Mac Partition Disappearing

My setup is an iMac with bootcamp running Mountain Lion and Windows 7. I have had them both installed and running for a long time. After using Mac OS for a while I wanted to boot into windows, so I shut down then machine and held the option key to select the OS. I noticed that the Mac partition no longer showed. I could however boot into and run windows with no problems.
This has happened in the past and my solution was to restore my time machine back to the partition. Even though it is not visible when holding option, it is visible in the disk utility of the recovery partition.
I'm thinking that it may be one of a couple of things. Either is problem with my Mac OS install that is occasionally corrupting it and is continuing because I keep restoring from time machine, or a failing hard drive. It's weird to me that it's just the one partition that is having trouble even though they are on the same physical drive.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions to guide me forward?

nflynn01,
First, what email program on your computer are you using to access your .Mac account? If its the Mac OS X's Mail, open it and go to Preferences, then the Account tab. Under the name you have given your .Mac account does it say .Mac, IMAP or POP3?
If it says .Mac, we'll continue.
Easiest way to configure .Mac on the iPhone is remove whatever you have configured so far, and choose Add Account in Settings -> Mail. Click on the .Mac option, enter your name, .Mac username and password. The rest will be configured for you.
Hope this helps,
Nathan C.

  • Mac Partition disappeared

My Mac drive has disappeared and the computer will only boot into Windows.
My keyboard will not allow any key commands when the computer first starts up and will only start working once I am presented with Windows User login.
There is no sign of my Mac anymore???

It is pretty much completely ignoring all things mac now, and only booting in Windows.  None of the start up prompts (s, c, ctrl + alt, etc) get me anywhere.
ETA: I can access the disks on the windows partition, is there any way to re-install bootcamp or something there?
    No.
Reboot, hold the option key down at the sound of the chime, release it when the startup manager appears.
Does the startup manager contain a Mac drive as well as a Windows drive, are there any drives other then the Windows drive showing?

  • Windows 7 partition disappeared?

So as I was creating a partition for Windows 7 (500 GB, leaving the Mac partition with 100 GB to spare), it gave me some sort of error about files and what-not (I apologize for not remembering). I then proceeded to click okay, and I tried to create a new partition with the same GB space, but this time, as I was using safari, my iMac froze and I decided to turn off the computer and turn it back on again. After that I immediately went back to bootcamp, and tried to make another partition, but this time, I only had 77 GB to add to the already 20 GB Windows 7 partition. Meaning I only have 97 GB left on my iMac. Did my partition disappear with all that storage? Please help me.
    iMac version 10.6.8

That program, NTFS 3G, has nothing to do with whether or not you have a Win 7 partition and whether or not it is still on your drive or has disappeared.
Open System Preferences and go to Startup Disk. Is the Win 7 partition listed as a startup drive? If it is then it hasn't disappeared, it still there. Another way to get to it is to hold down the Option/Alt key at startup. That brings up a BOOT Menu screen where you can select which partition to boot from. Is the Win 7 partition listed? If it is then it hasn't disappeared.
But that program you installed has been corrupted in some way and not loading. That program, NTFS 3G, is for Mac OS X to Write to NTFS formatted partitions which natively it Can't Do.

  • Windows partition disappearing - twice

    Is this a common problem?
I installed a Bootcamp partition and put Windows XP on it. No problem installing and using Windows for many months. Then one day, it just disappeared - the Windows disk no longer appeared on the desktop and the option to boot from it disappeared from the startup disk in settings. The hard disk space occupied by Windows still seemed to be there i.e. it wasn't available in Finder. So, I used Bootcamp assistant to delete the Windows partition and started again, re-installed Windows XP and thought I'd sorted it until today when I tried to restart the Mac in Windows but the Mac didn't like it for some reason and hung. A quick switch off/on and the Mac restarted in Mac OS and again the Windows partition disappeared although the space it occupied is still there.
    Does this make sense?
Is there anything else I can do before I go through the whole Bootcamp/Installation process again?
Should I give up on Bootcamp and use Parallels instead?
    Thanks for any help.

I went to boot into windows Xp last night, I use the option key, and it was missing too. Just my Mac HD showing up. Is it related to SL 10.6.6? Can't think of any other changes. Is there any way that my files have not been erased forever?

Updated software on Macbook Air and bootcamp partition disappeared.  Windows boot option no longer appears.  Can I get it back and the data?

Amy, is there a chance they could both be Syncing to another device that has the data erased?
What are the sizes & modification dates on the files you found?
Could be many things, we should start with this to be safe, though 2 different ones would seem unlikely to be this problem...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Under SL, a 2nd disk partition disappears; re-appears if shutdown and start

Background: MacBook Pro, two+ years old. On day one I partitioned the 100GB drive into three sections for MAC OS, DATA and WINDOWS. Never installed Windows.
Just installed SL upgrade. Had some problems; MAC OS space was insufficient. It took SL a while to decide the WINDOWS partition was the wrong format. (I had forgotten the FAT formatting from two years ago.) SL install went into a loop more than once. Finally had to re-install the original MAC OS and then installed SL, which now seems to be working fine. (This is the short version of four+ hours to install SL.)
But now the DATA partition disappears at random times. It will be displayed on the desktop at startup and then, a while later, no longer be displayed. Disk Utility will show it as greyed out but Disk Utility Verify will report it's fine. If I shutdown and restart, it re-appears on the desktop.
I have used Time Machine since it came out. If the DATA partition is visible, Time Machine will include it in the next backup. If it is not visible, Time Machine will not include it.
My first goal is the get the DATA partition stable and permanently visible if there is something obvious that I can correct.
In studying this problem, I've learned that the MAC OS partition, 48.97 GB, is down to 137.3MB of free space. Is this a possible cause of the DATA partition problem? What other operating symptoms might I be seeing due to insufficient free space?
From reading other posts, it seems I have to re-format the entire disk drive to recover the WINDOWS partition, which is 12.75GB. Is that correct?
If I do a re-format and complete SL install, will Time Machine restore all of the working data?
    thanks
    Ray

    Hi Ray;
Yes, running with only 137.3 MB in your system partition can cause all sorts of problems. I would suggest you get rid of enough of your files to get at least 10 GB free.
Since you are not using the Windows partition that might be a good place to move your photos and music to.
    Allan

  • Can no longer see or access Mac partition

I upgraded my iMac to 10.6.1 and then installed\configured bootcamp. Walked through the XP installation with no problem. My Mac partition\boot drive is not available in the bootcamp control panel and holding the alt\option key does not provide the 2 drives like on my other Mac. I also can not use the Snow Leopard disk. The system only boots to XP now. Any suggestions or ideas on what I can do would be welcome. I am even willing to reload ... If I can get that far.

where you able to solve this problem? I'm now facing a similar issue.

  • Bootcamp files do not show up in mac partition.

Hi, my question is about retrieving files from bootcamp while I am on the mac partition.  I used to be able to see a disk icon for my bootcamp on my desktop when I was on my mac partition, but ever since I installed Yosemite, I have not been able to see it on my desktop, or as one of the drives in my finder.  From this icon, I was able to access files created in Bootcamp.  I no longer can see this icon on my mac's desktop.  I have no problem opening bootcamp when I press alt on startup, so bootcamp is not broken, but I would like to be able to access those files while I am in Yosemite again.  Any ideas?
    Thank in advance,
    dk

All Office applications will also try to open a temporary work file in the same location as the source file. This implies the source file directory also needs to be writable for this temporary file. Since the default HFS+ driver provides only read-only access, such temporary files will fail to open, and will cause the application to fail.
As a test copy the file you want to edit, say an Excel spreadsheet from the OSX file system to the C: drive on the Windows side and try to open it. If you look in this directory, you should see two files, the source and a temporary file. You may have to force the temporary file to be opened on a read-write file system, by manipulating the folder for temporary files.

  • Recovering Data from a deleted Mac partition

Through no fault of my own, (an IT department at a well know digital data storage company that will remain nameless) I had all the partitions deleted from my hard drive. No data was damaged, but the Mac partition and the FAT 32 I had windows 7 running on with bootcamp were both deleted. My hard drive is now 250 gigs of unallocated space.
Is there any easy and inexpensive way to recover that data? I'm pretty sure I can't just "undelete" the deleted partitions but it would be nice to get my data off so I don't have to go from the DVD back ups from christmas time.
Anyway I found Disk Warrior and Drive Genius that claim to recover data but they are both about $100.
    Any ideas?
Here's the irony of the situation, I was using the utility given me by the IT department while trying to setup a NAS device so I can create regular time machine backups in case anything happened to my lappy. So by trying to get a system working that would help me protect my data, it deleted my data. I would have been fine without it. GRRRR...

Hi, Take the HDD out and connect it to another system then run R-Studio against it. It can recover FAT partitions and I have used it many times with great sucess.

  • Can't boot into Windows after splitting Mac partition with Disk Utility

    Hi everyone,
I installed Windows 8 with BOOTCAMP, creating a large 871 GB partition with a smaller 127 GB partition for Windows. After installing Windows, I then went back to Disk Utility to shrink the Mac partition and add two new partitions, one for storage and another blank, hoping to use it to install Linux into one day.
I did that, and now Windows doesn't boot. A Windows blue screen tells me I need to use the Windows DVD to repair it.
I tried to use Disk Utility to delete the two new partitions I made and grow the Mac partition back to the max size of 871 GB. But it doesn't let me do this. The Disk Utility log doesn't report an error and thinks it worked but the partition stays the same size. However if I make the partition a little smaller, like 870 GB then it works. I'm wondering if the Recovery partition is hiding there and preventing me from fully expanding the Mac partition.
    What can I do?
Here's what I get if I type in sudo gpt -r -vv show disk0:

    Kappy,
I can boot into OS X just fine so if possible, I'd like to avoid reformatting everything. If you know of a way I can add more than 2 partitions with OS X and Boot Camp, please let me know. As far as I know, rEFInd can recognize more than two partitions, but I don't think it can edit partitions on a GPT / hybrid MBR system. Or am I wrong?

  • Mac G5 Disappears on my home network

I have a annoying problem that I am struggling to solve
I have an old PowerMac G5 (1.6ghz PowerPC) running leopard, which has a huge hard disk so it is used as a dumping ground for everything digital. I wanted to be able to get this onto my home network so I could use it as a master iTunes collection, as well as being able to access files from my MacBook Pro (2.26 Ghz Intel)
My home network also has a Windows 7 PC which has a printer attached which I would like to be able to print over the network, but thats a different problem
My problem is this, the G5 didn't have a wireless card and can not be connected via Ethernet due to the distance it is from the router. So to get online I bought a dongle online....
    This>>http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130334850512&ssPageName=STR K:MEWNX:IT#ht4206wt907
Plugged it in, followed the instructions which involved disabling all my network options (Firewire, Ethernet and Internal Modem) and using this USB Ethernet solely
This works a treat, and finally I have my old power horse online! Great, but the two macs (as well as the Windows PC) struggle to see each other - sometimes I can see the G5 on my Shared list, and have even managed to transfer files from one to the other. However to get this to work, I had to first open iTunes and enable home sharing. This at first worked perfectly, but now it just stops after about 5 mins, if it works at all. My MacBookPro is now showing up on the G5 in shared, but with the blue screen of death showing! So it thinks my MBP is a PC, wont see the PC at all and cant be found from my MBP at all
I dont know what to do to solve this problem, its annoying because it HAS worked, but then just stopped and now is temperamental at best, impossible most of the time. iTunes home share has to be restarted all the time, it wont see my iPhone as a remote at all (works perfectly on the Windows 7 PC... grrrr)
I dont know where to start to fix it really, all my sharing options are set to open and sharing on both Macs and I have restarted the router, Macs etc etc a million times hoping it would just 'work' like I expected it too!
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Bankos, and a warm welcome to the forums!
all my sharing options are set to open and sharing on both Macs..
In System Preferences>Security>Firewall tab, what are the settings there?

  • IMac 27 no longer allows me to select MAC partition at startup

Have OS 10.6 with a windows 7 partition loaded for about 1 year. Default boot into Windows. Waqs working in OSX yesterday and loaded new CISCO VPN software. Booted into windows, got white screen for a while. Tried again. Tried again then booted into windows. Now when I try and boot into MAC I never get prompted at startup to sleect boot disk. Wire keyboard has new batteries. Other than trying a connected keyboard any ideas?
I do not see a partition in windows for my mac either. I have a 200GB windows partition and a 800GB MAC partition.
Fortunately I have a recent backup to an external drive.

Resolved. No answer. Started working again.

  • Mac partition no longer accessible

So I got a shiney new Macbook Pro and I needed Windows on it as well so one of the first things I did was use Bootcamp to install Windows 8.1. This worked great. Setup was easy and I haven't had any trouble using either system. Then, earlier today I needed to add another partition on the windows side so I could lock it with Bitlocker. And here is where everything fell apart.
The new partition worked fine but I've recently discovered that the computer can no longer see the original OS X partition so I'm stuck in Windows (although at this point I could see the recovery drive if I held option on restart). In an attempt to fix this I removed the new partition which means I can no longer see the recovery drive and only the windows drive is visible when I start up while holding the option key. Windows is still working fine though.
Much googling indicates that this is a fairly common problem. Unfortunately for me, it seems that people usually lose the Windows partition instead of the Mac partition so all of the solutions involve running commands and programs from the Mac side of this. I did manage to get into the Disk Utility in recovery mode and identify my mac drive as "disk1s4" (since it's the only one formatted to "Mac OS Extended"). When I verified the disk it said it needed to be repaired. When I tried to repair the disk it just told me it couldn't and said I should back up as many files as I can and format the disk.
I would obviously like to find a way to restore the mac partition to working order but at this point I'm not really opposed to just formatting it. I don't have any files on there that don't also exist elsewhere and it won't take me too long to reinstall the programs I'd installed. However, I figured I should clarify some things before jumping off any more cliffs.
    1) Will formatting the Mac partition and re-installing OS X do anything to my Bootcamp installation? Will I have to reinstall the windows partition as well?
    2) Is there any way of adding/removing partitions in this scenario without breaking Bootcamp?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

imho then bootcamp is not much more troublesome then installing a clean install of windows on a computer which didn't have it preinstalled but for many people thats not for them
other then that macs really really like to use the apple bootcamp drivers letting windows update or manually installing driver mean you're gonna have a bad time
for people who need not play 3d games or use very taxing applications a vitual machine is likely better

  • Mac partition (hfs+) not visible in Windows after upgrade to Yosemite

    Hi,
I'm using a MacBook Pro with two partitions, Windows 8.1 (Bootcamp) en Mac OS X. I upgraded Mac OS from 10.9 to 10.10 (Yosemite) recently.
After upgrading, the Mac partition in Windows is no longer visible. I need it to be visible, as I have files on that partition which I need to access in Windows.
I've checked the format of the Mac partition, which is HSF+. I have installed the latest Bootcamp driver (5.1.5621).
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
