MAC OSX for Engineering

Hi,
Apple's marketing says: OSX Lion the most advanced operating system. I agree for its features, but I'd like to use it in many processes. People can't develop productivity to have a good tool.
I consider that it's essential that Apple encourage developers to work in Software, for apllications which focus on some professional fields.
It's a great step that Autocad has started to develop software for MAC, but the transference isn't complete.
I am a Civil Engineer, and there's a very important work for engineering. About Structural Analysis, the market offers products like SAP2000, ETABS, Robot Structural Analysis, SAFE, CSI COL, etc. Also software for transportation design: Civil3D. For channels and pipes design. All of them are only available for Windows.
I don't know other fields to talk about, but it's true, professionals feel forgotten by Apple.
Greetings,
Isai Fernández
PD. I'm sorry for my poor English.

Are you an Engineer Etresoft?
Yes. I do satellites. Big ones. If I screw something up, Congress asks what happened.
Did you ever contact companies like Autodesk or CSI to try to get an answer from them or to be heard?
Kind of. I contact my vendors if I discover a problem that I can't work around and need or want a fix. If it is something I can't fix on my own, it is going to be pretty tough to track down. I always try to find the exact cause of the problem whenever possible. However, I can't recall ever contacting any vendor just "to be heard". They know they are providing a valuable product if I, and other engineers, keep buying it. Just because I find one particular problem doesn't mean the product isn't useful to me or other engineers.
Also consider that AutoCAD, ETABS and SAP2000 is not couple of tools, is THE TOOLS for Engineers and this topic is for Engineers.
I think you are the one that needs to gain some experience. If those are the only tools you use, then you are not "an engineer", but an AutoCAD/ETABS/SAP2000 user. What did such "engineers" do before those tools existed?
There are many different kinds of engineers. You are only talking about civil engineering. And I have to tell you, among other engineers, civil engineering is not one of the more respected domains.

Yes, it's icloud's storage you will be expanding.  All devices logged into an account will be able to use that storage.

  • Where to install Thunderbird on Mac OSX for multiple users.

    Hello,
I would like to install the email program Mozilla Thunderbird on my Mac OSX (10.4.6) computer which is set up with several different user accounts. I am not sure where to install it so that everyone may be able to use it. I would like to install it once so that everyone may use it rather than installing it multiple times (once for each user).
As you might already know, in Mac OSX when you install a program in the main applications folder, it is available for everyone who uses the computer (available to all accounts). However, the trouble is, that although the actual Thunderbird program is available to all users the profile is not. The profile obviously is an important component of the Thunderbird mail program as it contains all the actual mail messages. When Thunderbird is installed, by default the profile folder is placed in the users home Library folder at:
    users home folder/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/<Profile name>/
This location make it impossible for other users to access the profile and therefore Thunderbird will not work for the other users.
    What should I do?
I have a couple solutions, however I would like to ask for some advice on what others do in this situation which I am sure is fairly common.
    Here are my solutions:
    1. Move the profile folder to a custom location that is accessible by all users in OSX such as the global Library folder (rather than the user's Library folder). Path of global Library folder:
    /library/
Then let Thunderbird know it was moved to this custom location using Thunderbird's profile manager.
    2. Try to figure out a way in mac OSX that allows the profile folder at this default location:
    users home folder/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/<Profile name>/
to be accessible by all users.
Ownership and permissions need to be changed for the profile folder maybe?
    3. Install thunderbird multiple times - once for each user - each with their own profile. The problem with this is then there will be multiple installations of the same program and they will not be able to share the same profile folder - which is what I would like to do - if possible.
I have a feeling that solution 1 is the more logical solution.
PS I am using Mac OS 10.4.6 (Tiger) with Thunderbird 1.5.0.4
    Thanks for any advice.

Yup, its me again Always seem to have a question for the group
Thanks Mulder and Scott! I am sure glad I asked for your advice. I am completely new to the multi-user environment of OSX - as you can tell. (I guess I am still in OS9 thinking mode where there was only one user.)
    Scott wrote:
"Mail can be configured to download any new email, but not remove it from the server until it is removed from the Mail application. This way, the email can be downloaded to multiple clients across multiple accounts."
Interesting. Thanks for pointing this out Scott. Good to know. This would seem to me to be similar to IMAP in some ways. This would be a good way to work in a multi-user environment. This is good info to be aware of.
It sounds like an interesting way to work.
Thanks to both of you for steering me aware from the difficulty of attempting to place the profile folder outside the home directory. This sounds like it would have been more work than necessary.
Why am I not using Apple's Mail program? Good question. I thought I would try out Thunderbird for a while - and maybe switch to Apple Mail later - just to see which one I prefer. I am a web developer and I have always liked the open source community and I thought it would be beneficial for me to become as familiar as possible with all the Mozilla products (Firefox and Thunderbird). As well, it keeps me somewhat on the same wavelength as my PC friends, of whom many use this program too. I don't want to be too much out of touch with my mac. I might try Mail later. Thunderbird has been great so far. It has excellent spam recognition abilities and you can train it too to detect spam.
Scott the "Family account" idea is an awesome idea. Thanks.
I have learned a lot from this post. This gives me a few logical solutions. As Mulder points out it is best to keep users' profiles separate. This makes it simpler. Excellent advice. I could still install the Thunderbird application in the global application folder and then each user account can open this Thunderbird application from their own account and configure the mail client with their own profile. All users will be using the same Thunderbird application but with their own profiles. Yes, thats it. I tried this out and it seems to work now - didn't seem to work earlier because I didn't know what I was doing
Another idea could be, if I really need to share one single profile, would be to follow Scotts advice and just set up a "Family account". Very simple solution. Nice idea.
So, those are the two top solutions.
Furthermore, I could use a mix of both strategies. For mail accounts that could be shared ([email protected]) I could create a "Family account" in OSX, as Scott detailed above, and then for mail accounts that are for each individual user ([email protected]), I could be sure they have separate profiles as detailed in Mulder's post.
Thanks for all these helpful ideas!

  • Mac OSX for the 13-inch Early 2011 Thunderbolt 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 model.

I got a refurb MacBook Pro two days ago.
It is the 13-inch Early 2011 Thunderbolt 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 model.
It came from Apple with Mac OSX 10.7.1 Lion installed on it (and no media on disks).
According to EveryMac.com this model originally shipped with Mac OSX 10.6.6
The "Whats in the box" lists the software on DVD as one of the parts that should have been included but there was no disk with the MacBook.
Was there or wasn't there an actual software install media disk for this model ??
The fan runs at about 2000 rpm all the time.
    Is this normal ??
    Mike

10.7 Lion doesn't have disks, but a Recovery Partition accessible by holding command and r keys upon booting.
You need a internet connection, fast, strong and relaible to download Lion from Apple servers.
Since that machine came with Snow Leopard originally, you can call Apple with your serial number (AppleMenu > About this Mac > More info) and request new copies of the 10.6.x grey disks.

  • Installing Mac OSX for first time, can't open drive

Help! I'm desperate. I just purchased a twin to my Power Mac G4 from a reseller on eBay, but it has no operating system. I have an OSX disc to install, but how do I get the drive open to insert the install disc?
My original machine is wonderful, but I bought it from the Apple Store, and I think the OS was pre-installed, so this is new to me.
Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Boot the system with the Option key held down. When the cursor changes to an arrow, use ⌘. (Command-Period) to open the optical drive, insert the disk, close the drive with ⌘. and click the curved arrow to make it look for the new disk. When the cursor changes to the arrow, select the install disk and click the straight, right-opinting, arrow to boot from the install disk.

  • Failure negotiating credentials from MAC-OSX for RemoteDesktop

The remotedesktop client was working fine on my Mac before I upgraded to OSX Maverix. Following the upgrade to OSX, it stopped working. So upgraded to  Version 8.0.24308 which is the latest
available version. At this point, remote-desktop fails in the step "Negotiating Credentials". However, I'm able to use the CoRD app to remotely connect to the same destination host. Checked the firewall logs on the remote host - these packets are
not being blocked. And the fact that other remote-desktop clients to the same destination machine work fine (from my MAC), and that I can connect to the destination host from multiple Windows machines, indicates the settings on the remote machine is fine.
Any help with this would be great. The following are the relevant parts of the log from the remote-desktop-app

    Hi Jeremy,
I have the same issue, though slightly different trace log.  I have uninstalled and re-installed MS Remote Desktop several times, and used two different "complete"uninstallers to do it.  I still get the same problem.
    I'm on OS X Mavericks 10.9.2
Can you give me some guidance about this file?  It doesn't show up when I do an uninstall, nor can I find it with Spotlight.

  • What is the latest mac osx for my macbook

i'm using an old macbook from 2007 can you help me

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, follow the Core Duo instructions, open the Mac App Store, and try purchasing Mountain Lion. If you get told it's incompatible, phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion.

  • Creative Cloud on Mac OSX and Windows Bootcamp on the same machine.

    Hello,
I am looking into getting 3DStudio Max which is a Windows only program but will need to flip flop between 3DSM and Photoshop.  I am wondering, can I install my Adobe apps on both Operating Systems so that I can have them on my regular Mac OSX for normal work and in Windows Bootcamp for when I do 3D renderings?  I rather not use a Virtual Machine considering both of those programs are going to take a lot of RAM already.  Adding another program to that mix I feel will just overheat/slow down my machine.
Thank you for your thoughts and time,
    Sarah

that's interesting.  it may be a problem, but give it a try.
just open your bootcamp windows, navigate to https://creative.adobe.com/ and start downloading ps.  a cc desktop app will download to your bootcamp windows and hopefully you ps will work on your bootcamp windows.  i don't see any reason why it would stop working your mac, but that will count as your two installations so you will not be able to install on another computer.

Follow Duane's instructions to the tech library. I also highly recommend that people buy an advanced disk repair tool like DiskWarrior or TechTools Pro. It makes recovering from common disk problems a snap.
You run the software from the CD which also contains system start up files on it so it can diagnose and repair many disk problems after they've happened...keeping you from a trip to the Apple Store.
It's also a good idea to repair disk permissions frequently. Programs like Cocktail allow you to do this by setting up a timed event.

I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

It is now confirmed  that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

    Hello,
It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • Vmware Fusion Beta for Mac OSX Released Today

I don't know if this is the correct forum; if it's not, please pardon me.
VMware Fusion Beta for Mac OSX has been released today. This product, while the developers admit has some bugs in it, promises to make virtual computing a whole lot easier and would eliminate for many (not all) the need to use Boot Camp. The link for this new program is http://www.vmware.com/products/beta/fusion/
On that page you can find links for support and forums as well.
If you need a free virtual appliance to use with Fusion, then use this link http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/
Currently, there is no charge for using the BETA program. The VMWare folks are asking people to give feedback on their use of the product.
This is what we've been waiting for to purchase our new MAC. I can say without a doubt that from my own experience with Linux boxes, VMWare is the best virtual solution on the market. It's easy to configure and supports a wide variety of hardware and OSs. I can even move the virtual machines I created under Linux to my new MAC when I receive it.
The time has finally dawned for me to retire the last remaining pc towerbox in my home. My wife and I recently expunged one of those machines earlier this week and are eagerly looking forward to getting rid of the other one.
We am really looking forward to purchasing the new Mac Pro. What makes it especially appealing for us is it's scalability and the fact that we can use our current hardware, including our Kensington Track Ball mouse and current monitor with it, although we are taking a serious look at a new Apple Display as well.
Many thanks to everyone for taking the time to read this post. I am looking forward to joining and my wife is looking forward to rejoining the MAC community.
