Mac Pro 1st gen partitioning? scratch disk?

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 (1st generation is what that means...i guess). I just got a new 1tb hard rive to install in addition to the factory 250GB. I would like to use one or the other as the back-up drive, but my 250GB drive is almost full right now. Can i/Should I partition the 1TB drive to make 500GBs of it a backup drive?? what about a Scratch Disk what is a scratch disk and should i make some part of one of my drives a scratch disk.. i am a little confused about how to make the mac pro most efficient with the hard drive space I have.
I also just installed 4GB more of memory making the total 6gb.
Anything I should be aware of. I am trying to get optimum performance out of Aperture and Photoshop.
Thanks,
Joe

RAM: 4 x 2GB or 8 x 1GB are nice balance, symmetrical memory performance is what Apple called it.
Use the old OEM 250GB as backup and / or emergency work.
Replace it too. WD Caviar 640GB for system. Or 1TB Samsung F3.
You could use the F3 as 300GB scratch and the rest for data or backup.
These are very fast drives, fastest in 1TB for now.
To get optimim, a fast boot drive, separate drive/partition for scratch, 3rd for media, 4th for backup (or go external for backup).
Scratch something out? scratch that? erase - temporary work space.
I'd consider 4 x 1TB. Spread files and tasks out, or turn it into one huge volume (with two sets or more of redundant backups in any case!).
Download and read the manual for SuperDuper to clone and copy volumes.

  • Anyone remember the marketing hype about Mac Pro 1st Gen being first full 64-bit?

Not a biggie as Apple don't really cater for my needs anymore, but I was under the impression that my 2006 Mac Pro was full 64-bit.

  • Mac pro boot camp partition cloned to MBP?

i have a 200 GB mac pro boot camp partition with windows 7 on it and between setting it up and getting all my software customized it has been like doing time in a soviet gulag.
if i create a 200 GB partition on my MBP can i clone this from one machine to another?
it would save me a heck of a lot of time and aggravation
    TIA
p.s not sure if this makes a difference but my mac pro is a first generation deal that required amy burning a image to disk or something along those lines...

Do you know what I do to get 10.5?
Purchase it if the computer doesn't include it.
Also, I don't understand why the drivers are going to be on older software that doesn't have Boot Camp bundled with it.
The drivers are not on a Mac OS X 10.4 CD or DVD. They are on the Mac OS X 10.5 DVD.
Leopard has Boot Camp bundled with it doesn't it? Isn't part of the deal upgrading and improving the drivers?
    Yes.
You say in the above "or use up a Windows installation"
This only applies if the Windows disk or license agreement allows you to create a limited number of installations.
Are you saying here that I could also reformat the drive with XP on it?
You could, but there is little reason to do so.
Do I have to reconfigure my workspaces if I do the second option above?
If you erase the Windows partition, yes.

Generally, it's ok to install on two machines as long as they are both yours and you only use one version at a time.

  • Mac Pro won't boot to disk array after Mac OS 10.6.8 combo update. Array two partition are there, just won't start off them anymore. Help, please

My 2009 Mac Pro with Highpoint RocketRAID 3522 would no longer boot of the disk array as it had before. Boots off internal HD (still running 10.6.2), sees the array in the Finder, both volumes there pass Disk Utility Repair Disk tests, they show up in System Preferences - Startup Disk. TechTool Pro 5.0.7 sees nothing wrong with the primary boot partition. (didn't try the clone still with 10.6.7) **** frustrating. Tried reinstalling latest firmware for card. Nothing reported by the drives in way of any failure. zapped the PRAM, tried booting with option key, it doesn't show the array but two copies of the internal HD. Running out of ideas. Any out there?

I am having the same problem with my HPT 4321.  After upgrade, wont boot.  Shows up everyone as bootable disk (even when holding option at startup) but Mac will not boot off it.  I installed a fresh 10.6.8 copy onto a usb drive and HPT drivers work so might just be something to do with the main drive being bootable.  To complicate things, the Snow Leopard DVD doesn't have the drivers to see the array so cannot use it for troubleshooting.  It will not start in safe mode. Downloaded combo updater to try and re-update but it doesn't let you install it on another drive.  HPT driver installer doesn't allow you to install on another drive so also can't re-install driver.  Only choice seems to be install OS on new disk and recreate everything from scratch, then SuperDuper back to HPT drives and hope that it was a corruption during the update but not sure that it will boot even after all that work.
Anyone have a working computer with 10.6.8 and booting off a Highpoint RAID card?

  • How to install an OS on a Mac Pro without using a startup disk

Good Evening... I have purchased an Mac Pro 4,1 without any HDD attached to it and I have no startup disk for the installation an OS... When I do power on the Mac Pro, I get a flashing folder with a question mark in it! How can I be able to add an OS for two HDDs that I would like to install?

No. Boot the MP using the external drive. If you need to prep the drives, then:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Once the drive has been prepped just clone your external drive to the internal drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      3. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      4. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      5. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the Internal drive. Source means the External startup drive.

  • Using 1st Gen Shuffle in Disk Mode

I have need for a 1Gbyte flash drive all of a sudden, and I realize my 1st Gen Shuffle fills the bill. So I reviewed the manual for using this in Disk mode, which shows a check box option to employ "disk mode" for the device.
Except that the new version of iTunes doesn't actually have that same option in it's settings anywhere. So I can still deselect "open iTunes when device inserted" option, there's no "disk mode" anywhere.
Question, then...does there need to be? Or will it now just work?
    Thanks for any help.

Yes there needs to be, and is: It's lower down the Settings panel. Make your iTunes window bigger by pulling the lower right corner... OR just scroll downwards.

  • Adding 2nd Optical Drive into Mac Pro (first gen) makes both unusable!

    Hey all,
I recently purchased a second DVD drive to go into my first gen Mac Pro 2.66Ghz.
The installation went a little rough, although OK in the end. The IDE cable seemed reluctant to want to stay in a safe place.
Upon booting however, and now had no optical drives installed!
Even System Profiler reported no disc burning capabilities except my external USB CD Burner.
I've taken the second Optical Drive out, which by the way was one of these: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Samsung/SHS202NBLS/
My original Sony (Disguised NEC drive) drive is now working again, although what on earth happened?
Should I try swapping the drives around? E.g the Sony on the bottom and Samsung on top?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated,
    Thanks,

    I have an idea,
Perhaps the newer DVD Drive I have here is "better" than the currently installed one, and therefore doesn't like being connected as the slave (bottom) to the "weaker" master (top) drive?
Could it be something like that?

  • Mac Pro 2nd Gen not shutting down after latest leopard update 10.5.3

I have a mac pro 8 core 2nd gen machine (August 2007) just updated from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 and immediately after doing so the machine usually will not shut down by it self. It goes through the shut down process, exits finder but then the grey spinning dial just keeps going. I left it for 30 minutes like that, and then realised I had to manually force power down by holding the power button. It does that now all the time, except once. I don't know what could be causing this, works fine otherwise, but really annoying as the machine is located in a difficult to reach spot- so when I finish work I have to reach around and hold down the power button to get it to turn off - wouldnt' mind to fix that.

  • Mac Pro 5,1 Start up disk preference   Internal bootable backup

    Hi,
I have a Mac Pro 5,1 running yosemite. My OS is installed on a PCIe SSD and I am trying to make a bootable backup of the OS to an internal HDD in one of the standard HD bays.
No matter how I make the backup (time machine or chrono sync), once a backup of the OS is present in the system my Mac won't boot and I get stuck on the white screen with no apple logo. Deleting the backup resolves the issue.
I have tried reselecting the Startup Disk, as well as resetting PRAM etc.
Has anyone seen this issue before?
Is it bad practice to have a backup on an internal drive?
    Thanks,
    Danny

Oh wow, thanks for this info. You've actually just provided info for another problem which I had given up on finding a solution to...
I have two PCIe sata cards (one single & one double), and through this thread I have identified the single card as Apricorn - I was unsure what make it was...
SLOT 1 - ATI graphics card
SLOT 2 - Apricorn Velocity Duo x2 (OS on Angelbird 250gb SSD + OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD)
    SLOT 3 - Firewire 800/400 card
    SLOT 4 - Apricorn Velocity solo x 2 (empty - no drive)
All backup drives are HDDs in the traditional bays.
I had experienced HEAPS of problems with OWC drives and the Apricorn cards. The OWCs were unable to boot when on an Apricorn card by themselves. For some reason, having the Angelbird and OWC on one card lets the system boot. Seems I might need to update the firmware of the Apricorn cards.
If you have any other info on the backup problem though it would be of great help!
    Thanks,
    Danny

  • Premiere pro cs 4 defaults scratch disks to C Drive

Hi, I have this peculiar problem only with Premiere Pro CS4.
When setting the scratch disks on any drive other than the C drive, they always default back to the C drive.
This does not happen with CS3 or previous.
Premiere creates directories on the selected drive (other than C) but it dumps the preview files back on C, while the newly created directories remain empty.
This happens both on AMD and Intel machines, on windows vista ultimate.
    Any thoughts?
    Thank you

  • MacBook Pro (1st gen Intel) : poor wifi performance vs MacBook (early 2009)

I have an issue with my old _MacBook Pro (1st generation Intel)_ which is much slower than my brand new MacBook (from early 2009) : all the bandwith tests show the _MBP being at 50% speed vs the MacBook_. I use my iPhone on my network as well and is behaving better than the MBP...
Do you have any idea where that comes from ?
    Thanks for your help,
FYI : the MBP is on OS X 10.4 vs OS X 10.5 for the new MB. I have MAC adress filtering for the 3 equipment...

I've had the same problem with my MacBook Pro from Late 2008.
Yesterday, I had a Lenovo and Sony laptop sat right next to my MacBook Pro, and the Macbook was the only laptop that couldn't maintain a Wi-Fi connection.  Usually, it couldn't even keep the connection for more than a minute or so.
I tried changing my Router's configuration (eg change to Channel 1, etc)  but in the end, I gave up and had to buy a Wi-Fi Range Extender device.   It was very easy to install and setup, there isn't even an install CD or software to install..
My MacBook now has a fast, reliable Wi-Fi connection.
What I don't know  (and didn't try)  is whether attaching a 802.11N USB device to my MacBook Pro would've improved it's Wi-Fi connection.  This might've been a cheaper option, but as I wanted my iPad & iPod to also have an improved Wi-Fi connection, I went for the Range Extender instead.

I am looking for a new graphics card for my first generation mac pro desktop (built 2006)  Currently has ATI Radeon X1900XT 512 MB  installed   Any suggestions on where to find one
Alternative may be to get a new machine

For me, the best place for any type of upgrade on your Mac Pro 1,1 (mine is a 2.66) is at Other World Computing.
The only video card available from OWC is the ATI Radeon 5770 HD.

Note: The same video card is also available at the online Apple Store.
I'm hoping to get it soon.
