Mac Preview does not save PDFs correctly

When I try to save a webpage as a PDF using the Print dialog box on my Mac, ("Save as PDF"), the PDF is distorted. The first page is OK but on the second page, the text displays in a larger font and the text is cut off on the right. Apple tech says this is a browser problem, as it does not happen with Safari.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Preview does not support PDF features

I have generated a number of PDF files in Adobe Acrobat that are questionnaires. The intent is to have the users fill out forms, click radio buttons and check boxes within the PDF and using buttons embedded on the questionnaire email them back to me. I have run into many problems with my questionnaires by Mac OSX users. It turns out when they open my Questionnaire (PDF) Preview launches instead of Adobe Reader. Evidentially Preview is the default application for PDFs. Preview does not support "calculations" "actions" for buttons including "submit a form" and does not auto font size in the forms they fill out.
Is there something in Preview that causes this issue that preview users need to do? It clearly appears Preview is not a good substitute for Abode Reader that is free and the standard for PDF viewing.

    Bobbbo wrote:
The issue I have run into is that Adobe has generated a way that you can distribute forms to a large group of people, they can in return send back the data that they filled out. Acrobat can then tabulate the data automatically. It is a very powerful tool.
I don't doubt it. However, it is a purely Acrobat solution. I'm sure there is other software that can do the same thing. Have you considered a web site instead? You could build an HTML page to distribute to people and it would have all the same features. Plus, it would work with any web browser.
The problem I have is Apple has decided to make Preview their default PDF reader application. When a Mac users opens the PDF file things may not work and they do not understand why. They get frustrated and quit filling out the form, therefore locking out getting data from all Mac users. This is an unnecessary burden to put on Mac users!
Then why don't you pick a method that would work with a stock MacOS X machine?
Adobe Reader is free so why compete with a free application??
Adobe Reader is free for end users to download. If Apple included it as part of MacOS X, the would have to pay Adobe many millions of dollars. Furthermore, while Acrobat Reader does have many nice features, it is a slow, bloated behemoth that fewer and fewer people want to use anymore. That is why there are so many other PDF viewers these days - people don't like Acrobat Reader.
I just think they should not have a fully functional PDF reader as the default application for PDFs.
Preview is fully functional. But Apple can't read Adobe's mind and support every new feature that Adobe throws in to try to keep customers. Your PDF solution is an Adobe solution. Adobe software just isn't as ubiquitous as it used to be. Times change. I suggest you look into some other method of form distribution, such as HTML and Javascript.

  • Illustrator CS6 does not save PDFs to artboard

I have had this problem more than once. The first time it happened, I uninstalled AI and did a fresh install which fixed it for a short time. When I save a PDF out of AI, it does not save to the artboard constraints.
This is a screen shot of my AI document which has 2 pages.
When I save as PDF, this is what the file looks like:
    (Pg 1)
    (Pg 2)
After the original file has been saved (incorrectly) I can open it and save it again and it will be fine. Any ideas?

Here's my test of a similar file in AICS5
    and here's the PDF
Got the same in AICS6 with the second artboard as a copy of the first as you've done.

  • Preview does not save changes?!

I love the way I can easily manipulate photos using preview.
But, a strange thing occurs, here the workflow:
    1) I select photos and drag them to Preview
    2) I choose "Rotate" and it rotates the photo and the little red dot in the upper left corner indikates (with a circle/dot) that the file is modified (all great)
    3) I press CMD+S and the file is saved (the red dot in the upper left corner indicates the file was saved)
    4) I close Preview and open the file again and it is not rotated (as if Preview did not save any changes)
    What am I doing wrong?!

Eh, now that's a pitty. So I guess this is a bug then. -is Apple aware of this?
I guess I will use iPhoto from now on, and I was so happy to be able to do such simple things in lightweight Preview.
I don't want to bother with "Save As.." and similar, since these take too much time. The CMD+S would be great, anything more, I can switch to iPhoto.
I wish Apple instead of introducing all these new features in 10.5, would just polish the Tiger (bugs like this, add devices for iSync etc...).
Should I report this bug elsewhere or will Apple read this?
By the way, thank you for your replies!

  • Preview does not display pdf properly

I have OS X 10.5.8 and Preview 4.2. Preview will not display a bank statement properly. Most of the content is missing. I initially thought this was the bank's fault, but the pdf statement displays OK on my work Mac using Adobe Acrobat Professional. On Preview, howerver, at work (OS X 10.4) it also does not display properly.
Can anyone suggest a fix, or does Apple read these discussions...? Thanks. Graham

"Preview is meant for previewing PDFs generated by OSX applications for printing.
OSX uses its own code to generate and display PDFs, not Adobe's code.
Adobe has been adding features to its PDF code that is used by some non-Apple software.
PDFs generated by such software may not display correctly with Preview, but will work with the latest Adobe Reader."
(courtesy of Malcolm Rayfield in this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/12739728#12739728 )
So, download and install the latest free Adobe Reader on your home Mac for these statements.

  • PDF form created in Acrobat X - Mac Preview does not wrap text

This is driving me crazy, please excuse me if this is rudimentary -
I created a document in Word that will be a daily form filled out and saved as individual pdf's.
In Acrobat X, I opened this doc & created a form.
If I open with Acrobat reader or X, the form holds all parameters including "shrink to fit" with text...
But, Preview clips the text... it centers text like I requested but doesn't adjust font size to fit...
Is there a step I'm missing? This form needs to be filled out correctly in Preview - is this possible?
    Thanks

You should NEVER expect that Apple's Preview application will be able to give the quality of preview you'll see in Acrobat. Apple chooses to implement or not implement the parts of the PDF specification that they choose.
You should complain about this in the Apple user forums because they developed the application, not Adobe.

  • Preview does not print PDFs to HP Laserjet 200

I am unable to print PDF's from Preview to my LaserJet 200 via either wierd or wireless. Adobe Reader printed fine as does Adobe Acrobat pro.
    Word also prints fine.
Everything is updated to latest releases.
When I press Print on Preview, the print queue in OS X is activated, the panel on the printer states Printing Document but nothing happens and I have to power off and on the printer. I have also reset the printer to factory defaults but nothing seems to make this work.
This has only happened since the last updates to OS X on 11 Feb 15. I wish Apple would properly test these things before releasing as it just wastes my time trying to get it working...
    Any ideas anyone?

  • Issues logging data - does not save the correct data

    I am having 2 issues:
    1. I am having issues with my logging occuring at the right time.
I have a few things occuring based on the state of 'Injection'. In the case of logging, the following needs to happen:
When injection is 'True' nothing should occur. When injection goes 'False', data logging should occur. If my injections are 'continuous' the boolean goes:
True, False, True, False. I would have 2 logging sessions during both 'False' occurrences. What appears to be happening is that the logging occurs during the 'True' state. I am not sure why.
    2. The logging needs to save a certain amount of samples to the text file. If my 'False' state lasts for 1 second, I need to have 1000 samples. If 2seconds, 2000 seconds, if 1.5seconds, 1500 samples..you get the idea. At current I am only getting 100 samples at a time, at dt of .1
    Code below:

i seem to have issues w my UI updating when I specifiy samples to read. It appears to lag, which is OK, as long as the timing is still correct..
Can I acquire continuously, without specifing how many samples, but specify how many samples to read?
DAQmx Read will return the number of samples requested immediatly if they are available otherwise it will wait for the number of samples requested to be avilable and return the number of samples requested.  This of course, means that the loop will only iterate no faster than "number of samples * Sample rate". (probably what you mistook for "Lag")  IF the number of samples requested is not available before the timeout period DAQmx Read will return with the number of samples available and a timeout in the error cluster so your calling code can handle the exception intelegently.  If the number of samples requested is -1 DAQmx Read returns the number of samples available now without waiting at all.
    Clear?

  • Preview does not paginate PDF

I have downloaded a PDF of a big map and am trying to print it with Preview app.
However, Preview will either scale the image down to a page, or print one page clipped, but I can't find a way to get it to paginate printing all the pages needed to cover the whole image in actual size.
Is there a way to paginate print of a large image PDF?

    GraphicConverter will do it.
I suppose that you could do several crops in Preview, but that is awkward.

  • Preview does not sum column data in PDF forms

Preview is way better than Acrobat for most purposes, but it has some basic limitations that just make it hard to use. for example I have to use this form that asks you to enter $ in a table, however Preview does not sum the column, it just puts a "0" in. Why doesn't Preview add? Plus, this default behaviour makes it harder to paste in my own number as there is a zero in the way. At least it would be nice if it could just remove the 0 and leave me with an editble section. Is this just the product of a badly created PDF form or, as I suspect, a limitation of Preview?

I'm having the exact problem. I have a fillable PDF form that has many checkboxes. Saving the pdf (doesn't matter whether it's 'Save', 'Save All', or 'Save As' under the File menu) will clear/reset the checkboxes in the file.
Anyone know of a workaround for this? Or, is Apple fixing this soon? I really don't want to get Acrobat Pro 9 (well, I don't think it's compatible with Snow Leopard yet anyway)
If you'd like a sample PDF file to try it out, let me know.
    Thanks.

  • Reader Plug-in not printing PDFs correctly after InDesign Install on Mac OS 10.9.5

Installed InDesign trial yesterday. Ever since, no matter what browser I use, if I try to print PDFs from a browser, if the pages are in portrait mode, it will display them in portrait mode within the browser, but when I go to print them, the page appears in landscape and the bottom of each page does not print. It doesn't matter whether I select portrait or landscape mode. The page in the preview does not rotate. Some of the websites I use do not allow saving of a PDF, only viewing it in my browser window, so I can't save and use Preview to try to print it.

Are you using Adobe Reader or Apple Preview to print PDFs?
You should not use Apple Preview to do anything with PDFs as it is not a reliable PDF viewer. Use Adobe Acrobat or Reader for PDFs only.
Do you have installed any PDF plugins? On the Apple PDFs are shown without any plugins because their graphic engine Quartz is based on PDF, but it does not support completely every PDF standard, so it is better to use Adobe Acrobat or Reader. (But Apple Preview has been improved in the newest upgrades from Apples OS, so it is much better than before.)

  • C4700 scan does not save on mac 10.9.4

When I scan something from my macBook Pro (OS 10.9.4) it does the overview and says it scanned the sheet, but it does not save. It's set to go to my desktop, but is no where to be found on the mac.
Is there a download I need to load for 10.9.4? Anyone have the link? Or is another issue, and how can I correct it? (I seem to remember this happening before and it needed an update from HP.)

Welcome to the HP Forums AnnieRie,
I read your post, which indicates that the scans don't save on the Mac 10.9.4.
I can help you with this.
The drivers for Maverick are installed by the Apple Updates. The HP Scan software isn't available for Maverick.
If you have a older version, this will cause the issue you are experiencing.
I have provided a document on How to Scan: OS X v10.9. Use the Apple software for scanning.
If the issue persists then check the driver name that is installed for the printer. The Airprint driver might be installed instead of the Printer's driver. (usually defaults to Airprint)
Click the Apple menu and then click System Preferences. Click Printers & Scanners, highlight the printer name on the left side and on the right side of the screen should show the name.
If the printer name shows Airprint then that is the Apple drivers, delete it and add the printer name back in from the list. Click the - sign to delete the driver and then click the + sign to add the driver, might have to click the drop down to select the printer's name to add it in.
Here is a alternate driver provided by Apple, if you are still having issues scanning. HP Printer Drivers v.2.16.1 for OS X.
If you need further assistance, let me know.
    Have a wonderful day!
    Thank You.
