Mac PPt 2011 is freezing in show mode

Hi all,
I have 2 MBP 17 inch last gen laptops. I use them for live shows where speakers use PPt. My machines are bootcamped and function on both sides using Windows or Lion OS. Most of the files I receive are created in Windows PPt versions. I recently had to run some of these out of the Mac OS since my first presenters were using Keynote as their software. There was not sufficient time to reboot the machines and resize output to the projectors.
In show, both of my machines, primary and backup, froze on the same slide in show mode during show. I was not able to arrow forward, back or escape. I was only able to cursor into the screen and use the onscreen navigation buttons to go forward. Once I went forward, I was able to use the arrow button again. I had cued through these presentations several times with no issues. But it seemed that once they sat on the first slide in show mode for more than 5-10 mins, they would freeze up. Usually it was on the same slide, nothing that I could discern unusual about this slide. I had compressed the images on it, it only had a series of auto transitions on it. I later had it freeze on another presentation while trying to find the problem. Once again it had sat in show mode for several minutes before I tried to go forward.
Any ideas?? I hardly ever use Mac PPt and this makes me entirely paranoid to ever use it as a backup plan.

Hello
I have been having this exact same problem for the last 2 weeks. As a trainer it's proving completely disastrous and frustrating as I don't run windows & so don't have another option!
I have reinstalled the software and it made no difference and spent an hour in the Apple store on Saturday trying to resolve the problem with no joy.
Any help or advice would be gratefully received. It must be an issue with the most recent software update?

  • 2011 MacPro freezes and shows several multiple pink lines

My 2-month-'old' MacBook Pro suddenly freezes and shows multpile vertical lines and makes loud beeping noises.
When I manually reboot, again it freezes mid-boot and I have to reboot again.
The second time I reboot, it successfully starts up.
This is the third time it has happened in 3 hours!!
See the video I uploaded on YouTube for a better idea of what I am talking about - http://bit.ly/kuBaFb
I sincerely hope there is nothing major wrong with the computer. :-/
It is running OS X 10.6.7

    Hello-
I had a static issue like this a few Years ago with a Sony Point and Shoot Digital Camera not long after its warranty ended. Unfortunately the fix was replacing the Optical Sensor which cost more than a newer model. Time to Visit the Genius Bar. Remember You have 30 days if bought at Apple Store too Exchange for a brand new unit or for a Refund.
    best, s
btw. Great Video Evidence, Plus There Seems to be A Very Subtle Saphire/Violet Saturation mixed with White, Your Window frames look slightly Violet throughout the video so Apple might have a bad batch of cameras or issues with the camera software struggling with discrepancies from the new hardware or just crap production or...? Keep the Faith & Everyone Updated & You'll Work It Out Soon

  • SOLVED: Mac Mini 2011 video freeze

I purchased a 2011 Mac mini 2.5 ghz core i5 about 5 months ago.  I added 8 gigs as soon as I got it. Now, all was good. The ram was excepted and everything ran well. After about a month in, the problem started. While watching a movie or editing music, the screen would freeze but audio would continue and the mouse would still move around. Every 30 sec or so the screen would unfreeze and freeze up again. I tryed EVERY thing! Smc reset, pram reset, fresh install, nothing worked.
I know it's not my hardware because I have windows 7 in boot camp which runs with out a hiccup, even after hours of gaming.
Lastnight I deceded to check the logs to see if there's something software related causing the issue. So I left consol running and waited for the problem to happen. While watching a movie, sure enought it started to freeze. While waiting for the breaks in the freeze I was able to see that iTunes was cause erros. I forced quit iTunes and the computer stopped freezing. Ever since that, I have left iTunes closed and haven't had a freeze. I opened iTunes and watched a movie (just to test my theory) and sure enought not 2 seconds it starts to freeze.
I hope apple solves this very frustrating anoyins.
    Thanks

Great work, thaks for the post/fix.report!

  • Mac Mini (late 2012) freezes after sleep mode

My Mac Mini (2.5 GHz Intel Core i5) will not respond or wake from sleep. I can press the power button and the screen appears but my mouse and keyboard is frozen and I am unable to anything except hold the power button to shut it down. This is a recent occurrence over the last 2-3 months. It was sporadic but now it seems to be every time.
I saw one thread that suggested it may be a problem with the memory upgrade. I upgraded the 2GB (1GBx2) to 8GB (4GBx2) when I purchased the Mac Mini in November and just started having the problem recently. The memory is PNY  1333 MHz DDR3 memory modules.
I've reinstalled Mountain Lion and ran several permission repairs with Apple Disk Utility and Drive Genius. I have also run several different Virus scans and nothing unusual was found.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Target Display Mode iMac 27 mid 2011 with Mac Mini 2011 bootcamp

    Hello,
I can't seem to use Target Display Mode with Bootcamp.
    My configuration:
    Imac 27" mid 2011 with osx 10.8.4
Mac Mini Server 2011 with osx 10.8.4, bootcamp 5 and Windows7
Both are connected via Apple genuine Thunderbolt cable (2m).
When I boot the Mac Mini into OSX then Target Display Mode works perfectly and I can see the osx installed on the Mac Mini on the iMac display.
However, when I reboot the Mac Mini into Bootcamp (windows7 x64) I can't put the iMac in Targt Display Mode and get to see Windows 7 on my iMac screen.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924#8
The following article says that this should work, however once I reboot osx on the Mac Mini the iMac leaves Target Display Mode immediatly and will not return to Target Display Mode.
Any advice? I contacted Apple Support and a Sr. Enginner said it should be supported and he's checking with a higher tier.
    Thanks

    Yes, it does.

If you just got it back and it isn't fixed or something else is wrong with it take it back and have them do the repair correctly.

  • Keynote on Mac freezes on play mode when a shape has action effect

    Hello.
Keynote freezes on play mode when a shape has action effect, and the only way to get out is rebooting my Mac!, this is so terrible!.
    Keynote 5.3
    Mac OS X 10.8.4

Is there chance that the screen saver might be the problem?
    To answer the question:
I bought Keynote about two weeks ago through the Apple Store, so I'm going to list all apps related to graphics (from recent installed to older):
EazyDraw 3.5 (old version), not an identified developer.
    Fotor (from the Apple Store)
    XQuartz (X11)
    Inkscape
    DivX Plus Player
    Flip Player
    Microsoft Silverlight
    Join.me
    TeamViewer
    Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection
    Snagit (from the Apple Store)

  • Mac Mini 2011 boot camp freezes on loading windows screen.

I bought my mac mini 2011 server, have upgraded it to mountan lion and mountain lion server and wanted to install windows on it. I have microsoft windows 7 professional OEM system builder edition on a dvd, a LG portable super multi blue rewriter, a corded mac keyboard with number pad, a HP mouse, and a hdmi monitor. I have not upgraded any features on the mac, it is original.
I updated all software, well except a printer driver that I don't have the printer of anymore, and ran boot camp. I tried to partition my entire hard drive for it, however that did not work. I then tried to partition half of the first hard drive and that did not work either. I tried unpluging the mouse and keyboard and it still won't work. I bought the copy off of amazon and it appears to be legal. I just always get stuck on the "Windows is loading" screen. The loading bar, a white band across the bottom of the screen, always goes across the whole screen once fast, then makes it's way to the farther left side of the screen and then hangs there indefiniteley.
Any suggestions? more questions about the situation?

Mini mini, there are problems with mini and esp. server version.
What I think others have said: cannot use OS X Server, had to use Mac OS X client
External LG is not supported. Doesn't come with an internal SuperDrive though does it?
    The system builder is fine.
Just one story (there are others, I need to collect all the "Mac Mini Tips" together, I can't remember and keep them straight otherwise.
HDMI audio in Windows 7 64 bit
reinstalled the Intel video drivers and audio worked immediately.
My config:  2011 Mac Mini 2.3, Intel 3000HD video
           .   .       upgrade to 8GB ram
Samsung 8000 series LED TV connected with HDMI
Memorex external BluRay writer(USB only power)
After partitioning drive with boot camp and reboot, install Windows 7 with install wizard.
When asked whether to allow automatic updates say 'no', then complete installation and run boot camp tools for Windows.
Because the network driver gets installed prior to the Intel video driver, Windows will install the Windows Update Intel video driver which breaks HDMI audio.
When auto updates are off, the Intel video driver that is correct gets installed last.
HDMI audio works with this driver.
Apple should install the Intel video driver first and it would solve this problem.
I now have full blown 3D BluRay support on the MacMini with TruHD audio, fantastic!

    - There are other stories where Microsoft Windows will automatically install video drivers (iMac) and cause trouble. Sometimes in an innocuous security patches rolled out monthly Tuesday.

  • Mac Mini (2011) can't boot, no screen display.

Hi, my mac mini (2011) finally won't startup today.
It was since two weeks ago, the mini goes freeze very frequently, I discovered that the fan speed was always below 2000rpm, meantime, the CPU temp was around 80-90 degree, it is around 25 degree in the room, last Friday I installed a software named smcfancontrol, which can manually speed up the fan, and it seems better, and the computer runs faster, I think the CPU is running in full speed.
Today, I opened a video to watch, after about ten minutes, the computer goes freeze again, and of course I force powered it down by pressing the power button on the back, then the tragic came:
    - when I try to boot up the machine, the front light turns on, then off with a "ka" sounds like the hard drive shutting down(force powering it down)
    - after around two seconds, the light goes on again, and the fan smoothly goes to full speed, there is nothing shows up on screen, as well as no apple boot up sound.
    - I tried to reset smc (power down, unplug power cable, wait 15 seconds, plug in power cable, wait 5 seconds, power on), no luck.
    - I tried to reset pmu (at least internet says it's pmu, it seems apple website did not mention how to reset pmu on mac mini, power down, hold power button for five seconds, power on), no luck
    - I also tried to unplug the memory, try with every single one to boot, no luck
    - last Friday, when I can still boot up the computer, I thought there might too much dust, I removed the fan and cleaned it up, it looks a small piece of plastic on the fan plug were damaged, but the smcfancontrol app still can control its speed, therefore I think the fan is OK.
    - during many retry, there was one time, the fan goes full speed at startup, with no front light off,(my current status is fan goes to full speed gently).
    - the computer is connected with an AV amplifier, then output to a plasma TV, when the computer is powered off, the TV displays a background of amp, when I startup the computer, although no video output from computer, the TV goes to a "No Signal" status, I dont's think this is related to my problem.
the computer is out of warrentee, but bought only for less than two years... I really want it back to work, can someone help me? many thanks!
wish you all have a good day.

Hard to troubleshoot when you can't turn on the computer on any more.  One option is to bring it to an Apple store to have them look at it.  They will tell you what is wrong and how much it will cost to fix.  I have never heard of them charging for a diagnostic and an estimate.
If your CPU was running hot all the time and your fan had small plastic pieaces, in my opinion, something got fried.  The mini is so compact, that the excessive heat may have also over heated your hard drive causing thd "ka" sound.
If you decide to continue in to use a Mac Mini as a media server, may I would suggest using iStat to monitor it.  I use iStat on my 2011 Mac Mini Media Server to monitor CPU usage, all sensors, and internet incoming and outcoming.

  • Mac Pro 5,1 Freezes & Pinwheels at Boot, Corrupt Font to Blame?

Hello, all. This is my first post on the Apple Support communities as I have a very strange issue that seems to be nowhere else on the Internet, so I'll ask it here before running off to my local Genius Bar.
I'm running a Mac Pro Mid 2010, with a 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Xeon and 16GB DDR3 RAM. The only aftermarket/third-party component I have installed is a Blackmagic Intensity Pro internal video capture device, which, to my knowledge, works perfectly.
I am currently typing this on my third re-install of Mountain Lion, as I have not been able to advance to the login screen after I boot my Mac Pro, due to freezing and the spinning pinwheel.
I may have an idea what's causing this issue, but I'm not sure how to pinpoint it, remove it or figure out what to do. It may be tied to a conflicting Geneva font, located in (my name) > Library > Fonts. This is not the "True" Geneva font, as that is located in the System > Library > Fonts folder on my primary hard drive. This "impostor" Geneva has a ".ttf" file extension while the original Geneva's extension is .dfont.
Here's an image of the window that pops up:
Before the problem happened (and before the boot freezing happened), I selected "Move To Trash" and thought nothing of it, seeing as though it's a fairly standard warning message.
On my first re-installation, I selected "Move To Trash". I did not see the font in the trash but had other files there and securely emptied it. I rebooted shortly afterward and the system locked up/pinwheeled before the login screen. On my second re-installation, I selected "Ignore Conflict" but I ended up with the same result. Notice the impostor "Geneva" seems to have a lock near its filename. Maybe this is what's holding it up.
The only other common message OSX gives me on each installation is a prompt to install a Java SE 6 Runtime, but it seems to be through the standard Apple Software Update so I doubt it's anything that would corrupt an installation.
These font conflicts stem from fonts that I transferred over from my old PC when I first bought my Mac Pro after Christmas in 2010. No issues have surfaced until now other than minor aesthetic issues that were easily resolved.
Now, I'm left with a dilemma (which is what brought me here). I need to find a way to resolve this, as I think this issue may be what's holding my computer up. I've done research and found that tampering with system fonts will cause your Mac to crash at startup. I'm a freelance video producer so this has been causing me more than a few headaches when attempting to do my work, so I'm scurrying for a result ASAP.
I've tried nearly every method of fixing the issue...repairing my boot disk, verifying/repairing permissions, resetting my password and resolving ACL conflicts,  unsuccessfully trying Safe Mode, resetting PRAM and now re-installing Mac OSX. This is most likely an issue on the OS end --- my hardware is working properly, its S.M.A.R.T. status is verified, and permission/disk repair/verify shows no errors. I also have a Boot Camp partition that runs flawlessly --- I can even access folders and files on my Mac from the Windows parition, so it's probably not an issue of a dying hard drive. There's something screwy preventing me from logging in, and short of the first boot after re-installing Mountain Lion, there hasn't been a way to log in normally.
I'd rather not reformat my entire startup drive because of what could be one file conflict, as I have a lot of personal data and presets I'd like to keep. Nevertheless, I have an appointment at my Apple Store's Genius Bar set up for Friday but I'm leaving it as a worst-case scenario as I'd much rather pinpoint these issues myself.
If you've made it this far, thank you for reading this long post. I wanted to be as specific as possible regarding the strange issues happening with my Mac Pro. Hopefully someone has a suggestion out there that doesn't involve reformatting as I'm 90% sure this boot error has to deal with this system font conflict. The other 10% wonders what needs to be done.
    Thanks in advance!

First check that you still can't boot as usual. If you can't, see below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as certain other aspects of the configuration that may have a bearing on the problem. Don’t be alarmed by the apparent complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode, if possible. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. If you can only boot in safe mode, you can still use this procedure, but not all of it will work. Be sure to mention that in your reply, if you haven't already done so.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. The commands are safe and do nothing but produce human-readable text output, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. I am not asking you to trust me. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB="/u*/*/Pl* -c Print"; { echo Loaded kernel extensions:; kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'; echo $'\nLoaded user agents:'; launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'; echo $'\nInserted libraries:'; launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo $'\nUser cron tasks:'; crontab -l; echo $'\nGlobal launchd configuration:'; cat /e*/lau*; echo $'\nPer-user launchd configuration:'; cat .lau*; echo $'\nGlobal login items:'; $PB /L*/P*/loginwindow.plist | awk -F'= ' '/Path/{print $2}'; echo $'\nPer-user login items:'; $PB L*/P*/com.apple.loginitems.plist | awk -F'= ' '/Path/{print $2}'; echo $'\nSafari extensions:'; $PB L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist | awk -F'= ' '/Bundl/{print $2}' | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; printf "\nRestricted user files: %s\n" $(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); echo $'\nExtrinsic loadable bundles:'; cd; find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist" | egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|print|SoftRAID" && echo ${d%/Contents}; done; echo $'\nUnsigned shared libraries:'; find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b $1 | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v $1' {} {} \; -print; echo; ls -A {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}* L*/Fonts; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A TextEdit window will open with the output. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    { echo "Loaded system agents:"; sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo $'\n'"Login hook:"; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo $'\n'"Root cron tasks:"; sudo crontab -l; echo $'\n'"Log check:"; syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output as text, not as a screenshot.
Please post the contents of the TextEdit window, not the Terminal window.

  • Powerpoint 2011 Crashes When Entering Slideshow Mode attached to Projector.

My MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 crashes every time I try to enter slideshow mode in Powerpoint 2011 if I am driving a projector.  It does not crash if I enter slideshow mode without the projector, of if I connect to the projector but don't enter slideshow mode.  I give a lot of presentations, so this is a real problem.

Confirm I have had the same problem with Office 2011 Powerpoint. Crash to unresponsive black screen, must force off with power button. 15" Mid-2010 MacBookPro 6.2 MC373C/A 4GB RAM and Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Began slowly/intermittently in July when I was working daily with the pptx. Was then crashing with a 2nd monitor attached going into slide show mode. Crash problem became more frequent over time.
Now the crash occurs with certainty in almost any configuration - slide show with 2nd monitor/projector, or without any monitor/projector or other peripherals attached, and with either the battery or 110v MagSafe power supply.
I have tried creating an alternate user account - and the problem again starts randomly and acelerates in frequency.
Uninstalled and reinstalled Office2011 for Mac as per MS instruction support pages. Same crash, on launch , when opening a file after launch, or when clicking onto a different slide if a successful launch does occur.
Powerpoint at this time and in this condition is unuseable.
Too bad because I have another presentation to prepare and give tomorrow, and I have already paid for and now depend on the MBP, and at this time the MSOffice2011 software.
If anyone has solved why this problem is occurring (I see it occurs frequently enough that similar questions appear in many forums) - please share your insights and a solution if you have one? ThankYou.

  • External iSight - no sound with Mac mini 2011

    Hello,
I'm trying to connect External iSight camera to Mac mini 2011 (using FW400 -> FW800 adapter cable) but I can't get microphone sound to work...
When I open system prefs>sound>input, it shows iSight is connected but system will freeze for a while (like it's looking for iSight) on openning.
When I try open Skype video preferences, it shows me video from iSight with no problem, but sound doesn't work.
Can anyone give me some advice?

    You're welcome.
    (1) Your new info indicates to me that there is probably something wrong with your cable(s), adapter(s), Mac mini's Firewire, or your external iSight itself.
You can eliminate most of these by troubleshooting with other cables, adapters, Firewire devices, and Macs as suggested in the info from my earlier link.
If no Firewire device you test on your Mac works with any connecting cable, resetting the Mac's Firewire bus may help. Apple's "how-to" article has been archived in this link.  (This link may be slow to load.)
If you have trouble displaying the archive page, here is the pertinent extract on how to reset the bus:
... If the issue persists, try these steps:
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).
Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.
Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.
If an individual third-party device leads to the issue, contact the manufacturer for more information and further assistance.
NOTE: Some users who try FW reset forget that "all" cables include the power cable.  Disconnecting power is important.
    (2) If your troubleshooting shows that your external iSight itself is the problem, you can decide whether you want to have your old serviced.  If you do not have access to a local Apple-Authorized Service Provider, you can obtain cost and Apple contact info from http://www.apple.com/support/isight/service/
    (3) Rather than spend more money on your old iSight, you may decide to consider a new webcam.  A new Mac compatible USB connected cam with a current warranty will be a faster fix, and it may be lower cost.  Some examples are at http://mac-compatible-web-cam.com. Moreover, compatible USB connected cams are not subject to all the same conflicts that sometimes effect external iSight.
Unless you already have a separate microphone for your mini, you can decide whether to buy separate mic or look for a new camera that has an inbuilt mic.
