I am trying to update my Mac's software. Right now I have Mac OSX 5.2
Everytime i go to update it, it will restart and get stuck at "configuring installation".

  • Mac OSX sofware update problems-computer will not start-up any more

    Hello
I am having problems & I cannot get back into my computer. It won't complete the start up & just has the grey apple in the middle of the white screen and nothing else.
I have an iBook G4 with Tiger on it - I am not sure which version of Mac OS X I was on when I did the software update but the one I was on last year when I came to this forum was 10.4.8 & I think I have updated it a few times since then so it was probably as I was attempting to install 10.4.11 as I do not have Leopard yet.
The problem began when I did the Mac OSX update that it told me about in software update & when it had completed the update it said I needed to restart my computer which I did & ever since then it will not completely re-boot. (Like I said it just has the white screen/grey apple before it gives the option of who you want to login as).
It seems as though other people have been having similar problems after installing Mac OSX software updates but I cannot find anything here in the forum that solves my problems (or at least not that I can understand at th moment...!)
I need to access things off my computer & can't. Not everything on there was backed up as I had been working on things that day/week. I also don't know how to access my files from another computer (the ones I am trying to connect from does not have tiger it is a PowerBook G4 & it has Mac OSX 10.3.9 on it).
Does anyone know the reason for this problem & how to access files from another computer via an etheret cable in OSX. I know someone who says it was a lot easier to connect computers before Mac OSX days but now it seems really difficult. The only way to start up my iBook G4 is using the Mac OSX install disk & I have tried to verify & repair hard disk permissions using disk utility that comes on the disk as well as verifying & repairing the actual disk but this has not fixed the problem.
I am hoping that I will be able to at least access my files & copy them over to be backed up before I do an erase & install of Mac OSX from the disks. But I am unsure of how to connect my iBook the PowerBook G4 I am on right now. Please help if you know how!
    Thanks,
    Jazamin

This just worked for my by connecting my other PPC computer to my G5.

Go down to the other link and follow the same instructions.
You must start up the good computer and shut down the frozen one. Connect via firewire and then hold down the T key while you start the frozen one.
It will show up on your good one, and then install the combo on the frozen one.
Hold down the power key on that computer to shut it down, disconnect and then start up again.
    Good luck

  • Mac Book Software Update not working, iTune will not update because of that, iPhone 4 won't connect to iTunes because iTunes is not updated. Mac v.10.5.8, iTunes v.10.5.2, iPhone4 iOS 6

Mac Book Software Update not working (Software Update does not have any new software for your computer at this time), my current MacBook version is 10.5.8.
As a result I can't update iTunes, version 10.5.2  (This software requiers Mac OS X version 10.6.8 or later)
Now when I connect my iPhone 4, version iOS 6 iTunes can't connect to iPhone (The iPhone "XXXXX's iPhone" cannot be used because it requiers iTunes version 10.6.3 or later.)
so in a nutshell can't use iphone 4, because iTune is not updated and will not  update because Mac Book is not up to date and will not update either.
    Please help.
    Thank you

  • Is it possible to make a CD/DVD cover from exisitng Mac OSX software?

Is it possible to make a CD/DVD cover from existing Mac OSX software?

Depends on what you mean by cover and how elaborate you want it to be.
You could likely create one in TextEdit, but it wouldn't be simple.
I can't think of anything else bundled with the OS that would do that.
There isn't anything "purpose-made" for that task.

  • Mainstage 2.2.1 and MAC OSX Lion update 10.7.4 CRASH!

    hello there.
I'm dealing with an issue with mainstage and the last update from apple's OS, 10.7.4. The mainstage software (witch is intended for live - and steady - use) is crashing often after the OS update. I'm a professional musician and last night a had the third gig in a row with several problems with my setup. Mainstage starts behaving very strangely, a white intermitent bar appears in both sides of the section with the CPU usage and other infos in the top of the edit window. Then i suddenly can't change preset nor patches. the octaves are wrong and the sounds too. then comes the "rolling ball of mac" anouncing something really wrong. After the first time it happened and mainstage crash until closed, i managed to reopen it in the middle of the gigs... it was very stressing and frustrating.
before the last show, yesterday, I searched for answers in forums and here I found that maybe installing the update from appstore would end this issues. so I did, even being an owner of the logic bundle witch came with mainstage, and paid 29 dollars for the software again. the install was alright but the problems remain (actually it was the worst scenario in a gig for me ever...)
PLEASE HELP! i'm a recent user of the mac system, i have late 2009 macbook pro with mainstage 2.2.1 running mac OSX 10.7.4.
I cant afford having this kind of issues in the middle of my job! this become a real problem for me!
in case anyone would ask, NO, i haven't made a time machine backup in order to roll back the OS. my bad.
    thanks,
    piero

Its disconcerting to say the least to see that last post by SmithBurg was one year ago.  Disconcerting because there didnt appear to be a clear cut solution to an issue that seems to be happening to many users in that for whatever user's MS setups were doing at the time, the end result is that the program quits "unexpectantly" during a show.
I had been using MS originally on a late 2009 MB pro, and as my patches evolved, I started having several issues which would quit MS.
I did find what seemed to be a solution by reinstalling the OS to 10.6.8, and and new "unclogged" system seemed to fix the issue.  HOWEVER....a few months later and it "quit unexpectantly" in the middle of a show, or I couldnt get my focusrite scarlet 8i6 inteface to work in preferences...(had to use the MB pro minijack out!!   Which was very noisy with the power supply and I do NEED the power supply for a 4 hour show  (that old banana)
    I digress......
So, i think my laptop has had its day with all the issues id been having, and I go out 2 months ago and buy Apple's flagship macbook pro for $4200, with the idea that the ultra high specs of the laptop should do the trick.
MS reinstalled....I dont use 3rd party plugs as im content with MS sounds, (although i did install kontact to try out and it was far too memory intensive, so dont actually use it.
So for 1 month I play various shows with no issues.  I have not changes the setup at all EXCEPT adding one patch that I made.
Then one gig last month it happens again.  I'm flabbergasted now.      "MS quit unexpectantly"  but I DONT have wi-fi connected at the random venue, and CANT send apple the error report.
My only choice is to reboot and attempt to get the flow of the show back up again.   Thus loosing the error report.
I NEED a solution, and I cant understand what the error report is even saying.
SPENDING $4200 on a new laptop, and if i had hair, I'd be pulliing it out.SHOULD I HAVE GONE HARDWARE INSTEAD?  I know MS now, SO used to it, and i love MS far too much if only it worked for more than 5 seconds.
    PLEASE APPLE HELPPPPPPPP!
or any kind users out there with some kinda fault finding knowledge

  • Software Update Trouble

I've been having a lot of troubles with my MacBook and now it seems like my software update doesn't work. Its stuck on about 70% and its not moving at all. My internet connection is fine and it worked a while ago. Here is how it looks like
    http://img195.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture1zgk.png

Cancel your update process and quit Software Update. Then try the following:
    Fix for Software Update
See Troubleshooting Automatic Software Update in Mac OS X.
    Delete the following files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.xxx.plist
    "xxx" is a number.
    /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/ (delete entire folder)
    Now, do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now restart Software Update and see if it works properly.

  • MAC OSX Server update service?

    Hello,
    kind of a newbie here..
i've inherited a leopard mac server from a prvious it administrator.
i'm having trouble enabling the update service.
i downloaded all the latest updates though having trouble serving it to my mac users..
i've set up my own macbook to get updates from the server though it returns "no updates found" even though there's around 200 MB of updates on the server..
i checked the service it's all green and running so there must be something i've configured wrong on the server.. maybe the port or something of that sort..
can anyone guide me to a how to or something ?
ive followed a few tutorials online though that still dont seem to work..

Your software update server and your clients should be at the same level (i.e. all Leopard, or all Snow Leopard.) is that the case?
Secondly, in the server manager > software update > overview do you have the updates enabled? It's possible that they are downloaded, but not enabled. You can remedy that in the server manager > software update > settings > updates

  • Software Update troubles

I have two software updates that I'm having issues with. I'm running Leopard 10.5.2 on a 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro.
Whenever I attempt to install a Keyboard Firmware Update, version 1.0, it tells me: A networking error has occurred: Cannot open file (-3001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.
I have tried this on several different connections, wired and wireless, and continue to be unable to install.
I also am having trouble with the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware update, version 1.5. I have "successfully" installed this update about 4 times, yet the update continues to appear in my update box.

See if downloading it directly works:

If you look at the list of software updates in the Systems Preferences you can see if it actually installed or not. If it is listed it installed. Otherwise download it from the same page previously referenced and see what happens.
Installing a firmware update is not the same as installing a regular update. Also installing the EFI firmware update is even more different.
Be sure to follow the instructions to the letter.
If you find that these updates are indeed installed, then check your startup folder in Users in
System Preferences and remove it from the list.

  • New 2009 Mac Pro, Software Update never finishes (finds no updates/result)

I have a brand new 8-core Mac Pro (new 2009 Nehalem-based model). The configuration is stock, 2.26GHz CPUs and 6GB of RAM. Bought this at the Apple Store yesterday. It is fresh out of the box; I have not even installed anything yet.
When I run Software Update, the "Checking for new software..." sheet appears, and the progress bar gets about 10% done, and then it just hangs there. For hours, so I assume infinitely.
The Software Update program is not crashed--you can still pull down the menus, and if you click Cancel, it will. It just never finds any updates. Nor does it finish the process and tell me my system is up to date.
I tried it on the command line too, and it hangs in the same way:
    *IT-PC-MACPRO-1:~ mason$ softwareupdate --list*
    *Software Update Tool*
    *Copyright 2002-2007 Apple*
    ...also apparently forever.
Other than this, I haven't seen any problems with it in one day of use. This obviously seems like a software/configuration problem, not a hardware problem but still... not the best out-of-the-box experience. I am hoping this turns out to be a known issue with a simple fix. But has anybody else seen this issue?
The one thing I did try was moving the Mac to an entirely different network (from home to office). Other Macs here don't have any problem, just this one.
    Clues appreciated.

    Hi, thanks for the reply.
    1) I found updating worked as expected if I created a another admin account, and used that to run Software Update. However, Software Update still would hang infinitely if I ran it using my main account (again, a fresh account created by unboxing the Mac and doing the first-use interview wizard thing).
    2) Being curious, I tried removing each file you suggested independently, and trying Software Update (without restarting). None had an effect until I removed the ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
After moving this folder aside, and launching Software Update again, it worked normally (no reboot required).
So that's some data, posted for posterity. I saved the corrupt cache file that seems to have caused the problem, so I'll file a bug report with Apple if I have time.

i have an old iMac and cannot launch new OSX software updates

We need to narrow down "Old iMac." Please do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and tell us what the resulting window reports for your Processor type, as in this image:
Please post exactly what your iMac reports at the second red arrow in my example.

  • Unable to Load Mac OSX after update - Urgent! Please Help

I just updated my Mac using System update, which required a start.
I restarted the computer, but it's stuck in the gray apple screen with the circular running bars. It's been now 10 minutes, and it never took so much. I tried to turn it off, then on again, same problem. What should I do? Please, help!
    Thanks,
    richard

    Problem solved.
First of all, thank you all for the advices and links, now I learned something. After panicking, I tried the PRAM reset restart and the "shift" restart and it didn't work. I didn't have the installation disk with me, so I went straight to Tekserve to hear them. They told me that my system got corrupted for some reason and I had two options with them:
    - a quick fix, for US$59, which would erase all my HD content and take 24 hours
    - a fix without erasing the HD, for US$195, which would take 4 business days!
They said those were all the options. For me the money was not major problem. The big issue for me would be not having my computer for many days.
Then I thought: what if I try to reinstall the system myself? And they said: well, you can try that.
That's what I did as I got home. Install disk, restart holding down the "C" key.
One hour later, everything was back to normal.
Now the question: why at tekserve they didn't say anything to me about reinstalling the system myself?
Anyway, this was the first major problem I bumped into since I have turned to apple 3 years ago.
And again, thanks everybody for the help!

  • Mac OSX wont update to latest Flash Player version.

My Mac OSX intel 10.6.8 will not play Flash Player. I have followed all the instructions, including "How to Perform a Clean Install" but Flash Player does not work. I have even checked with Apple Community site and followed suggestions regarding plug-ins, etc. but still it does not work. Quite niggled  because I dont have flash player on my Mac at all now, having followed Adobe's instructions to delete original. If necessary and if possible I would download a previous version.  Using Safari v. 5.1.9.
Before uninstalling for the umpteenth time, I was able to provide the following information (to Apple Support Community) but eventually they told me I should contact this site.

  • Mac: Firefox software update process will not authorize in parental controlled account-Bug?

    OS: 10.7.5
    Firefox 20
Parental Controlled user account: Firefox and Firefox Plugin processes are checked in parental controls. No other Firefox processes are visible.
When logged into parental controlled account, user launches Firefox from the Dock. Message appears:
You do not have permission to run Firefox Software Update. Admin required authorization.
Admin clicked Always Allow, entered admin name & password. Firefox would not launch.
Logged out of Parental Controlled account.
    Logged in to Admin account.
Launched Firefox. "About Firefox" shows Firefox up to date.
    Logged out.
Logged back into parental controlled account.
    Firefox opens.
Is this a bug or is there some other reason the admin authorization failed?

I have a student that is having the same issue. Whenever she attempts to open Firefox, either from the dock or applications folder, she gets the permission error. I tried this under an admin account and get the same error, and it will not go past it, even with the admin user/pass. A strange icon appears in the dock for a second and the disappears, but Firefox never opens.
We have around 1600 student laptops in the school and I am seeing this on one of them. I have confirmed that she is running the latest version of Firefox and have tried to clear out the preferences, but there don't appear to be any.
Does anyone have anything useful to add to the conversation? Tyler just doesn't seem to be grasping the issue.

  • I podtouch software update trouble?

I can not update 4th gen Ipodtouch.  This is a new device. I up-dated Itunes and safari during startup connection to PC.  When I connect and use Itunes on PC desktop a network error occures. Seems like a time out, occurrs after about 8 minutes and during software processing.   The Ipod does not have software update function under, "setting>general>___," like the manual says?

Thank you very much.  I had disabled the anti-virus program before, but with your suggestion, I disable it and the windows firewall.  It worked!  After the software up date, the ipod touch now also shows the "software update function" in the device settings.
    Thank you again, much appreciated.
