Mac Partition fails but Bootcamp is fine

Hello
I'm having an odd issue where my MacBook Pro's Bootcamp partition is running fine, but the Mac Parition is acting up.  I backed up the Mac side, booted into a Mavericks installation USB stick, wiped and formatted the Mac partition using Disk Utility, but can't seem to be able to install Mavericks still as it says the disk needs to be fixed (even though I just formatted it...)
Does this mean I need to re-format the whole disk, and not just the mac partition, to be able to do a clean install of Mavericks?
Thanks

So you mean that if the faulty sectors are in fact there, it could be a hardware problem, but just localized to a certain part of the disk?
Thanks!

Does your mic work in System Preferences?
System Preferences > Sound > Input
There is an Input Level meter that should light up when you talk. Just to make sure your mic and Mac are working.
Which mic are you using? Are  you using the built in mic on an Apple Display? I have Apple's LED display and every time I use Facetime, as in place or take a call, the mic input volume gets reset to a level so low, people can't hear me. I have to manually raise the mic volume back to where I had set it. When I end the call, Facetime resets the volume back to where I set it. If I don't reset the mic volume level on each and every call, people can't hear me.
I called Apple on this. They downloaded a log file tool to my Mac and took some logs. Then they called me back and said this works as designed. Incredible.
So, if you are using Apple's LED display, this may be your problem. Note that the mic volume level gets set low and reset back only during a call. If you check it before a call and then after a call, it looks fine as if nothing changed. Open up the Sound prefernces and watch it get reset in real time.

  • Wifi network failing, but Chrome is fine!

    Hi,
I've recently started to have terrible problems with my wifi network: i thought perhaps i was losing internet connectivity, but this is not the case.
All i can say is that periodically my internet apps lose connection, and then i will notice i've lost network connection.
Eventually, some of it is restored, but this time i noticed something interesting: I can use Chrome fine, I can now see my network, but apps such as Slack and Safari are totally failing to connect.
This is a brand new Macbook Pro with16GB Ram, a 521MB SSD, and the latest Yosemite OS (10.10.4 14C109)
From my perusing, i noticed that often a log is requested from EtreCheck, so I include one here in advance, taking whilst Chrome is working but Safari etc are not.
    Thanks

I tried exporting the enviroment variables from /etc/makepkg.conf, to no avail. I also tried adding the girara include files to CFLAGS, but it throws the same kind of error about some gtk dependency.
I don't know if this is a general issue, but as I can compile it through makepkg I don't think this is due to zathura.
Does anyone have a clue on what could be wrong here?

In the PKGBUILD, they are cloning the repo by doing :
    _gitroot="git://pwmt.org/zathura.git"
    _gitname="zathura"
    git clone $_gitroot
    cd $_gitname && git checkout --track -b develop origin/develop
Are you doing the same ?

  • Home sharing not working between mac and pc, but it is fine between mac and mac. Help!!!

    Good Evening Dear Gurus,
Hi, I am writing this to ask for help regarding home sharing. Yes I do know they are several threads out there that already explains or rather given solution on how to tackle this problem. BUT the my problem is rather different. I am no computer expert myself, so here is the problem, apparently MY MAC can home share with another MAC, but both of this MAC cannot home share with the PC.
Does anyone encounter this kind of problem before? Can anyone help a poor guy out? Thanks in advance. love to hear from the community soon!
    Thanks!

Sharing Stopped working again over night.
I went to Apple Support Artical TS2972
As soon as I did this Home Sharing started working
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
    Firewall Section
    5. Check Firewall Settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.
In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general.
If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration.
For Mac OS X, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu > System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
    Block all incoming connections
    Allow only essential services
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
It made sense to me, but its still puzzling me after restarting a router would (in my first attempt) resolve the issue for a day.  This this time I applied the port forwarding TCP and UDP ports and saved the settings in the DLink DIR-655 and both my iPad2 and iPhone 3GS were now again finding the share. My ATV2 is also now accepting the Share.
Tommorrow will be the true test.

  • Mac wont Boot but BootCamp still works

upon restarting from windows to mac, my mac won't boot up to the login screen (it showed the Apple Logo stuck with a blue screen). I was told to reinstall my os which i did.
I restored my mac using back up (time machine). Which took me 7 hours. And after the restoration was completed, I was prompted to restart my computer. However, upon restart, i was welcomed by a big power button asking me to restart my computer again. I restarted my laptop and still am being asked to restart it again.
My windows works perfectly, however i cannot boot into mac.
    Please help!!!

Startup to your Snow install DVD and try repairing disk. You also might try following the [steps here including resetting your SMC if necessary|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US].

  • I want to reformat ONLY my Mac partition leaving my bootcamp partition intact. How do I do that?

As title explains. I want to do a reformat of my disc without affecting my windows partition.

    No.
You will use Disk Utility (from the Recovery Partition, Command-R), select the partition, go to the erase tab and set the format (MacOS Extended (Journaled) then erase the partition.

  • Mac Partition is getting corrupted - using OS X 10.8.1

Since upgrading to 10.8 I have major issues with my Mac partition. I am running 10.8.1 right now.
    Here is the problem:
I have a MB Pro 15" early 2011. 2 partitions, one Bootcamp, one Mac OS X. About 3 weeks ago while working on the Mac side I get the Kaleidoscope to come up, and the system freezes. I do a restart, and it won't boot into the Mac partition anymore. Bootcamp is still fine, and I can see all my data.
I booted into the recovery partition. Worked fine. Verifying and repairing the Mac OS X partition didn't work.
Took it to the genius bar. They determined that I was missing or had corrupted system files. They reinstalled Mac OS X, and I then did a backup from Time Machine - all great.
For about 3 days. Then the same thing happened again. I did this 3 more times. Good for a day or 2, then corruption again. After the 4th time, I used the new user account, and only brought back the documents and libraries on the old account, and then manually transferred them over to the new account. I also restored the applications from the back up. I erased the old account, only worked with the new account.
Once again it worked fine until this morning. Now I have the same symptoms again.
What is next? Do I get rid of Bootcamp all together and reinstall everything from scratch? I don't think that this issue is in the time machine backup.
Before I do this, I was wondering whether there is any other advise out there is terms of wha

I have since 7 days the same problem with 10.8.2 an 10.7.5 on the same hardware (early 2011 15" Mac Book Pro).
I had 3 crashes last week. HD Smart Status is O.K.
I have some problems with my external Firewire 800 HD during startup. System hangs about 3 minutes, when drive is running. It seems like system disk is corrupted a while after startup problems.

  • New Hard Drive, Mac partition cloned and boots fine, but I can't seem to get my BOOTCAMP (windows) partition to boot!  Any ideas?

    Hello all!
I got a new hard drive for my Mac Book Pro and an enclosure so I could clone the old partitions on to the new drive.
    So I...
Put the new hard drive in the enclosure.
Booted up off an install disk and ran disk utility.
Copied the Mac and Bootcamp partitions over to the new drive that was connected VIA USB.
Turned off the computer, took the old hard drive out and put it in the enclosure.
Put the new hard drive in the Mac Book Pro.
Booted into Mac OSX with no problem.
When I rebooted held down the option key to boot into the windows side, it didn't show up as an option.
When I went back into the Mac side, I loaded Disk Utility and saw that I had the Mac partition, the BOOTCAMP partition, and a bunch of unallocated space.  When I went into the System Preferences and set the target boot drive to the BOOTCAMP partition and restarted, I got some crazy error about there not being any bootable info on it.
That's where I am at.  I have found other posts with people who are having the same problem, but I have yet to find a solution that doesn't involve me buying some 3rd party software.  I know it has something to do with (what is called in Microsoft world) the Master Boot Record, but I don't know how to modify that to reflect that the BOOTCAMP partition is a bootable logical drive.  I remember in MS DOS land there was some command line FDSK /something command that you would run (I think it was /MBR) to reset the MBR.  To me though, all of these terms are shadowy figures in the Ether.
    What do I do???
    -Ricardo
p.s.  I read somewhere to boot off the windows 7 disk and run the system repair tools. I tried that and no change.

I got it. It CAN be done. At least on 10.6
How I made it happen (for free) on Snow Leopard:
    1) partition, dupe etc all that jazz that you know. Make the mac side work, which it seems we've all been able to do no issues. I used SuperDuper! It worked just fine. (Had it on a disk. I assume you could use any other free way of doing this.)
    2) New hard drive running, I used bootcamp assistant to partition the new drive for a new Bootcamp. I don't know if it's necessary to make the new partition this way for some reason, but it's what the process ultimately included, so maybe try without, but it worked with.
    3) Natively running original drive on the windows side. Used DirveImage XML to clone windows partition onto new drive connected externally.
    4) Back on new hard drive running natively. (Sorry for all the switching.) You'll note that the new Bootcamp partition is NOT bootable at this point. It won't come up in the usual 'alt on startup' boot menu.
Download rEFInd and install on mac side. Technically this is freeware or w/e, but for the love of god, throw money at this man. He totally deserves it.
    5) Restarting the computer, rEFInd's boot manager finally recognizes windows. But you'll find windows is a little messed up and still won't quite boot. Get out your Windows CD and pop it in. Do the 'alt boot' thing. Your boot menu options are now "EFI Manager," "Bootcamp," and "Windows Disk." Or some such. Holy Crap! It recognizes Windows!
    6) Boot to the CD and tell it to repair the windows volume. It will. My computer also had to do a disk check next time I booted to Windows, which took for-stupid-ever, but eventually worked. (I went to bed in between.)
    7) Everything is running smoothly. Plus, you get the rEFInd boot manager, which is also great.
Deets: I have a late 2010 MBP 13". Snow leopard/Windows 7 32-bit (long story) Moved from original 320GB seagate momentus to new 750GB Seagate Momentus XT.
Feel free to share/copy&paste this solution as you see useful. Cheers!

  • My external hard drive appears in bootcamp but not on my mac partition

This is intriguing. I own a macbook pro and run osx 10.6.8
I recently bought a new 1 tb hard drive and partitioned it. (300G for time machine and another for 700G for random things). It was working fine until I tried logging onto my bootcamp partition. I couldn't edit any files (due to the format of the drive), so I decided to relog back onto my mac parititon. Now the disk is grayed out in disk utility, under a different name and a different format type. I can read the files on my windows partition, but I cannot even access the drive on my mac partition. This drive is rather big, and I have no idea how I would even begin bcking it up... ( i don't have any other drives this large..)
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!!

You wrote: "It's definitely formatted for windows...I have Disk Warrior, but it doesn't see my drive "DiskWarrior only works on disks in Mac OS formats, e.g. "Mac OS Extended" (aka HFS Plus or HFS+), "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." It won't fix disks in MS-DOS/FAT32 format.
There are PC-specific disk utilities, akin to DiskWarrior for Mac, so if you have a PC as well, a PC disk utility might help repair the directory corruption if run from a PC.
External drives, whether they're formatted for PCs or Macs, can be subject to the same causes of directory corruption discussed in See my "Data corruption and loss: causes and avoidance" FAQ. Some of those causes have nothing to do with hardware failure and many are preventable.
    Good luck!

  • Mac dies on boot, every time - but bootcamp Windows partition still runs

    Hi there,
I hope someone can give a bit of advice.
I have a 17" Intel iMac, Core 2 Duo, the old white style, running OSX 10.4 Tiger.
When I got it I set up a smallish partition (80GB, the hard drive is 500GB) using the Bootcamp beta and installed Vista Home Premium on the partition. I went along for a while happily switching between the two. However, I am now completely incapable of booting into OSX.
When the computer is turned on, the Mac chime sounds, then it thinks for a second or two, and goes straight into Vista. If I hold down Option to go into Bootcamp and choose which OS to run, it will let me. However if I choose the Mac partition, the computer thinks for a sec, then switches itself off.
I've tried launching in safe mode. This doesn't work, the computer just boots into Vista.
I've tried inserting the Tiger install disk to run Disk Utility (holding C when you turn on), but the same thing happens - it boots in Vista.
I've tried launching in single user mode, but the same thing happens.
I've tried running Disk Warrior, but can't.
I've tried Cmd/Opt/Shift/Del to force it to run from the CD, but it just turns off.
Basically, I have the install disks for OSX and Vista, and I have everything backed up on an external HD, so I want to do a complete fresh install of OSX and start again - I might purchase Leopard and use its version of Bootcamp (because it's not beta, and would hopefully be more secure from this kind of thing).
Is there anything else I can do to make this thing run Disk Utility? I don't want to pay repair costs if I can somehow avoid it.
    Thank you very much.

But there can't be much wrong with the HD if the Windows partition runs fine.
Sort of, sort of not, depending how you look at things... one bit going astray in the wrong place can cause anything to happen.
Does it boot into Open Firmware with CMDOption+of ?

I tried to partition him using bootcamp but didn't have mac os cd neither mac instalation. the problem i am dealing now its that i cant go back to OS partition since its not appeared when i restart c and no win drivers to have a properly running system. I've thought as an option to re-download boot-camp and run the instalation from windows partition and see if i can repair it that way, didnt try yet thought just in case anyone has a better prposition or dealed with the same problem

Take it to your local Apple Store or AASP, it's covered by a 1 year hardware warranty. If you have AppleCare then give them a call but I'm pretty sure they will advise the same. If you have not purchased AppleCare yet please do, this will extend the warranty to 3 years however it MUST be purchased within the first  year of ownership. Let it go 366 days and you are out of luck. AppleCare will also include telephone support too.
    Good luck.

And you can read from OS X and do some backups.
If you modified your partitions, that is one reason it isn't working.
Using Cloning as a Backup Strategy
That works for OS X. There are other programs and methods for Windows.
Someone posted the commands to run from Windows DVD to fix / edit BCD.
That was just a couple days ago, should be easy to find.

  • How to access Mac Partition after bootcamp

I've just recently bootcamped my Mac and now i have windows 7 and that is working fine but now when I try to get onto Mac Partition it dosent work. I've tried to restart my Mac but it hasn't worked I can't access the Mac Partition it is just stuck on the loading screen when you turn the Mac on and stays like that. How do i fix this or just access the Mac Partition

    Hi,
usually you hold down the Alt/Option-key at startup of your Mac to get the Boot Selection screen.
There you can choose which Operating System to boot into.
Once in OSX you might wanna go to System Preferences - Startup Volume and set your OSX to be the default.
If that's not working you should boot from your OSX Install DVD (holding down the C-key at startup) and use Disk Utility from it to verify/repair your harddisk/OSX.

  • Bootcamp files do not show up in mac partition.

Hi, my question is about retrieving files from bootcamp while I am on the mac partition.  I used to be able to see a disk icon for my bootcamp on my desktop when I was on my mac partition, but ever since I installed Yosemite, I have not been able to see it on my desktop, or as one of the drives in my finder.  From this icon, I was able to access files created in Bootcamp.  I no longer can see this icon on my mac's desktop.  I have no problem opening bootcamp when I press alt on startup, so bootcamp is not broken, but I would like to be able to access those files while I am in Yosemite again.  Any ideas?
    Thank in advance,
    dk
