Mac OSX install disc 1 won't work, it says "no bootable device" and a black screen

My macbook came already with snow leopard, so I have the osx install disc and the applications install disc. So I'm meant to put in the osx (ie install disc 1) install disc which lets me install bootcamp, which I do, and click on "start the windows installer" and "start installation" in bootcamp assistant, however every time I restart the computer to try installing bootcamp it just says in white letters across a black screen "no bootable device" and "insert boot disc", which I have already done!!
Am I missing something really dumb here, or is my disc faulty?

From this guide
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_10.6.pdf
Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for WindowsAfter installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software forWindows using your Mac OS X installation disc.
The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1  Eject the Windows installation disc.
2  Insert the Mac OS X disc.
You have to be running your Windows OS (not Mac OSX) when you add the drivers from the Mac Install disk.

Hello, The Hatter, I read about the 'trick' of backing up, erasing, and restoring too, but I figured it would take longer than defragmenting the disk.
But the defragmentation process has just finished! so I'm gonna try to run Boot Camp again soon!
    Thanks for your helpfulness, anyway.
And P.S. I didn't clone my system onto the external drive, I just inserted the Mac OS X Install CD, rebooted holding down the "C" key, and installed a fresh Snow Leopard system onto the predetermined partition. I will use that in cases of emergency, when my main/internal system becomes unusable.

  • Original install disc won't work!

Hey all, I am trying to take my eMac back down to OSX 10.2, which is the original OSX that it came with when I bought it. It had tiger on it and I can not get the original install disc to boot when I try and do a restart while pressing "C". On startup, it goes to the screen that says "You computer needs to be restarted, press your on button for several seconds". So, I just used DBAN to completely wipe the HD, hoping that would help it, since maybe it was having trouble since tiger was still on there. The HD is now completely wiped blank and the disc still won't mount. I put in my Leopard disc just to see if that would work and it booted right up and was ready to start installing. Why won't the original disc work? The disc looks brand new, there are no scratches or anything like that on it. Any ideas? Thanks for any input!

I'd need to check notes i don't have with me at the moment, but if I recall correctly, part of the update from 10.2 to 10.4 on an eMac involved a firmware update, which could be why you can't boot to the 10.2 disc anymore.
Most OS 9 programs run fine under OS X 10.4 using Classic. You could try reinstalling 10.4, then put OS 9 on from your original 10.2 set of discs; the exact steps will depend on just which version of the discs you actually got. • Mac OSX Install Disc

    Dear Commnunitie,

Can i use the Install Disc of the imac, how can i now if the DVD are Generic, Solo or Family Install Disc
Can i install the Mac OSX on a second machine
    Already thanks  for your reply

No, install disks are machione specific. He will have to purchase an install disk:
If you are in the US call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.

  • Mac OSX install disc freezes!!!

Hi there, well when I try to install the Mac OS X. install disc 1 it freezes when it says "preparing installation.."
what can I do to solve this problem?
    help me please
    liz.

I have a new iBook. My install disk 1 seemed to read ok on my my internal drive but it had a hard time reading on my external drive. Disk 2 worked fine on both. I got a replacement install disk 1 from Apple and it reads fine on both drives. You probably have a bad DVD. If you try to install with the Tiger retail install disk the trackpad and airport will not work. To get the trackpad and airport to work update it with the 10.4.3 combo update.

  • Install discs won't work

I need to reinstall my iDVD app, so I inserted the original install discs, but when I do, the start spinning for a few seconds, then eject after three tries. Is there a problem with my install discs? Or do I need to do something?

Are those other discs CDs or DVDs?
If you can get use of that other Mac, use FireWire target disk mode...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Put the MBP Install DVD in the the other Mac, shut both down, connect with a Firewire cable, boot the other Mac holding the t key down, once the floating FW symbol shows up, boot the MBP holding the Option/alt key down, eventually the MBP's Install Disk will show as a Boot Option.

  • Cannot access boot from Mac OSX install Disc-frozen cursor

Twice a month I do some housekeeping and clean up my Mac--run scripts, verify preferences, repair permissions, etc. Quarterly I boot from the installation disc to renew any start up info that may have become corrupted.
My IMACG5 won't allow me to do this now. I put the disc in, and shut down the machine. I start it up again while holding down the C key but when it is finished booting from the disc my mouse cursor is frozen on the screen and I cannot acess anything. I have a battery operated mouse and I always check to make sure there is sufficient battery life.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is up and how I resolve this issue? At this point I won't be able to wipe my hard drive and re-boot everything fresh from my installaion discs because the cursor is frozen.

  • My firefox won't work; It says "unable to connect" and I have tried all of the tips for troubleshooting and it still wont' work.

Firefox opens up with an "unable to connect" message; it also says it cannot establish a connection to the server with these three bullets: 1) The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
    2) If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
    3) If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
I have tried to do all of the tips that you have on your website for troubleshooting and nothing seems to work. I know it is not my Internet connection because my roommates can get on Firefox without a problem and my Internet Explorer opens just fine.

If your iPad is defective and is still under warranty, you can take it to an Apple Authorized Repair Center and get it fixed.  If you are worried about a defective replacement, then a repair may be a better way to go.  <Apple Authorized Repair Centers>
Personally, I would prefer getting a replacement.  You read about many defects here in this forum, but they only represent a tiny percentage of all iPads sold.

  • Install disc won't re-install Leopard on my Macbook

So, I recently upgraded my Hard Drive in my Macbook. After I upgraded, I thought it would be cool to have Windows XP on my Mac also. So I partition 20 gb of my Hard Drive off for XP. I ran boot camp to install XP and I kept getting an error. This left me with an empty partition of 20 gb on my Hard Drive. I read many posts on here and I decided that the best thing to do was to re-install Leopard completely and start over, fresh and clean. Well, I put my Leopard install disc into my dvd drive, and when the install starts up, I get an error message that says, "Mac OS X can not be installed on this drive." Also, the install disc will not eject, even before the install starts. My hard drive is completely blank right now, and I have no idea why my install disc won't work. What should I do?

Open Disk Utility again (from the installer DVD), click on the drive's name as described in the previous post, & click the blue "i" button to get the disk's info. Copy that to a reply in this thread so we can see it. Or just note the "Partition Map Scheme" info, which should say "GUID Partition Table."
If not, you did not succeed in repartitioning it, perhaps because you did not click the "Apply" button or something.
If so, make sure you are using the installer disk that came with the MacBook & not some other model-specific installer disk.
BTW, you can never eject the DVD if you have started up the MacBook from it, so that much is normal behavior. To eject the DVD, you must restart from some other boot volume.

  • Can't boot from OSX Install disc.

    Hello,
I am trying to restore my iMac from a Time MAchine backup and to do that I remembered that I had to boot off of the OSX install disk and choose Disk Utility. I thought that restoring from timeMAchine would be the hard and long part, but I am having trouble booting off of the OSX disc.
1.) I popped it into my iMac and it mounts and loads. Its runs fine so I know there is nothing wrong with the disc.
2.) I restarted my iMac and held C.
3.) The grey screen appeard and then the Apple logo and then the spinning icon underneath it. But it gets stuck there and doesn't boot off of the disk.
4.) I shutdown the machine by holding the power-button and when it restarted I held D. It ran the hardware test fine and I passed the hardware test.
5.) I shut it down again, same way in four, and held option. This time I chose to boot form the Mac OS X Install DVD. It again got stuck at the Grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning icon.
Does anyone know how to or can help me get my iMac to boot from the OSX install disc or how I can use Disc Utility to restore my iMac from TimeMachine?
Thanks in Advance & Best Regards,
    theirf.

Sorry, OE = Original Equipment - the grey discs that came with your Mac.
    SL = Snow Leopard - Mac OS X 10.6.x.
    theirf wrote:
What do OE and SL mean?
I think i understand though. You mean that any disc with a higher version of something will still work on a machine with a lower version of that thing right?
Not any disc. The only grey ones that will work are those that came with that Mac.
Any retail disc of a later OS version will work, and in most cases it would boot from an external HD with a later OS installed.
However, as Snow Leopard only came on two retail versions, 10.6.0 and 10.6.3, the choice is a bit limited.
The current retail version is available here.

  • Software Install Disc Won't Boot

Please help, I found a Power Mac G4 that somebody had thrown away(M# 5183 450 MHz DP/2X1M Cache/128 MB Ram It has vertical sound ports and a AGP Card. Has the year 2000 on back) . It would not boot, I found a pinched wire on the power supply, now it boots with some version of X. But it is password protected, I want to wipe the drive and install an OS from an install disc I got off ebay(For a Power Mac G4 year 2000 SSW version 9.04 691-2739-A).
Now the fun begins. The CD will not boot with C depressed, I've tried resetting the PRAM, and sometimes I get a screen telling me to reboot and after I do the protected os will load. I tried booting with cmd-opt-O-F; this said I had a power mac 3,3 3.1f1 BootROM built on 6/28/00. Tried booting with options depressed it just shows me the drive I want to get rid of. Tried cmd-opt-shift-delete on startup nothing would load as long as the keys were down, the protected os loads when they are released. I also tried moving the jumpers on the hd from master to cable select.
Do I need an osX install disc to get rid of X ? any thoughts would be appreciated .
    G4   Mac OS 9.0.x

    Hi, macaraina -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Your G4 450MHz DP machine is a Gigabit Ethernet model. Those models originally shipped with a model-specific version of OS 9.0.4; later models may have shipped with OS 9.1.
I suspect the CD you got on eBay is not valid for your machine.
In addition, the version of Drive Setup that came with OS 9.0.4 and earlier had a defect - when used to format a drive as Mac OS Extended (which is the correct format for OS 9 and also valid for OSX), such as when wiping a drive, it can leave the drive vuknerable to getting a wrapper error.
Article #31056 - HFS Wrapper Partition Damaged
For those reasons, particularly the second one, I suggest you get either a retail OS 9.1 Install CD or a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD - either is suitable for your model. All retail OS 9 Install CDs those are white, with a large gold 9 on them; the retail OS 9 Install CD's have a universal installer; model-specific Install CD's do not.
You can often get retail OS 9 Install CD's in various versions at sites like these -

Pagemaker is ancient, obsolete and unsupported. It was discontinued over 10 years ago. (Though why it is still sold is a mystery.)
If you want to run PageMaker, your best bet is to use a Win2K or WinXP PC.
Otherwise move to Indesign or look at Serif's PagePlus or Scribus.

  • How to install windows support software without mac OSX install cd?

I want to install windows 7 on my macbook pro 10.6.8 via bootcamp. I have a windows 7 install cd and I havn't got past the stage of installing the windows support software. I lost my mac osx install cd a long time ago so I can't install the software that way, but if i try and download the support software from bootcamp, I keep getting a notification that the windows support software is unavailable. What should I do?

Call Apple for replacement disks.  The Boot Camp drivers for OSX 10.6 and earlier were not available as a download.  Or upgrade to Lion, which you do download the Boot Camp 4 drivers.
