Mac - PDFs won't open in Safari

My employer uses a system that uses online PDF forms.  It's not working on my system.  Running MacOS 10.6.4, Safari 5.0.1 (6533.17.8), and Adobe Reader 9.3.4.  I have removed Adobe Reader app, including the plugin in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins, and re-installed Reader.  When I click on a pdf in the browser, it just downloads, and does not open in the browser.  How can this be resolved?

In Snow Leopard, Safari is a 64-bit application.  But Adobe hasn't updated their plugin to run in 64-bit mode; that's why it's not loading in Safari.
But you can force Safari to run in 32-mode, and then the Adobe plugin works as expected.
Here's how:
To do this,
In the Finder go to your Applications folder, select Safari and do File->Get Info
Check 'Open in 32-bit mode' in the General pane of that dialog, then close the "Safari Info" window.
Relaunch Safari
Now the Acrobat plugin will work as expected.
There is one downside to this: When running in 64-bit mode, if a buggy plugin (like Flash) crashes, Safari itself keeps running.  But in 32-bit mode, if a buggy plugin causes a crash, Safari itself will crash.
The real fix is for Adobe to update the plugin to run in 64-bit mode, since Snow Leopard has been out for over a year already!

  • Links within a pdf won't open in Safari, but work fine on Explorer, Firefox

I created a pdf with embedded links and posted it to my site. The links within the pdf work just fine with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, but they will not open with Safari, neither on a Mac nor on a Windows platform.
Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Try this. In the Safari window, click the Preferences icon right side of page.
    Then select the General tab.
At the bottom of that window, below, "Open links from applications", choose the option you want.

  • Pdf won't open in safari

    Hi,
Since Mountain Lion I have a problem with safari. I hoped that upgrading to Mavericks would help, but it didn't.
I cannot open pdfs within Safari on my iMac.
I already saw other threads that helped many people with solutions but for me these doen't help.
I already deleted the adobe plug ins from the library and there are no other plugins for pdf in this folder. In Safari from the menu "installed plug ins" I only see the WebKit built in and a plugin for Speed Download concerning the pdf files.
    I use OSX 10.9.0
    Safari 7.0
    Acrobat Reader 11.0.04
    I also have Glims installed.
Does anybody have a clue what I can do.
    Thank you for your support.

The plugin is where I said it was. You're looking in the wrong place. Let's try again.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin
A Finder window will open with that item selected. Delete it, then quit and relaunch Safari.

  • PDFs won't open in Safari; blank screen with Quicktime logo opens instead

When I click on a link to a PDF file within a Safari browser window, the PDF file does not open (in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader) as desired, or as it once did. Rather, now a new window opens with a Quicktime logo showing agains an otherwise blank white field and no other info is present. I can't seem to open any PDF files from any web source, nor can I right click to download them to my computer for opening later. I have read other postings on this subject, and upon opening my library/internet plug-ins folder, I find that no plug-ins at all are present.
How can I get Safari to open PDFs normally? I can't seem to find any relevant preference settings in either Safari or Acrobat which have any effect on this problem.
My operating system is 10.3.9, and my version of Safari is 1.3.2. My version of Acrobat reader is 7.0.9, and my version of Acrobat is 5.0.5. Thanks for any advice...!

    Call Apple Care.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years.   You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty before it runs out.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • PDFs won't open in Safari

I have now Adobe Reader 9 installed, along with the old Adobe 8.
For a while I was asked to point to the correct Adobe application. That quit working for unknown reasons. I can no longer open bank statements and other statements in Safari --just the spinning grey wheel
How can I tell Safari that Adobe 9 is the default reader?

    HI,
Open the Adobe Reader application then from the Menu Bar click Adobe Reader/Preferences
    Select "Internet" under Categories
Where you see: Display PDF in browser using
Click the pop up menu and select Adobe Reader.

  • Pdf files won't open in Safari running on a Mac

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard in preparation for Lion and ever since the upgrade, pdf files won't open in Safari.  I have Reader 9.4.5.  It opens documents that are on my machine, it just won't open in Safari, nor do the documents download.

MIght be helpful to disable Adobe plugin by going to Adobe Reader's Preferences -> Internet and unchecking "Display PDF in browser using".
Then dump the atrocious bloated Reader.

  • SOME pdfs won't open...

    Dear all,
My problem is kind of odd as you can see in the title...
So some pdfs won't open neither in web browsers (Chrome, Firefox and Safari) nor in Preview. The odd part is that some do open normally both in browsers and Preview.
I deleted the AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin but it doesn't solve the problem.
Anyone has an idea about what can be wrong?
    Thanks for your help,

  • My EKM Powershot Site won't open in Safari

I have an iMac.  It is running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.2.  I have an internet website with EKM Powershop.  It worked fine until a few weeks ago.  Then, at some times during the day it said I couldn't log in because of a problem with cookies but at other times it was ok.  Now I get the same message all the time and can't log in at all.  If I use Chrome it is ok but it is easier for my work if I have it open on both Safari and Chrome.  I haven't changed anything with my cookies and that doesn't seem to actually be the problem.  Can anyone help?

I had a page open, and saved it as an archive from Safari 3.2.1 on a dual G4.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks

5.1 is buggy, and the Apple Support Software also has to be uninstalled - and downgraded.
Better off with 5.0.x for now.
There are a dozen threads+ about 5.1s issues.
You can also expect some extensions and plug-ins could also be trouble.
And manually clean out every sub folder in AppData with Safari (prefs, history, web, etc) when moving to a new version. Same with Firefox 5/6/etc
I'd make sure to use CCleaner 3.09 and make sure that cleans Safari.

  • PDF is not opening  in safari

PDF is not opening in safari . I have adobe prof 9, and safari is the latest version.
Now, all I get is a black window and nothing loads.
    what should i do?
i have added ad ones to open pdf in safari, but still doesnt work

Carolyn, thanks -- your solution helped.
Actually, I've had the issue in OSX Lion, whereby the .pdf didn't launch in Safari . . . well, not launch fully.
In my Safari Browser, there would be a blue Q (Quicktime logo) that appeared momentarily, and then the 1st .pdf page (only) would show.  But, not say, the other 17 pages . . .
Anyways, in Lion I got a message "Cannot delete (Internet Plugins) folder because OSX needs it" or something like that --> so, I just deleted all the contents + quit Safari = solved!

  • PDF won't open - Safari 4

I'm trying to print a PDF statement from my bank but the PDF doesn't display. Clicking on the link opens another Safari window which shows it downloading... and then nothing. The PDF toolbar displays but clicking on the 'Open in Preview' and Save To Folder' doesn't work (just get that sound). It's worked before, and I'm quite certain with Safari 4 and OS X 10.5 8. Right-clicking only shows 'Copy Link'.

Try deleting the Adobe PDF plugin in the Library/Internet Plugins folder. Quit Safari first.
