Mac/PC Setup Help

We are a PC/Mac schizoid house, without wireless yet. We need your help desperately. I've heard that Airport Express will
work with pcs. And that AX is all one house with two computers needs. So far so good. Besides the AX, what else do I need to purchase in order to configure a dreamy, simple wireless setup? You will be assisting someone who does not know what the differences are between LAN, broadband and ethernet. Please be gentle. I want a wireless macbook connection and I want it now. Many thanks. You just need an wireless card installed on each machine plus a wireless router. MacBook has a built-in AirPort Extreme card. Most PC machines don't. There are some VTCs that show how to configure wireless routers at YouTube. One is this one and, probably it's not very useful since it only shows part of it.

OK I have a decent budget for a Mac Pro setup and need help with the displays. The system will be used for video and photo editing. I'm torn between 3 23" displays and 2 30" displays. I really like the look and feel of that central display with flanking monitors. One of the things I will be doing is taking simultaneous video from 3 sources and pulling it together into one video. The final product will alternate between all three clips onscreen at once and transitions between the clips. If you had your druthers what would you choose?

Help! Time Capsule Setup Help: Airport Utility Not Finding Wireless Device

Hi folks, I'm hoping some of you more experience Mac techies can help me out. I just bought a (refurbished previous generation) Time Capsule, and I'm trying to set it up for the first time. I don't really have a complicated network configuration-- I'm just going to plug my cable modem into the Time Capsule and use it as the wireless router. The problem is, my Mac's Airport Utility isn't recognizing the Time Capsule after I plug the cable modem into it. The Airport Utility on my MacBook Pro is the latest version (5.5.2) or at least recent enough that it should be compatible with the Time Capsule. Since I can't get the Airport Utility to discover the Time Capsule, I don't know if it's the laptop or the Time Capsule.
Prior to trying to set up the Time Capsule, I was using a very old generation Airport Base Station. I decided to replace it with the Time Capsule because I wasn't getting the connection speeds I wanted, and the old Airport Base Station only offered WEP security. When I tried to configure the old Airport using the Airport Utility, I couldn't get my laptop to discover the router as well. But I just figured it was a problem with the old Airport.
As far as I can tell, the Airport card in my laptop can find wireless network connections just fine. It can see my old Airport Base Station as well as all the other routers in my range. It just can't use the Airport Utility to configure the Airport routers themselves.
I'm a little bit befuddled because it seems like setup should be a no-brainer. Either I've completely overlooked something really simple or something else is really wrong. I've set up a case to get help from Apple techs, but I'd appreciate any insight if anyone has some solutions to share.

Welcome to the discussions, Bryan!
I suggest that you "hard reset" the Time Capsule (TC) by holding in the reset button on the TC until until you see the amber light begin to flash more quickly and keep holding another 4-5 seconds when this occurs before you release the reset button.
Give the TC about 30 seconds to stabilize. If you are using wireless to configure the TC, open AirPort Utility and see if it now appears. If not, click the fan shaped Airport icon at the top of your Mac's screen and look for for a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx to join. That's the default network that the TC broadcasts so that you can configure it using wireless. Try AirPort Utility again.
If you have a spare ethernet cable handy, temporarily connect it from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC and open AirPort Utility. Once you have the TC configured, you can disconnect the temporary ethernet cable.
See if one of the methods above will get you going. Post back if you need more assistance.

If not, what happens if you remove the Apple ID on the iPad and then set it in Airplane Mode (allow a couple of minutes at this point) followed by re-adding the Apple ID ?
What, if any error messages are appearing on the Mac when you try to launch the App or Login to the iMessages server ?
Is the Apple ID linked to an iCloud account ?
In Messages 7 (Mountain Lion) this did not seem to be important but it seems it is in Mavericks/Messages 8

What haven't you backed them up? You should always have a back up of any important material on your Mac. Make one now:
Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

Your expectations are not based in reality.
Your G4 will not run iCloud. There will be no upgrade from Mobile Me to iCloud for you with that machine unless you do it manually, and only mail will work without further expenditure.

SLOW Mac Book Pro help appreciated.

Hello friends. I was searching the forums for help to understand why my Mac Book Pro is suddenly so slow... I found and ran etreCheck... so I'll copy and paste it here... the one item in read was that time machine is not configured.... anyway, here you go:
Problem description:
A few weeks ago, my Macbook pro started running slow… the spinning icon just keeps spinning… it takes so much longer to restart my computer now… 10+ minutes… more than 1/2 of my hard drive is free…
This problem is more evident when I go to close a webpage or program or when I sync Itunes.

Site setup help...

Hi -
I am new to using CS5 and I am having a few different problems. I am not sure but I think they all stem from improper setup. I had used dreamweaver mx 2004 to set up a few sites back in 2004-5 so I am am somehwat familiar with setup, however, besides trying out CS5 on a new computer, I also now have a QNAP 459+ NAS which I am using as the remote server (as opposed to a site through go daddy or other).
I have PHP and mysql running on my NAS, and I have also installed Xampp on my computer. (first off I was not sure that I needed this because I have a server (NAS), but I decided to install so because I was pretty sure that my local machine needed apache running in order to parse php scripts before they run on the server) In XAMPP control panel, I get the following:
Where it says apache is started but up above it does not say that it is running. When I try to view PHP code in dreamweaver from the local site, it just shows the little PHP emblem and does not process the code. It does process php if I access the page from the server by typing the address in a browser. It does not process at all in dreamweaver.
I also get the following errors in dreamweaver which I am not sure but I think are related:
"dynamically-related files could not be resolved because your credentials don't allow file activity on the server"
and
"An unknown error occurredwhile discovering dynamically related files. Retry."
I am not sure if I have multiple problems or just one which is causing all these symptoms, but any advice/help would be greatly appreciated!

I was curious about linux so i installed ubuntu and accidentally destroyed my mac partition. Id like to get mac back, please help!!! I have the snow leopard install dvd but it causes kernel panics. And i obviously cant download lion from the app store because i am using ubuntu.

I read your post as indicating you wiped the OS X partition from the disk.
If that is the case then, given the date of the machine I don't think you have network recovery, you should check to see if the Recovery partition is still on the disk (depends on how you wiped out the OS X stuff when you installed Ubuntu) by doing as Thomas said hold command R while starting up.
If the recovery partition is still there you're home free, just follow the screen prompts. If it is not there then the only recourse you have is to get it to boot off the original SL install disks. At what point during the boot procedure with the SL disks does the machine panic? And as was asked above, these are the SL disks that shipped with your machine?
If I misread your post then follow the advice of the previous posters.

Switching over from pc to mac and need help!

Ok so I plan on getting the new imac they are revealing today, but I'm not completely sure how to transfer all my music over from the pc and how the iPhone will sync as I've heard that the mac didn't recognize the iPhone after it had already been synced with a pc. I was just going to buy an external hd for the music and other things, but I really don't want to spend $100 plus for something that is only for transfer and some backup. I was considering burning cd's as well as I only have about a 250 song library and many blank cd's. Which choice or other option would be best? As for the not recognizing problem, is there something I have to do to like "format" it for mac and a feature I need to set up on the mac? Any help is appreciated.

The iPhone will show up on both a Windows-based PC and a Mac without needing to be reformated. From the File Menu in iTunes you can choose to sync your purchased music back to the computer.
In addition the Apple Retail Stores offer a service to move your files over.
You can burn approximately 150-200 songs per CD as a Data CD in iTunes, and import from there if you would like. You can set the CD Burning preference in iTunes in Windows by going to the Edit Menu, Preferences, Advanced Tab, then the burning section. Choose the option for "Data CD"

hello everyone, i just joined the discussions...i gotta say its awesome to see theres a big community of mac users that help each other...my congratulations for that, seriously.
i joined mainly because ive made up my mind in a 90% to buy an Mac Mini CoreSolo,80GB,512RAM,SuperDrive next week, that would be my first mac ever, after lots of years using pc's.
But i do have certain doubts about using a mini for some tasks, even though i already know multiple formats are compatible(phew!)
im not exactly an expert in computers, sorry if i ask silly stuff(or too many questions):
-does mac support torrent using/downloading?
-are there any mac-compatible p2p programs for downloading movies and music(such as eMule, morpheus, etc)?
-is mac compatible with any pc or emulated games? (winning eleven 9 is the one that im interested in)
-are there any mac based video players that support subtitles? if so, do they support .srt and .sub files?
-if i transfer my .doc files and .ppt files, will i be able to see them just like they were on windows? no strange symbols?
those are my questions... an answer for them would complete my decision of switching to MAC.

Many games have mac version (World of warcraft, Doom 3, Quake 4 etc. although i'm not sure about winning eleven 9). But get this (Drumrolls...):
With the new technology "Bootcamp" (A beta program for mac) you can run Windows XP (Without any restrictions) on a intel mac (Such as the solo)! At very fast speeds too!

Bootcamp allows you to create a Windows Partition so you can run windows XP exactly as you would on a PC without any set backs or speed decreases. All it takes is holding one key (once xp is installed) to boot of the windows section of your mac.
Are there any mac based video players that support subtitles? if so, do they support .srt and .sub files?
I'm not 100% about this one, but you can download realplayer, quicktime, divx player and windows media player all for mac. I'm nearly 100% sure you can find a mac program to open those file types. Plus, if you can't find any media players for OSX you can use bootcamp and run the files in XP.
If i transfer my .doc files and .ppt files, will i be able to see them just like they were on windows? no strange symbols?
Once again, I'm not sure about this one (I don't even own a mac yet-Used to have a G3 (old mac), planning to also get a solo and did all the research you can possibly do about them, and my freind has one- Why i know so much).
With that being said there is Windows Office for Mac which i'm pretty sure lets you open .doc files and .ppt files without any restrictions or weird symbols. In fact, the office version on a mac is much better then the one on PC (Freind has it).
Once again if there is a restriction (Which i'm pretty sure there isn't), you can always bootup in XP and open the files there.
With that being said Applworks and iWork (The mac versions of office) are soooo much better so i don't think you'll be using office much once you get a customed to them anyways.
