Mac Pro 2006 or Mac Mini 2014?

Hello everyone,
I want to buy a Mac.  I have the choice between a used Mac Pro 2006 (8 cores with 2 quad core 2.66ghz, 32gigs of ram, wifi, bluetooth, superdrive, radeon hd4890 for mac, hdd 250gigs. Yosemite installed.) or a brand new Mac Mini (2.6GHz 4th Gen dual-core Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB of RAM and Intel Iris Graphics).
The price for each is 750$.
What would you do?
Thank you!
neuhaus3000

The new Mac Mini is a Joke.
Dual Cores, what is this early 2000's
Geekbench of 6000+
I don't see that paticulary MacPro, but even the original had a Geekbench score of around 6000.
You can check at everymac.com
As for video the ATI Radion hd4890 Seems to be much better

The only real advantages are USB3,Thunder Bolt2 and size.

  • Mac Mini 2014 Not reconising USB connections for ipads

Hi, we have a Mac mini 2014 1.4GHz and currently having some issues with it. The Mac mini is used in an education setting. We are using the Mac mini for updating iPads in conjunction with a sync and charge trolly. When we are using the Apple Configurator to create profiles to push out to the iPads not all are being recognisetheir are 26 iPads in total and only a maximum of 18 is ever detected. ihave tried with my own personal laptop which is a MacBook Pro early 2011 and detects all 26 using the Apple Configurator. Does anyone know about USB limitations on the new Mac mini's? Also, we have had a replacement from the supplier and still the same.
Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks Gary. Given your confirmation that it should be possible, I've taken the fact that the external drive doesn't appear as a choice in "startup disk" as an indication that my disk is the issue. I did try two alternatives method to get the .iso to disk given your hint,
The first, using UNetbootin rather than my linux distribution and it does come back with a message rather specific after it finishes:  "The created USB device will not boot off a Mac.  Insert it into a PC, and select the USB boot option in the BIOS boot menu".
The second, using Disk Utility but the restore section for the target volume doesn't seems interested in me dragging the .iso to the 'source' field.
And that's with two different OS's .iso. so assuming that's not the right alternative either.
Few questions from there if I may,
Is there anything special I should take care off while doing the formatting to boot from a mac (mini)?  (I'd welcome any link to a validated method)
what do you do when you have a non mac keyboard? (I had used "C")
should the PXE method have worked as well on the mac mini?
(Thanks again for that first response Gary)

  • Mac mini 2014 w/OS 10.10.1  Still won't wake from sleep correctly

Yes, the wake from sleep still exists with Mac mini 2014 and Yosemite using a Benq 2760H monitor.  AND, OS 10.10.1 DON'T FIX IT!!!
I've been monitoring the forum for several weeks now looking for a solution.
And today, the email arrived announcing 10.10.1 listing a fix for the Mac mini/Yosemite wake from sleep problem!  Finally- a fix!
But alas, a false alarm.  Quickly updated the OS to 10.10.1, restarted the computer, check to see that 10.10.1 was listed and then put the unit to sleep.
Anxiously waited for 3 or 4 minutes and pressed a key, and nothing!!!!   After a minute or two there were several screen flashes, waited a few more minutes and still nothing.
Where do we go from here?
I've been a Mac user 20+ years and experienced several problems but never have experienced such a long delay in even having a problem addressed, much less fixed.

I am having this problem still, even after updating with the latest combo. I find that my Macbook Pro (using 10.8.5) will show the beach ball spinning with a black screen. I have to restart the laptop in order to clear this problem. Very annoying since this can happen two or three times a day.
You mention 'plists'. What are they? And if you delete them, are they recreated automatically upon restart?

  • Mac Mini 2014 Oct cannot wake up after sleep

Mac Mini 2014 Oct Version, cannot wake up after sleep by typing on keyboard or moving mouse (both hardwired USB) if external HDMI screen goes to sleep mode too (usually after 1 min if no signal coming from the MAC). To wake up, I ust turn off and turn on the screen and keep typing on the keyboard. I already checked "prevent computer from sleeping if display goes to sleep". But does not help. This is very annoying. I now try to set the sleep timer to more than 1 hour. Wasting my energy and not helping. I tried connecting my HDMI screen to a HDMI to mini-Display port adaptor cable, then plug into the thunderbolt port of the MAC. Same issue, no improvement.

I may know whats going on with the wake from sleep issue. I have a Mac Mini 2012 but this  fix (see below) should work on any product running 10.8.2 Mine is at 10.10.1 and it worked.   First off you can tell if your Mac Mini is in sleep mode by looking at the small light on the front of the Mini. If its pulsing... going from bright to dim its in sleep mode. If you put your Mac in sleep mode, or it goes into sleep mode it will wake from sleep BUT ONLY for the first 4 hours. After 4 hours it will go into what is known as "safe sleep".  The light on the front will be off and you won't be able to wake your Mac. The only way to wake the Mac when in safe sleep is to hit the power button and then wait a minute or longer as your system will need to pull the data from the disk and load to ram. This is causing the issue where its not waking from sleep. You can move your mouse or hit the keys all you want but it won't wake from sleep. This is a real pain as you have to press the power button on the back of the Mac mini and wait for the system to come out of its slumber.   Here's what Apple says:
With the release of the OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 supplemental update 2.0, a new feature was introduced to enter safe sleep after four hours of the computer being connected to AC power. This is an effort to comply with the European Energy Standards (ErP Lot6). This will only occur if there is no wireless or Ethernet activity and no activity from external devices such as USB storage devices. This is normal behavior for the following models:
MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 and later)
MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012 and later)
MacBook Air (Mid 2012 and later)
    iMac (Late 2012 and later)
Mac mini (Late 2012 and later)
I have found a fix that puts an end to this nonsense..... Go to the Mac terminal (Google if you don't know how or youtube) and run the following commands (Very easy to do and if a novice like my self can do you can for sure)
    1. When in the terminal mode type:
pmset -g          This will show your current configuration of your sleep, hibernate, etc You may want to print so you can restore these values if needed.
    2. Change your standbydelay to  86400    86400 is number of seconds which is 24 hours. Here’s the command:
    sudo pmset -a standbydelay 86400
    3. Change autopoweroffdelay to 86400  Here’s the command:
    sudo pmset -a autopoweroffdelay 86400
    4. At last but not least change autopoweroff to 0   Here’s the command:
    sudo pmset -a autopoweroff  0
Run pmset -g to verify your setting have changed.  I rebooted my system and checked again to make sure.  Since I made the changes no more going into Safe sleep!!! You can change the values to what you like. I used 86400 secs. (24 hours)  I hope this helps!

  • Mini DP to HDMI does not work with Mac Mini 2014?

    Hi All,
I just upgraded from a Mac Mini 2011 i5 to a Mac Mini 2014. My old Mini worked fine running 2 displays with an HDMI cable to one monitor and a Mini Displayport to HDMI from the Thunderbolt port to another monitor. I can't seem to get the new 2014 Mini to see the monitor from either the Thunderbolt ports. Is this no longer supported?
    Thanks
    Ray

    Hi there LaureynR,
You should still be able to do this. I would recommend taking a look at the article below for troubleshooting steps.

  • Installing Windows 7 on Mac mini 2014

    Hi,
i stuck trying to install Windows 7 on a Mac mini 2014. It is connected to a monitor using the DP-to-VGA-Adaptor.
I tried both, installing from (original) Windows-DVD and from a USB-Stick (always following the Bootcamp Installation procedure).
But during the required reboot to the windows installation, the monitor will stay black and enter the sleep mode. It seems to be a display driver problem.
Is there anyone, who can help me?

Finally, i was able to solve the problem:
the problem was the DP-to-VGA-Adaptor. I connected the mini to my TV using HDMI and got a picture from the Windows installer !
    Thank you for helping me!

  • Mac Mini 2014 with Apple bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse

    Hi all,
I'm currently in the process of moving from my old MacBook to a Mac Mini 2014 and I have a couple of questions regarding functionality of the Apple bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse with the Mac Mini.
As these are the only keyboard and mouse I have available to me as I currently only have the one computer in the house, I'm wondering how I will pair them with my new Mac Mini (arriving next week for Christmas) without a wired user input device (keyboard or mouse). When I paired them with my MacBook, I of course had its trackpad and keyboard to navigate through the various steps, but as the Mac Mini does not have these, how does the pairing process work? Will I have to get my hands on a wired mouse/keyboard? I'm asking in advance because I need to get my new system up and running to start work on 27th December and so I need to know if I should pick up a cheap wired mouse/keyboard in advance.
My second question relates to the Mac Mini, Apple bluetooth keyboard and Boot Camp. Usually, when I want to boot into Windows on my MacBook, I hold down the Option/Alt key on my MacBook's built-in keyboard to be given the choice of operating systems. Sometimes when I do this using the bluetooth keyboard, it hasn't paired in time and it boots straight into OS X, so I have to wait until that has booted, shut down and then try again. Clearly, this might be a problem on a Mac Mini if I have urgent work I need to complete in Windows, so rebooting over and over until my keyboard finally pairs in time isn't desirable. Any tips here would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your help!

If you unpair your BT KB and mouse from the old computer they should pair during the initial setup of the Mini. However, sometimes they donot a wired KB and mouse is required. You can use any USB PC KB and mouse.
Once you get the BT KB to work you can use the Option key on the BT KB while booting to get your choice of OS to boot into.

  • HDMI in Mac Mini 2014

Hi people, about a month ago, I received my new Mac Mini 2014, I connect it to my Panasonic 22" LCD TV, and I get the surprise of a not good image quality, I put down the Sharpness, and Noise Reduction, but still seems blurry and fuzzy text, it don't seems clear. Start reading on internet, found the solution buying a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter, my TV got a VGA port, and it means could work, this might be the solution? or could be another? Also I try using SwitchResX but nothing changes, also my TV doesn't got the option of change the HDMI input to PC. This problem isn't to bad, but working or reading is really annoying and I know that could see better.
My Regards, to the Apple Community.

Maybe VGA would be better. I would first try:

  • Mac Mini 2014 and SATA HDD speed/negotiated speed settings question?

I have a new Mac Mini 2014 2.6GHz i5 - with the Hitachi 1TB 5400RPM drive running OS 10.10.1.  It is working well and is a worthy replacement for our 2007 Mini.
Today I was looking around the specs and settings and noticed the SATA settings for the HDD drive showed the link speed at 6 Gigabit but the negotiated speed is set to 3 Gigabit.  I have searched around and read about people having issues with other chipsets or hard drive firmware incompatibilities with other models of Mac.  Why would this be?  Is it due to the drive only supporting 3 Gigabit?  Searching for the drive model seems to indicate it supports 6 Gigabit.  Thank you in advance for all responses.

I greatly appreciate the prompt responses and link information.  So, really other than a modern SSD, or high RPM drive, you will not reach the benefits of a 6Gb connection let alone possibly max out a 3Gb connection.  Which for a mild daily use Mini would be overkill.
    Thank you.
