Mac Pro 2008 8 Core always restarting and will never boot up 1st time.
Hi guys,
Now I've been thru a lot before posting this here. At least 4 calls to apple care and a lot of hours searching the web for answers there has been lots of thing tried and tested an still the same issues.
They are :
#1 I get random restarts, these happen with no consistency.
#2 The Mac Pro will never start (very rarely does say 1 10). What happens is the grey screen with a few languages telling you to restart. I'll have to unplug the power hold down the power button to flush the whatever and try again. This sometimes takes 6 times to get it to work. We now leave her on 24/7.
This mac is a very busy professional recording studio we bought it 2nd hand with apple care. Of course we cant take it back having moved all our projects to it its not possible.
All of these issues happen without any software or hardware on or connected.
Somedays well start it up and it will just reboot within a few seconds. It seems to help if you disconnect all usb devices when you start up.
We have done the following remedies:
- Flushed the P N V ram? - Sorry I can't remember exactly but we did it with applecare and it rebooted itself while holding down a keyboard combination.
- tried a new user
- tried a new hard drive with a new OS
- done a 24hr stress test via the install DVD
- checked the firmware was the latest.
- sat the machine in front of air con unit!
- disk utilities like 4 times a day!
It does feel like the front of the machine is blowing air out....
This is becoming very embarasing loosing work etc, apart from that its an amazing machine and very, very powerful.
Can anyone help before I loose a weeks work and income by giving it to apple to check?.
What happens is the grey screen with a few languages telling you to restart.
You are experiencing a Kernel Panic as seen and described in Apple doc. HT1392.
Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Make sure you run the +Apple Hardware Test+ mentioned in there.
Here is a great MacFixIt article.
Good Luck! DALE

Mac Pro 2008 keeps shutting down and restarting
Just the other day after being shut down for a week my Mac Pro 2008 started shutting down and restarting on its own. Any idea where to begin troubleshooting?
Then they are probably completely clogged with deleted data.

The Radeon X1900 XT video card went bad in my Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon. (I tried it with a good one at the office). I found one online that was $250. I don't need the gaming capacity of this card and was wondering if there were less expensive video cards that I could use in this machine. I run Adobe Creative Suites for graphics design and have a 23" Apply display. Thank you for any help that you can provide. -PretzelMcK
Then pick up the ATI 5770 AND upgrade to 10.6.8.
Same price for a good card that will work and helps to have 1GB VRAM.
There aren't any other real choices let alone less expensive.
Even the ebay links I had and not a lot of choices. -
Mac pro 8 core memory 667 and 800MHz in the same machine
Hi there,
is it possible to install 667 and 800MHz memory in the same mac pro 8 core? Is there a performance hit to doing this? does memory need to be installed in matched pairs in a mac pro 8 core?

Have you not looked at memory item in System Profiler??
As I said, there is no benefit to using faster memory.

Can I Mirror from my Mac Pro to my AppleTV. And will it come in better the the iPhone 4s
I have my Iphone 4s on my Apple Tv now but it keeps cutting out. Can I mirror off of my mac pro? My Mac Pro is all up to date with ios5 and Lion.
I think you can only mirror from devices that runs iOS.

Mac Pro Stuck at Grey Screen, then will only boot into OS X Utilities.
My Mac Pro is stuck at Gray Screen. When I reset PRAM, it loads the OSX Utilities screen, prompting me Restore from Time Machine, Reinstall OS X, Get Help, or Disk Utility. I ran Disk Repair and Repair Premissions, same thing.... stuck at grey screen.
What will happen to the data on my HD if I choose to Reinstall the OS X? IS that the best choice? Thanks.Off hand I think your drive may be bad. But to find out you need to erase the drive, so you will need to have a recent, bootable backup.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If this does not work, then you need to replace your hard drive. -
Hi, a week ago my macbook pro wanted to do an update, so I clicked yes, it went on to do the normal and then offered to restart, since then I have not be able to restart. I have tried almost everything. When I turn on the power button, all you can hear are the fans and nothing else. Its not very old, does anyone know what I can do as I dont seem to be able to get any support from apple.
By everything, I am assuming you have tried resetting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) and PRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379). If you haven't tried this yet, please do!
See the following support document as well: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367.
The update you're talking about was the firmware update. Hopefully resetting the PRAM gets you up and running. Try resetting it 3 times in a row (hold the keys down until you hear 3 startup chimes).

My Mac pro desktop is slow! And will freeze up.
I was trying to move a lot of pictures to another user to the shared file folder. During the process I quickly discovered that it was moving it to the desktop. So I stopped the process and that's when the computer froze up. I ended up restarting the computer but no luck. I even went as far to re install the operating software. I have looked in the activity monitor, desk repair, but nothing shows a problem. What's weird is that all the other users work fine. I didn't have the time maching turned on. The computer is only about a year old with tons of free space. Some of the programs work ok before the desktop fills up. Is there a cache that I can empty? I don't have too many apps or even use the computer all that much. Please help I am somewhat new to Apple, but a fan for life!
Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
You may now be able to log in and move the files off the Desktop. Then reboot as usual. -
Windows – but Which? (What to install on Mac Pro Quad Core?)
First, apologies in advance if this seems like repetition of a recent topic, but I read through the recent "Vista vs XP" thread and it didn't quite answer my questions.
Basically, I'm planning on buying a Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.8 and installing Boot Camp and a Windows OS startup. This puts me into the notoriously tricky area of picking the right version of Windows for my needs, something I haven't really had to deal with in regards to OS X.
Basically, I'm not looking for something with too many bells and whistles or to much bloatware built into the OS. Also, I'll probably be using some older software/shareware, so backwards compatibility is an issue. On the other hand, I'd like something that works with the Quad Core architecture at its greatest efficiency.
This means I'm wondering about a couple of features that I may or may not need, and it would be of great help if you folks could point me in the right direction regarding these:
x64 – Since the Xeon processors in the Mac Pro are 64-bit processors, am I better off with "x64"-compatible versions of Windows (either Windows Vista or x64 versions of XP)? Will this cause problems starting up older programs that may not have been written for x64?
*Dual Processor Support* – the Quad Core, of course, is a dual processor – will I get better performance from a version of Windows that list "Dual Processor Support" among its features (basically, the "pro", "business", or "ultimate" versions of XP and Vista)?
If I need those features, I'm probably looking at getting either the x64 version of Windows XP Pro or the Business or Ultimate versions of Vista. However, I'm leaning against Vista based on backwards-compatibility and bloatware issues. That leaves XP Pro x64, but I might go for a more basic version of XP if I find out the x64 or DPS features aren't actually something I need. (The other "extras" in XP Pro don't sound like anything I need.)
Also, I'm likely to install Parallel Desktop at some point and don't want a version of Windows that would have compatibility problems there, either.
Anyway, any answers you folks can provide for me in this regard would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance,
PeterTruth is, I am disappointed in VMware Fusions slow walk toward full support for 64-bit and SP1 but 2.0 beta is getting there. Never used Parallels but best to check their own support forums. They also updated the 1.x version recently.
http://communities.vmware.com/community/beta/fusion
http://forums.parallels.com/
You don't need anything first, except I would start with a new hard drive for Vista, don't even do anything with it and pull OS X drive, boot Vista DVD and go from there, just as you would normally. Much easier. After it is installed is when you need Apple BootCamp from your Leopard OEM DVD, install, and then Apple Software Update will take care of 2.1. And install your graphic drivers yourself.
The problem(s) come with trying to use BootCamp Assist and setting up partitioning, and it only makes it harder - not easier - on Mac Pro (you aren't and don't want to use your OS X boot drive).

The only real issues are which graphics card to get today or in next weeks, what drives you are going with and other upgrades like memory (8 x 1GB is actually a good base ideal figure so all DIMM slots are taken up).
Barefeats has a number of benchmark articles:

WD 300GB Raptor: http://www.barefeats.com/hard103.html
- this is the drive to die for, but not natively supported
I buy most of the upgrades I need over the last ten years from OWC http://www.MacSales.com that specializes in Mac.

- until the WD "Black" series (I guess Blackbird name or SR71 are already taken) along with 3rd generation of their RE series drives. WD has been popular, reliable, with Mac Pro for last two years. Can't say the same of every vendor. Samsung F1 is also a real winner.
If you buy only one book to understand and get the most out of OS X: "Mac OS X: The Missing Manual" (Pogue has a Missing Manual Series on most everything, and this is the most popular recommended for Mac OS).
http://books.slashdot.org/books/08/02/27/1551206.shtml
I needed 3-4 for Vista before I found "Administrator's Pocket Consultant" and O'Reilly's "Vista Annoyances" are both excellent along with MS Press's "Inside Out." -
Mac Pro 12-core won't boot Mac OS X 10.6 "Server" Install DVD
I have just received my new Mac Pro 12-core today.
I tried to boot from my Mac OS X Server (10.6) Install DVD with no success.
I WAS able to "upgrade" from the preinstalled Mac OS X 10.6.4, but I need a clean installation.
I first thought there was a problem with the internal DVD drive, but I could boot the provided Mac OS X Install DVD. I also tried to boot the "Server" DVD from a firewire external DVD drive, with no success. I even tried "target" mode, using the DVD drive from a Mac Book Pro, with no success.
The server install DVD is not corrupted, as I used it recently on my 2007 Mac Pro 8-core.

I have a late 2008 Mac Pro Quad Core 2x2.8 Intel Xeon with Lion 10.7.5… do I need Maverick and will this hardware support the Airplay Mirroring?
It doesn't mention anything about a Mac Pro. So no.

If your computer did support it, you would still need 10.8 or 10.9 for Airplay to work. -
Mac Pro 2008 always crash after sleep and after first start
Hello, new in the forum,
2 years ago, I replaced the main disk of a Mac Pro 2008 for a SSD Samsung 470 256 Go.
Until then, it always crashed 1 or 5 minutes after sleep mode (which I didn't used much), and not always 10 to 15 minutes after the first start of the day.
No matter if I was working on it or not… Suitcase installed or not (no font problem here). Rest of the day was fine (if no sleep !).
The difference of speed was so big and "good" that I dealed with it. I though that the Mac Pro was a little old for the SSD technology, and that Apple would fix it, with chance…
2 weeks ago, I installed Maverick :
I got crashs during the work flow too. I needed to re-start 3 times at least… Re-start without extension was ok (or not), re-start, crash, re-start without extension, restart ok. I used Onyx, did PRAM too. And sometimes, I needed to re-install Maverick or even to do a clean-install !
So I suspected the Samsung 470 for all (sleep and work crashs) and replaced it for a Samsung 840 Pro 512 Go.
And the Mac Pro returned to Mountain Lion.
Not really better : no crash one day (yeeeees!) and crash after the first start the next day (nooooo!). Every time I tested sleep mode, it crashed.
My system :
Mac Pro 3.1 - 2,8 GHz - Quad
Mountain Lion, 10 Go ram DDR2, ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, 30' cinema display.
Adobe CS5 alone (minimal install) with Onyx to repair after each crash.
Could it be the video card, the mother board, the age of the boy ?
Thanks a lot !
Christophe SEdit !
I said that Finder and apps were blocked after 10 seconds (without extension).
But it was to clic on Launchpad that blocked all, and 5 minutes later it works again.
I did clic again on Launchpad, it blocked and 2 minutes later it appeared full screen but with rainbow circle, and quit.
- Restarted with extensions. Kernel panic!
- Restarted the mac and the grey screen with Apple blocked, without any mouse this time. 15 minutes later, still blocked.

Mac pro 8 core early 2008 problem is you have to unplug it for 2-3hrs when you finish work so it will turn on effortlessly again. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Thanks,
LouOverheating? Install a temperature monitor like iStat Pro, iStat Menus, Temperature Monitor, Hardware Monitor, etc. and see if you are overheating.
When was the last time you blew out the dust from inside your machine?
I don't understant the "unplug" statement. Do yo mean just turn off? -
I installed LION on my mac pro 2008 and it's alway's pop with " there was a problem connecting to the server " Time Capsule" .How can i remove this popup. My Time machine is working fine and also rename it with less than 7 karakters. But the popup keeps on coming with the old name.
I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary? How do I do this if so?
I have attached the screen shots of all the settings.
Thanks again for your help.
