"Mac OSX cannot be upgraded to v.10.5 on your computer" --a brand new MBP.

I have a new MacBook Pro (one week old), which, according to the Mac store, was supposed to arrive with 10.5 already installed. Instead, I was sent the MBP along with the 10.5 installation disc ("Here, do it yourself!").
First, I updated to 10.4.11. Then I ran the 10.5 installation disc. I get the error message:
Mac OSX cannot be upgraded to v.10.5 on your computer. / Mac OSX v.10.4 or later could not be found on your computer.
What? Am I missing something really obvious? Any one else encounter this?
(After reading at least 20 topics in this forum, I'm afraid to run 10.5; as if it may just cause even more problems.)
So, if any one else has seen this error message, how did you resolve it?

I bet if you hadn't done that it would have worked fine.
Since it is a new computer, just re-partition the drive and install 10.5.
That won't work because the DVD will probably look for Tiger on the computer. The DVD is an upgrade not a full install, AFAIK from other posts.
The only solution is to reinstall Tiger and then Leopard. But why? If the OP bought a new machine with Leopard and it was not installed it's an older model and should be exchanged for a new one with Leopard preinstalled.

  • Mac OSX cannot be upgraded to v.10.5 on your computer

I have a Macbook Pro that is 3 months old running 10.4.11. I am trying to upgrade to leopard and repeatedly get the error:
Mac OSX cannot be upgraded to v.10.5 on your computer. / Mac OSX v.10.4 or later could not be found on your computer.
Then when I run a verify on my hard drive I get this error:
    Verifying volume “Hard Drive”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid record count
The volume Hard Drive needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
But it won't allow me to repair the hard drive when running Disk Utility from the leopard cd. I also have boot camp installed, could this be causing conflicts? Does anyone have any suggestions or am I going to have to wipe my comp and start with a clean install. It's not a huge problem although I don't have access to some of the install discs for 3rd party software (i.e. quickbooks, office, photoshop, illustrator) can I just drag these back into the apps folder after I install?

Try rebooting with the install/backup CD that came with your new machine. Hold down the letter C from the point of rebooting until you see the spinning activity monitor icon. Running disk utilities and repairing the disk from your 10.4x install disc may have more luck than using the Leopard CD.
Once the volume is repaired, you should be good to go. I hope that helps!

  • Core duo 2 ghz: Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer

My intel core duo 2ghz macbook pro will not accept the instal of Leopard.
getting this error from the CD boot
"Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer"
    "restart"
I have confirmed this Fujitsu drive is formated GUID.
A Tiger install disk allows booting and Tiger install.
Whats the scret handshake to get this Leopard install to happen? Any help is appreciated.

What is the source of the DVD? Retail? DVD from a different computer?

  • "Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer" Error

    What Mac/Specs:
I am trying to completely clear out and reformat a 13" MacBook Pro 2.26Ghz with the 250GB hard drive (mid-2010 version) which had been running Mountain Lion to its "factory" settings.
    Hurdle 1:
When I tried to reformat it I had the erase/partition options greyed out.  Duh- needed to use a different start up disk.
    Actions taken & Hurdle 2:
I then inserted the original disk (with OSX10.6) and started up with the C key held down but ended up getting the above error message "Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer".
    Actions taken 2:
I tried to "backup from Time Machine" (as that was the only option I could click other than restarting) and managed to access the Disk Utillity that way.  I was then able to erase and re-partition the drive as Mac Extended Journaled and made sure that the S.M.A.R.T. verification was verified before I did so.
    Hurdle 3 (= Hurdle 2):
This got me to the point of having a clean slate but the error message persists.
    Question:
What can I do to move forward?  I do not want to reinstall Mountain Lion, I want to pass on the computer restored to its original factory settings.
    Please and thank you.

Sorry for the late update- I ended up checking the disks (I have two MacBook Pros bought two months apart) and tried the other one.  Turns out that though they were the same OSX (10.6.3 v1) they had different teeny serial numbers.
To answer BDAqua-  yes, it was the disk for the same MacBook Pro model but clearly not "same" enough.  And no- the disks had never been used.  Pleased to report that it is all sorted now, but wanted to thank you massively for your answer anyway.
    You had it in one!

Sounds like the Time Machine Local Backup.  Try turning Time Machine Off in System Preferences to verify.
See: OS X Lion: About Time Machine's "local snapshots" on portable Macs
    But, your real problem is
I forgot to mention that I tried to use Disk Utility to Verify Disk, but it cannot. I get red errors that say the MacHD is corrupt and needs to be repaired. It says that in order to do this I need to use the Disk Utility on the install disk, but Lion doesn't have one!
Boot into Lion's Recovery (Hold ⌘R on Boot), select Disk Utility and then select Macintosh HD and click [Repair Disk]

  • Is it possible to have a phone line connected to a Mac Mini (OS X10.8.2) so you can use your computer with Parallels (Windows xp) to dial into a modem to download data being collected and stored at the remote location?

Is it possible to have a phone line connected to a Mac Mini (OS X10.8.2) so you can use your computer with Parallels (Windows xp) to dial into a modem to download data being collected and stored at the remote location?

Hi, do you mean a real Dial-up Modem as in the old days?
As I recall, the Apple USB Modem won't work in 64 bit OSes, but there are others that will, I think this is one of them...

Or is the Modem on the other end Cable/DSL/FiberOptic?

  • How much does OSX take up on a brand new MBP HD?

Does anyone know on a Brand new MBP 128 SSD drive....how much is allocated to the OSX?
    Thanks in advance

You do need to install Windows twice - once under Boot Camp and once under Parallels - but you can legally use the same CD with the same licence for both installations. There is no need to buy two copies.
There is a program called Monolingual that will assist in removing the additional language support. Be care, as it has removed the components needed to run Rosetta for some users who were not as careful as they should have been.
Parallels has to run from within OS X, but some people have had success running Windows off of an external drive. I have not tried it, but the instructions can be found HERE.

  • Just installed mac osx snow leopard upgrade and connected my printer to it too, and realized I have no sound anymore

Just installed mac osx snow leopard upgade and connected my printer too, and realized I have lost sound!   Can anyone help?

In case I misunderstood, did you mean that the 10.6.3 version of Snow Leopard was the upgrade?  If so you need to update via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8.  These updates can correct minor system upsets.
And ... did you also repair permissions both before and after you upgraded.   You should do this when you progress via 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 too.

  • Emac freezes on mac osx screen after upgrade

I recently bought the new keyboard and downloaded the upgrade through the apple website. My System update started at the same time and it upgraded the most recent iphoto and osx powerpc update. Im running tiger on my emac and it was fine till I re-started. When it starts back up, the screen goes to the screen with the grey apple and then proceeds to the screen where the chrome mac osx is about to start up but it just sits there. I tried booting up with safe mode but it doesn't do anything and I tried starting it up doing the shift/command/option/delete and that doesn't do anything as well.
Did any of the updates cause this problem and if so, how do I get into my computer to fix this if it won't let me in with all the reboot options. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    M

Same boat as miQ: This eMac (1.42GHz, 512MB RAM) hangs at blue screen after Apple logo/gear and before startup progress bar. Tried reformat/zero then install Panther, but machine will not boot from Panther install disk (produces broken Apple logo and hangs). Erase/reformat and install Tiger = OK, but machine only boots in SafeMode (normal boot = blue screen). Started with 10.4.0 and updated to 10.4.11 by restarting in SafeMode with updates, no change. Disk Utility = all good (in SafeMode).
Lost audio somewhere along the way, too: No startup tone, Sound Prefs say no output device detected, mute is checked and unavailable, sound menu vanishes from menubar when clicked. (Speakers are built-in and connected, just as they were when we started.)
Boots in SafeMode, works as expected, but normal startup hangs at blue screen, 100% of the time. While 512MB RAM isn't much these days (2x256 verified), it should be enough for a fresh install and OS only, no? Firmware issue? (Won't boot from Panther or OS9.) Boots into Startup Manager (w/option key) and shows internal HDD: Then, Apple logo, gear, and blue screen, as usual. Goes to sleep eventually, then refuses to wake. Logic board? Sure acts like a software issue.....
Any suggestions/ideas/clues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

On 22 July Firefox was upgraded on my Mac using OSX. This morning 23 July I cannot access my Virgin Cable email properly. Virgin email was upgraded in early 2010 but I can now only access 3 emails dated 19th May 2010 showing the old style email format. Safari is OK and accesses the email correctly. I have reinstalled Firefox this morning using Safari but the problem still occurs.

Yes, it will do no harm, but it is meant for trouble shooting and you should not have to use it all the time.

  • Mac osx cannot be installed on this computer

Hello everyone hopefully someone can help me out here. I recently purchased a mid to late 2008 macbook pro13 for my wife. the person I bought it from got it with gingerbread installed on it. the original mac os seems to be there. I cannot get it to boot into anything other than gingerbread. So I bought a set of Snow Leopard 10.6.2 build number 2z691-6317-a from eBay and when I went to install them last night I got the error listed above. What can I do to get this back to OSX. My wife doesn't like gingerbread. Thanks for your help.

you need to boot to the OS install disc (by inserting the disc then restart holding down the C key)
once booted to this select the disk utility and then mac HD from the left side
click on the erase tab then make sure the format says mac OS extended journaled
then click on the erase button
once this is done close the disk utility window and choose the option to install mac OS X if you have 2 discs once the first one is done insert the second and install those apps as well.
after the reinstall is completed when the mac is restarted the setup assistant will appear and it will be like new mac

Here is the error message I get during the upgrade, using the Combo Updater, from 10.3 to 10.3.9

Some languages are not installed (i.e. Asian Language Support) as everytime I try to do a basic installation with those languages installed it fails out with errors from the Asian Language Support.
I can get a very base installation of MAC OS 10.3 installed, booted into the desktop, and update six of the applications from the auto updater. However, I cannot update the OS to 10.3.9.
I have been getting help from a nice Mac user, but he is even baffled at this point. So any insight to fixing this issue would help.
Yes I have ran Repair Disk, Verify Disk, Repair Permissions.
    Thank You
Apple/Mac Leary (really it is David)

    David:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you ran Repair Disk in Disk Utility, did you notice whether the S.M.A.R.T Status (at the bottom of the main pane) read Verified? I am wondering if you are having issues with the HDD itself.
My suggestion that you make a good backup of everything you don't want to lose, then do a complete reformat, zero all data to spare out bad blocks, and re-install. Here's how:
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pulldown menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select the a volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    Select on Security Options button.
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install BSD subsystems.
    Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
    After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    Connect to Internet.
Download and install 10.3.9 Combo Update
    Restart computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer...help?

I have an older mac book (2007) with a 2ghz Intel dual core with 2 gb ram.  I would like to erase the current OSX (10.5.8) and install Snow Leopard (10.6.X) from a disk that I have from my iMac.  When I put the disk in and boot, holding down "c" it goes to install but then gives me the error message that it can't be install on this computer.  Any suggestions or explanations?

It will not install - the Snow Leopard installer you're trying to use is machine specific - you need to go to Apple's website and order the Retail version of Snow Leopard in order to install it to your Macbook.
There is no work around on this since the Gray/Grey Snow Leopard DVD will be looking for an iMac and not a Macbook.

  • I have a mac osx and want to use a magic jack without the computer on all the time.

I am trying to use a magic jack plus without plugging into my mac.  (It will work plugged directly into the computer but I bought it so I would not have to keep my mac on all the time to use the phone).
What do I need to get a separate modem.  I am on air port express (an old one)

It appears that Magic Jack installs software on your system that it needs to run. Look at some of the threads in "More Like This" on the righthand side of this page or look here:
