Mac OSX Server VPN Not Working

Heres how my setup is: I have an ATT DHCP Server/Router That assigns my public ip.
I have an Apple AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode Which hosts the main wifi connection.
I have my Mac OSX Server connected to the AirPort Extreme
On my ATT Router DHCP Server's Firewall I have my computer set to DMZ Plus mode which forwards all ports on the network to my mac.
I am trying to connect to the vpn network via my MacBook Pro and iPhone5 and I cannot. However I can connect to the online wiki page on my server by going to server.djswirkmke.com if you would like to see it. My host name is server.local on the network but on the internet it is server.djswirkmke.com I also have a mail domain setup as mail.djswirkmke.com. My problem is I am not able to connect to the vpn on the client computers can you please help?

In a moment of random frustration, I tried listing the DNS server in VPN settings three times, and it somehow fixed the problem. Even though it is the same IP all three times, it works when it is listed three times but not when it is listed just once.
In other words, in VPN > Settings > Client Information > DNS Servers, I have:
192.168.100.64
192.168.100.64
192.168.100.64
Hope this helps someone having the same problem.

  • Lion server VPN not working away from network

    Hey everyone,
So I have a mac mini setup with lion server, and setup a VPN, however after I setup the profile and installed it on my iphone and ipad, it worked great wile I was connected to the same network, but once I connect to either 3G or to a different network (than the server is based) it says,
"The L2TP-VPN server did not respond.  Try reconnecting.  If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your administrator."
I have check the port mapping settings, as I have a airport extreme and have the VPN setting checked for the extreme from the server app.  I have also disabled mobileme "back to my mac" on the computer, and also on the airport extreme just to make sure that wasn't causing the issue.  I'm out of ideas, I know it has to do with the incoming connection, and I have setup a dyndns for the ip address.  Any ideas would be really appriciated.

I also had the same issues but managed to fix it.
My airport extreme DHCP settings were conflicting with the VPN servers assigned addresses.
For example, the DHCP on the extreme was set to the range 10.0.1.200 - 10.0.1.254
And the VPN was set to the same range of 10.0.1.200 - 10.0.1.254
I then changed the DHCP range on the extreme to 10.0.1.100 - 10.0.1.229
and i set the VPN to give out IP addresses between 10.0.1.230 - 10.0.1.254
Reset both the extreme and VPN server, then boom. It started working, internally and externally.

  • OS X Server VPN not working

    Hi
I have had a problem when trying to set up the vpn service on os x server.  I use OS X Mountain Lion server.  The problem is that when I set up the vpn service in the server app, it won't let me connect to the vpn using my public ip address or outside my network.  It will work if I type in the IPV4 address of the server inside the network.  It just won't work outside the network.  I looked up the port number for OS X Server VPN and did the port-forwarding in the router.  Unless i have the port wrong (which is doubt),  why would this not be working.  I am using L2TP to connect to the server but I have also tried PPTP and that did not work either.  I think that the problem must be something with getting the vpn on the internet since it works perfectly fine inside the network.
    Thanks for any help.
    Michael

If you have a port-mirroring switch (I use a Netgear GS105E), it is very handy.
This is the typical configuration for a VPN. Let us assume L2TP.
VPN Client (L2TP) -> WAN Router/Firewall (Outside) -> LAN Port Forwarding (inside) -> VPN Server (LNS = OS X server).
You may not be able decrypt packets, but you can see outer headers. If the WAN Router/Gateway has port mirroring functions, you can watch incoming packets at the WAN Interface. The Router/Gateway should just forward packets to the designated Port/IP.
If the packets make it past the Router/Gateway,  the Server configuration should be checked. Temporarily, you can turn off the firewall and see if you can get to the OS X server. It will help in pinpointing where the issue might be. Shared secrets should also be checked.
If you are able to VPN from inside, it is a very strange configuration. Usually coming from inside to inside is not permitted.
If the clients and servers use the same intranet addresses, for example the client uses 192.168.x.x and the server is also on 192.168.x.x, you will run into issues. You may need to reserve address space for VPN clients.

  • Mac pro server spotlight not working

OSX 10.8.4 -  spotlight has stopped working for my end users. Not sure why. Nothing catastrophic has happened other than my having to re-initiate file sharing (turning the service back on) after a restart.
I've done disk util and repair with no issues there. I re-indexed by opening sys prefs / spotlight / privacy and dragged in several folders they access, then romoved them to initiate the re-indexing. This did not work either.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • How can I connect a pptp client TO my mac osx server vpn?

On my client it requires the following information:
    IP address of server: done
    Remote subnet: __________
    Remote subnet mask:__________
    MPPE encryption:___________
    MTU:______
    MRU:______
    NAT:______
    User: done
    Pass: done
I've looked up but I can only find I for for the mac as the client, in my case a dd wrt router is the client.
What belongs in the empty fields, or where can I find that info.

    What kind of DVD?
Unlikely that the file size would be suitable for email. How long is the DVD?

  • Mail, iCal Server and iChat server will not work over VPN

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station at the office running the network. Behind it sits a Mac Mini Snow Leopard server running 10.6.3. The ports necessary for Mail, iCal Server and iChat work fine through that external connection. I can also connect with VPN from my 10.6.3 clients.
HOWEVER, when I connect with the VPN clients, I am suddenly unable to access the Mail, iCal Server, Wiki server and iChat server. All connections time out. I can ping the server and I can do other things that do NOT work on the public Airport like ssh or VNC. ssh and VNC are closed at the airport extreme.
So it's pretty odd. When I'm connected via the VPN, all ports that are forwarded to the Snow Leopard server time out over the VPN.
I've tried various and sundry configurations with the VPN client. This includes trying to send all traffic over the VPN, moving it up in the service order, etc. etc. Nothing fixes it. DNS resolution is working fine, however when I do a wireshark capture of ppp0 traffic, I notice that SSL and TLSv1 handshakes appear to occur on the public IP address instead of the private network IP address... and they're all resets.
Has anyone gotten this to work successfully? Like I said, all ports that are NOT forwarded through the Airport work fine over the VPN, but will not work when connected to the VPN. It's really bizarre.

New data: any ports that are normally forwarded on the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini server will not work when connected to the VPN.
For instance, if I have imaps/993 forwarded from the Airport Extreme to the Mac Mini, it works fine over the Internet. If I connect to the VPN, I can connect to all OTHER services on the Mac Mini, but Mail, for instance, will not work.

  • Mac OSX server not supported behind Airport Extreme NAT router?!!

For a customer, I recently installed a new XServe, within a local network with an Airport Extreme (n) with FW 7.4.2. Mac OSX Server manages the router (which has a fixed IP from the ISP). Because the Mac OSX Server runs a DNS server (supporting a local domain), OSX Server reconfigured the Airport Extreme, so that it would forward DNS queries to the server. The server's dns server will forward queries for non-local domains to the ISP's dns servers.
All clients get their IP configuration using DHCP from the router. You can't use the DHCP service of the server, as you can't disable DHCP on the router (in NAT mode).
All clients get the router's IP as the dns server.
    HOWEVER:
The Airport Extreme can't connect to the internal DNS server! *It doesn't seem to be able to route dns requests to the internal network* (verified using nslookup). Any dns queries sent to the router will time out.
Come on, Airport Extreme team.. you can't claim the Airport Extreme to be the ideal router in combination with an OSX server, if this simple and very common setup is not supported! How hard can it be to either:
...*Allow us to disable DHCP on the router* (even when in NAT mode), so we can use the OSX server for this (which will dispatch the correct DNS settings)
...*Allow the router to route DNS queries to the local DNS* (OSX) server (which should be working anyway)

    That is true.

  • Not installing Mac OSX Server 10.5.4

    Hello Friends...
I purchased Mac OSX Server 10.5.4 Leopard DVD.
I would like to install and configure it.
According to the manual , its not working.
It is getting upgrade to my Mac mini 10.5.7.
After installing , it wants to restart. But, its not booting and getting always restarted.
So, any advices and suggestions from your side.
    Regards,
    Bhanu

I'm going to point you to these two places to see if you can resolve your issues:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2019706&tstart=300
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3479
Basically what happens is if you insert the Server install DVD and start the installer package, if the DVD will boot your Mini it will show the 'Restart' button. If it can't, the installer will run and then you should follow the instructions in the second link.
Given the fact that many have tried and failed with the second method, I would attach the Mini, in target disk mode, to another Intel-based machine and run the install from there with the Mini as the target. Then boot the other machine from the Mini's disk and let the Setup Assistant finish -don't configure any services on the server in this mode other than setting it up as standard or advanced, apply any updates and then restart. Then shutdown both machines, detach the Mini, then let it boot on its own and continue configuration from there. I've done this several times with both PPC and Intel-based machines with positive results.

  • Script won't run on machine w/MAC OSX Server 10.4.9

Why won't the following script work on a machine that is running MAC OSX Server 10.4.9. On Machines running Mac OS X 10.4.9 it works fine, but on my server machine it won't name the file as per the script--the menu dialog box pops ("save as") up asking for a file name.??
The only difference between the machines as far as I can tell is the OS.

  • FCE4 and OSX 10.5 not working?

Every time I try to log and transfer from my HG10, FCE4 crashes. I see that others have this working with 10.4 so I assume it's just another case of OSX 10.5 not working properly or are others having no problems?

Thanks Tom, I appreciate your trying to help but I'm a computer professional and I know that having a Windows server on the same network as my Mac is not going to cause a transcoder process to crash: I've used windows network drives for FCP scratch disks for many years with no problems. In this instance, I am trying the network drive as an alternative to the 'native' method as that's not working for me (i.e. log and transfer from the Canon HG10 HDD).
The system crashes about 2 seconds after placing the clip in the queue in the log and transfer window, which implies it's the transcoder process that's failing (it's a SIGSEGV always pointing to the same address which means a bad pointer in the code but this may be that it's making bad assumptions about the version of a library it's loaded).
I believe that preference files can become corrupt and cause badly written code to crash but I've deleted the ones highlighted in the previous post with no success - are there others I should be looking to delete? Is the transcode process actually QT or FCE itself?
[[ OT: I have had more problems with OSX 10.5.1 than I've ever had with any version of OSX (since 10.0): my wife's MacBook Pro has kernel panicked several times and she only uses iLife. Mine hasn't panicked but it has locked up a couple of times and applications crash randomly (although a lot less on 10.5.1 than 10.5). ]]
This is really frustrating as I investigated which camera and software to buy very carefully and I see that Apple even recommends the camera I bought (canon HG10) on it's online store when you select to buy FCE4 so it clearly should be working.

  • Installing Mac OSX Server hangs at Network Configuration

    Hi there!
I am installing my new Mac OSX Server (SNow Leopard) straight forward the assistant.
    Asking for Language: OK
    Asking for Country: OK
    Keyboard Layout: OK
    Entering License: OK
    Configuring Network:
    Ethernet: Static
    Airport: OFF
    FireWire: OFF
Clicking on Forward to continue: The assistant keeps telling me "configuring network". Nothing happens. It is doing that for hours now.
I tried to connect with Server Admin tool: OK works.
The network is up and running, but the assistant is not continuing.
    Any ideas?
Thanks for any help or suggestion

Smells vaguely of a DNS error or IP routing or a network connectivity problem.
What did you specify for your network settings, and particularly what was entered for the DNS server address? If you're not running DNS on your local network here, then enter no DNS servers as part of the prompting, and let Mac OS X Server establish its own default single-host DNS.
(You're not going to be able to use your ISP DNS here; those ISP DNS servers are not valid when you are establishing a server on a network behind a NAT gateway.)
I'd probably wipe the disk and boot from DVD and reload.

You need to make sure that the group you are enabling the services for is in the LDAP path for the 10.5 server, and not in the local directory or the LDAP for the 10.4 server.

  • Mac osx server 10.6

Hi everyone , i just clone mac osx server   10.6 from mini to my macbook. its clone successful  and boot fine . i did this for just practice . the problem is that when i disconnect   eathenet cable from that  the server  preference not working , i m looking something like Loopback adapter    in windows ..  so i can  open server preference  in  my macbook .... without  plugin eathenet cable at my home ....

well if your trying to connect to the host, without an active network port you could try connecting with localhost or 107.0.0.1. You could also try deleting the ethernet interface and re-adding it. And or hard coding the ethernet interface to static ip.

  • Adding Bootp/DHCP Options to Mac OSX Server 10.4

Our telephone supplier - Splicecom (http://www.splicecom.com/) - has asked us to ensure that option 66 and option 67 are enabled in order for their PCS400 handset to pick up an IP address from our Mac OSX Server DHCP server.
Please can somebody advise on how to either:-
    a) ensure that they are already enabled
    or
    b) tell me how to enable them
    Many thanks
    Paul

I think you need some other DHCP server to acheive what you need
option #66 = Boot Server Host Name
    option #67 = BootFile Name
    (Try "man bootpd" in Terminal.)
The ISC DHCP server can be installed in OS X using PortAuthority / DarwinPorts:
    "dhcp 3.0.3, Revision 1, net/dhcp (Variants: darwin_8)
    http://www.isc.org/products/DHCP/
ISC's Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Distribution reference implementation of all aspects of the DHCP protocol, through a suite of DHCP tools: A DHCP server, client, and relay agent. These tools all use a modular API which is designed to be sufficently general that can easily be made to work on POSIX- compliant operating systems and also non-POSIX systems like Windows NT and MacOS. The DHCP server, client and relay agent are provided both as reference implementations of the protocol and as working, fully-features sample implementations. Both the client and the server provide functionality that, while not strictly required by the protocol, is very useful in practice. The DHCP server also makes allowance for non-compliant clients which one might still like to support.
    Platforms: darwin
    Maintainers: [email protected]"
But you'll need to configure this DHCP using a texteditor.
