Mac OSX just hangs/freezes, HELP!

Hello,
My DP 2.0ghz G5, keeps hanging/freezing, meaning I can't move the cursor, it won't respond, the music in the background just skips. I've already ran disk utility which gave the message that it had an invalid leaf record count (should be 0 instead of 527), which it could not fix. I've also ran hardware tests and everything seems okay. I've also narrowed it down to when it hangs. Whenever I have anytype of music or sound, it hangs almost immediately. Does anyone know what this could be?

It sounds like a directory problem. If you format and reinstall it'll almost certianly be repaired. That's just an absolute step for me. If you erase the drive it will erase the corrupt directory. Really DiskWarrior can probably fix it. It's the one utility I wouldn't live without,,,,it's that good. DW has saved my bacon many times.

In order to resolve the issue if it occurs again, more info would be helpful as to what occurred prior to the "hang." One potential fix would be to try a Safe Boot:
After the Mac is completely shut down, push the power button and immediately after the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
There should be a message that says "SafeBoot." After the Mac is completely booted, try restarting and see if the issue is gone.

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

  • Mac OSX Installer Hangs During Installation

    Macbook Pro 15"
    Core 2 Duo 2.53Ghz
    4Gb RAM
    9400M
    Erased Hard Disk,
    Boot from CD
Mac OSX installer hangs during installation
Time remaining remains the same for >3 hours
After clicking get spinny beachball cursor.
    What should I do?
    Thanks.

The installer may actually not be hunging, in my installation on Win XP, I have seen it "pause" at this point for 5 min or more before continuing with the installation to a successful completion, I did not try to do anything to assist it. Try giving it more time and see what happens.

  • Installing Mac OSX Server hangs at Network Configuration

    Hi there!
I am installing my new Mac OSX Server (SNow Leopard) straight forward the assistant.
    Asking for Language: OK
    Asking for Country: OK
    Keyboard Layout: OK
    Entering License: OK
    Configuring Network:
    Ethernet: Static
    Airport: OFF
    FireWire: OFF
Clicking on Forward to continue: The assistant keeps telling me "configuring network". Nothing happens. It is doing that for hours now.
I tried to connect with Server Admin tool: OK works.
The network is up and running, but the assistant is not continuing.
    Any ideas?
Thanks for any help or suggestion

Smells vaguely of a DNS error or IP routing or a network connectivity problem.
What did you specify for your network settings, and particularly what was entered for the DNS server address? If you're not running DNS on your local network here, then enter no DNS servers as part of the prompting, and let Mac OS X Server establish its own default single-host DNS.
(You're not going to be able to use your ISP DNS here; those ISP DNS servers are not valid when you are establishing a server on a network behind a NAT gateway.)
I'd probably wipe the disk and boot from DVD and reload.

  • Firefox 4 for the Mac OSX is hanging much too often and does not respond to the "QUIT" Command for a time, i dont know if this is just me, but im running Quad Core i5 2.6ghz and 8 GB RAM the Graphics card is the Macbook Pro factory one

this happens when the browser opens websites in tabs after a period of time, i dont know how the Hang occurs but FF4 is not secure enough for me, so i downgraded to FF3.6 just for stability.

  • Mac OSX install disc freezes!!!

Hi there, well when I try to install the Mac OS X. install disc 1 it freezes when it says "preparing installation.."
what can I do to solve this problem?
    help me please
    liz.

I have a new iBook. My install disk 1 seemed to read ok on my my internal drive but it had a hard time reading on my external drive. Disk 2 worked fine on both. I got a replacement install disk 1 from Apple and it reads fine on both drives. You probably have a bad DVD. If you try to install with the Tiger retail install disk the trackpad and airport will not work. To get the trackpad and airport to work update it with the 10.4.3 combo update.

  • I am trying to download Adobe Flash for Mac OSX 10.3.9-help!!!

I get it downloaded to desktop but that is as far as I can get.  I can't get it to open/run.  I'm a pretty basic computer user.  I wanted to download pictures to enter a contest and I need this to do so.  I know the computer is older but it works great, usually.  I'm sure it is the operator that is the issue.  Can anyone help me in simple, layman's words?

Hi, I will try to help you the best I can. We don't seem to have many Mac helpers on the forum. First, I need to ask is did you use the Uninstaller for Flash Player first to remove the old Flash Player files?
I know where that info is and I know where the info is for the Installer. Are you trying to Install the Flash Player vs 10.1.53.64?
Let me know that and are you sure that you downloaded and SAVED to your Desktop the Flash Player for your edition of Mac?
    Thanks,

  • Mac OS is connected to internet, but will not load webpages in any browser. Another Mac loads just fine. HELP!!!

My Macbook OS X 10.5.8 decided it didn't want to load any webpages anymore. I have tried both firefox and safari and get the same result. The tab will say connecting...but it never does. WHY!?!??!
I have four bars of WiFi connection.
Network diagnostics tests comes back "Connected" like there's no problem at all.
I have restarted my router and computer.
I have another Macbook Air that is connected just fine.
I have deleted and re-added the airport service.
I have renewed the DHCP Lease.
I have changed the router channel.
    I have tried everything!!
    Please help!

Nevermind, problem fixed.  After reading how to setup router with cable modem I realized I need to goto  main and clone router to cable modem.  I did that and problem was solved.

  • SYSTEM CRASHED BOOTED INTO MAC OSX BASE SYSTEM WEBKIT HELP!!!!

MY SYSTEM CRASHED AFTER AN UPDATE. RAN A BACK TRACE LOG BECAUSE A GREY SCREEN BOOTED UP WITH ONLY SAFARI INSIDE. BACK TRACE LOG SHOWED A WEBKIT SAFARI OS X INSTALLED AND HAVE PERMISSIONS OVER MY STARTUP DISK REPLACING IT WITH THEIR "MAC BASE OS X SYSTEM" AS WELL AS MY RECOVERY HD TOO. HOWEVER I AM ABLE TO GET INTO DISK UTIL AND REPAIRED MY HD AND RECOVERY HD HOWEVER THE OTHER IS STILL THERE AND WILL NOT LET ME ERASE IT. IT STATES IN INFO OF THE DRIVE "NOT ALLOW OWNERS TO TURN OFF...YES". I AM IN THE SAFARI BROWSER NOW AFTER LEAVING DISK UTIL. DISK UTIL READ MY HD IS FIXED AND OK AND WILL BOOT HOWEVER I AM SCARED IT WILL ONLY BOOT INTO WHATEVER THIS WEBKIT MAC OS X BASE IS.

That's Mt. Lion's Recovery volume which you could have used to erase the working volume and do a clean install of Mt. LIon.  To get rid of it you may have to try to repartition the entire drive with Disk Utility.
Otherwise, reboot with the Command+R keys held down to boot into the Recovery volume.  Once there run Disk Utility to again erase the working volume and then do an install of Mt. Lion. This method is much easier and quicker than doing it from the USB device.

  • Periodic System Hang/Freezing

About every 10mins or so, OSX just hangs. I can still move the mouse, but my clicks don't register. This hang lasts an average of 20 seconds. I'm wondering if my hard drive is the problem. Maybe it gets bottlenecked, or perhaps my FSB gets bottle necked. I'm using the latest MBP with all the latest updates.
Is any one getting this issues with the current model?

If you suspect your hard drive, back everything up and keep it backed up. Then download and run S.M.A.R.T. Utility:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. S.M.A.R.T. Utility will give you a detailed view of of the factors which determine the S.M.A.R.T. status, and may detect impending hard drive failure before it shows up in Disk Utility.
Freezing could also be software related. You could try a restart and see if this helps. You could create a new user account for test purposes and see if the problem persists. You could also reinstall the OS.
If the problem persists, you could try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code.
If nothing works, tell Apple. Your computer should not be freezing.
    Good luck!
