into verbose mode and see where the process was getting delayed
The system boots normally until I see the message "AppleThunderboltNHI::enablePower - turn power off, status = 0x0, result_value = 0x0".  The boot process hangs there for 45 seconds before the desktop appears.  The kernel.log confirms this:

Any ideas about what's causing this boot delay?  Although my SSD performs great once the desktop appears, the boot time leaves much to be desired.  My system used to boot faster from my FireWire hard drive!

Sorry for the delay.  I tried an experiment, which I think confirms your suspicion about the HDMI monitor.  It's actually a DVI monitor using the Apple HDMI->DVI adapter that shipped with the Mac mini.  I reinstalled OS X 10.7 (10.7.3) and didn't perform any updates or software installations.  This cut down on the log messages, and eliminated some other variables.
Below are the kernel.log entries for two successive reboots.  The first boot is a normal one, with the monitor attached.  The second boot occurred with the HDMI adapter unplugged; I plugged it back in after several minutes to verify that the "EDID" message is triggered by this action.

  • How to fix time changing in boot camp to mac osx

After I installed Windows 7 Ultimate with boot camp on my 2011 Macbook Pro I installed the drivers from the disc and installed all the updates from software update in windows 7.
Whenever I restart into Mac OSX 10.6.8 it will change the date to the next day (or about 11 hours) and even if the automatic time set from the internet is selected it will still say this is the correct time
So i change it manually and keep it this way. But then again whenever I restart into W7 it will change back to a different time
I have had a look at this forum but with the last suggestion on the page but there was no file specified to delete
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2253940?threadID=2253940&tstart=0
Thanks and I hope i can get this fixed in a couple of days!
I might have to go into the apple genius bar if i cannot get it fixed online

As you've learned the hard way, if you were expecting an instant answer to a problem or technical question, you won't often find it here unless many other people are encountering the issue at the same moment on the same day. If no-one currently online when you post your message has encountered your specific issue or problem and been able to remedy it, you're unlikely to get an immediate response.
In the less-active areas of these forums, questions often linger 24 hours or more before receiving a response, and many questions go unanswered far longer. That is because these are free user-to-user forums, not a paid tech support help line.
And yet, some wonderful people spend an extraordinary amount of time here being helpful: Take a look at the list of Top Participants in any Community. It is based upon reputation points. It takes decades of determined effort to achieve a 'Level 10' status!
I've been a casual user here for almost four years, and I'm barely a 'Level 3' which begins at 500 reputation points, equating to as few as 50 'correct' or as many as 100 'helpful' answers, so take any advice I've posted within these forums at your own risk.
Not being one to assume that any totally frustrated user actually searches far and wide within or outside these forums for answers, or even understands how to use the forum search feature before getting frustrated, I'll offer some links that could still be helpful...
The Boot Camp time sync issue goes back to at least 2007-2008, which predates both OS X 10.6 and Windows 7.  A popular search engine will provide quite a number of off-forum links that may or may not be helpful.
This old link within Apple Support Communities provides a couple of off-site Microsoft links to instructions for setting the system clock and synchronizing with an internet time server.  It does not specifically address OS X 10.6 and Windows 7, but OS X 10.5, Windows XP and Windows Vista: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1285
Note that you must have an active internet connection for time-sync to work properly.
Have you set up your network connection(s) on the Windows 7 side?
Which time zone have you selected on the Windows side?
Which internet time server(s) are you using on OS X and in Windows?
This off-site post suggests using regedit in Windows to disable the Apple Time Service in Windows.

May that future responses to your questions within the Apple Support Communities be, uh, somewhat more timely.
