Mac Pro 2.66 Quad - Hardware Test error

Hi all !
I am trying to help out someone in another state with their Mac Pro problem so bear with me ...
The machine is a MacPro 2009 I believe, 2.66GHz Quad. and it's having startup issues - at the moment it's NOT starting so I am told !
Before it went totally down someone was able to run the Apple Hardware Test on it and got an error code -
4SNS/1/40000000: TMA4- 128.000
Ive searched and found the 4SNS refers to a possible sensor problem, but the TMA part of the code is unknown ...
It is also showing 1 of the 4 red ram led lights so there looks like a ram issue as well, but Im just wondering if anyone can shed more light on the error above so I can try to pinpoint the problems closer ?
At the moment Im being told by the locals it might be the logic board which of course is quite expensive ...

My rule of thumb when faced with multiple problems is to address any you can get your hands around, and the symptoms may change and clarify the other problem.
A RAM LED stuck on is a memory failure, and that is easy to fix -- remove or replace the failing module.
It is also possible the sensor complaint is about that module -- they have temp sensors on them.
If you are replacing modules in a 2009 or later, don't buy smaller than 8GB replacements, they are cheap enough now at about US$75 from

Mac mini won't boot - hardware test error

my mac mini isn't booting... stuck on the grey apple screen with spinning circle.
have ran the hardware test on the OSX DVD and i get the following error

i assume this means that the HDD is knackered ?

The variable reports on the hard drive are not entirely unusual with a drive that has problems, but it's not a good sign in general that you are having issues with booting to the install disk. That has potential to reflect a controller error that could be minor in nature and even be as simple as a poor connection on the drive carrier which has both drives mounted to it.
Try booting to the OS installer again. If you can get past the language selection screen it means OSX (the very basic version on the installer) has loaded, and that's a good sign. There's no reason from that point that the Utilities menu wouldn't pull down as normal and disk utility run from there. If you can get that far, see if the internal drive is visible on the left of the disk utility app, and if so, select it (there may be two entries for it, either will do) then click the repair disk button.

CAN I ACCESS HD (which is our data server) EVER AGAIN? IF SO, HOW?
Meanwhile we wonder if this is really a hardware error. It all happened during writing a time machine backup.
Probably while writing it, some data was relocated by accident, but we can not 100%-sure remember the sequence of actions :/
This is our trauma history:
- time machine got increasingly slower in writing a backup
- we quit the backup
- we switched off the mac mini (on power button)
- we switched on the mac mini
- we stopped time machine to the rules
- we shut down mac mini via command
- we booted the mac mini in save mode
- we see a loading bar
- no progress after 10th of loading bar
- switched off (power button)
- when we now switch on the loading bar below the apple-logo is all we see + the little wheel
- we started with cmd+alt+p+r pressed
- mac mini restarted but showed the loading bar scenario without progress again
- we started with 'd' pressed and did the hardware test (see above)
- we started with 'alt' pressed but it does not give us the recoverydrive to run the last backup
ANY IDEAS?
IS IT A SOFTWARE- OR HARDWARE ERROR?

Is Temperature Monitor an app or a device? If it's a temperature problem then that is essentially a design problem. Two drive failures in the same Mac mini server in four months combined with the fact that they're not really user serviceable already has me 90% on the way back to more pragmatically designed Linux servers. The Apple Hardware Test error indicates a RAM issue. Install the original RAM and see if that improves the situation.

Original Mac Pro 2.66 Quad any good?

I am considering buying a used Mac Pro. I would like the 2009 Nehalem Quad 2.66, but those cost $1,500+ from what I have seen. I've noticed that the 2006 Woodcrest Quad 2.66 machines can be had for less than $1,000. I currently use a late 2008 MacBook Pro C2D 2.4GHz unibody, with 8 GB OWC RAM, and it is very fast, and does everything that I need a computer to do. My uses are Photoshop CS5, Nikon Scan 4.02, general internet use, e-mail, itunes/iphone, and gaming. Would an older 2006 Mac Pro 2.66 quad be able to do that stuff well? Would it be as fast as my MacBook Pro?
Is the older machine a waste of money and outdated, or still viable?

the mac pro 1,1 has been selling for under $1,000 for the years, sometimes more but that is rare.
Pressure from new 2011 Sandy Bridge laptops and iMac has pushed the price down.
People can run 10.410 which also for some is ideal unless they 'want' to shell out thousands on new software and sometmes new hardware.
Unless you actually own and use one, you won't know.
Or frequent other discussions and what is being said and market.
But $1200 is too much and $800 has been common for the last two years.
But 8-core 2.66s can be installed easily enough and rival any 2009 model other than lack of DDR3 (much cheaper than our FBDIMMs), and of course there is just such a huge selection of one (or two possible) graphic cards. No GTX 580 for you or us unless you run and use it as a PC Window which it does quite well also.

Mac pro 2.66 Quad Core - boot drive mirrored, replace?

I have a Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core system.
I got all 'sexy' when I set it up - loaded four 1-TB drives in the 4 bays, Mirrored the boot set, also mirrored the secondary set for data.
I am getting ready to have these guys filled up (I do lots of video, pics, etc), and am thinking about 'growing' the drives to 2TB or even 3TB disks (mirrored of course, I'm paranoid).
So I am thinking about the 'how' of moving my data to the larger drive, getting things set up. I have not had any of the drives fail, so I haven't needed to do a swap out yet.
Can I simply take out one of the mirrored boot drives, put in a larger drive, and it will then rebuild the mirror?
or if anyone has some info they can point me to, I'd appreciate it.

You cannot just add a larger drive and grow your RAID Volume size. You need to create an empty larger RAID Volume and COPY the data to the larger Volume, e.g., from your Backups.
Mirrored RAID is NOT Backup. It merely extends the time to repair to keep a drive failure from becoming a data disaster. RAID gives you no protection from human error, crazy software or file problems that happen "just because". You still need backup.
One of the best ways to get increased performance from a computer with the ability to support multiple Internal drives is to keep only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files including paging/swap on the Boot Drive, and move everything else off. This dramatically reduces competition for the Boot Drive and everything speeds up. A Velociraptor is a little faster, and an SSD is incrementally faster still.
If that is all that is on the Boot Drive, you do not need to RAID it, since it can be reproduced from DVDs or downloads in short order. All your User files and Preferences are on other drives..
Implementing this would suggest a single small fast Boot Drive, typically with an offline clone as Backup for emergencies, and forget about RAID-ing the Boot Drive.

Using a Mac Pro w / Apple Internal Hardware RAID Card?

Anyone using a Mac Pro with a Apple Hardware RAID Card 2010?
( I have a 12 Core )
Is it worth the $600-700 ?
How much faster than the software RAID 0?
I see Hamm's RAID tips chart .. but it doesn't include such options .. plus it is based on a PC system.
Any tips would be great ..
I find many areas where the application is slow / unresponsive .. and I'm not sure where the bottleneck is ... Maybe the hardware RAID will solve it?
I'm really am impressed with CS5 .. it would be even better with some adjustments .. but I am absolutely disappointed with sluggish performance on my top-of-the-line Mac Pro 12 Core.
This is not what I expected for a $8,000 machine.
Some users says that the port of CS5 for the Mac has taken a back seat to the Windows version at Adobe.
I can't imagine that Adobe would not put 100% effort into Mac products.

I have a 2009 Mac Pro 3.33GHz Quad core w/ Apple RAID card, 16GB RAM from OWC, and Apple's Radeon HD 5870 GPU.
I have RAID 0 set across 3x1TB drives internally, and the standard 640GB drive for OSX and all program files. I set all video assets, renders, previews and such on the 3TB RAID.
This seems to work wonderfully. I built this system specifically to edit a feature film shot on P2 DVCProHD, and I've been impressed with how it handles it. This was all built prior to CS5, which took me by surprise. Had I known nVidia would become such a problem for Apple, I would have built a PC, but that's another story.
I just started a new project in CS5 on the same system, this time using H.264 video from my Nikon D7000, and so far, it seems to play just as nicely, despite not having hardware acceleration via CUDA technology. Yellow bars on top, even. I haven't had any problems with clips taking a long time to populate on the timeline or any of that, so perhaps the RAID card helps there.
All this aside, I've already decided to upgrade my RAID for another reason. Right now, my backup is performed via an eSATA-connected external drive through a PCI eSATA card. After every edit session, I dump everything on the RAID onto the external drive, and it goes much faster than the old FW800 transfer used to. I'm about to replace my Apple RAID card with an Areca card and set up a 4-bay RAID 3 via an SAS connection. This will allow for excellent data throughput while offering more security than my current RAID 0 / manual backup system, and free up the internal drives for backups, exports and render files.
I believe in hardware RAID, but I'm not as knowledgeable as Harm and others are about it. I had my Mac built to order with the Apple RAID card, so I have no experience using Premiere with a software RAID. Due to my smooth experience using it, I think it was worth it, but plenty of people say the Apple RAID card is rubbish, and to go with Areca or Atto cards. I didn't know about them until after I built my system, and even though it will cost a couple thousand to upgrade my RAID from this point, I expect to have an even better system than I already have.

Mac Pro Thunderbolt, USB3, etc. hardware upgrades...

Feeling a bit left out in 2 years since I bought my Mac Pro with no real hardware upgrades for my Mac Pro.
Can anyone comment on what they've done to keep their Mac Pro updated with the latest?
- Thunderbolt. I was surprised this wasn't in the updated 2012 Mac Pro. Has anyone heard of any third party thunderbolt cards? I've gone ahead and purchased a Thunderbolt hard drive for my Mac Book Air that also has a FireWire 800 port. I'm planning on using Apple's Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter (intended for MBA and MBP laptops) in reverse and use the adapter on the Thunderbolt hard drive to connect it to my Mac Pro tower's FireWire 800 port. At least this way when Thunderbolt does arrive for us I can just stop using the adapter. - USB 3.0. Has anyone found a good reliable USB 3.0 card for the Mac Pro? Again I was surprised Apple left this out of the 2012 refresh. I like the faster speeds over FireWire 800 and if folks have found a good working USB 3.0 card that works I'll gladly put one in my tower. - Display card. Anyone have recommendations on a better display card than the default one Apple shipped? Apple's original ATi Radeon HD 5770 works like crap with HDMI (mini display port or DVI), especially to my new Samsung 27" HDMI monitor. I'd love to get a new Apple Thunderbolt Display and refuse to buy the antiquated Apple Cinema Display. Seeing Apple's new Mac Mini with both HDMI and Thunderbolt gives me hope, but the Intel HD Graphics 4000 chipset seems pathetic. I did like that Apple gave the new iMac a NVIDIA Kepler GPU so maybe there is hope for the Mac Pro yet.
- Anyone find anything useful to put in the extra optical drive slot? The dream of a BlueRay recorder with Lightscribe support and Mac drivers seems long dead. I'd love to see some innovation like a removable SSD drive bay or something better than the coffee cup holder it has become.

If there are Mac Pro users who like to work in the dark I would highly recommend the Moshi Luna backlighted keyboard. It works great and allows me to video edit without having to strain my eyes with uncessary room lights in order to see the keyboard. It sure beats the USB powered LED I was using to shine a light on Apple's extended keyboard! I still have to switch from Apple's Magic Trackpad to Magic Mouse when I bootcamp to Windows 7 (the trackpad drivers are not robust enough under Windows unless someone has found a solution).
I also ran into a horrific issue with Paragon's HFS+ Win 7 drivers hosing my Mac drives when I tried to use Sony's PMB software to copy HD movies to my Mac drives (NEVER AGAIN).

Asus makes a card but it only works with certain motherboards made by them. Doesn't exactly have to be installed 'at the factory' but could be interpreted as such.
Until I start seeing PCIe graphics cards that support Thunderbolt either directly with a Thunderbolt connector on the card or an internal Display Port to Thunderbolt connector I'm not sure I would want a display that connects only with Thunderbolt.
HDMI and Display Port is well tested technology. Many displays are available.
Limited (i.e. none to my knowledge) options at this time for discreet graphics cards that support Thunderbolt. So either you use either the Intel integrated graphics chipset (low performance) for video or a non-Thunderbolt display with a discreet graphics card.
If you daisy chain devices you have to share the bandwidth much like you do with Firewire.
Thunderbolt is great for laptops a small footprint computers because it extends the PCIe architecture outside of the computer giving you the option of using higher data capacities associated with PCIe. But since Mac Pros already have four PCIe slots why would you want to use up 4 PCIe lanes for a dedicated interface that is still in it's infancy?

ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB for Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core Xenon

I have the option of picking up an ATI Radeon HD 4870 1 GB graphics card to go with my soon-to-be-new MAc Pro 2.66 Quad core. I see know that Apple can upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB, but that card is not available to me at the moment. Will the 1GB do the job without overheating the system? Am new to the Mac Pros. Need it for the Windows gaming portion of the system. Am using the rest for graphics and photography.

If the MAc Pro 2.66 comes with Snow Leopard, why would I have to upgrade my OS?
OK. So, if got the MAc version, it would work A-OK without overheating?

Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core 1GBRAM, how much more RAM and HOW?

I just got my Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core, and I had a budget so I left the RAM down @ only 1GB because I knew I could upgrade it later. Well later is here & I want to put more in it, but I hear it is a little more complicated than the sensless shoving of big ram chips into empty slots...
I am a heavy user of Logic 7, soon to be of Logic Studio, and hopefully I will be using AutoCAD at home soon (for school). How much RAM would be optimal for me to eventually have? Right now I think I can afford to purchase 2GB more, but I dont know how exactly to put it into my machine. Right now it has a 512MB per xeon.
Can anyone help me out?

I just pulled out 1GB (2 x 512MB) simms in replaced them with 4GB (2 x 2GB) simms.
I had added more memory as 2 GB (1x2GB) and ran out of space. Now I have a total of 11GB RAM:
1GB = 2 x 512MB
2GB = 2 x 1GB
8GB = 4 x 2GB
Leaving me with 2x512MB simms sitting in the box on the self. Sure wish I knew someone local I could give these things to for a reasonable price. Anyway, I wouldn't go any higher than 2GB simms (4GB) as that seems to currently have the best price/space ratio. Crucial is good enough and order it from NewEgg.com or MacConnection.com and you'll get a good price (I got mine at MacConnection.com).

Thanks - Even though I'm years out of warranty I got chat help from Apple (I said they should help me since the codes aren't published.) We covered three different questions, and although I didn't get a specific decoding of the error code, I got confirmation of what other comments here imply - it might have helped that I indicated I'd already been here - and useful links to how to do back ups, including to CD(s). (I don't have a lot of data on this computer yet)
Now I need to figure out how to decide how hot-to-the-touch is "too hot" for the metal frame at the top of the iMac to decide whether I'm getting adequate fan performance or insufficient. While chatting I initially reported it was cool at the bottom and warm at the top. Apple hadn't asked, but their response prompted me to feel it again, and I'd say the top was hot, not warm - I updated but Apple didn't comment further except to conclude after addressing the other questions that I should take it in for further assessment - don't really want to bother with that.

I posted this in Bootcamp but haven't received any replies so I am reposting it here where perhaps it really belongs.Is it possible to install Windows 7 64 bit on a 1st Generation Mac Pro 2.66Ghz?
Apple suggests that it's not possible and yet I've seen several Googled posts where the users have successfully installed 64 bit on a 1st Generation Mac Pro. The problem is that they've done this creating a bootable iso disk(whatever that is) using a Windows computer with imgburn and windows commands. I'm pretty good at following instructions but I haven't seen any instructions on how to install Windows 7 on this machine using a Mac based approach.
I'm using BootCamp and was able to partition the drive into NFTS and "proceed" with installation; however all the installations failed during setup and Windows would not boot; disk repair was not possible. Besides, from what I've gathered, 32 bit is problematic around memory issues.
When I try installing 64 bits, I never get past the "select cd rom 1 or 2" message where the keyboard won't work. It is at this point where others say they have successfully proceeded with moving forward by creating a bootable iso disk.
Problem is it's all Windows based with exe files and presupposes I already have Windows running.
I'm not sure I really understand how to create an iso disk, but I do have ROXIO TOAST 10 which is capable of burning "ISO" disks.Does anyone know how to do this and/or can you point me to a place where there are instructions on how to proceed?? While I realize Apple says that some mid 2006 mac pros aren't supported, there are multiple posts of windows 7 users successfully installing Windows 7 on a 1st Generation Mac Pro.

Mac Pro 2.66GHZ Quad Core

I have a March 2009 Mac Pro dual quad core running Win7 Pro 64 bit. I have Windows installed on a dedicated internal hard drive. There are no partitions, the entire drive is for Windows use.
Here's how I installed it, I did not start with BootCamp. Make sure the drive you're going to use for Windows doesn't have any important files on it because it will be formatted.
1. Update Snow Leopard
2. Place the Windows cd in the Super Drive
3. Shut down the computer
4. Remove all the hard drives except the one you want Windows installed on. Keep track of the order they are in and at the end replace them in the same order.
5. Boot the computer holding down the Option key
6. Boot to the Windows cd
7. Install Windows and format the drive to NTFS
8. When Windows needs to restart during installation you'll need to hold the Option key and boot to Windows, not the Windows cd.
9. After Windows installs, place your Snow Leopard disc in the Super Drive
10. The Drivers for Windows will be installed along with a Windows version of BootCamp.
11. Go to Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update
12. Update again until it's done.
13. You'll also find a BootCamp under Control Panel, check it out.
14. Shut down the computer and replace the hard drives in their original order
14. Now if you turn on the computer it will boot to Snow Leopard, but if you hold the Option key during boot you can select Windows or Mac.

Instead of getting a wireless card for the Mac Pro, you might want to consider getting an 802.11ac wireless bridge device that would enable you to connect more than one device to it by Ethernet cable and to eventually take advantage of the faster 802.11ac wireless standard.

Trying to track down fast running fan that will not reset and this error came up.

only apple techncians have access to what those codes mean. It is sensor related, but as it is a hardware problem, you need to bring it into an Apple store or AASP to have it correctly diagnosed and fixed.
