Mac pro 10.4.11 to 10.5 hesitation freeze problems

Mac pro 2,1 5GB RAM one 500G HD. It's been having all kinds of glitches so finally attempted erase install of the two original mac pro discs. HD seemed bad after all kinds of trouble sometimes after successfully installing the 10.4 os x. it would freeze then not restart, making a patterned click click whurr sound apparently in the HD. Multiple hour and days wasted. Finally bought new 500GB HD. Two disc install went fine. multiple software updates later seemed to be working fine (but didn't try to do much due to time constraints) But couldn't access my Time Machine backups (my whole music collection and all my photos) or navigate my kids' favorite web sites very well so got the 10.5 OS X install dvd from my ex wife and did an upgrade install. Now all **** has broken out, mouse cursor freezes then go then freezes again repeatedly. This causes you to realize that actually everything is doing the freezing. Tried the many software updates, it would freeze go freeze go the whole time but seem to do them but afterward still the same. Restarts are very slow and start grey then apple then waiting wheel then blue forever blue then finally start and freeze go freeze go. Unusable. once wouldn't start from 10.5 os x dvd   Should I start all over skipping certain 10.4 updates (if I can even get 10.4 running again)?

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Forced power downs can mess up the HD.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc...

  • Mac Pro (Late 2013), Photoshop CC stamp tools and Yosemite Problems

Lately when I'm using the the stamp tool in Photoshop CC after a few clicks I hear a short "click click" out of the Mac Pro Late 2013 when then goes on to freeze
my keyboard and basically makes it useless. I then have to save the photo by clicking in the menu bar, restart the computer which clears the problem. I'm using a Wacom Intuos Pro and thought it could the problem but I tried it also with a normal usb mouth clicking on an image and get the same results. What is this "click click" noise because as soon as I hear that I know that the Mac Pro is going to freeze.........anyone else having any Photoshop problems?

I've not tried exporting with Premiere but with After Effects on my identical Mac Pro also using istat menus, I rarely if ever see the 2nd GPU spin up. I'm exporting right now for example and:
makes me wonder if this is infact an issue with Istat menus or if the 2nd gpu really isnt being utilized.

  • Mac Pro 6 core, D500, 256ssd 64gb loss of memory problems

I Can simply have the computer running with no Apps other than Finder & Adobe CC cloud and it burns up all RAM within an hour.
    Help?

By far the things that cause the most issues are "just one little thing" that Users have added. These tend to cause trouble because they are badly-crafted or because they do things in violation of Developer Guidelines.
Lots of seemingly innocent little things that users have added have been seen to cause serious problems in high-end Mac Pros. If you want trouble-free, remove all the non-Apple add-ons and just run straight, unmodified Mac OS X and Major Applications, no add-ons. Readers here could easily produce a list of more than 50 add-ons that have been seen in postings here to cause trouble.  When in doubt, throw it out.
The anti-malware features built into Mac OS X work better that any so-called "anti-Virus". Most of these commercial packages are simply worthless, but some also ruin performance, ruin memory utilization, or cause kernel panics without adding any additional value.
Hardware problems do not cause memory leaks.
The Mac Pro has Error Correcting Code memory, and its memory problems do not fester undetected. But you do need to check that all the memory you installed is still listed as present, because ANY problems detected at Startup can cause failing modules to be marked "absent".

Would you care to tell us which version of Mac Pro, and which version of OS X, you are running?  (It's not always safe to assume that a User is running Lion just because he posted in the Lion Forum.)

  • Mac Pro kernel panic, RAM does not seem to be problem

My Mac Pro (late 2006) now has kernel panics at startup. Problem first happened while computer was in sleep mode, a second kernel panic happened about 10-15 minutes after reboot the first time. Now it happens at startup every time. Zapped PRAM multiple times to no effect. Tested original 10.4 install disk, as well as 10.5 and 10.6 upgrade disks with all external connections removed and from a cold boot. The 10.4 disk causes the kernel panic every time. The 10.5 and 10.6 disks do too, if the C or D key is depressed. The upgrade disks will hang in a gray screen (10.6) or pale blue screen (10.5) with no keys depressed--computer keeps running but fails to boot. Also tested the RAM (4 X 512 MB) in different combinations of one pair in the top riser board (and switched risers, and removed lower board completely). All resulted in kernel panics. Next option?

To anyone finding this thread in the future looking for help on a similar problem, the CNet forums Mac section gave me the correct advise: replace the video card. The stock GeForce 7300 was causing the kernel panics. I replaced it with a Radeon HD 3870, from eBay, and everything went back to normal operation. (I did also have to upgrade my OS for the new card to work properly.)

  • Mac Pro (early 2008) still experiencing frequent Kernel Panic freezing ... ugh

My early 2008 Mac Pro (2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 24 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM) is still experiencing frequent Kernel Panic freezing.
Some days I can go the whole day without one, other days I will experience many, some while using the computer, some after waking it up, some after restarting from one.... its a mess.
I thought it might be RAM related. So I ran different tests on all the chips, found nothing, no errors reported after overnight looping tests. I added more RAM (I ordered 4 2Gb chips so I'd have a total of 16Gb, they sent me 4Gb cards, so now I have 24Gb. I have heard its best to have all cards of the same size, so I ran it with just the new 4Gb cards giving it 16Gb, it still crashed.) I tested the new ram alone, in 2 card groups, in different configurations on the RAM boards, nada.
Maybe it's the graphics card? But I get no weird graphics artifacts (which I did used to experience with my old iMac before it died).
The fans seem to run normally, not too fast or too loud. Sometimes after repeated crashes I'll open up the computer and blow it out with compressed air. That does seem to help, but not always. It's not real dusty, though there is a fine layer of dust that seems to be stuck/ coat the boards.
In Activity Monitor, the kernel_task hovers at about 1.22 Gb of RAM.
I can not iron down what the problem stems from. Nothing seems to alleviate the crashing, which has become more and more frequent it seems...
Anyone have any suggestions? I have tried using Hardware Test using the original OS disks. I have tried Memtest in Terminal. All to no avail. Nothing turned up any errors. I am not sure what to do next besides call for an Exorcism.
    Please help!

They keep happening. In the time it took to select the latest one, copy and paste it here, and then write this, a dozen more were logged... Is that normal??

  • Mac Pro will not start up. Firmware or graphics problem?

A really weird thing happened to my MacPro 1,1. It has been working fine for the last 5 years until today when I was running Parallels and suddenly the screen got those thin, horizontal, wavy, purple lines all over the place and cursor turned into a beachball. I tried to Force Quit Parallels but it didn't work. I had to hold power button to force the computer to shut down.
I am running 10.6.8 and just yesterday I installed some updates but these were minor: Safari, iTunes, Java. The computer worked fine after those have been installed.
Now the scary thing - the computer does not start up properly. When I press the power button I hear the chime but then I see the grey Apple logo with those purple, wavy lines in it. The computer seems to find the system on the hard drive but when it gets to the login screen it doesn't display the login window or the background properly. Instead I get just a plain grey color with a cursor (arrow) that moments later turns into a beachball.
I unplugged everything to bare minimum and tried to start it up from Snow Leopard CD. It finds the CD but the same thing happens - I don't see the CD installation menu, just a blank grey screen.
This makes me think: either the graphics card died (GeForce 7300GT) or it is some OpenFirmware problem.
I removed the card from its slot, blew off some dust and reset it. No change. I tried resetting SMC as well (Even though the instructions are a bit weird: unplug power, wait, plug it back in, wait, press power). I do have non-Apple RAM installed (6GB total) but it doesn't seem to be RAM issue - all status LEDs on both riser cards just blink red briefly during power up.
Should I plan a trip to the Genius Bar or do I own now a very expensive paperweight?
Any ideas? I would greatly appreciate your help.

I found your thread very helpful.  I have a 2009 mac pro 3,1 that seems to be doing similar things.  It was working fine then occasionally the screen would flicker and then freeze the system.  had to power off to get out of it.  Now it won't boot.  I get purple and white vertical lines and the apple with the pinwheel.  the pinwheel stops after a while and thats it.  i tried booting from the cd and get to the harware test but the screen is split left and right.  really unreadable.  i suspect the graphics card (geforce ) so i tried booting without the card installed. i believe it still did not complete the boot.  my question is should i be able to boot without a graphics card installed?  any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

  • Mac Pro Nvidia 8800GT and snow leopard 10.6.4  problems

I have a Mac pro 1.1 with a Nvidia 8800GT and I have having a lot of problems since update to snow leopard latest release. My computer start to show lines and giggle with lines static and then freeze, it make so bad that you can't do anything even restart the computer does not solve the problem. I have reset the pram and all possible solution available. Maybe the video card is going to die soon?

My MacPro 3.1 with Nvidia 8800 Gt is also not HP.
Initially I was getting some video glitches just after start up but then the machine would settle down and run for the session.
about a week ago the situation got increasingly worse so that from last Sat morning its will not even boot up 4 times out of 5 tries.
Gets to the apple symbol then freezes
I've tried booting from the snow leopard install disc but even then its freezes and I see many video artifacts.
I've ordered a ATi Radeon 4870 to replace the graphics card as I thought that might be the issue. The 8800 GT was full of fluff I feared it had cooked itself this summer.
But now I'm concerned from reading several forum topics that a recent OSX update has effectively killed machines with the 8800 Gt card.
I can't really operate fully without my macpro as that where most of the software is held. CS5 master suite etc
My business partner did say just get another machine but i'm not happy to go down that route just yet. Yes of course a 12 core is tempting but at ££££.££ cost.
lucky I have my Macbook pro to use otehrwise i'd be

  • Mac PRO Desktop blank DVD will not eject keeps freezing. "LION"

Hi, my Mac pro will not eject the blank disc i inserted into the drive, I am running lion and it keeps trying to read the disc and makes everything freeze.
you cannot reset or shut down the machine properly unless you hold down the power button.
is their a Physical emergancy eject on the mac pro desktop or a way to get the diwc out?
Yes I have tried ejecting uning terminal and disk utility will not open becouse of the DVD drive.

You have added too much junk:
    com.senstic.driver.PocketAudioDevice          1.1
    com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver          1.0.0
    com.digidesign.iokit.DigiIO          7.4.1d0
    com.digidesign.iokit.DigiDal          7.4.1d0
    com.avid.driver.Avid_SCSI          1.2.0
    com.SiliconImage.driver.Si3132          1.2.5
If you want Apple to address your problems, the first requirement is to reproduce the problem with no third-party kernel extensions present.
Most users find that when the eliminate the third-party kernel extensions, they eliminate the kernel panics.
The black screens could also be caused by your graphics card beginning to go.

  • Mac Pro 2006 boots into OS fine but graphics freezes on grey apple logo

When I boot my Mac Pro it boots into Mac OS X fine. I can access it remotely and all seems fine however the monitor only displays the grey apple with the whit background. I know the graphics card isnt over heating because I have removed any dirt/dust and had additional fans blowing the card and it is running cool.
does this mean the graphics card is dead? if so what can i replace it with as the machine is now 5 years old?
the current graphics card is a GeForce 8800 GT.

That last one is not a good sign. Kernel panic when starting from an installer DVD either mean you are using an installer version that cannot boot your model or there's a hardware problem.
I'm thinking your original thought may be valid. It would be provable if you had another GPU to try, but if you don't then I suppose you should replace the one you have. Of those available the ATI 5770 is an excellent replacement choice for both performance and cost unless you want to look for a different replacement card on eBay.

  • Mac Pro Raid 0 (no Raid card) wake from sleep problem

I have a early 2009 Mac Pro with 5 hard drives. One Primary and the other four in the drive bays set up in a RAID 0 array. I don't have a raid card in the computer so software raid I guess.
My computer goes to sleep and sometimes (1 out of every 3 times), any attempt to access anything on the raid array (either through Finder or by using a program that has data on the raid array) causes the system to basically freeze up (get beach ball) and requires a hard reset of the Mac Pro.
I'm losing both data and patience with this. I could just set it to never sleep I guess, but I'm not sure how good that is for the computer and drives.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    TRaymond

My guess is there is something amiss with your hard drives and RAID.
Are they all the same make/model of drives?
    What are those?
    How much capacity?
Did you test each drive first?
This is a simple RAID0 (stripe)?
Have you run Disk Warrior against your system and RAID?

  • Mac pro with vista 32 installed on a second HD; problem with sound level

its good when i log on the mac os HD,
but on the vista hd, the sound is too low.
in device manager the "sound, video and game controllers" displays: High Definition Audio Device.
amd if i try to update it it will say that its got the latest drivers for it.
I tried all 3 jacks on the tower(2 at the back, and one the one in the front), always got tthe same sound level. I also tried disabling the sound jacks and left one activated, same thing.
on the Mac OS, the sound driver is "INTEL HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO DEVICE"
and on Vsta its "HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO DEVICE" is that the problem?

  • I have a mac pro, an ipad2 and now an ipod touch. Problem is my apple ID password is not recognized, and I cannot download or purchase applications. I have had to keep changing my password than it doesn't accept the new one either??? It says it's a year o

I just bought an ipod touch and am trying to make an application purchase on it and to use icloud to transfer to my ipad or laptop.
I cannot sign in.  the password is never accepted. How do I get into applications to purchase or download some of what I have on my ipad?
This sign in on the ipod touch has the address computerservice1614.com  I don't even know what that is.  I signed in with my apple ID but had to keep changing the password because the ipod won't accept any of them.  I am feeling so frustrated and wishing I didn't buy the ipod.  Anyone know how to deal with this.  I am so tired of trying. This is my second day of trying.

I would restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod on your computer and start over. It appears the iPod is associated with another account.  Any media that came with the iPod does not belong to you and di not transfer with the iPod hardware.

  • My MacBook Pro be ballin' - beachballin' that is. Big freeze problems.

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro has decided to start freezing up and beachballing whenever I use Skype, Mail, Plex and sometimes when I use Launchbar. Usually my MacBook locks up for anything from several seconds to a few minutes, making it nearly impossible to get even basic things done. Typically, whenever I load up or type something into the above apps is when it locks up. Mail just locks up whenever I do anything when it's in the foreground. If I leave these apps open, the freezing spreads to other apps I regularly use, such as Safari, or even Activity Monitor or the Force Quit Window when I'm trying to diagnose the problem and quit the problem apps.
It's happened to me a couple of times before over the past year, and I thought I'd fixed it by deleting then reinstalling Skype and Growl (which was also slowing things down a lot) using AppZapper. But that hasn't helped much this time.
It was getting so bad that I tried deleting all my plist files in ~/Library/Preferences, in the hope it was a corrupt plist file. But the same apps cause the same slowdown after having done that, too. Actually, Skype and Launchbar seem a little bit better now. Skype hangs now after I press enter to send a message in Skype. Actually typing is (sometimes, but not always) OK. Launchbar only hangs for a few seconds, and not all the time now. Mail is still awful.
Looking in Console, which I'm not very familiar with, brings up some recurring messages that don't look good:
(I'm not sure if this one is relevant, but it keeps appearing every few seconds)
    18/09/2010 14:20:44 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.jft.PdaNetMac[13262]) posix_spawnp("/Applications/PdaNetMac.app/Contents/MacOS/PdaNetMac", ...): No such file or directory

    18/09/2010 14:20:50 org.apache.httpd[13263] Unable to open logs
The weird thing is I deleted pdanet ages ago. And searching in Launchbar, Spotlight and Houdahspot shows no relevant pdanet files other than my web receipt for buying it. The above error message keeps repeating ad infinitum.
I suspect these errors have more to do with the problem:
    18/09/2010 15:17:27 Skype[14047] Error loading /Library/QuickTime/DigitalVoodoo.component/Contents/MacOS/VoodooSDDV10: dlopen(/Library/QuickTime/DigitalVoodoo.component/Contents/MacOS/VoodooSDDV10, 262): Library not loaded: /Library/Frameworks/DigitalVoodooLib.framework/Versions/A/DigitalVoodooLib

18/09/2010 15:17:51 Skype[14047] Failure with ATSFontGetUnicodeCharacterCoverage(). Disabling font fallback optimization for characters not renderable.
These errors keep repeating as long as I have Skype open.
This message kept repeating when I opened Mail just now:
18/09/2010 15:50:30 Mail[14568] Failure with ATSFontGetUnicodeCharacterCoverage(). Disabling font fallback optimization for characters not renderable.
So perhaps this is a font problem? Does anyone know how to fix this? Any help appreciated. I rely a lot on my MacBook for my work, so the faster I can fix this without having to erase and install, the better. But I'll suck it up and reinstall if that's the only solution.
    Thanks in advance! (^_^)

    Thanks for the reply. (^_^)
I had a look at the links and found I'd attempted much of what was there already.
Step 2 (clearing the font cache) in the font article looked useful, but I've found it's not helped, unfortunately. In fact, these new error messages have popped up in Console since I cleared the font cache and restarted:

Launchbar also produces similar results as the top half of that pile of errors, as well as the previously mentioned Quicktime Voodoo component errors. Perhaps that problem is significant, too, I don't know... Right now, I'm about ready to just give up and erase and reinstall. But that doesn't prevent the problem from happening again, nor knowing what I can restore from backups without resurrecting the same problems... Any takers?

    Problem:
Over the last few months I've had constant problems with freezing, shut downs. This might be in the form of I'll be working in iMovie editing some video and then mouse down into the corner to switch Spaces, the screen will half zoom out then just hang. Mouse won't respond, everything just sits there. I usually have to fix this by holding down the power button until the MBP turns off, then just reboot.
Other times I'll leave the computer on at night, wake up in the morning and it will either be off and as such, I just have to press the power button and it boots up again. Or the screen will be off, metal above the Function keys will be cooking, but the computer isn't responding, just a blank screen. I hold down the power button until it turns off and then reboot again.
These problems were getting worse. It has gotten to the stage where it might freeze a couple of times a day.
Seems the problem only occurs when the MBP is working. I might leave it rendering at night and wake in the morning to find it off etc.
Will also sometimes get horizontial lines in apps. I shut them down and start them up again and it's fine. But it's like the graphics card is struggling big time.
    Actions to Fix:
    - Started with repairing the permissions, but I always found that it had lots of items to repair, would repair then, but then if I verified again, the same things would come up as needing to be repaired. I also tried booting from the OS X DVD and repairing from that version of Disk Utility, but same result.
    - Created new admin user account, to see if problem was just limited to my account. Same problem.
    - Ran AHT from the MBP DVD that came with the MBP and it passed the hardware test. Though I couldn't find anywhere to make it run an extended test. The test I could run would only take about 10 minutes I believe.
    - Erased the HD and fresh install of 10.6.3 from DVD, then software updates  to 10.6.7 (yesterday). Repaired permissions after each step. After the OS upgrade I got a decent list of items that needed to be repaired, and after repair, would still show as needing repair. I checked the KB and it listed a lot of files that might get this error, but that it was ok to ignore them.
    - Was editing video this morning in iMovie again, running Disk Utility on an external drive and boom, the MBP locked up again
I've gone through the /logs/crashlog in both the root and home user folders. After nearly all crashes these are empty, so it's not even reporting it anywhere.
Can anyone shed any light on whhat might be causing the problem?

Actually, when I was at the Apple Store I had both laptops flat, with the screens at 90 degrees. Pushing the screen forward and back with my fingers (via the top of the screen of course), the 15" easily has twice the hinge resistance. With that kind of test, weight isn't a significant factor -- that 17" hinge on a 15" laptop would probably cause the screen to come crashing down, too.
There were a few people in these forums who said their 17" was actually too tight (wish I had that problem!). It seems like a quality/consistency problem that could easily be fixed by A) measuring the force required to move the screen back and forth before screwing the case together, and B) making the hinge tension adjustable.
