Mac OSX file format questions

I am using Quicken 2005 and these days I backup my accounts to my USB flash drive. In the past i backed up to zip disk or floppy. backing up to a floppy would be problematic since the Mac version has never supported multiple disk backup which the PC version even to this day still supports. And besides floppy disk access has always been slower and more problematic on the Mac for some reason.
Okay here is my question.
My quicken files end with a Backup-file.qdfm extension.
But whenever I upload these files (sadly they have to be dragged an dropped with Fetch) they appear as a folder on my FTP server. So I have been using the classic version of Transmit instead of the native OSX version of Fetch to upload my Quicken backup accounts.
My question if I ever had a major disaster (this has happened before) would the folder (what it appears to be) on my FTP server save me or should I be zipping this quicken file before I upload? I have been using Quicken since 1998 for the Mac and PC, and have thousands of bank transactions that are valuable and that I do not want to lose.
Encase you cannot understand what I mean here is a screen shot. The file above is the Quicken 2006 file, and the one below is a older Quicken 2001 file that I uploaded when I had my Performa.

Thank you,
John

One way to know for sure would be to download the file (folder) and open it in Quicken. Of course I would make and keep a backup on your local drive before doing this.
Like you I have been using Quicken for many years but I back mine up to another hard drive, then I back everything on it up on a regular basis to a CD. I also use .Mac and the backup program included with it to back up my Quicken files off site. The .Mac solution is automatic, and takes place daily which is nice.
"But whenever I upload these files (sadly they have to be dragged an dropped with Fetch)'
Do you want to automate the process? If so, that is what Automator and Applescript are for. Surely you could write a simple script to do it for you.

  • Mac OSX Expanding & Format Question

When I originally ordered my Mac Pro 2 years ago, I ordered it with only the standard 250gb drive.
As many know, the MP only has 4 internal SATA drive bays, and I want to maximize my space for future content so I will put in 4 1TB drives, with the idea of having the primary 1TB drive partitioned for the Mac operating system (the other partition will be for applications and documents). The other three drives will be for (1) music, (2) pictures, and (3) video.
I have an offsite backup solution for all of my media files, so Time Machine will only be backing the operating system files to an external USB drive. (and offsite will also backup Time Machine stored on the USB drive)
What is the most efficient way of making the switch to a new hardrive with all my files? Is their someway I can use time machine to mirror it onto the new drive without having to reformat and start from scratch?
Anyone know of a good way to do this? Is this even a good idea?

As many know, the MP only has 4 internal SATA drive bays
Only? The previous Power Mac G5 ONLY had 2...
So if you are replacing the current 250GB drive, the easiest way is to install the first 1TB drive in the second slot. Download +Carbon Copy Cloner+ or SuperDuper. Run either of those utilities to clone the 250GB drive to the 1TB drive.
When that process completes, run System Preferences Startup pane to select the 1TB drive for startup, and restart. After making sure it is running as expected, you can swap the 250GB drive with the 1TB drive, and install the other 1TB drives.
You can use the Time Machine archive. But for duplicating your current drive as it is right now (no need to go back to a previous state), a cloning utility is more efficient.
If you want to save a few bucks, you should just keep the 250GB drive and add 3 1TB drives. 250GB is plenty of space for your system, apps, and basic docs.

  • .AVI file format question

Upgrading from CS2 to Photoshop CS5
I found out after the fact that in order to edit video you need CS5 Extended.
So, I then went and returned regular and upgraded to Photoshop CS5 extended.
(See my other thread for details, but installing the 12.01 patch is not an option at this time.)
Try to use file open to open a .AVI file from one of my cameras and get a message of "unrecognized file format".
Was able to import the 7 second video into layers.
Checked support issues, and installed Quicktime 7.6.8
Also, due to 12.01 issues, reinstalled Photoshop CS5 Extended AFTER upgraded Quicktime to 7.6.8
Machine specs:  Toshiba Satellite P30  Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.60 GHZ (Hyperthreading Dual Core) 2GB RAM ATI Mobility Radeon X600 Win XP Professional SP3 About 12 GB disk space available at install time.
Note that Quicktime will open the .AVI file in question with no problems, as well as Roxio software (trying to get rid of that with CS5)

I talked to support via phone and it appears the the problem is in installation.  The install of CS5 extended did not take over the regular install.  So, I need to start by completely uninstalling AGAIN and installed extended from scratch AGAIN.
I did try the program mention GSPOT as well.  It says AVI codecs are installed on the machine inquestion.  I will get more informaiton tonight afte rI do the re-install and see what happens.

  • File format question h264  /Blurry MPEG 4 output

"The codec with the best quality to size ratio is H264" was suggested for me to use when making web movies. This may be a stupid question, but is tehre any other file format (other then MPEG 4) that will play on an iPod and other digital media players. My Mpeg4 looks blurry and I really don't know why. I input h264 video into iMovie/ FC Express and the edit. When I export to MPEG 4 the video is blurry. I am only going down in physical size so pixelation is not the issue..(i think).

You see aac and h.264 are not editing formats in the FCP world. Easiest is to convert them first. It's very easy. Go get a copy of MPEGStreamclip and convert them to something useable, like ProRes LT. Then just import them, and drop one into a timeline and let the timeline adjust to the footage. You do not have to setup one of the easy settings in order to work.

  • Mac OSX file copy to Windows Share folder permissions

We'd got a few Mac's, one is snow leopard and the other is Lion.  The scenario is:
    Mac:
Go > Connect to server > smb://servernamehere > Connect > select your share
The authentication box then pops up, they've been typing in a username and password to connect to Server 2008 (Active Directory here by the way).  I don't think it matters if they type in "DOMAIN\username" and the password or just "username" and the password.
They try to copy files around but they get this wacky -xx number and their Macs lock up.
On the Windows Server Side I look at the folder permissions and the users they're using are all golden, full permissions.  I look at a test folder I create and it too looks good.
    The weird thing is this:
If I look at the folders on Windows it looks normal but if I open the command line on a Mac, do:
    cd /
    cd Volumes
    ls
    cd Folder_I'm_Connected_To
    ls -la | grep testfolder_I_made
    I get these results...
drwx------ 1 Their_Username_Here  staff  --> Some other stuff here like a folder size, date, time and the folder name
My question is this I guess.
Do I have to join these Macs to the Windows domain for the permissions and folder views on the Mac to look right AND to have them funtion properly?  The user of the other Mac says she never types in any authentication stuff, she just clicks a folder shortcut on her Mac ans she's in.
I would expect the permissions to at least say something like:
    drwxdrwx---
The Windows server doesn't have the group "staff" which makes it seem the Mac isn't looking at the mounted volume in the same way Windows is.  They also had this problem on AFP and SMB shares directly on a FreeNAS box which is also BSD like a Mac.
As a result of the Macs behaving similarly on both Windows and BSD (FreeNAS) I think this seems to be some wacky Mac behavior and I just can't figure it out.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Hi, same results at the terminal command on a SMB share, observed here with mac computers running with OsX 10.8 with Windows 2008 R2 SMB shares. My issue is that theses computers need to copy files on theses shares with Chronosync or Carbon Copy and this is not working due to an "modify file attributes permissions" error. But if I copy the files using "Finder" it works great.
You don't need to join your computers to your domain to get it to work. The error that you are talking about is the -5000 error ???

  • Mac mini file server question...

I would like to configure my mac mini G4 as a file server using the current OS X Tiger operation system. Basically I will use another computer as the web server and have the mac mini host the files for it.
Any recommendations or restraints for doing this? Do I have to worry about the Mac Mini going to sleep mode? Can OS X handle this kind of operation?
    Thank you for your help

Yes my Mini is running the latest version of OSX. I also run Windows XP, Vista beta, Linux: PCLinux & Ubuntu on it through Parallels. I have zero problems between Mac & Linux. The only thing I'd recommend is depending what OSes you're working with you might want to partition and set-up a common FAT32 area. I know Linux can't write to NTFS (tho Xandros 4 can) and Windows doesn't like the Mac drive system much. So FAT32 is the common file system all operating systems can read/write to fine. Overall I don't foresee you having any real problems.

  • From mac to windows, formatting questions

Hey, I need some help from anyone who knows how to search an ipod for salvagable material. My ipod was originally formatted to mac, and i went to italy over the summer, and had lots of photos and videos on my comp. Being relatively new to the whole ipod business, i tried to connect to a windows to try to send some pics in an email. It started to reformat, but then i realized what a moron I was, and so i unplugged it before it was complete. Macs will no longer recognize the ipod, but when i plug into a windows, it says there is damaged software that needs to be repaired. Also, even though i reformatted, there are still about 100 folders on the ipod, which most likely represent the diff artists, and there are various files at the end, which most likely represent the photos, though it says that the folders are empty. However, I have tried using ipod salvage, and other recovery software from my mac, but they don't recover any files, in fact they never even finish searching. Do I have to run the program from a windows based computer so that it is automatically in that format? Are tehre any suggestions as to what i can do to salvage the files? Thanks for any help

    Hi Lisa,
Yes there is. That's not so easy, but if you follow this instructions carefully it will be transfered successfully.

  • File format question

can anyone explain the differences in a swf file, a gif file, and a svg file? when would you use one over the other and which is smallest? I get confused about these. Will all of these take transparencies? Thanx for any help.
    red

Well, this question cannot be answered easily. It all depends on specific use cases. Let's see:
GIF - Bitmap format. Limited to max. 256 colors. One of those colors may be tagged to be interpreted as transparent by browsers and image viewers. May contain animation by ways of separate, discrete frames. The color palette is distributed to the animation, hence the more differnt colors are used, the more dithering will occur and the uglier it looks. als file size increases considerably, the longer the animation.
SWF - Flash container file. Objects embedded are treated "as is", meaning they are animated procedurally while the file plays. The objects themselves can be pixel images, movie clips, vector art or Flash-internal parametric items. No limitations in color palette or duration, file size only increases the more objects are used. Since the animation must be calculated in realtime during playback, variations in speed may occur, depending on the machine performance.
SVG - Vector based. May contain animation. Rendered on the target device, hence simialr rules as with SWF apply. Support in browsers however is very limited, so it is not widely used. Primarily used on mobile phones for icons and graphic elements (SVG tiny)

  • Flash for Mac "Quicktime Video" format question

I used Mac to create a video in Flash 8.0. When I export the
clip, i used "Quicktime Video" format (not the "Quicktime" option).
But when I play the file in Windows, I couldn't get it to open or
convert to other formats such as .AVI. Is there a codec for
"Quicktime Video" to work under windows XP? Please help.
    Thanks.

Hi s2foster2, well I am certainly willing to try to help you, just don't know if I can be much help because I am not very
familiar with Mac. I was able to help a couple of people but that was due to them being able to send me screenshots.
I understand Flash Player but where programs, add ons, ActiveX Controls, even where the Flash files are located I don't know. I do know Mac has a Library:-)
Some new information has come to light tonight however, by one of our most helpful people on the forum. This was about
    the 3rd party content, etc.
I looked at your FF add ons and you have the SWF and it's correct. Do you know where the Flash files are and could you
post back all of the Flash files with version numbers? That will tell me if Flash Player is installed with the correct files.
We can have a go at this if you want. I can tell you what info I need as long as you know where to find it, because I don't.
    Let me know,
    thanks,

  • Reinstall Mac OsX after format in Windows

Hi guys. I have a weird situation on my Macbook pro retina. After i got my MBPr i had OS mountain lion installed on the machine. I come from Windows based computers so i needed my Windows installed. I installed Windows through boot camp and after a while i realised that i don't use Mac Os , it had some scrooling lag in web pages, and i was not used to that so i only used windows. As i have only 512 GB hdd i wanted to take advantage of the remaining space so i formated the partition which had mac os installed on. But now i  want to give mac os antoher go with the new Mavericks coming soon. Can i install Mac Os back on that partition and still keep my windows going without having to reinstall it through boot camp. If so how can i do it. Here is a link with my partitions:
I want Mac Os back on partition Files (D:) 50.29 GB.
    Thanks,

At this point no you can't. You'll have to repartition the complete drive as one partition, install OS X Mt Lion and then if you like reinstall Windows using Boot Camp. You can make a backup of your Windows install with a program called WinClone then reload that after you reinstall OS X.
Or you can install OS X on an external drive and test it out again. Maverick won't change how OS X works. It will just add feature and better support for certain things.

  • Mac OSX File/Path equivalence testing

    Dear Java Guru's,
I've been wracking my brain on this for a few days, and I'm sure there has to be a simple solution to this problem:
In my Java Mac application, I've got two paths to deal with - "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users" and "/Users". Now, I know these both point to the same folder but, is there any way to compare these two paths and determine their equivalence from my Java SE 1.6 application?
    Many Thanks,
    - Zep

Thanks for the response baftos, you are absolutely right and that is exactly what I needed.
File.getCanonicalFile in the example above will return "/Users" for both which solves my problem.
    Thanks,

  • MAC OSX Tiger iLife Question

I just installed Tiger and so far everything is going great. I just wanted to know if the following applications were/are available to me after I installed Tiger.
    iLife, iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, GarageBand.
It shows these applications in the manual towards the end of the booklet, but I cannot seem to find them in the applications on my MAC..
I was wondering if anyone could help me because I had iDVD, iphoto when I first got my mac..
    Thanks,

Hey Klaus Thanks for your reply. Oh so my original OSX disks that came with my mac would have the older versions of the iLife, iphoto, idvd, imovie. Now if I were to re-install these applications, would I be able to update them using the updates feature in mac? And if I dont have the original operating system disk, could I just download them from the apple website?
    Thanks again,

  • Write to text file formatting questions

Apologies if I am touching on a subject discussed elsewhere.  I have two issues, which I believe to be related, that I am having difficulty overcoming.  I am collecting voltage date, converting it to a temperature, and then writing the time stamp, temperature, excitation voltage, and original voltage to file.  Currently, when I write these values to file the date and time appear on one line, the temperature and voltages appear on the following line, and then there is a space before the pattern repeats.  Furthermore, before data is collected I write information to a header, and if you look at the attached .csv file, you'll see that the data is all offset one column to the left.  Any ideas how I can solve this problem?  My code probably speaks for itself, but I am very much a novice so any general insight in non-jargon terminology will be humbly accepted.  Cheers, Peter.

Your problem is where you are building your data line.  Why are you using Build Array and then Inster into Array?  You don't want arrays when writing to the text file.  Each element of an array will be a different line.  What you really want is Concatinate String.  Use the Concatinate String to build a string with your timestamp, a comma, and your "spreadsheet string" that contains your data.

  • CAP File format questions !!!

I've been trying to parse CAP files, but having trouble figuring out these values...
In Method component: what is the number of elements in "method_info methods[]" array???
in method_info: what is the size of bytecodes[] array???
in type_descriptor_info: what is the number of elements in type_desc[] array???
    many thanks

See the JCVM Specifications, the size of the structure arrays u have mentioned is not specified. If you parse these files u can do it with the help of Reference location component. If you use the pointers in C it will be easy as compared to Java.
