Mac/PC ethernet problems

I have my 4 computers (see below) set up on an Ethernet network. While the 2 PCs will access the Internet and mail via the network OK, I cannot work out how to see them on the Macs, or see the MAcs on the PCs. I have added an HP Color LaserJet 5M and want to be able to print to it, but they do not seem to be able to 'see' it. I can live without the Win 98 one, but I really would like the XP PC to be visible properly on the network and to be able to file share.
Any ideas anyone?

We need a little more information Odille.
How is the Ethernet network set up? Is it a switch, a hub, a router, a wireless router, ...?
How are you accessing the Internet? Through broadband, or through dial up? Is the Internet connection attached directly to one of the PCs, or is it through another device connected to your Ethernet network?
Can the Macs access the Internet? Can the Macs see each other?
How are the machines being allocated IP addresses? Do all the machines have an IP address of the form 192.168.x.y, or 10.x.y.z, of 172.x.y.z ('private' address space)?
The LaserJet 5M supports PostScript (the "M" was HP code at the time for Mac support, which equated to PostScript). It can use AppleTalk, TCP/IP, NetBEUI and Novell IPX as network transport. You turn each of these on or off on the printer through the front panel and menus. Probably via a menu item called "EIO 2 JETDIRECT MENU". You almost certainly want this set up as follows:
IPX/SPX=OFF
DLC/LLC=OFF
TCPIP=ON
ETALK=ON
(I'm assuming you are using TCP/IP to talk to the printer from WIndows).
If you turn on AppleTalk on your Mac OS X machines, then Printer Setup will be able to see them. If you don't want to use AppleTalk, then turn ETALK=OFF on the printer and you will need to find out what the IP address of the printer is. Then, in Printer Setup, select "IP Printer -> HP JetDirect - Socket" and enter the printer's IP address. Leave the "Queue" blank.
For the Windows machines to be able to share files on the Macs, go to "System Preferences -> Sharing" and turn on "Windows Sharing".
For the Macs to be able to see the Windows machines, they need to be sharing folders, and you should see them by browsing "Network -> My Network" from the Finder.

  • Ethernet Problem with Multiple users on same Mac

Hi, sorry i advance for my english. I am writing from italy.
I have an imAc with 2 users profiles on it. one profile is administratoe, and the oter a standard user.
I also have a time capsule configured to connect to my network with the ethernet cable. the cable is plugged in the wan pot, the configuration is "bridged" and i use as a router a linksys wifi router.
well. suppsung that i am logging in with one of my users and access to time capsule wirelessly, it shows me the disk content.
i then swith to the other user without logging off the first one and then access time capsule where i see the same folfder and i can access it. so everything works fine.
in the case i connect my mac with ethernet (disabling airort) to my linksys router, ifuser 1mounts time capsule, user 2 can't access it if user 1 does not unmount.
    why so?
i need to switch from user 1 to user 2 without logging off, and i don't understand why it works wirless and not with ethernet..

In fact, all my page beans are in REQUEST scope...
The only bean in Application scope is the standard applicationBean created by Creator itself.
We use one Bean in session scope which contains another class.
I will try to explain our common process:
    - when logging into the app, the session Bean stores user data (rights for using app,...);
    - when navigating in the app, the user can search data, modify them and create one (if he has the right to do it);
    - to define the screen, we use a lot the beforeRenderResponse();
    - when viewing a data, the user can choose to modify it, so depending on the action, the page is in "CONSULT" mode or "MODIFY" mode. In the second one, he can display new gridPanel (as a subform) to populate datatable.
The problem is obvious while using this grid: my grid can disappear if someone else has validated his form before me and if my page goes trough the beforeRender of my page.
It is not really clear. If needed, i can give access to our application to show the problem (and msn adress too to talk about it).

  • HELP!!! Mac G4 450mhz dual ethernet PROBLEMS!

Hello, my mac is having a serious problem with the internet. It won't connect, and even though i have a ethernet cable plugged in, it says i don't. Everything was working fine until i left for 2 days and and plugged it for that time. I need the internet in that mac as soon as possible.
    PLEASE HELP ME!

I too, am having the same problem... but mine isn't because of the possible software update, it just flat out doesn't work!
I too, have tried asking for help with the possibility of (hopefully) restoring the driver/extension... but after reformating the drive and reinstalling the software from 10.2, to 10.2.8 and it still failed to work, I ended up buying a Belkin Gigabit Ethernet PCI Card that has FAILED in every way!!!
The Belkin card will work as a one-time thing, and after restarting or disconnecting the Ethernet cable, it fails to function and fails to be "selectable" within the Ethernet configuration "Show:" options.
    ...so don't buy the Belkin...
I have yet to resolve my dead Ethernet problem, and it is... a problem!
I know this isn't contributing much of anything, but don't waist your time with the Belkin. I bought one, it acted in the way described above, and the Belkin Tech Support suggested I exchange it with another one, and so I did... and it too... is acting in the manner described above.
No resolve... no Ethernet... no on-line schtuff. not on that G4!!!

  • IMac DualCore with Ethernet problem

    Hi,
today I received my new iMac Dualcore 17". But after installing I suddenly realized that the ethernet port is not working. I plugged in my DSL-cable and nothing happend. The modem is working fine with my older Mac. Apple Support Chat advised me to reset both the PRAM and SUM, but unfortunately with no success.
Does anyone of you have a clue what to do? I'm not very keen on sending my new iMac back to Apple and waiting another couple of weeks before they get it fixed.
Thanks in advance to any reply!

Do you have any details s to the problems you
experienced with the Cisco Switches? I also have a
Cisco VoIP system in place and I keep getting kicked
off the network when connected through the phones.
Did you just plug the computer into the wall and
disable all the 802.11q trunking on that port? If
so I think I may have another jack close by that can
be set up for this specific computer.
Correct. 802.1Q trunking is specifically what the Ethernet interfaces on apparently all Intel-based Macs to date are having troubles with. In other words, disable the aux VLAN on a switch port, and the Intel-based Mac's Ethernet will work on that port. (Obviously this suggestion assumes you have netadmin privileges over your switch!)
It concerns me that no software update has yet been released for this problem. One would think if it were simply a driver issue, an updated driver would have already been released. Thus, one might be lead to believe that the problem goes deeper than software.

  • Mac Mini ethernet read / write speeds different

    Hello.
I have a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 Mac Mini running OS X Version 10.8.4.
I recently bought a Synology ds212j NAS, and started to transfer some files across my home LAN.
Everything was running fine until I noticed that the transfer had started to go really slowly.
At first I thought it was the NAS, but after exhaustive testing I think the problem is with the Mac Mini ethernet port.
I ran the LAN Speed Test program against the NAS and got the following results (with the NAS plugged directly into the Mac Mini):
    Writing (Upload): 54 Mbps
    Reading (Download): 689 Mbps
I get similar results when running against my time capsule:
    Writing (Upload): 44 Mbps
    Reading (Download): 767 Mbps
Can anyone explain what might be going on? Is it a defective ethernet port? Are there any steps I can take to further diagnose / resolve the issue?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Thanks for replying Johnathan.
I understand that write / read speeds can be different on a hard disk, but the key thing here is that the speeds changed suddenly - I was getting similar write / read speeds and then something changed (I don't have speed statistics for that).
One other thing to note is that if I plug in an external drive via USB I get write / read speeds the same.
This all makes me think that something has changed with the Ethernet port. Either it is malfunctioning or there is a cache issue etc. The problem is that I don't know how to do further diagnosis, or how to resolve.

  • Mac to pc problems related to 10.4.3?- sorry!

I have read and tried many of the suggestions people have offered for mac to pc problems. I used to be able to video chat from my imac in London to my parent's PC in New Zealand. I upgraded to 10.4.3 and now my problems have started. I can see them in the buddy list and I can see their webcam highlighted, so I assume my computer recognises they are on-line and have a camera plugged in. If they invite me and I accept, the view through my camera appears and then momentarily freezes and then a few seconds later I get the usual ".....did not respond". I can video chat with other friends on macs and I can view the 'appleu3test01' AIM test sight, so I guess I have all the correct ports open (I've checked often enough!!). I use an origo modem on an ethernet cable.
I have tried the usual stuff like repairing permissions, deleting plist files etc.
    Please can somebody help me?

Thank you EZ Jim and Ralph,
I will forward the links to my folks in NZ. I had suggested they try uninstalling and re-installing AIM but I now see that 5.9 is no longer available and the latest version, Triton, doesn't appear to support video yet?
Do you have any idea where I can get the old 5.9 and that extra bit of software that pc uses needed?

  • Ethernet problem (may be caused by Parallels)

Everything on my iMac was working fine, and I was using Parallels for Outlook and all of my usual Mac apps, including Safari. Then, internet access for the Mac apps stopped working, although internet access through Parallels continued to work. I rebooted several times, tried network diagnostics, and renewed my DHCP lease.
But here is where I am now:
    - My DSL works fine, because I can access the internet through other computers
    - The Ethernet connection itself works when I plug it into other Macs
    - When using Parallels on my iMac, I can access the internet
    - When using Mac applications on my iMac through my usual Ethernet connection, I can't access the internet. However, it works on this computer wirelessly.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get my iMac to access the internet through this Ethernet connection again, as it did before?

I had this problem once while I was travelling. I found I could use ethernet through Parallels or Mac OS, but not both. At the time, I blamed Comcast, and just kept rebooting until the ethernet worked in the OS in which I wanted it to work...
But, while I still blame Comcast I have since realized what I should have tried, so perhaps you can be the guinea pig. Parallels has various ways of contacting the internet. The default method is that it creates its own socket or something for accessing the internet, which has its own IP address. I wouldn't be surprised if this is creating the exclusivity you are observing--one ethernet cable equals one IP address so either Parallels has an IP address with internet or Mac OS does, but not both. So instead tell Parallels to use the Mac OS ethernet connection (Shared Networking). To configure this, I think you have to shut down Windows, and then, with the Virtual Machine window up, select Edit > Configure > Networking. See p. 157-8 of the Parallels User Guide.

  • Windows 8.1 Installation On Mac - Got a Problem

Windows 8.1 Installation On Mac - Got a Problem
    Hi everyone,
I'v researched a lot about installing Win on Mac but I still got a problem when everything seems to be fine.
I got a Macbook Pro Retina, Late 2013 with OSX Mavericks and Bootcamp 5 installed on. And for installing windows, I already got an empty 8GB USB Drive formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32). And I've prepared Windows 8.1 ISO in my Downloads folder.
During my last effort, I opened Bootcamp Assist and then Chose the options: "Create Windows 7 or later version installation disk" and "Download the latest windows support software from Apple". Then I chose my Windows 8.1 ISO location and my destination. When it finished ,I was expecting it to run windows setup. But it closed and nothing happened
When I opened BootCamp again, only the first two options were available as before and "Install or remove Windows 7 or later" wasn't.
Now ,what do I have to do exactly? (NOTE: I'm not a professional. So please answer in a simple way. )
Should I restart the Mac and Hold OPTION while booting to run Windows setup? I was thinking about it but I thought I might screw it up all. So I decided to ask it here to be sure.
Any help will be appreciated by heart!

    Hi Alcatrax,
I would recommend following the steps in this link in order to help you complete your installation of Boot Camp:
Boot Camp Help: Install Windows on your Mac
    https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/#apdecf0e4b6-b472-438d-881e-57c230b 1c250
    Prepare your Mac for Windows
Boot Camp Assistant helps prepare your Mac for Windows by creating a new partition for Windows and then starting the Windows installer. Optionally, you can install Windows using an external USB drive that contains a Windows ISO image downloaded from Microsoft and Windows support software.
Important: If you’re using a portable computer, connect the power adapter before continuing.
Insert an external drive into the USB port on your Mac and keep it inserted while you install Windows and Windows support software.
Open Boot Camp Assistant, located in the Other folder in Launchpad.
Select the option to install Windows, select other options you need, then click Continue.
Here are the other options you can choose:
If you want to install Windows from an external USB drive and you have a Windows ISO image, select the option to copy the image to an external USB drive. If this option isn’t available, your Mac doesn’t support installing Windows from an external USB drive.
If you haven’t already downloaded the Windows support software for your Mac, select the option to download it. In a later step, you’ll install the Windows support software on your Windows partition.
Follow the onscreen instructions for the options you selected.
When you’re asked to create a Windows partition, specify a partition size. If you have multiple hard drives in your computer, you can select a different hard drive and create a single partition on that drive, so that the drive is solely used for Windows.
Note: You can’t resize the partition later.
If you need help determining the best size for your Windows partition, refer to your Windows installer documentation. For Windows 8, create a partition that is at least 30 GB.
In a later step, you’ll format the Windows partition.
If you are using an installation disc for the 64-bit version of Windows, insert it into the optical drive in your Mac or the external optical drive. Otherwise, keep the external USB drive with the 64-bit version of Windows inserted.
    Click Install.
Boot Camp Assistant creates the Windows partition, restarts your Mac, then opens the Windows installer.
Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!

  • Can I download music from my PC onto my new iPhone and still have my iPhone use iTunes on my Mac without a problem? I have no music on the Mac because it is new. Can I download music onto iPhone on both PC and Mac?

Can I download music from my PC onto my new iPhone and still have my iPhone sync with my Mac without a problem?
I've had an iPod over a year and have not done much with it except download music onto it from my PC. Just recently have purchased the iPhone.  When I got my iPod I didn't have a Mac, but now I do.  I am really into my iPhone, so now I want to make sure that I don't do anything wrong. So can I connect my iPhone to both my PC and my Mac without it getting mixed signals and stop working.  I have no music on my Mac but plan to download music into iTunes on it.  So can I download music from both computers without problems onto my iPhone?

    StoneMountainGirl,
No. You can only music to your iPhone from one computer at a time.  If you try to load music onto it from a 2nd computer, it will erase the current content on the iPhone and replace it with whats in the iTunes library you are connected to,

  • My new macbook pro is giving me hardtime. even apple team is not being to solve it. they replace the motherboard first it didn't work. second time they formatted the computer and that also didn't work. every time my mac showing different problems.

my new macbook pro is giving me hardtime. even apple team is not being to solve it. they replace the motherboard first it didn't work. second time they formatted the computer and that also didn't work. every time my mac showing different problems.
At first my computer had issues. Once it go to sleep it will not back again. I dropped my laptop at apple store to fix it. After 10  days they returned my laptop saying they were no able to fix the problem so they replaced motherboard aiming if that might help. Acttually that didn't help.I had same issue again. I visited apple store again. This time they said they could fix, if I will allow them to format the harddrive. I said ok. They formatted it. It was working fine for few daysAfter few days compter is taking.even more than 15 min to shutdown. Now computer has another problem. It is being hang frequently like every 20'to.30 min.
I don't know what to do? I still have one month left on first year warranty. I have requested couple times to apple associates either to fix or replace or refund. They are showing me rude behavior. They are not understanding my situation. I am a student. I need to do lot of home work. Since last three month my mac book and apple associates giving me hard time. Any suggestions are welcome.

Contact Apple Customer Care - not Apple Care - Customer Support. Have your receipts handy and/or case numbers. Be patient, be calm, and tell your story just as you have here. I get the sense you are not in the US and don't have access to an Apple Store but are going to an independent shop. This makes using Customer Support all the more important. If phoning isn't viable, use registered mail.
Since time is running short, be prepared to purchase AppleCare to exennd your warranty 2 more years. Yes, you shouldn't have to do this, but it gives you added protection and more opportunities over the next 2 years to claim a replacement computer if you don't get one immediately. After dealing with a similar unhappy situation with a Mac in the late 1990s I finally got a replacement computer and reimbursed for the AppleCare policy.

  • Directly Connect Two Macs Via Ethernet

This has certainly been answered before, but a quick search didn't give any results. So here goes ...
I wanted to connect two macs via ethernet. I use the mount tool in finder "connect to server" all the time with machines on a network, but I've never done with with two macs directly connected.
So I connect them and my first instinct is to check the IP address of the machine I want to connect to. I then go to "connect to server" and type it in using the AFP protocol, but it doesn't work.
At this point I'm stumped and not sure what to do. I don't use the "network" item in the finder sidebar very often but I clicked it, and sure enough the machine I want to connect to was listed, and I was able to connect / mount.
So here's my question ... if I wanted to use "connect to server" tool, or even mount it manually with the mount command, how would I do it? Is it using AFP still to mount and the IP address is just bogus? Something else going on?

But I'm telling you I tried using the IP address ... here, let me try again ...
I find this address on the machine I want to connect to: 169.254.177.122
I put this into "connect to server" on the machine I want to connect from: afp://169.254.177.122
It spins for a while, then says it can't connect. Strangely, if I do a cmd-i on the machine in the network sidebar, it says: nfs:// automount ... into /Network
So are you sure putting in the ip should work? If so what am I doing wrong?
Okay ... plot thickens. When I cmd-i after I connect, it indeed says it is an AFP connect, but it gives the "local" name, say powerbook.local. But then, if I "ping powerbook.local" if gives me back the same IP I tried in connect to server. Huh?
    mbp:~ rjcarr$ ping powerbook.local
    PING powerbook.local (169.254.177.122): 56 data bytes
Weird. It isn't that big of a deal ... I just like to know what is going on.

  • Macbook Pro ethernet problems

    Hi All:
First post here. I have a 15" first generation MBP, and I'm having some ethernet problems. When my ethernet works, it works fine. However, if i were to shut down the machine and disconnect the ethernet cable, I cannot reconnect to the ethernet. In Network Preferences, Ethernet is not available in the pulldown and it appears gray-ed out in the Network Port Configurations. Restarting the computer, unplugging or resetting the modem doesn't help. Also, the PC link light on the modem will not be lit (but is lit when working).
The computer will not connect to any ethernet network, no matter where I am.
I've noticed if I keep resetting both comuter an modem a couple dozen times over a few hours, the PC link button will light, and upon next startup the ethernet connection will be restored. What do you guys think the problem is? It seems abnormal to me.

Had a similar situation with mine back in January, 2.16 Intel.
After spending 3 nights with my Cable ISP as the connection would drop-off, ethernet light flicker green, amber etc.
Took it back to Apple dealer, connected to Dealers network same problem. Cause:::: Motherboard had to be replaced, possible soder loose on the MO. Got it back in 10 days, haven't had a problem ever since.
Suggest you take back yours to have Apple dealer try this out.

  • My mac Mini has problem rendering images and video

    THE PROBLEM:
My mac mini has problem rendering JPEG image. There are strips on the images. Other images such as GIF, PNG, TIFF, and BMP are displayed nicely.
The images shown in the links below illustrate the problem:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/terencewong/71481156/
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/terencewong/73360989/
(Please note that this image is grabbed from my faulty Mac Mini and saved into TIFF. For uploading purpose, I converted it into JPEG on ANOTHER computer.)
For movies, AVI can be playback without problem. But when it is converted to MPEG, it looks like an untunned TV channel.
    FIXES TRIED:
I did erase and install 3 to 4 times using both the install disc and my Tiger Family Pack. All ended up with strips on the JPEG images and the generated MPEG movies.
I've also tried to flash the firmware to 113-xxxxx-124 using ATI's october 2005 universal ROM update, however, the ROM Revision shown in System Profiler is still 113-xxxxx-116 no matter how many time I reboot the system.
    INVESTIGATION:
Yesterday, I did some research and got to know that JPEG and MPEG are using DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) for decompression. And the ATI Radeon 9200 chip provide such a transform on hardware basis, which free the CPU from doing something else. Feel free to point out my inaccuracy.
    HARDWARE SPECIFICATION:
I bought the Mac Mini in the last Februray.
The system Boot ROM version is: 4.8.9f1
Display card is ATI Radeon 9200
    Chipset Model: ATY,RV280
    Revision ID: 0x0001
    ROM Revision: 113-xxxxx-116
    A POSSIBLE CONCLUSION:
I suspect that it is this part of the chip (the DCT) that is faulty.
Anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Many thanks!

Assuming that your display is tightly connected, thus the problem is not caused by something as simple as that, the fact that a full erase and install has not removed the problem would, I think, point to this being a hardware issue, and given that everyone's mini (with the possible exception of some of the latest ones) has the same video chipset as yours, and do not suffer the problem that you appear to, it seems very likely that your mini has a fault which is in need of repair.
If you have an Apple Store nearby, I would take it there to have it checked out - at the very least they should be able to replicate your problem using an in-store display, and if not, thusly suggest it's something external to the mini and concerning your display or something very unusual in the immediate environment of the mini. If you don't have an Apple Store in reach, I'd take the system to an Apple authorized service provider since at the present time it is under warranty.

let me know if this should be asked in a different community and ill repost it.
I have just changed my website host and have repointed my DNS to new host. However my macbook pro keeps taking me to the old host.
I have tried other computers and they all seem to go to new host , so it appears my mac is the problem.
I have tried clearing cache , history and cookies in the hope it would fix the problem but it hasnt.
    What am i overlooking??????
Im not IT smart so please reply in simple language .
    Any advice appreciated.
    thanks

If you moved your domain from one hosting service to a different one, and changed the the nameservers listing for your domain - which is what I think you're saying - then the "problem" really lies outside of your MacBook.
Changes to DNS entries, like the nameservers, can take anywhere from minutes to as long as a couple of days to propagate through the DNS system. How fast that change will show up for your ISP depends on how often their DNS servers update their caches and how often the hosting service updates their DNS entires to the DNS servers they are linked to. (Typically, hosting services are linked to DNS servers that update rather frequently - no less than once an hour.)  The other computers you used may be hooked to different DNS servers that get updated more frequently than the one your MacBook is using.
If you know the IP address of the new hosting site, you can plug that into the address bar of your browser and it should get you to the new host, no problem. Using a URL is going to rely on updated DNS information making through the DNS system.
    HTH,
    -Doug
