Mac Pro 2.66 internal drives in a Mac Pro 64bit i7?

Is it possible to just unmount my internal drives from my workhorse Mac Pro 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon tower and mount in my new 8C Xeon 2X2.4g 64bit tower?
Thanks in advance!

It's not clear if your workhorse is an original, or at least early Mac Pro and you new Mac Pro is the 2010 version, but if so, be aware that the drive sleds the internal drives are in are not the same. I don't know what would happen if you tried that swap but I doubt it'd be good for the new Mac Pro.
The drive itself could be transferred from the old sled to the new sled and it would fit but, if the new Mac Pro is, indeed, a 2010, it won't boot because 10.6.4 is the minimum OS needed. You could, however, use it for Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant purposes.

  • I can't see two of my internal drives on my mac pro?

I can't see two of my internal drives on my mac pro?  Any idea's or suggestions on how I can see them again.  They were working last week just fine - Now they don't even show up in the finder? I have video stored on one and the other is just used for extra storage if needed - not really used much.

A drive that will not show BOTH its Make&Model AND a reasonable Size/capacity in Disk Utility has failed.
IF Disk Utility can see those things, use (Repair Disk) to attempt to repair its Directory. It takes about five minutes. If it finishes in 10 seconds, it just repaired the Partition Map and nothing else. Select the Macintosh_HD or whatever you renamed the Volume, and (Repair Disk) again.

  • Can I install windows 7 on a second internal drive on a macbook pro 2011?

Can I install windows 7 on a second internal drive on a macbook pro 2011? I have 2 500 gb. SSD drives in my 2011 MacBook Pro. My plan was to install windows 7 on the 2nd drive. I'm new at owning Macs so I have had Windows on main drive using bootcamp but I wanted to speed up my 17" Mac so I maxed out the memory and added the SSD drives.  Thinking I could put the 2 operating systems on seperate drives I bought to 2 SSD's. Is there any way to do this.  So far I have drawn a blank. Any ideas?

Yes. Just install Windows onto it without using the Boot Camp Assistant to partition it.

  • How do I set up an internal drive in my Mac pro as a mountable network drive

Hi! I basically would like to know how to use one of the internal hard drives in my Mac pro as a mountable network drive to enable me to do full time machine backup and restores for my MacBook pro. Thanks in advance for the help!

If it's just for you, you can access and or all of your Mac Pro drives from your MBP just by logging onto the Mac Pro using the Mac Pro name and password. This is a very bad idea unless you are in a trusted environment but if you're on a home network and you trust yourself, it really works.
I've been using this technique for years on a gigabit LAN in my home. It also works logging on the other or both ways. Just pay attention to things like re-boots and shut-downs.

  • Dual booting separate mac os from separate internal drives

Currently running Mac OS 10.4.11 with Bootcamp and Windows XP Pro. running on Primary HD drive on a Mac Pro 1.1 with a Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor - 2.66 ghz, and 3 GB of ram.  Would like to install a new 3TB hard drive (computer has 3 internal slots for hard drives) and install Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and then upgrade that to OS X Lion (10.7).
Can I then start machine and by holding Option key choose which operating system to utilize?  Reason for this madness is that some of the "old" software on OS 10.4.11 may not work with Snow Leopard.  Will the machine recognize both operating systems and allow me the choice to boot from the original hard drive or from the new (separate) hard drive by utilizing the Option key?

Yes.  The Option key allows selection of any bootable partition on any drive.

  • Anyone using a 1TB internal drive on a MacBook Pro?

Hi. I plan to upgrade the internal drive (250GB) on my MBP to either 750GB or 1TB. OWC sells a 1TB drive from Western Digital. Does anyone have experience with this drive? Thx
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD10TPVT/

Yes, I have this drive installed in my 2010 17". Fits fine. I have heard that it also fits in the 15". A couple of things:
The drive is only 5200 rpm, so expect startup to be a tad slower. Not awful, just a little slower. I never really restart my Mac so this is only an issue every once in a while - mostly during system updates.
This drive has anti-drop/shock protection built-in, unlike the Apple drives. To avoid any issues, I disabled the built-in protection. A quick google will tell you how to do this. It is a couple of lines entered into the terminal. The setting is remembered after the lines are entered.
The one annoying bit that took a little while to figure out was the drive was making *a lot* of noise due to excessive head parking. It is set up out of the box to very aggressively conserve power. There is a solution to this and it is a small program called "hdapm" it is a little command line tool that sets the driver to a less agressive power saving mode at startup. There are also instructions online for this. google "hdapm" for details. You need to download the binary, stick it in a folder, then set up a very small startup script to point to it. All done.
The drive is excellent and huge. Very quiet after the head parking issue was solved. I've been running mine for about 2 months or so now. Highly recommended.

  • Using the internal drive on a Macbook Pro or not?

I am having one external esata disk and two seperate FW800 disk. Where should i put my scratch files? On the internal disk? Should I avoid using the internal disk for a video stream and leave it to accessing the system and Final Cut Pro (6.06) only or can it come into other use as well?
The setup is a MBPro 2.4 Ghz with 4GB of ram.

On my 17" MacBook Pro I use the eSata port for Black X Duet Hard Drive Docking station where I put 2 1TB Hitachi internal drives. They are swappable and are about $80.00US. I use the USB port for my system backup and a G-force 500 MB bus powered portable drive on the FW800 port just for the heck of it. It works out really well for me.

  • Mac G5's 2nd Internal Drive disappears

    Hi,
    I have a G5 with 2 internal drives,
one is called STARTUP and has apps, etc.
The 2nd is/was called MEDIA and had lots of documents
and for some reason has disappeared from my desktop
I did a restart and used Disk Utility but I am not finding it
    Any suggestions please?...thank you

    Hi Evan Kreeger1-
If DU doesn't see it that is usually not a good thing.
Before panicking you might want to open the Mac up and check all of the connections to the drive.

  • Transferring files to new MacBook Pro - but my internal drive is SCSI

    Hello,
I tried to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from my old G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) PowerMac - but it won't start up in Firewire Target Disk mode. I figured out that the internal drive is on the SCSI bus, and it looks like it needs to be on the ATA Bus 0 - is that right?
I don't have a great grasp of these things - so am wondering what you all might suggest I do to transfer files? Is it time to start burning DVD's?
    thanks for your help!!!
    meghann

Sounds like the boot drive on the G4 is running from a PCI ATA card (which makes the drive appear as a scsi drive). And you're right, running it in FW target mode will not allow the new machine to see it.
(When I last did this, I could connect the old machine with FWT mode (boot drive was connected to the stock ATA channel), but the new machine wouldn't see any drives that were connected via the PCI ATA card.)
I think you'll have to figure out another way to transfer files. You could burn discs, or you could network the two with ethernet. It'd be slow but at least you wouldn't have to baby-sit. I think those are your only options unless you have access to an external drive. Might be worth a purchase.

  • Izzy Tutorials Downloads -- Download to my Computer 256 SSD "Internal Drive" on my Mac Mini or to my Lacie Little Big Thunderbolt 512 SSD Dual Raid "External Drive"

I'm starting with a blank slate and zero knowledge.
Both my computer and external hard drive are brand new refurbs.
I bought FCP X from the App  Store and put it on my  internal drive along with Motion and Compressor..
I'm getting the $37 Izzy Tutorials Training Course and probably some others later on.
Should I put them on my Internal or External Drive.
My External has (two) 256 SSD drives built in for 512 total.
    Raid 0 Raid 1
My Internal is 256 SSD Apple
    Thunderbolt connection.
I know my media goes there.
What about this Izzy Series of Download Training Stuff.
    Thanks

    Ok, Thanks
I just clicked the "Download" and it jumped to my Downloads thing at the bottom of my computer screen.
I hooked a Cat 6 Cable from my router to my computer for better service rather than Wifi.
I'm hoping that after it downloads it will give me the choice to "Save" and I can then get it to go to my Lacie.
Hoping it gives me choices as to which of the two 256 drives it has also.
This is all new to me, Thanks

  • Macbook Pro with Dual hard drives. Scratch Disk, Memory 64bit, Raid, Set Up Questions.

Hello, this is my first post.
I just upgraded from the original 2006 17" Macbook Pro to a refurbished 13" Macbook Pro 2.53GHZ 4GB Ram (2009 model).
I bought the MCE Tech Optibay and installed it (if you dont know anything about it, ask me, its amazing.) So now I have 2x 500GB 7200RPM Seagate hard drives installed.
I am running Snow Leopard, CS3, Lightroom 1.4.
I have the main hard drive set up with Snow Leopard and all the Applications. I keep all my files on external firewire 800 drives, except files I am currently working on.
The second hard drive is set up as a scratch disk for Photoshop CS3 and that is it.
I am looking to upgrade to CS5 and Lightroom 3 here within this month or so. Or if I get anxious, tomorrow, haha.
I want to know the best setup I can do with my current set up with CS3 and for my future setup with CS5.
    Any info will appreciated.
-Would some kind of raid set up with my internal drives be better? How does raid work with scratch disks?
-If I upgrade to 8GB memory in my macbook pro, would I even see a difference in performance if I didn't have a scratch disk? Since CS5 and Snow Leopard can use more memory in 64bit.
I think thats all I have on my brain right now. I may have more questions, or I can guarantee I will have more later.
    Thanks alot.

First the scratch. Like you said, most everyone has a different take on scratch discs but I'd guess you're wasting one heck of a lot of hard drive space using all 500 GB for Scratch, did I read that right? If I did read it correctly YES, partition it and get some use out of it!!
I've got a unibody MBP 2.93GHz, OS 10.5.8, CS3 & PS 5 (running in 32bit mode), and 8 gigs of ram. I've partitioned the one 300 GB drive so 50GB is scratch, the other partition is for OS, & Apps, and documents (images).
I use LR 2 first than export to PS 5 to finish up. My photos get to be 300MB to 500MB in size and both versions of PS work on this setup just fine. Using PS 5 in 64 bit mode is faster opening files but NON of my plugin's are 64 bit yet, that's why I'm still stuck in 32 bit mode.
Not knowing what size or kind of files you work on makes giving advice a bit tough but try setting the status indicator (don't know the right name for it) in the bottom left corner of any PS open file to "Efficiency" and watch what happens when you process your files. I rarely see mine drop below 90%, I've got the usable RAM in PS Prefs set to it's max suggested, cut way back on History and Cache.
Can't wait for NIK and others to offer their plugin in 64 bit, later this year is what I was told.
There used to be an old "rule of thumb" with old version of PS about Scratch disc size. I don't remember exactly but it may have been 3 to 5 times the size of your biggest file??
    Good luck, Alan

  • I'm trying to install Mac OSX on an external drive with my Mac Mini

A few days ago, I picked up my new Mac Mini. I'm using the install disk included with the Mini in an attempt to install Mac OSX 10.4.5 onto my external hard drive - a LaCie d2 200GB.
The installer knows the LaCie is there - but it won't let me install it there. I had no problem doing this with my last Mac (Power Mac G4). Does anyone have any suggestions?
Mac Mini Duo Core 1.66Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   LaCie d2 Firewire Hard Drive 200GB

If you are using an Intel mac mini you need to change the partition scheme. Without doing this the Intel Macs cannot boot from the drive.
To do this you need to open Disk Utility, select your drive (not the partition), then select the Partition tab. In there you'll see an Options… button. Click on it and change the partition scheme to GUID Partition Table. Click OK and then apply the reparitioning.
Please be aware that by making this change you will be able to boot your Intel Mac from the drive although a PowerPC drive will no longer be able to use the drive as a boot drive.

  • I can't import files from my mac to my external hard drive on a mac. Works on Windows

I used OS X Mountain Lion and Windows 7. I bought an External Hard Drive Several Years Ago. I can't import files on it, just read it. In Windows i can read and write it. I want to upgrade my OS X Mountain Lion to OS X Mavericks. I am afraid that i will lose all of my files. Please help

That is because the external drive you are using is formatted in the Windows NTFS format, which is fine for Windows.
OS X can READ files from that format but can NOT Write to that format. If you want to use that external drive with both Windows and Mac OS X you will need to reformat it in a format that both Windows and OS X can Read from and Write to.
Those would be FAT32, in OSX it is called MS-DOS (FAT), or exFAT. You do that formatting in either OS X Disk Utility or Windows Disk Management.

  • Mac Pro -- Installing XP and Win 7 on a SEPARATE Internal Drive

I would like to install Windows XP SP2 and Windows 7 onto the second Internal Drive in my Mac Pro. I am planning to install Win XP on the first partition and Win 7 onto the second Partition of Drive 2.
    Will this work?
    Drive 1 - GUID partition Scheme -- 1 partition -- Snow Leopard
    Drive 2 - MBR Partition Scheme -- 2 partitions -- WinXP -- Windows 7
    Drive 3 - MBR Partition Scheme -- 3 partitions -- Linux
Drive 4 - MBR Partition Scheme -- 1 partition -- NTFS Shared Data
Can I use MBR or do I need to use GUID Partition Scheme on my second drive holding Win XP and Win 7?
P.S. I do not plan to use Bootcamp assistant to install WIndows XP and Win 7. I only will be using the Mac OS X Install Disk to install the Bootcamp Drivers.
And What does this mean in the Bootcamp Guide:
"Note: If your computer has more than one internal disk and you want to install
Boot Camp on a disk that isn’t in the first hard drive bay, remove the drives in the lower numbered bays. You can reinstall the drives after you install Boot Camp."
What does Apple mean by lower number bays? Drive 1 or Drives 3 and 4?
And why do I need to remove drives?
    Rob

I thought it might be possible, and while you must use MBR, and while Windows 7 can install on its own without BCA, the same is not true of XP. People have tried, and the conclusion was a no go.
    Don't know what Linux requires.
GPT is fine for data drives though, and is required when you get into drives of 2TB and larger.
As long as you format the drive partition table as MBR you are fine.
The only time when you used GPT you have to also use BCA to add the MBR and have a hybrid partition. GPT actually includes an "MBR holder" to prevent XP and others from wrecking havoc on GPT volumes that they don't support.
Never used XP, and for one purpose alone I just used XP Mode instead.
Apple tech notes are full of misinformation and support for Windows on their own Macs is sadly missing.
BUT: remove any and all drives that are GPT or have OS X during the install of Windows (both XP and 7). Otherwise it won't install. Then put them back. And if you want to play safe, then use the drive bay #1 at the front of the Mac for Windows, yes.

  • Installing XP Pro on a separate internal drive?

I have a Mac Pro with 3 internal drives and would like to install XP Pro on one of the drives.
    My setup is as follows
    Drive 1 OSX/Applications
    Drive 2 Data
Drive 3-It's 1 TB and I would like to use it for part Windows (Office,Games), and part Mac (Games, Videos)
Figured I would use NTFS file system and make 300GB for Windows and 700 GB for Mac
Can someone give me the steps I should take for doing this. I've searched around a little, and watched a C Net video on this, but I wonder if my setup is different from the examples I've seen

    Hi,
for running Windows XP you can use the BootCamp Assistant which is part of OSX Leopard (in the Applications/Utilities Folder).
Print out the Installation Guide found either inside the BC Assistant or from here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ and follow it to the letter.
While maybe not neccessary but advisable: make a backup of your OSX volumes.
Whether you install Windows on the second, third or fourth harddisk is not important, just make sure you choose the correct one.
The BC Assistant gives you the choice to use a secondary or third harddisk fully for installing Windows or partitioning it for use with OSX and Windows (page 7 of the guide).
Make sure that during installation of Windows you re-format the destination with the Windows Installer (page 9+10 of the guide).
Also be aware that with XP you can only use the 32-bit version, since the 64-bit XP version is not supported.
Only with Vista you can use the 64-bit versions, when you have a 2008 or later model of the Mac Pro.
Once you have installed your XP, insert the OSX Leopard DVD while in Windows in order to install the BootCamp Drivers.
And download the appropriate BC Update 2.1 from here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/windows/
Other possibilities to run Windows on a Mac are the Virtualization apps like Parallels, VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox.
    http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/
    http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/
    http://www.virtualbox.org/
And the specialty Crossover Mac http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/
When running Windows on a Mac be sure to use a decent Anti-Virus solution.
    Hope it helps
