Mac pinging other computers?

On my home network with nothing enabled such as file sharing etc. I notice on my windows firewall it keeps blocking requests from my mac, when the mac is just idle, the ip's mach so i know it is comming from my mac. Is this a security concern at all? Or is the mac just frequentley pinging my other computers?

I guess then that the obvious question is what do you use the home network for? Do you connect any of the computers to others, or are they all connected directly to a router? Nothing unusual about the configuration, like a DNS entry in the Mac's network settings that refers to one of the Windows PC's or anything like that? Any network connected printers, network storage devices, or things of that nature?

Does Itunes need to be open on my Mac for other computers to access the Library?

I have my Mac set to wake for network, but if I don't have Itunes open it seems none of the other computers can access the library. I don't keep Itunes open when I'm not using it, because I spend most of my time in Aperture and the software seems to compete for resources, with Itunes slowing my Aperture program down significantly. I need to reset my time capsule/airport every day - time capsule has green light but I don't see any wifi signal on my mac and other computers.

as many of you do, I use time capsule as airport, too...
It worked fine for 6 months or so after I bought the new time capsule. (I bought it in September 2012.)
Since the beginning of this year, I had to reset, and power off and plug it in almost every week, then now I need to reset and power off and back on again every day...
When I first set up the time capsule, I followed the instruction with the manual.
But, now I am so lost and don't want to reset every day for wifi connection.
Anyone has problem like me or knows how to solve this issue?

I have MacBook Pro OS X 10.8.4 & my roommates have PCs. (just in case if it helps...)

For PC it is important the wireless has names that are compatible.. short.. like 10 characters.. but 2-20 is fine. no spaces.. and pure alphanumeric.
Use WPA2 personal only.. with pure alphanumeric password .. again 10-20 characters should be fine.
The latest firmware is a dud. Go back to 7.6.1
Open the airport utility.. click on the TC and holding the option key click the actual version number..
Go back to 7.6.1 is simple.. just select it and away it will go.. ignore future requests for upgrade.. you can also tell the utility not to check weekly for updates. You will need 5.6 utility for this I think..
So do the firmware downgrade.
Then do a factory reset and follow the name information above.. for TC name as well btw.. wireless name/s and disk share name.. which by default is data and that is fine.
So some instructions in...
The Factory Reset.
Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
2. Download and install unpkg.

Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
You can also load airport utility into a pc and get access to all the settings. Untick the box for firmware updates.. it will still bug you occasionally.. regardless of the setting.. just ignore it..
You might still need to do the occasional reboot of the TC as well.

Mac Mini has intermittent network access - other computers on network ok

My inlaws just got a new Mac Mini and it is having networking problems. The network is currently setup with a cable modem which feeds a router that hosts several other computers, both Apple and PC. All of the computers are using DHCP for IP assignment. None of the other computers are having any problems. The Mini seems to get assigned an address correctly, even according to the computer's own network diagnostics, but internet access is spotty. Some webpages load instantly, some take up to 20s, and sometimes they don't load at all. I also tried manual IP assignment, but there doesn't seem to be any effect on the performance. Any ideas?

How is your MacMini connected to the router (wired/wireless(ly)?)

Take a look @ this thread and take a screenshot of your TCP/IP settings too (this would help us spot incorrect settings (if any))

That's unlikely. Verify that the Mini get its TCP/IP settigns manually (and correctly) and that you can ping the rest of the computers and your router successfully. Post back info to see how it's going.

I can not ping my Mac from other computers in my work group (both PC and Mac). I've been sharing a folder for a few years in a small work group and all of a sudden that folder can no longer be seen or mounted mounted on other computers in my workgroup. I am connected to the network and internet and I can ping other computers in my group. They can't ping me (get no response when pinging my ip address) and therefore are unable to see me to mount and share my folder.
I've double checked all my sharing setting, permissions and find everthing as it should be, but others are unable to mount my folder.

Can't see other computers on network through wireless/wired OK

Our wireless clients that connect through our AP541N cannot see other computers on the network. They can ping other computers by IP and host name and access the internet OK. Mapped network drives can be connected initially but are very unreliable and always end up disconnecting. Restarting the computer does not help. When these computers are wired they see the network as expected. Does anyone know why my wireless network would behave differently then the wired? The wired and wireless networks are on the same VLAN. The wireless clients are all Windows 7 systems. Thanks.

Thank you for posting. Go to Wireless Network Setup (VAPs) and see if Station Isolation is enabled for the SSID in question. From the Help menu:
When Station Isolation is disabled, wireless clients can communicate with one another normally by sending traffic through the AP.
When Station Isolation is enabled, the AP blocks communication between wireless clients on the same VAP. The AP still allows data traffic between its wireless clients and wired devices on the network, across a WDS link, and with other wireless clients associated with a different VAP.

WRT300N - Can't share other computers in Network

I have three computers connected to my network all using Windows XP O/S. When I try to access one of the other computers from the desktop home computer I receive a message that I do not have Administrative Priviledges. Cannot locate the other computers in My Network Places (same message) and cannot Ping other computers as well. If I look at My Network Places on the other two machines I can see the Linksys WRT300N router and can Ping 192.168.1.1. Windows Firewall is off. Security is Norton. Must have settings wrong somewhere but do not know where to start. I want to be able to share files and printers (sharing turned on in Windows) but at the end of my rope trying to figure this out. Firs of all you need to disable Norton antivirus on all the computers. And make sure all the computers are in the same workgroup. Click Here and follow the Instruction how to enable file sharing between your computers.

Well, you could install the drivers to the wireless printer in you other computers.

You can share it with other Macs under your control (not your neighbor's). You just need to be logged in under the buying AppleID for updates or to download again.

I'm assuming that on the Mac, the System Preferences -> Sharing -> Printer Sharing -> [X] HP printer -> Everyone can print is selected? That is to say, the Mac will allow anyone to print using the printer, and that you did not try to restrict who can print.
How is your network configured? Bonjour as a protocol will NOT cross a router boundary. If you have 2 or more subnets active with the PCs on one subnet and the Mac on another, that would block the PCs from seeing the Mac.
You could have multiple subnets if you have more than one router, such as an ISP provided broadband modem/router and another WiFi Router. If the PCs are talking to one router and the Mac is talking to another, that could be a 2 subnet situation. The additional routers must be put into bridge mode, which is done differently depending on the router. But the basics are to diable DHCP and NAT services on the secondary router(s) having just one active router on the network.
Also, using Bonjour Browser on my Mac, it is showing me that the printer is being advertised as using Internet Printing Protocol, so if that is something selectable on Windows, maybe you can bypass Bonjour on Windows.

Why can't I access my mac pro from other computers

I can't seem to access files from my Mac Pro from other computers on our network. It asks for a username and password, which it says is always incorrect. Any ideas on how to fix this? We have two main workstations that need to access a single Fire Wire 800 DRobo array that's connected to the Mac Pro tower.

File Sharing must be enabled on the Mac Pro. in System Preferences > Sharing
System Preferences > Accounts > Guest account must be present and must allow File Sharing, but need not allow guest login.
Although the login pane appears on the screen of the second computer, the login it is asking for is an account and password that is valid on the Mac Pro (the computer whose files you want to share). The number of bullets in the password field is fixed -- it has no idea how long the password is. Passwords are case sensitive.

If the HD is setup for Mac and plugged into the AE.. with file sharing on, it should work.
Try manually mounting the disk.
In finder use go, connect to server, and type in AFP://AEName or AFP://AEIPaddress.. where you replace what I wrote with the actual name or actual IP.
Later versions of Mac OS.. like ML for some strange reason have their preferences set by default to not show network drives.. change finder preference to see everything.

Mac OS X Lion Migration Assistant "looking for other computers"

I just installed Mac OS X Lion from Snow Leopard. I actually did a clean install and during the setup, I attempted to use the Migration Assistant to transfer my Time Machine Backup, saved on a Time Capsule, but after selecting to transfer from my Time Machine, it shows my Time Capsule but continuously is 'looking for other computers". The drive shows at the top and I'm able to click continue, even while it still searches, but once I click continue, i put in my Time Capsules passowrd, it continues to search and i can no longer click continue. It never stops searching.
I found article how to fix this in Snow Leopard http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3253?viewlocale=en_US but the setting are different in the Security tab in the Preferences. There is no 'Allow all incoming computers'. I have tried both with firewall on and off and neither way works.
Let me know if you have a fix for this, as I have 250 gbs waiting on my Time Capsule to be imported.

SImilar problem here, migrating from an old MacBook Air to a new one (directly, not via backup).
During the new Mac's initial setup, I followed all the steps properly as instructed (and made sure the original machine's Firewall was off). I tried both my main WiFi network and an ad hoc network, with Internet Sharing. (Ad hoc proved VERY finnicky to even get a connection. Miserable--it would work or it wouldn't, and I had no power over it: it would fail on the same config where it would succeed. A shame, because ad hoc would be the ideal, low-interference way to get the fastest WiFi transfer. And it's a method Apple's support site even suggests.)
No matter what I did, both machines just stuck at "Looking for other computers" forever. I spent hours trying to get it to work. I wasn't going to buy an ethernet adapter, nor a new external HD (with some third-party backup software as a workaround) just so I could power on my new Mac and have my stuff on it.
Eventually I gave up, installed without migrating, and then ran Migration Assistant after the fact. That DID connect OK (took about 1 hour per 10 GB and was done by morning).
But doing it that way was a mess: there was NO warning when I did the initial setup that I should not use my own name as the main account if I planned to migrate later. Who knew? I couldn't migrate after the fact because I had the same name on both machines. Well.... of course! Don't most people keep the same name? It's as though you're not expected to ever buy another Mac unless you're a newlywed woman. (None of which would be an issue if migration would happen during initial setup as it should.)
So I had to create a superfluous extra account with admin privileges, run Migration Assistant from there, replace the redundantly-named new account, and then find and delete the redundant account where it was stashed during migration. Lastly, I deleted the superfluous admin account as well. THREE accounts needed to be involved, for a process ANY Mac-to-Mac buyer will face. There was nothing special about my migration.
I don't think most users could even figure out all these steps.
A loyal Air user buying a new Air should not be such an incredible hassle. It "just doesn't work."
