MAC PRO 2.66 vs DP 2.3 PPC

Current system DP 2.3 with 4 gig ram
Looking to buy MAC PRO 2.66 1 gig ram
Would there be a major difference in performance with logic?
Thanks

There will be some difference in performance - I believe it would be much more noticeable if you also had 4Gb of RAM in the Mac Pro though.
Either way, it won't play back your songs any faster...

  • Cannot send email from 3 accounts Mac Pro

My brand new Mac Pro cannot send email using Gmail, Shaw, or iCloud.  At times I can send a simple test message, other times I cannot send.  It seems the more data in the email, it for sure cannot be sent.  The sent messages get stuck in the Out Box.  Full green lights, no red lights in the connection diagnostics window.  Any help in this regard will be much appreciated.

thank you for your reply, I did this with the same problem.  Turns out that I went to FAQ section and went to the "Sharing" section of "system preferences"  and changed my computer name by removing all spaces and apostrophe where it lists my computer name under Mac Book Pro, and problem solved.

  • Using a serial Wacom tablet on a Mac Pro

I have a good Wacom tablet with serial port interface that I would like to connect to a Mac Pro.
Is there some way to do this? Is there any sort of serial to usb adapter or would that not work with a Mac Pro?
    Thanks for any advice.

I don't think so. See these knowledge base articles from Wacom:

  • Mixing Memory Mac Pro 2.66 Xenon

    Hello all!
Alright I am trying to figure the best configuration that I can afford for a memory upgrade to my Mac Pro. I am looking to spend somewhere south of $200.
I currently have the following memory configuration (3GB):
    DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1: 1 GB
    DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2: 1 GB
    DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1: 512 MB
    DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2: 512 MB
I wanted to expand it quite a bit more and see on NewEgg that they are charging appx 65.00 for (2 x 1GB) and 80.00 for (2 x 2GB). It's definitely a better price per GB to get the 2 x 2GB but would I see a large performance increase?
I have been reading on the message boards that it is best not to mix memory but it is suggested to fill all the slots with the same size memory.
I guess it just kills me to take out all of my existing memory to put in just the 4GB of new memory.
    Could anyone provide any suggestions?
Thank you for your time in advance!

You have 3GB, which is on the lite side.
The ideal for that model is 4 DIMMs.
Without knowing if you are a light photoshop, or what you use it for, Apple calls 4 x 1GB for FCP (and audio apps) "symmetrical memory."
And I would look at 4 x 2GB and pull your 3GB, maybe sell it once you know the new memory is fine after a month.
Are you seeing page outs? multiple swap files?
    Go to folder: /var/
Maybe you are better off with faster drives, new boot drive or for scratch. A WD 10K 150GB VelociRaptor for $180 even.

  • Is my mac pro's nVidia 8800gt dead. B&W lines across my screen only

Hi, I run a Mac Pro 2008 oct core system. The specs are as follows:
    dual 2.8GHz quad core processors
Snow Leopard with all software updates
16GB RAM DDR2 (Pre-DDR3 mac) (apple certified RAM, so won't break my warranty)
Hard drives are set in two raid arrays, there are four 1.5 TB drives, each set to pairs of raid 0 for 3 TB drives. One raid array is set to time machine the other is my startup disc.
    dual DVD RW drives
N-Videa 8800GT graphics card (Shipped with my mac)
using a DVI to HDMI adapter to connect to a 40" Samsung LCD TV as a monitor (has always worked flawlessly)
I have upgraded a lot of the parts myself and have a fair amount of knowledge of how to do my own upgrades. My system today crashed on me after waking from sleep mode and attempting to use the web. Now when I try rebooting it gives me a screen that is even lines of black and white, nothing else. I do get the Apple beep noise like normal so my assumption is it isn't going to be the memory. I have cleaned off, reseated, and tried different slots with my graphics card, and both DVI ports, same effect. I am pretty sure this is the graphics card demanding to be replaced, which I have considdered upgrading anyway in the past. Most of my computer activities involve watching HD quality movies and TV shows and playing games with high graphic requirements at maximum settings, so using a top of the line graphics card is to be expected.
What I am posting here for is just getting a confirmation that other people agree with me that this is the problem so I do not waste my money on a new graphics card. Please let me know opinions, I would like to have my computer running swimmingly in the near future. Thanks in advance, I appreciate any help I can get.

Most people often seem to think that after a system freeze they don't need to repair their boot drive.
Over the years, Disk Warrior stands out as indispensable.
ie, don't rely on the restart alone to repair and fix, and you probably don't want to trust and rely on just Apple First Aid.
Boot from another drive and run Apple First Aid followed by Disk Warrior; keep backups of your system you can boot from. Clone your system with SuperDuper. Clear out system caches.
You don't need to buy Apple RAM and its prices to have certified RAM, Crucial and others are fine. Sometimes even better.
I like a fsst, small, boot drive and keep it just to OS/Apps; everything else, media files, data, whatever, on other drives. Multiple backups and redundancy. TimeMachine doesn't benefit or perform any faster with RAID, I've tried just to see.
I would slice off some space for an emergency boot drive so you can OPTION boot to that and run First Aid and other maintenance.
Then worry about hardware, and maybe run some hardware tests.
And for a good "is it software or hardware" do a clearn install of Apple OS and updates (only) - needs less than 30GB.

  • Can't Get MacBook Pro and Mac Pro to Network

I have a MacBook Pro (2008 - 2.5 Ghz. Core 2 Duo with 4 Gb of RAM running OS X 10.6.7) that I have been connecting to my Mac Pro (2005 - 2 2.66 Ghz Xeon with 20 Gb of RAM running OS X 10.6.7) through an Ethernet switch on my school's network. This has worked without a hitch for years, but when I upgraded to 10.6.7 recently, the MacBook and Mac Pro fail to network. On the MacBook Pro, the Mac Pro's icon doesn't show in the shared area, and on the Mac Pro, I can see the icon for the MacBook Pro, but when I click on the icon to connect, I get the message that "Connection Failed There was an error connecting to the server (name of my MacBook Pro). Check the server name or IP address, and then try again." I have tried a direct connect using the "Connect to Server" under the Go menu on both machines, using their IP addresses, but no luck. Is there something I need to re-set to get these two to talk again? I have other Macs on the same network that my MacBook and my Mac Pro can see, and both machines can connect to them. They just can't connect to each other.
Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have on  how to fix this.

I fixed the problem by re-setting the default values for my VirusBarrier X6 anti-virus program.

  • How to allow multiple users login to a MAC PRO without interruption?

I have a mac pro, which runs Yosemite, (2013 module) to be used as a server. However, I have difficult to let multiple users to use the mac simultaneously.
    Objective:
One person uses the mac directly on his desktop, while the others to login remotely though VNC from PC (win 7/Linux).
The users have their own workspace, and they will not interrupt each other.
    What I tried:
I created two mange accounts on the MAC.
Account 1 was used to directly login on the mac desktop.
Account 2 was used to login to the mac from a PC though VNC. (I also tried this from a Centos workstation with the Tiger VNC viewer)
    Problem:
When account 2 is login, the location monitor will automatically change to that account as well. Both accounts shared exactly the same screen, mouse & keyboard actions. It is impossible to let multiple users to use the MAC pro simultaneously without interruptions.
If I use "hdiutil attach" to mount a dmg file though SSH with account 2, the folder will automatically show in the local desktop login with account 1.
    Question:
I read something about the "Per-user screen sharing". It says, "You can remotely log into a Mac with any user account on that computer and control it, without interrupting someone else who might be using the computer under a different login." Is it possible to do this from a PC or Linux client?
If the problem is simply due to the poor functionality of the build-in VNC service in Yosemite, I appreciate your help to suggest some other decent VNC server for Yosemite. I know the Vine Server (OSXvnc), but I failed to install it on the mac because it is incompatible with the Yosemite.
Does the SSH is supposed to work in this way in OSX? I mean the local account can see the folder mounted by another account though SSH.
If any specific version of Yosemite is required to allow multiple users to access a mac simultaneously? Just as the win 7 professional allow only one user to login in at each time. But with the remote desktop server of windows, multiple users are able to use the same computer at the same time without any problem.
If you familiar with any of the above questions, please help. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.
I know the best way to get the solution is to direct call the apple support. However, it is really not easy to call them. Because it always results with long waiting time and then the people pick up the phone will transfer my call to an expert who will make me to describe the problem again.
Since I'm not interested in the technique details of all the problems, it is also grateful if you would provide a direct instruction to let me setup the computer for the purpose.
Thanks you very much for your kindly help.

I cannot help with the screen sharing, although I have just tried it with a RealVNC client on an iPad and it seemed to work OK.
However on the disk showing on all users desk tops have you unchecked the "ignore ownership on this volume" check box? You can check the drives permissions with CMD i command.

  • Multiple displays with 15"and 19"monitor using a VGA splitter on my Mac Pro

Hi, so I have a brand spanking new Mac Pro and have been using a cheap, basic 15" monitor with it. As I'm doing lots of Edit/graphics work I've just purchased a new monitor, it's a 19" Acer flatscreen. Now I'm hoping to work the same display across both monitors, so I can set up my preview window on the 15" and do my work on the 19" screen.
The Mac has two DVI output sockets in the back, both monitors are VGA but I only have one DVI to VGA adaptor. Though I do have a VGA splitter! So I've tried going from one DVI socket to VGA, then put the splitter into that and then each monitor into each split socket, if that makes sense? I now have the same display on each screen i.e. while I'm typing this I'm looking at it twice but I want to see it once over two screens, how do I adjust this, there's no option in display settings?
Is it simply that I need to buy another DVI to VGA adaptor and use the other port? Just looking to save myself a tenner, that's all!
    Thanks!
    Alex

Yep, you're right! Thanks, working now, very useful.

  • 2 Users simultaneously using a mac pro

I'm not sure this is the correct forum for this, but here is what i'd like to achieve: Have 2 users each with their own keyboard and monitor using one mac pro tower... i know they can run multiple monitors, but what about 2 keyboards and users... this is doable on most other unix based systems ive used in the past (sgi irix and suns).
    Any ideas?

  • Mac Pro has slowed to a crawl - Please Help Me!

    Hello,
For some time now my Wireless or Wired Internet connection using my Mac Pro has slowed to almost nothing. For example, This page took 5 mins to load and now Internet use has become unusable.
I feel its my Mac Pro because all other Apple Computer run very fast wirelessly. I have (2) New iMac's (1) Apple TV and (1) Apple iPhone. All stream and surf the Internet blazingly fast.
My Mac Pro is constantly being redirected to other sites (mostly **** related) and a huge amount of Pop ups (even though pop ads are disabled in Safari). All Internet browsers perform the same on my Mac Pro or ANYTHING Internet related including WoW, Software updates or even iTunes Music Down loads.
I really feel that in some way (which is shocking) I am infected with "something" that is making my computer crawl on the Internet. Redirection of websites is just now very aggravating.
I am looking at the (2) Original Disks that came inside the Mac Pro Box. I'm seriously considering wiping my system clean and starting from scratch.
I currently hold NOTHING on my Factory 320GB HD other than programs.
I have installed (2) 1TB drives and created a RAID slice thus creating a single HD icon on my desktop that reads 1.8TB. Thats is where all my Music, Photos, and Movies reside.
    My question is....
When I wipe my system will that RAID be broken? Will I lose everything on those 2 drives or will using the restore CD's leave all that information in tact?
Please let me know before I proceed.
    Thank you for your time.
    John

Your RAID won't be touched. But back it up today if you haven't yet!
I use Firefox for security with noscript and some other filters, but I also hardened the router firewall to manually block services, ports and add rules - both incoming and outgoing.
You might want to look at LittleSnitch or NetBarrier and do some logging.
I've seen/heard where older routers and modems were fine, but not with Mac Pro or with Intel Macs in general and needed to be replaced or firmware updated. Problems with the latest updates for Airport have been seen by some, and worth checking into - on forums, news sites or hit google.
And of course check what processes are getting loaded and run; manually delete caches, history, metadata, even the bookmarks cache.
    ~/Library/Caches/Metadata
There are issues with fake Flash updates; normal sites (like CNN) suffering from SQL-injection. Best to run with javascript off for now.
Might want to look into ClamXav and other malware protection. But I would switch and see how Firefox and Opera behave. And turn off java, script, and plug-ins while you consider your options and try to find out why.

  • IPod Touch 2g no longer recognized by Mac Pro

Earlier this week my Mac Pro stopped recognizing my 2g iPod Touch (doesn't show up in iTunes at all).
    So far I've tried:
    * Using a different USB port (ports tried work fine with other peripherals)
    * Restarting the iPod
    * Restarting the Mac
    * Deleting & recreating iTunes library (per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451)
    * Deleting & reinstalling iTunes (per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224)
    * Wiping iPod
    * Deleting & reinstalling Mobile Device support (per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747)
Despite all of this, the Touch fails to show up in iTunes -- the cable & iPod are fine, as they sync properly with our iBook (which, unfortunately, has none of my media on it, nor the disk space for it).
    What's the next step?

I wouldnt think it is un-fixable, just have to narrow down where the issue is.
Im assuming since you reinstalled iTunes that the current version(8.2.1) is installed. When you uninstalled iTunes, did you just do iTunes and the iTunes helper? or did you remove all of the plist files as well?
I would follow http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747 to remove apple mobile device and do http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224 all the way through including the com.apple.iTunes files and then reinstall iTunes so that it replaces both iTunes and AMDS at the same time.
Is the iPod charging when its connected?
I do apologize for acknowledging that you said the iPod did work on your Macbook in your first post.

  • HT1338 cinema Display 30" no longer recognized by my mac pro? What can I do? It worked fine until now.

Cinema display 30" no longer recognized by my mac pro. Until now it worked without problems, then after a crash it fails to recognize the display.
Now it runs in a far lower resolution. What can I do?
I tried to get da driver for it, but could not find any.

Try the other DVI port on the graphics card.  On early Mac Pros, only one port is the dual-link DVI needed for full resolution on the 30" display.  Make sure the display's USB cable is plugged into the computer.

  • My Mac-Pro can no longer see my local network after install

My older Mac-Pro hard drive died & I had to install Snow Leopard again from scratch. For some reason, now I can't see any of the Windows PC on my network. I CAN see the Internet (I'm on the Mac-Pro writing this) & I can see my old Mac with Tiger, but I can't seen any of the Windows XP or 7 systems. I know, they XXXX but, I still need to see them so I can taunt them & make fun of them etc...
Here's the troubleshooting part of the show:
I CAN ping them by name from Terminal & from the Network Utility.
I can NOT see them when I go to Finder > Go > Connect to Server & enter their names.
I've rebooted 4 or 5 times & installed the latest updates.
I could really use some help on this, I have about 20 computers on my network & I used to be able to see them all.

For anyone who may have this problem in the future, I thought I would post a reply myself on how I solved this problem.
The problem turned out to be my router. In the middle of the night I had an idea, so I rebooted my router & switches & now ALL the computers (even the Windoze ones) show up!

  • IPhone 3G is not recognized by iTunes installed on MAC PRO

I have attempted to connect iTunes after Mac Pro system restore with iPhone 3G, but iTunes does not recognize any connection from iPhone. When I plug iPhone into my MacBook Pro iTunes immediately recognizes iPhone and begins sync process. I restored iPhone software while on MacBook Pro, but did not sync MacBook Pro iTunes. With factory settings restored, I attempted to sync iPhone with Mac Pro iTunes and again iPhone was not recognized by iTunes iPhone connected via USB. Any suggestions?

  • Many random abrupt restarts with ML and my Mac Pro

Any help would be appreciated with this...
Ive recently clean installed Mountain Lion with only a handful of 3rd party apps on my 2009(?) Mac Pro and seem to be getting  about 3-6 random Kernal Panics and/or abrupt restarts a day.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason for them as they all happen when doing differant tasks.  Last time it happened I was only browsing in Safari with itunes playing in the background.  iTunes started to skip like a scratched record 4 or 5 times then suddenly the computer shut down and restarted itself.  Below is the report that I sent to Apple.  Any idea whats causing the problem or suggestions on a fix?  If more info is required Id be happy to post.  Thanks!
