Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) Fans at Full Speed at Boot

I have a 2006 Mac Pro (Model Identifier MacPro1,1) and as soon as the power button is pressed, the fans will go to full speed.
Diagnostic LEDs are showing Trickle Power as good but every other LED does not light up. The main one that should be on should be the Power On, which should show green within 5 seconds of pressing the power button.
Any feedback on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

No video. But it isn't the video? and I don't know that you tested it. I do know the three cards I mentioned have been and are due for junk heap. Failing, not supported, underpowered, will go out.
I have seen bad RAM do all kinds of things.
But reading the forums, the number of issues with video cards is rather high.
Trouble shoot is educated guesses and hunches, especially when I don't know you did X and Y and confirmed it isn't your UPS or video card.
There is no hardware profile.
There is no mention of WHAT video card.
What was done.
Etc.
Give me a break. Those are not guesses. You are expecting mind reading.
I do take offense at the rudeness of your thanklessness of anyone offer of help, time and effort.
That helps others and narrows it down and rules out a few things.

Mac Pro will not boot, revs fans at full speed

Hi,
I had my Mac Pro (2006 3.0 quad core) asleep, it woke itself up and didn't display video, instead revved the fans at full speed and did nothing, so I shut it down using the power button. When I turned it on, it did/does the same thing, no chime, no video to the displays, and I cant boot in safe mode or any other way, it wont even eject the DVD drive if I hold the mouse down.
has anyone encountered this before?
Any ideas?

Give the SMC button a kick, hold it in for 5-10 seconds. Hard to see, but hidden by drive #4.
Or try zapping PRAM/NVRAM first and see if that helps.

Which graphics cards are Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) compatible?

I suspect my graphics card is bad (though I could be wrong). At boot I hear the Apple sound but get no visuals whatsoever. No grey or blue or any other kind of screen. I tried resetting PRAM, holding shift, holding option, nothing works. The computer is stuck at the phase where the graphics card fan is on overdrive and it does not ever stop spinning. The card is an ATI Radeon that came stock with the Mac.
I found this article which shows which cards are compatible.
MY QUESTION: Are these the ONLY graphics cards my Mac Pro will support? Or can I install any PCI-E graphics card?

SmcFanControl 2.2.2 and 12-core Mac Pro (picking the right fan to cool HDs)

quite recently I've moved from my previous Mac Pro 8-core (the earliest model) to the latest Mac Pro 12-core.
I've successfully used smcFanControl with my old Mac, and the fan names listed in the app's preferences were matching the fans listed by iStat and by smcFanControl in its dropdown menu. In the new Mac Pro there are more fans, not all of them match the names listed by iStat, and some names are "false friends". Please note though that all the fans listed by iStat show up also in the dropdown menu of smcFanControl
Here's the fans list in the preferences of smcFanControl, in this order:

Here's the fans list in the dropdown menu of smcFanControl and in iStat (I'm using the capitalization and order used by iStat, smcFanControl uses always all caps and names "Power Supply" as PS, plus adopting another ordering):

Now, the mapping looks also weird. Here's the mapping tested by increasing the speed of each fan I can control via preferences:
CPU_MEM == PCI
IO == Power Supply
EXHAUST == EXHAUST == INTAKE
PS == INTAKE
BOOSTA and BOOSTB run always at identical speed, and their speed is usually slightly less than 2X the speed of either Exhaust or Power Supply, whichever runs faster. Anyway they don't appear to be controllable via smcFanControl.
Interestingly, the mapping seems to be related to the order of the fans in the dropdown menu of smcFanPro. The first four fans listed there are:
PCI
PS
EXHAUST
INTAKE
My main problem currently is that I haven't yet found a way to keep the HDs at about 40°C or slightly less as I used to do with my old Mac Pro, unless I increase a lot the fans speed, which on the other hand brings down the CPU and RAM temperatures at quite ridiculous levels (basically only a few degrees more than ambient temperature, about 30° these days). What's worse, I haven't found exactly which fan affects more directly the HD temperatures. Increasing only the speed of a single fan never seemed to be enough, unlike with the old Mac Pro.
So, here are my questions to anyone using smcFanControl 2.2.2 on a Mac Pro 12-core:
1) Do you believe I should reinstall smcFanControl to get the correct list of fans? Or is this a known issue? (please note that I started using the new Mac by using Apple's migration utility, so also smcFanControl was "copied" from the old Mac like all other apps) If I have to reinstall smcFanControl,do you know if I should clean/delete specific directories or files to remove the old fans list?
2) Do you know which fan cools down most the HDs? I have four HDs so all bays are used. I've looked around quite a lot but I haven't found any diagram showing the fans position inside the Mac's case

Some drives now like WD Black 1TB+ do run normally at 40-41*C and that is in part because they are now engineering parts to be safe at those temps to reduce on cost of cooling and going green which can have a huge impact on data and server farms by just 5*C warmer.
My WD 10K VRs run COLD as can be and always have.
My advice is set the rpm for all fans @ one speed and then have 2 or 4 profiles: default, medium, high and extreme. Default is 499 for one and 599 for others. 900 rpm is just about when fans can be heard. 1200 rpm for more active cooling and 1800-2000 rpm for high.
The idea is in part to prevent it from getting warm first and then the system kick up the fans. Harder to get heat out of the case once it is there.
I think you are trying to "over-control" just a bit.
Prefe ences are in ~/Library/Preferences or just delete all the profiles. It probably has an uninstall.
I trust Temperature Monitor (freeware) or paid version (Hardware Monitor) a bit more than iStatPro.

You are very much over-due for some new larger more efficient drives.
the most common best approach goes something like this....
SSD 120GB for system
WD Black 1-2TB for data (and put all your data and media files, all your home account sub-folders)
Backup. I use WD Green but use what you want. I have a small boot volume, TimeMachine, and 3rd that is a clone image of the boot drive volume.
Very fond of WD 10K VelociRaptor drives. Not much louder now than the WD Black 2TB, $100-200 for 250GB to 1TB.
You can use any size SATA 3.5" drive, most now are 1TB and up to 4TB.
You should have always bought Amazon or Newegg or outside of Apple, Apple can often charge 3x what those places charge.
Probably want to add or replace FBDIMMs you have, these are excellent and price in the last year has fallen.

Your OEM 7300GT isn't helping now and with Lion or the X1900 dust magnet and out of date too. If you have a functional 8800GT still working you are lucky and no need.

After reading and resetting everything with Keyboard I still get blank white screen. The only way I can boot to Mavericks is unplug power cord, push and hold power button while plugging power cord in. Fans at full speed.

Use the uninstaller provided with the Sophos software. You can uninstall CUDA via the preference pane. Be sure you remove the com.nvidia.CUDA extension which is located in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. Not sure if Fan Control has an uninstaller so you will have to do it manually:
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:

Be sure to remove your two Login Items. Finally do this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

IMac fans running full speed constantly.

A few days ago my iMac's fans started running at full speed, which they very rarely do. Now every time I turn on my computer after about a minute the fans reach full speed, I'm only opening Google Chrome, Twitter, iTunes and Coversutra which has never caused the fans to run before.
I've downloaded a program to monitor temperatures of various parts of the iMac but nothing is getting hot enough to cause the fans to run at full speed.
I have reset the SMC and PRAM multiple times which hasn't fixed the issue. I've run the Apple Hardware Test on the original install disks which gave an issue number relating to the fact that the fans are running on full speed.. surprise surprise...
The computer isn't very old, was purchased almost to this date in 2009. It's an 8,1 iMac with a 20" screen. 4GB RAM and a 2.4Ghz processor.
Would be extremely appreciative if anyone has any idea how to fix this problem.

Get free iStat Pro. This code is obviously related to the HD, but I don't know if it necessarily means the HD is failing. It will show the fan rpms to see which fan is revving up. If it's only the HD fan that is climbing up, this may be related to the HD temperature sensor being faulty. Thing is, the sensor is probably integrated into the drive, so if it's only that that's failing, it will still involve replacing the drive.

Fans running full speed after hard drive replacement

I have a 24" aluminum iMac (iMac7,1) which had a hard drive failure. I replaced the hard drive myself and all went well. However, now my fans are running full speed. This appears to be because of a problem with detecting my temperature sensors now. During the install I only touched two temp. sensors, the hard drive sensor and the LCD sensor. I made special care to make sure I got the sensors back in place.
Using iStat Pro the only temp. sensors I have readings for are the Hard Drive and Power Supply. I am missing ambient, optical drive, CPU, and display. Out of those the only one out of the missing ones I touched are the display one. I have since gone back into the machine to ensure the LCD temp. sensor was fully connected and to ensure the HD one was connected (although that one is working).
What is really strange is the ambient sensor appears to be a diode on the main board so I really don't see a way I could have messed that one up. Also, I didn't touch the CPU sensor (didn't even see it), nor did I touch the optical sensor.
Anyway I have tried:
PRAM reset
SMC reset
went back into the box to make sure all temp sensors where in place.
I am out of troubleshooting ideas. Can anyone provide additional insight?

Besides for the fan noise the machine is running like a champ. The new hard drive seems to be fine, actually my machine boots up faster now than it ever did (faster drive I suppose). I ran disk utility and did a verify on the new disk and it didn't detect any problems.
The fans run at full speed immediately at power-on (maybe a one second pause). I first noticed it when I booted up from the startup disk to do a time machine restore. So yes, it occurs when booting from a system disk.
I have been unable to run Apple Hardware Test, I saw this step in some google searching and Apple docs but I don't seem to have AHT on any disk. I have tried putting the Snow Leopard disk in and holding "d" at boot time to no affect. I did some further reading and found that AHT may only be included on disks that come with the machine. I am going to try to dig up my Tiger disks and see if I can get AHT to run from there (10.4 was the factory installed OS when I bought my iMac).
I am also considering trying to re-install SMC firmware (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2368). Even though it will be the same version at least I know the SMC reset has taken place.
Since the fans run full speed right at start up that suggests to me that it is a physical hardware problem (i.e. something wrong with the sensors) or a firmware issue. I am leaning toward firmware.

IMac G5 (no iSight) fans running full speed always

Hi,
The processor usage is relatively low (like 10%) but the fans are full speed at all times from the second the power comes on. I imagine there isa problem with the mother board? I've tried resetting all the SMC stuff, no effect.
Any ideas?
Is this something Apple Stores will charge to fix?

It could be either faulty, leaking caps, or a failing power supply unit. Yes, Apple will charge since you are long out of warranty. You can open the machine and check the caps yourself, they look like little soda cans, and their tops should be perfectly flat and there should be no exudate.

If you are careful you can put at least two on one drive, having Recovery from Lion and Mountain Lion on their own drives though.
CCC can clone Lion Recovery - great for moving or backup.

Spinning beach ball of death after crash with fans running full speed

I recently put my machine to sleep - came in the next morning to find it running all fans at full speed and frozen. Did a hard reset (power button in for 5 seconds waited 15 secs and then power on. It rebooted after a long re-boot period. Since then it has slowed down. Many apps take an age to open. Many freeze and there is the infamous SBoD. I have rebuilt permissions, installed 10.5.8 combo, done a permission repair from a separate firewire disk, run onyx - which at time never ends and has to be aborted. Activity monitor shows no exceptional activity when the SBoD is running. I had significant issues until last December when i did a clean rebuild and installation of leopard and put all essential software in from clean install disks - all in all had a pristine machine which was working perfectly until the week before last when the full fan and freeze crash occurred. I notice that it speeded up after the 10.5.8 combo install and permission rebuild from external disk but gradually slows down and gets increasingly unstable requiring forced reboots more and more often. I have no hacks or other background processes other than Virus Barrier 6 which ran perfectly before the crash.

As expected after running well at about 11:40 Mail slowed down and the SBoD started.
