Mac pro 1.1 CPU

Hi,
I am wanting to upgrade my mac pro 1.1 (2007) to a 8 core machine using 2 intel xeon x5355 at 2.66ghz. Having read numerous links and articles for this i know how to perform the upgrade but am getting confused about upgrading the firmware, so my questions are:
1) Do i HAVE TO upgrade the firmware or not, YES or NO, is it essential or will the machine work without the firmware upgrade, what benefits does the firmware give???
2) Is there a specific type of x5355 to get, e.g. SLAEG, SLY9M etc...
3) Upgrading the CPU will not affect the booting of windows will it? It shouldnt but am just checking.
Thanks, simple answers would be appreciated as i have heard that the firmware is needed and then again it isnt... so could someone please clear up my questions.
Thanks in advance

    Hi.
I own an early mac pro 1,1. It has a dual core 2.4ghz or something there abouts. Id like to upgrade the cpu to a quad core or better. Ideally 2 chips. (8 core +) What intel processors will work well in this model mac pro? Can someone please give me a list of upgrade options? also does apple sell them? if not what would be the best sites to research and buy from? Im in australia.

If money is no object, OWC will swap 2010 or 2012 Processor shelves for whatever you want as long as you have a working Mac Pro 5,1 shelf to swap and a ton of money.

The basic charge is US$949 starting from the 2.8 Quad.
    • to move up to the 3.33 hex add US$550 to the base price for a total of about US$1500.

  • Mac Pro 2006 upgrading CPU

I have a 2006 Mac Pro Intel with 2 2.66 dual cores and would like to upgrade them to 2 2.66 quad cores. I can't afford a faster unit. I use FCP 6 and it takes me forever to render video but at least these will help me speed it up a little.
I emailed xlr8yourmac.com about this 2 weeks ago seeking help but got no response. I found no posts there or here in apple discussions to help with the questions I've listed below.
Ebay has some used ones but I don't know what units to buy. I went to Intel and they list different "Categories" of (discontinued) Xeon X5355's like "FC-LGA6", "PASSIVE FC-LGA6" and "FC-LGA6 TRAY". Inside each "Category" there are 2 different "Socket" types: "PLGA771" and "LGA771". Then there are *"Spec Codes"*: "SLAEG", "SLAC4" and "SL9YM". I have no idea which would be appropriate if ANY of them are.
I am NOT a techie...I do video & audio and send the computer out for repairs. The computer's way out of warranty but I've chek'd with 2 local apple authorized serv. centers and they said it may cost over $1600 to purchase and install the processors. I know this computer is old and slow but hopefully I can get another year or so out of it. I cannot afford to buy a new unit. That's not affordable right now so please don't suggest that.
    Can anyone PLEASE help me?
Thanks so much for reading this.

These sorts of upgrades are not for hobbyists, especially if this is your Work computer. If you are not a technician, you are risking turning your computer into a non-functioning pile of junk. Sell the current one and buy a faster one, possibly a used one. Or look at the Apple refurbished here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/mac_pro?mco=MTkyMTQ5MzA
Many Macs doing these jobs are NOT compute-bound. Look at Activity Monitor and be certain your CPU is really maxed out. Often it will not be because the real problems are elsewhere. If you want to make it go faster, there are several things you can do:
    1) make sure you have enough real RAM memory. On the Activity monitor memory screen, you should be seeing Zero pageouts, and there should still be some green in the pie chart.
    2) Consider having a "System" drive, with Mac OS X, Applications, and paging only, no user files, no scratch files. This will reduce overall competition for the System Drive and make your Mac more responsive. If this is a really fast drive like a small 10,000 RPM velociraptor or Solid State Drive, that will be even better.
    3) make sure you are editing from one drive, to a different drive.

I am not sure what you are saying with posting the screen shots.
I will say that I just upgraded my 1,1 with three items that do make a difference.
And I am on the dual dual-core 2.0GHz model.
    4GB was just getting along.
The 7300GT seemed ready to give up its ghost and not well suited to Lion.
The biggest change was swapping out a 2010 era SATA2 SSD for a new Samsung 840 $100, still on the SATA2 bus.

  • Mac Pro 2.0 outperforming Mac Pro 2.66, WHY?

Ok Guys, I am stumped here and hopefully someone can shed some light.
    I have 2 Mac Pros: System 1 - 2 x 2.66 with 9GB of memory and System 2 - a recently acquired 2 x 2.0 with 5 GB of memory.
System 1 has banks filled as follows:
    Riser A
    Bank 1: 2gb
    Bank 2: 2Gb
    Bank 3: 512
    Bank 4: 512
    Riser B
    Bank 1: 2gb
    Bank 2: 2Gb
    Bank 3: empty
    Bank 4: empty
In System 2, I installed snow leopard after reformatting a 500 GB WD (7200rpm)caviar drive w/16 MB cache. There is also a 2nd WD drive (1 TB, 7200 Rpm)
Having plans to upgrade the 2.O Mac pro, I decided to compare it against my "faster" Mac pro 2.66. I took a video file that is 1hr 23 mins. It took 56 mins to render in IDVD coming from ImovieHD. Knowing that the 2.66 is significantly faster than the 2.0, I was thinking it would take maybe 44 mins to complete on the Mac Pro 2.66... to my surprise it took 1 hr 49 mins.
Thinking that the benefits were due to snow leopard. I backed up the system, reformatted the drive and installed Snow leopard and all my apps on the Mac Pro 2.66. I did the same test, the performance was even worst - it took 2 hrs 3 mins. After dropping the F-bomb a couple times I started looking at other things.
The Mac Pro 2.6 has 2 x 1 TB 7200 drives the OS drive has a 32 GB cache the other drive a 16 Mb cache.
The memory in the 2.0 is configured as follows:
    Riser A
    Bank 1: 1gb
    Bank 2: 1Gb
    Bank 3: 512
    Bank 4: 512
    Riser B
    Bank 1: 512
    Bank 2: 512
    Bank 3: 512
    Bank 4: 512
The video files on both systems are located on the non-OS file but I create the disk image from IDVD to the desktop on the OS Volume. The workflow is identical on both systems.
Both video cards are the stock Nvidia 7300. All drives are 7200 rpm. Why is my Mac Pro 2.0 outperforming the MacPro 2.66 with almost twice as much memory? I even filled the two empty slots on the MAC pro 2.66 thinking that is why it was taking a hit, it did not help.
    Any good suggestions welcome.

    Some tidbits:
RAM should be in quad and paired across Risers.
4 x 2GB (or 4 x 4GB) is your best as far as memory bandwidth
6 DIMMs is not ideal (8 DIMMs properly paired is okay but higher latencies)
Higher density RAM also shows improvements.
HARD DRIVES are an easy investment and can be used in whatever system you need now or later.
7.2k drives are fine, yours are on the old side.
    Especially that 500GB model.
SATA III, latest models, show 20% improvement, 64MB cache
    4 WD Caviar Black 640GB @ $70 eachm or 1TB to 2TB ($85-170)
boot from one, and stripe the other two or three.
You probably aren't ready to throw SSDs in, nor do you want $200-275 for 10K WD VelociRaptors (300-600GB) which are fast and make nice drives for system, scratch, and of course in arrays.

Time to replace those 7300s, if they aren't ready to bulge and blow a capacitor already. Shame that there really are few choices, 5770 or... 5770.
OS drive should be lean, fast, and just OS and apps
    data or media drive
    editing drives
higher capacity drives w/ 64MB cache are a plus, just being 3rd generation of Caviar Black line improvements rather than 4 yr old 500GB 16MB cache model
+Tried to break-down and decipher your setup and results for my own use:+
    System 2
    Installed snow leopard
500 GB WD (7200rpm)caviar drive w/16 MB cache.
    2nd WD drive (1 TB, 7200 Rpm)
Mac pro 2.O against my "faster" Mac pro 2.66.
video file is 1hr 23 mins. It took 56 mins to render in iDVD coming from ImovieHD.

I work with a 2006 2.0 and a 2009 4-core 2.66GHz and the difference between the two is noticeable enough to consider upgrading my 1,1 to 5355s, 4 x 2GB (or more), and 5770, JUST so it can 'compete' on equal footing with $2k Mac Pro Special:

  • Upgrading Early 2009 Mac Pro to Yosemite

I need an upgrading for dummies tutorial   I want to upgrade some applications that I use and can not do that with Mountain Lion which is currently on my Early 2009 Mac Pro. (Processor 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - Memory 12 GB - Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB - OSX 10.8.5). My monitor is a NEC MultiSync P221W and I use Spectraview II to calibrate. I also have an older Dell monitor attached that I only use for palettes, etc.
I have discovered I can not upgrade to Mavericks and will need to go to Yosemite. I am nervous about the process and undecided what is the best way to tackle this. I assume I will first need to do a full backup and do have a bootable drive that I can use. Can I then just install Yosemite or is it best to do a clean install? I have heard so many negative things about installing Yosemite that I am really uncertain of the best way to tackle this. I am particularly concerned about the reports of system slow down.I have an even older MacBook Pro that is also running Mountain Lion but I have no plans to attempt an upgrade on it. It has had problems since it was fairly new and right now I use an external keyboard and a mouse because using the track pad or keyboard on the laptop cause it to lock up. (Long story and multiple rebuilds during and after Apple Care). So at this point the only machine I am concerned about is the desktop. I use it mainly for Photoshop and Lightroom and Quicken. If someone can give me some advice I would be most appreciative. I am an older gal with casual computer knowledge, living out in the sticks and really have no one available for help. Thanks in advance

Depending on how hard you push your system, size of files you work with.
You may want to look into 5,1 firmware; a W3690 or X5690 3.4GHz 6-core even to help more.

  • Advice Mac Pro 5,1

    Hello...
Please get me a every advice..
For you, I did well to buy MacPro 12-core (2x2,66 GHZ 6-core) 2010 and 16GB of memory ram?
It is very speed and powerfull of all computer of the world?
I have buy other two slot of memory ram 2x4GB in total arrived 24GB of memory ram from OWC..
THe question is, it is normal that to start-up and shut-up sometimes close/start speed and close/start a lot of seconds?
Because, I made a comparison a iMac with 8GB and MacPro with 16GB they are same to thing shut/start-up, only all programms it is very speed from open/close and work..
Ultimate question, I have tried remove a slot of 4GB and use 12GB it is a bit faster than 16GB why? Or maybe I'm wrong?
    What do you thing?

  • Mac Pro technical specifications optimized for Photoshop and Premier Pro, yet affordable

I will replace my old desktop Mac Pro with a new one.  I am looking for advice for the appropriate configuration choices for the new Mac Pro for use with the most current versions of Photoshop and Premier Pro.  This has to be balanced with a budget between $4000 to $6500.  I will use multiple hard drive storage for my files, but I am not asking for any advice for this,  My Photoshop use is for photo editing, with multiple images of at least 25MB files for panoramas and high dynamic range, and composites (have used Photoshop for 10 years).  I have not begun to use Premier Pro for video editing, but will primarily use it over the next 18 months to edit family home movies.
The primary technical questions are which GPU D300 or D500,  CPU speed and number of cores 4 or 6 or 8, and memory DDR3 ECC 12GB or 16GB or 32 GB or 64GB.
I have read various Internet articles and reviews of the Mac Pro, but find that I am unable to come up with a final choice.  One article stated that Adobe has designed its software to effectively use the new Mac Pro GPUs and CPU cores.
    Thank you,
    MIKE

I would suggest atleast 16GB of ram with 32GB really what you want because of the dual GPU''s. If you don't have enough ram to feed both video cards then both those cards will have limited performance. The D300 cards are really a waste. I wouldn't bother with anything less than the D500 cards especially if you plan to use Premiere. AMD cards already have half the performance that Nvidia cards do with Adobe GPU acceleration in Premiere. I wouldn't make it worse with the D300 cards. I would also suggest the 6 core CPU over the 4 Core. Otherwise just get the new Imac instead of you want a Mac.

  • Will late 2013 Mac Pro boot from MacBook Pro (8,1)?

I have a MacBook Pro which (until the delivery of my new 16 gb RAM Mac Pro) has been my main machine. When it comes I'd like to put my MBkP into Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode and use my Mac Pro as the CPU (et al) for my work. (In this way I'll have the portability of my MBkP when needed and the speed of the Mac Pro when in the office without having to change / keep track of files, etc.) I have an Dell monitor which I'll connect to via Thunderbolt to DVI as I do now from the MBkP. My MBkP has all the latest updates (eg: Sys 10.9.1 and all other updates).
My question: will this work? Or does the Mac Pro have some minimum system / hardware requirements which won't allow't to boot from the MBkP?

Think that is odd, until there is a new unified OS build for everyone, with new hardware like these there will be new builds every couple of weeks usually. 10.9.0 was long before they were ready for more than testing.
The Mac Pro 2010 went through that, even the 1,1 2006 had about three different builds before a new update for OS X existed.
OEM builds really are just that and not suitable the way retail is. I don't know how they manage pushing updates out now that it is through the App Store other than those are suitable for multiple Macs. ie, IF I have a new nMP sitting here and I 'goof' and need to reinstall the OS and I was negligant in making a backup with  T.M. or a clone, and I have to do a net-install (no Mac Pro up till now had the feature) what build gets pushed to download for me? I would hope of course it is the build I had or later but until 9.2 is out...
Which is long winded way of saying, before you make changes, before you do like someone else did couple days ago and migrate from an older MacBook Pro - and carried over out of date and  incompatible versions, and even drivers no one wants to see - make sure you have a double backup safety net.

  • GarageBand performance on Mac Pro

Yesterday when I was composing a beautiful song I had a couple of instruments playing at the same time. At the bottom of the screen I see the notes of the score I´m composing as they are played. While this is nevertheless surprising, I am actually curious about how this would look on a Mac Pro.
As soon as the song audio produces just a little bit of work for the CPU, the screen refresh goes down from perfect timing to one second chokes on my machine as the same time as CPU load goes beyond 110 %. Activity monitor show there are about 20 threads in GarageBand. The sound is perfect. What happens if, say one buys a 2x2.0 GHz Mac Pro(4 cores totally)? The actual CPU frequency will be lower, but would the display respond better? That is: Is GarageBand a program that handles multiple threads well or does one have to buy a Mac Pro with higher CPU frequency?
(I´m using a 30" Apple Cinema HD Display)

What does this sentence mean? Please simplify!
I'm positive he worded that incorrectly. "What he meant to say is "Can you imagine a Mac Pro that couldn't handle it without breaking a sweat?" Basically a Mac Pro is designed to go the distance with applicaitons like this, given you've configured the machines with enough memory and storage resources.

  • Firmware Mac Pro 1.1

    Hi, quick question:
Want to install 2 xeon x5355 2.66 ghz quad cores in my Mac Pro 1.1 2007 and remove the 2x dual core 2.66ghz. I know how to install them, but do I need to upgrade the firmware or not to 2.1??? Will it make a difference??? I've heard it doesn't matter at all and sometimes you need it???
Please help! Do I need or not???  really confused!!

the answer is hidden in a thread on macrumors and is 'optional' though it use to be mandatory and depends in part of the exact intel part number you buy. It is also done to improve stability. There is the issue of better firmware for fan control.
And then after cpu upgrade you may need another step to get system profile to recognize your system,.
    I would.
But you seemed to want to skip the reading, and yes I get headache and have to re-read and the threads and other forums too can seem like they buried the nuts bolts and you want a silver platter?
the two part youtube set is excellent.

What socket type does the 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 use I have a 8-core Mac Pro and I am wanting to upgrade my processors to a 12-core but I am having trouble finding out if it uses the LGA 1150 or the LGA 2011 and I am also having trouble deciding if I should go with an Ivy Bridge, an Ivy Bridge-EP or a Sandy Bridge. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mac Pro 2.66 (2006) CPU Temps

It's been a while since I took a look at the my temps and what not using Hardware Monitor but the other day I reached behind my Mac Pro... it seemed to me that it was awfully warm... so it peeked my curiosity...
Today I checked and my CPU temps are all around 135F... as I said, it's been a while since I looked but I seem to remember them being sub-100F at idle...
    Am I not remembering correctly?
    Thoughts?
    Thanks!

See if installing SmcFanControl 2.2+ to create profiles and change default fan speed works, changes the fans.
Rather than wait for the system to heat up, switch to a higher rpm profile for that purpose, say 900-1000 rpm is still just barely audible but moves much more air and cooling. 1200-1500 for high.
Once the fans kick in, or cpus are under a work load, it can end up being cooler than it was.
The new 2009s with HT can be forced to use more power, create more heat. For 2006, the big issue is/was the ATI X1900 and clogging with dust and overheating, which needs to be pulled and cleaned every 3 months.
