Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) Upgrade from Dual-Core to Quad (or more)

Sorry if posted before, was unable to find anything. Is it possible to upgrade a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) Upgrade from Dual-Core to Quad-Core (or more)? If it is, would you mind providing a bit of info on what I would need to do this.
Many thanks.

  • Upgrading From Dual Core to Quad Core on an MSI 7246 Power Up Edition

    Good day folks.
I'm upgrading a dual core Pentium Extreme Edition 955 (3.46 GHz) to a quad core Intel QX6800 Extreme Edition (2.93 GHz) which my MSI-7246 Power Up Edition is supposed to support.
I'm running Windows XP with all the latest patches installed.
Are there any special procedures I need to follow to accomplish this without a hitch? I.E., I certainly do no want to have to reinstall the OS.
I've read a couple of posts which talk about deleting the processor entries which are now correctly listed in Device Manager.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I forgot to add, clear CMOS wouldn't hurt before you start it up after the CPU change.
OK. Will do. Sounds like good advice.
    Appreciate the tip.
EDIT: As a follow-up the upgrade went smoothly except for loading the drivers for the 2nd, 3rd & 4th cores. It took me a couple of hours but I finally discovered a work around. Basically, I had to try and manually pick a driver. With Windows XP the list presented under Intel did not contain the one I wanted. However, by picking another one and then bailing at the confirmation window it would somehow put the right one in for a given core.
    Go figure ....

  • What is a recommended internal hard drive for a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006)?

What is a recommended internal hard drive for a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) model? I would like to
add more hard drive space by utilizing the three available slots. However, from my understanding,
Apple does not produce hard drives for my older computer so I'll need to turn to a third party.

You are very much over-due for some new larger more efficient drives.
the most common best approach goes something like this....
    SSD 120GB for system
WD Black 1-2TB for data (and  put all your data and media files, all your home account sub-folders)
Backup. I use WD Green but use what you want. I have a small boot volume, TimeMachine, and 3rd that is a clone image of the boot drive volume.
Very fond of WD 10K VelociRaptor drives. Not much louder now than the WD Black 2TB, $100-200 for 250GB to 1TB.
You can use any size SATA 3.5" drive, most now are 1TB and up to 4TB.
You should have always bought Amazon or Newegg or outside of Apple, Apple can often charge 3x what those places charge.
Probably want to add or replace FBDIMMs you have, these are excellent and price in the last year has fallen.
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $29
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
    WD Black 1TB $93
    http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Caviar-Internal-Desktop/dp/B0036Q7MV0/
    WD Green 3TB $149 - backup
    http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Caviar-Green-Desktop/dp/B004RORMF6/
    WD VR 10K 250GB $103 200MB/sec boot drive :
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007V5A1BK/
Those last and last and make a nice boot drive.
    SSD: Samsung 840 128GB

Over-due to upgrade and replace the graphic card most likely it sounds like also:

Your OEM 7300GT isn't helping now and with Lion or the X1900 dust magnet and out of date too. If you have a functional 8800GT still working you are lucky and no need.

  • I have a dual core mac pro tower , can  I upgrade to lion from snow leopard?

I have a dual core mac pro tower , can  I upgrade to lion from snow leopard?

The 2006 and 2007 Mac Pros can be upgraded as far as Lion. Mountain Lion can be installed on Mac Pros from 2008 onward. See below:
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

You can write to Apple with the serial number and they can tell you exactly when your MacPro (as opposed to Mac Book Pro) was manufactured.
And in the Apple menu > about this Mac >  more info > there should be sufficient detail to narrow it down.
EDIT.  These are the specs for the      April 2007 version.

  • Why does my Mac Pro try to start up from a blank drive?

I fitted a 2nd drive to my 2006 Mac Pro in anticipation of dual booting Windows (not done yet). The dive is FAT formatted but is empty. Why does the Mac Pro try to boot up from that drive every time I start it up, despite having set the startup disc as OS X in the System Prefs?! Getting sick of seeing the flashing folder with the question mark evry time I start it up.

I might be inclined to think the problem is really on your startup drive. You might try reinstalling Snow Leopard.
    Also, try:
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • I have a pre-2008 Mac PRO how do I upgrade to Mountain Lion?

I have a pre-2008 Mac PRO how do I upgrade to Mountain Lion? On the Apple's site on upgrading (http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/), I see that "Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)" is required for the upgrade. What's up with that?
Will upgrading of the GPU do the trick?
I'm curretly on Snow Leopard, will I be limited to Lion?

I bought a new Mac Pro and migrated my FCP from my old one. But the new old won't accept my product serial number. Help!

Was the FCS on your old machine an upgrade? You will need to enter your original, full version serial first, and then you will be prompted for the upgrade serial number.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac pro cannot boot after upgrade to 10.8.3

My Mac Pro cannot boot after upgrade to 10.8.3. Anything firmware I can reset or how should I do.
I am using a early 2008 Mac Pro

Can you boot into safe mode? http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
If not, how about Recovery? http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718
If you can, run Disk Utlity and repair the disk. You can try rebooting normally, but I would just reinstall after quitting Disk Utility.

  • Newest 8-core Mac Pro won't always wake from sleep.

Recently I have been experiencing my Mac Pro not always waking up from sleep. It is a 2.4 Ghz 8-Core running Snow Leopard. I am using a USB keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse. I am noticing that it is becoming more frequent and it's starting to worry me with how expensive this computer is.  If I had to guess, I would guess that it happens more often after long sleep durations. The only way to get it to turn on is by holding down the power to turn it off and then doing a reset. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Can this be done? Airport extreme connected wireless in extend mode to connect a wireless Mac Pro with an ethernet cable from the extended airport extreme..

Can this be done? Airport extreme connected wireless in extend mode to connect a wireless Mac Pro with an ethernet cable from the extended airport extreme.

This will work.....IF....you also have an Apple AirPort router configured to provide your wireless network.
In other words, you need to have two Apple AirPort routers to extend a wireless network.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "extend" the wireless of the "main" AirPort, it will provide more wireless coverage and the Ethernet ports are enabled, so you could connect your Mac Pro to any of the Ethernet ports and use that as a network and Internet connection.

Installing CleanMyMac was just about the worst thing you could do. Get rid of it: Re: cleanmymac2

Yeah it is soldered. So no upgrade possible. Found here: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/macbook-pro-retina-display-faq /macbook-pro-retina-display-processor-ram-expansion-slots.html
