Mac printing - "printer is in use" forever

On or about Dec 30, 2014, my MacBook (MacOS 10.8.5) suddenly could not print to either my HP Officejet 6100 or Deskjet 6980, via network printing.  Both printer queues would show "printer is in use" forever, when any document is printed.
I did the usual removing the printer, and re-adding.  I added the printer as an IP address in System Preferences, with Protocol Line Printer Daemon - LPD, and with protocol Internet Printing Protocol. Upon clicking Add, I get the error box:
Unable to verify the printer on your network.  Unable to connect to 10.x.x.x due to an error.
If I go ahead and Add, same result "printer is in use" for any doc printed, and nothing prints.
If I Add the printer despite the error above, then select the printer in System Preferences - Printers, Utility, Open Printer Utility, the HP utility runs fine and connects to the printer!!    The HP utility shows supply level.  The Test page prints fine!!
I even re-installed MacOS 10.8.5 - no help.  I also updated the Officejet 6100 firmware from the hp.com page - no help.
Finally by luck I tried MacOS System preferences, Add, IP, Protocol: HP Jetdirect - Socket, and now the printers are working again!
Come on HP, you need to give a little more help here.  It should not be so hard to get an HP printer working under MacOS.
Clearly you changed something and Software Updates sabotaged me here.
Please consider testing Internet Printing Protocol and LPD protocol under MacOS.

I collected some potential troubleshooting steps for Yosemite (10.10.x), but it may equally apply to your version of os.
Please refer to Possible solutions for Yosemite printing issues.

Because your printer has to be Airprint compatible and connected to WiFi. There are applications, such as Printopia, that will allow you to print through your computer.

  • I have an HP Laserjet 5m monochrome printer that I have used for years with our three Mac computers

    HP Laserjet 5m monochrome printer C3917A (1997)
    Operating system: OSX 10.7.4
    Error message: Printer busy
No known changes made to system or configuration
I have an HP Laserjet 5m monochrome printer that I have used for years with our three Mac computers (two on OS X Lion and one on  Leopard). I'm using ethernet to connect to a router and then my computer (although I have also tried to connect directly to no avail.) We went away for 2 weeks, returned and got “Printer busy” for all 3 computers. I reset the printer to factory settings. Same problem. By the way, the printer says READY. I then went to System prefs and clicked ‘–‘ in the Print & Scan section to remove the printer. When I tried to add back the printer, nothing shows up. I now remember that this may be because the means of communicating with the printer has now changed and that I had found the printer by somehow adding its address settings (or something). Can anyone help me to reconnect with the printer?

    Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
    Reset the printing system:
    - Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
    - Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
    - Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Dell only provide some rather old Windows drivers for this model, no Mac drivers at all.
Plug it in, you may get lucky but frankly I doubt it.

  • Cancel duplex printing on HP 6700 using Mac OSx Yosemite

I've been searching the HP Forum site for weeks for a solution to turning OFF the duplex printing on the HP 6700 printer.  The "tab" listed does NOT appear...so it's impossible to click on it.  There are NO options or two sided printing on the HP 6700 print screen.  None of the solutions here work...at least for us.  It appears lots of others are having this same problem with the HP 6700 printer...no way to turn off duplexing.  Does anyone have THE solution that works?  Again, using a Mac Pro with the OSX Yosemite.  (We couldn't get the duplex printing to stop with the last OS either.)  Help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
Follow the steps below to disable duplex printing:
Open the file used to print, click the File menu, select Print. The Print window appears.
NOTE: The Print window might be minimized. Click on Show Details to see all available settings.
Click the lowest selection box listed as the name of the program (e.g. TextEdit)
Will appear as Copies & Pages within Microsoft Office applications.
Select Layout from the drop-down menu.
Set the Two-Sided option as Off.
You may save the settings for future use by clicking Presets > Save Current Settings as Preset... Any used preset will remain default till another preset will be used.

  • My Macs cannot print two sides if using borther HL5370DW series

My Mac Desktop and Mac Laptop cannot print two sides of one paper when I use brother HL 5370DW.  It started from last week.  My PC cannot print two-sided paper by brother HL5370 DW, and my Mac can print two-sided paper if I use the HP printer on Mac.  I highly suspect the problem is from the updates of Mac.  Do you have the same or similar problem these days?
I have tried to re-install the brother printer driver, and it did not work.
    Thank you!

Have a read of this post. These Brother owners found the same issue after a recent driver update and managed to resolve the problem.

Can I use it somehow or should I ask for a different one that is compatible with my computer?
    No, that's not necessary.
You Mac most likely sat in inventory before it was sold so the latest drivers were not installed.
If you tried using the printer and couldn'tget it to work, go here >  http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html
If this is a USB connected printer, make sure it's connected to your Mac, then at that link click:  Detect Your Product

  • How to set up my MAC to print on XP wireless Router

Is there a site out here where I can get detailed instructions (in proper sequence) to get my wife's brand new laptop to print on shared network We have an XP laptop and desktop. Desktop is hooked up to a hp2175 printer. I had no problems using the wireless router to access the internet, but now I'm really at a lost of how to get the mac to print like my XP laptop.
Any help and detailed guidance is appreciated.

    1. Set it up with the iCloud options in System Preferences. I am not sure you will get a mac.com address unless you alrady have one, probably a .icloud.com
    2. I have used it for 6 years and I am happy with it.
    3. Don't know.

If you have Lion and wireless you can use Airdrop to copy files back and forth. (You don't need an internet connection, just two reasonably recent Lion machines with WiFi cards.)
Can I use AirDrop with my computer?

  • How to print uspto patent images using Safari and Quicktime

    3/18/06
Do you want to know how to print US patent images using Safari? Read on.
When you access the "images" link of a specific patent on the www.uspto.gov/ website using Safari, the page you are viewing is only one small upper left tile of a huge patent image that is not sized to the screen. You can scroll and try to read the page but it's almost impossible. Try to print it out and you only print what's on the screen. Bummer.
    The fix:
Place the cursor on the opened image (it may appear blank), hold down the CONTROL key on you keyboard and click on the image. Two instructions come up. Click on the "Save Image to the Desktop" instruction and a DImg.tiff file will be created on your desktop. Click on the .tiff file and it should open in the Preview program, then simply print out the image. Voila!!!!
Click the yellow arrow in the left margin to access page 2 of the patent and repeat the previous instructions to create another .tiff file on your destop. Do every page and you'll have the patent available to print out one page at a time.
You can then rename the files and create a folder for that specific patent so you can access it later without signing onto uspto site.
It's odd that the ever compatible Apple does not provide seamless compatibility to view and print patent images on the US Patent and Trademark Office's website. Where would they be without protecting their own intellectal property? Let's hope the next version of Quicktime includes the appropriate ITU T.6 or CCITT Group 4 (G4) compression language.
Even the "throw it out the Windows" operating system is up to speed on this issue for America's hard working inventors.
    Keep on inventing.

Can the mac air print to HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 plus Wireless e-all-in-one?

AirPrint is an iOS 5 protocol.  It is not used on the Mac or Lion.  What you *can* do is add the wireless printer to you network and print from the mac using that.

  • Printing to a Mac shared printer from windows 8

How can I print to a Mac shared printer (OS: 10.8.2) from my Windows 8 PC which is using the same Apple network?
    Matthias

I have tried using Bonjour on for Windows on Win8 however while it finds the printer and can add it no problem whenever a job is sent to the printer a blank page is printed. The Win8 machine can print to the printer fine if directly connected and the same driver is used when printing via Bonjour so one can only assume it's a "communications" issue between the Win8 machine and my Mac Pro which is sharing the printer.
