  • Mac Pro 2008 Can't start Windows 7 / 8 Installer

I'm trying to load Windows 8 (And have previously tried everything with Windows 7) on my Mac Pro early 2008 with Mountain Lion, and cannot get the installers to initiate.
When I start the bootcamp assistant and reboot, my mac freezes before ever getting to the installer. When I reboot and hold option to manually select the installer, it freezes as soon as I select it. I've tried this from a DVD, USB, and even an install partition i setup on my HD, all with the same freezing results. This is a legitimate copy of Windows 8 system builder I'm working with and have installed it perfectly in Parallels.
I should note I upgraded my video card a long time ago to a gt 120, so I'm wondering if the video card might be the problem. I've installed Windows 7 with this video card in the past so I'm guessing this is a Mountain Lion/Bootcamp 5 issue.
Has anyone else with a Mac Pro 2008 succesfully installed Windows 7/8 from Mountain Lion/Bootcamp 5?
Any input would be immensely appreciated!

There are no Windows 8 Bootcamp drivers. Windows 8 is not supported.
Use Parallels or Fusion to install Windows 8. By doing so you eliminate the need for drivers since the virtual machine creates virtual hardware and drivers.
Once the Windows 8 Bootcamp drivers are developed and released you can then install using Bootcamp Assistant.
Read this forum. Some people are posting that they had some success with the Bootcamp install. but if you have to rely on your computer then don't take the chance.

  • Mac Pro 2008 Won't Start Up without Option Key

    Hi.
I cannot start up my Mac Pro 2008 without holding down the Option key.
My Snow Leopard internal hard drive failed, so I replaced my failed internal drive with a brand new one and put the cloned backup onto it.  I also have other internal drives and partitions with systems 10.5.6, 10.7.5, and 10.8.4.  I briefly added a Mavericks partition, but removed it.
I THINK the problems started after the HD failure, but I'm not sure.  I added no peripherals recently, although I did add 4 gigs of RAM which were faulty and I had to replace them.  But they test fine with a memory test.
If I Restart, the Mac comes up with a grey screen and won't boot into any system.
If I Shut down, then Start up, I get the gray screen.
In System Preferences, I can see every single possible Startup Drive, but no matter which one I select, the same gray screen happens on boot up.
However, if I hold down the Option key (from startup or restart), then I can choose any startup volume and it starts just fine.
I've run Disk Utility many times for Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions on every volume.  I've run Disk Warrior.  I've zapped the SMC/PRAM, etc.  I've tried starting up from external firewire drives and USB drives.  No matter which drive I select in StartUp Disk Preferences, it's the same grey screen.
I've tried starting up with ZERO peripherals attached except for USB keyboard and mouse.
I've taken out all startup and login items.
I'm don't know what else to try.  I don't mind using the Option key every time, but I'm worried it's a sign of impending problems.
    Thanks!

Barry, thanks for your reply. Yes, that's what I mean when I wrote:
"In System Preferences, I can see every single possible Startup Drive, but no matter which one I select, the same gray screen happens on boot up."
I selected a default startup volume in sys preferences, closed it, and restarted.  I tried every volume possible in turn.
    But thanks for doublechecking

  • Mac Pro 2008 always crash after sleep and after first start

    Hello, new in the forum,
2 years ago, I replaced the main disk of a Mac Pro 2008 for a SSD Samsung 470 256 Go.
Until then, it always crashed 1 or 5 minutes after sleep mode (which I didn't used much), and not always 10 to 15 minutes after the first start of the day.
No matter if I was working on it or not… Suitcase installed or not (no font problem here). Rest of the day was fine (if no sleep !).
The difference of speed was so big and "good" that I dealed with it. I though that the Mac Pro was a little old for the SSD technology, and that Apple would fix it, with chance…
    2 weeks ago, I installed Maverick :
I got crashs during the work flow too. I needed to re-start 3 times at least… Re-start without extension was ok (or not), re-start, crash, re-start without extension, restart ok. I used Onyx, did PRAM too. And sometimes, I needed to re-install Maverick or even to do a clean-install !
So I suspected the Samsung 470 for all (sleep and work crashs) and replaced it for a Samsung 840 Pro 512 Go.
And the Mac Pro returned to Mountain Lion.
Not really better : no crash one day (yeeeees!) and crash after the first start the next day (nooooo!). Every time I tested sleep mode, it crashed.
    My system :
    Mac Pro 3.1 - 2,8 GHz - Quad
Mountain Lion, 10 Go ram DDR2, ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, 30' cinema display.
Adobe CS5 alone (minimal install) with Onyx to repair after each crash.
Could it be the video card, the mother board, the age of the boy ?
    Thanks a lot !
    Christophe S

    Edit !
I said that Finder and apps were blocked after 10 seconds (without extension).
But it was to clic on Launchpad that blocked all, and 5 minutes later it works again.
I did clic again on Launchpad, it blocked and 2 minutes later it appeared full screen but with rainbow circle, and quit.
    - Restarted with extensions. Kernel panic!
    - Restarted the mac and the grey screen with Apple blocked, without any mouse this time. 15 minutes later, still blocked.
    - Forced restart without extension. Here are the reports of Kernel Panic and EtreCheck:

  • Mac Pro 2008 Apple Cinema Displays are black and there are start up issues

I have a Mac Pro 2008 Dual quad 2.8 GHz. I have two Apple Cinema Displays (graphics are the standard ATI Radeon HD 2600 – 2 dual link DVI. I have 4 2-GB RAM sticks (8 GB total).
Neither of my displays are showing anything. Their power lights are on but they are completely black throughout the start up process. In addition when I try to boot up with both graphics cards installed, I get nothing – no beeps no chimes. If just one card is installed (either card in either slot) the computer beeps, chimes and makes the sounds of booting up, but not a flicker on the displays. RAM does not seem to be the issue as I have tried booting with several configurations of RAM sticks with no negative or positive effects. I tried booting up with Hard Drives 1 & 2 removed with no effect.  I have tried several different start up moods and have reset PRAM.
My guess is that there is something wrong with the motherboard. Or is it possible that both graphics cards are bad?

The "least intensive" thing you can do is hold down Alt/Option at Startup. Thsi invokes the all-in-ROM Startup Manager, which will light up the screen gray or blue, then attempt to draw an Icon for each potentially-bootable Volume attached (if any). It works as if in slow motion, so you must be patient. If no activity after about two minutes you may count that as a failure.
The next most intensive is to attempt to boot from an incorruptible source of software, such as an Installer/Utilities DVD. This again uses the "one-size-fits-all" display driver, and attempts to load software off the DVD. The dark colored Apple is loaded off a drive -- it is not present inside your Mac.
The next most intensive step is to attempt to boot into Safe Mode. This also uses the "one-size-fits-all" display Driver, and does a disk check as it starts up, adding five minutes to the startup time. It then drwas a login screen and deamds your username and password, even if you normally auto-login.

  • Mac Pro (2008) do not start up

When i try to start my Mac Pro (2008) i only get the Fan to run with high speed and the power light/status light flash with high speed continusly. No video on the screen and no HD acctivity. Do someone know about this problem? I have to reset the PRAM and reset the SMC with no better result.

Yep, I get the same, but only occasionally, as I mostly put it to "sleep" but when away for length of time (e.g. a week or so), I turn it off:
When the fans spin and nothing happens, just press the power on button once more and it switches off.  Press the power on button again, and it should start up.
Have a look in the manual and see if your logic board battery needs replacing.  (page 46 of the manual)

  • My Mac pro 2008, not running after the Apple logo, i rebooting and i rebooting

My Mac Pro 2008 no boot afther the Logo Apple, reboot, reboot and reboot only, and in XP, the graphic is pertubed with bad graphics ... the mémory it's good, and i thinks my card graphic is out. SRY for my english, it's not my language. Help my please, my apple care is finished 10/2011, and i will repared itself. Many thanks. Alain Muno

Not saying this IS your problem, but … I just went through avery similar problem with Mac Pro3,1. Here is my story.
On boot of any Mac OP system drive, internal or externalHDD, (Lion or Snow Leopard), original Mac Pro install CD, Snow Leopard CD,nothing.  (Would only go to gray screen, apple logo, spinning gear that would stop spinning after about a minute.)  But, it would boot on XP drive.  However, in XP, on Windows black startupscreen, had alternating columns of two different patters of blue dots and XPgraphics were not as they should be (larger icons on desk top, slow response, different size of desk top (maybe 600x400 when it should have been1024x768).  Supplied hardware test showedno failures.  Took it to shop.  Their better diagnostics showed nofailures.  All peripherals (my drives, myCDs, etc, disconnected.  (NOTE: they didnot try a new video card since they did not have one.)  Still would not start even using their drives(external or internal).  Shop tried a newlogic board.  That did not work and theyput the original one back in.  Shop saidall they could come up with was new processors. This was not a cost effective option and they had none to try.
After thinking about it more, I figured it could be thevideo card: the original 8800 GT that came with the Mac: that it was so bad itwould not start in Mac OS but would limp along in XP.  I was all set to buy another vid card one-bay just to try.  While doing thatresearch, came across several articles on the Internet that discussed vid cardfailure due to micro-cracks in some solder joints.  These develop due to age/heat cycles.  The proposed fix was to ‘reflow’ the solder.  Figured it was worth a try before spendingthe money on a new vid card.  Found thesedetailed instructions on youtube.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7um_hZYom4  I followed the procedure, put the vid cardback in, and now it works just fine.
I did not and would not do this until I had ruled outeverything else.  But, it has worked forothers and it did work for me.

  • Mac Pro 2008 won't boot from install disc - black screen

    Hello,
I recently purchased a new hard drive to replace the original that came with my Mac Pro 2008.  I was able to format the new drive using Disk Utility. I am now at the point where I need to install OS X onto the new drive, but the computer refuses to boot from the disc. The disc is recognized by the computer (I can access the disc and am able to use the BootCamp applications, etc.) but I just get a black screen when trying to boot directly from the disc. The computer boots fine otherwise.
    I have tried the following:
I have tried using both the gray install disc that came with the computer and the Snow Leopard Install DVD disc.
I have tried booting using the "C" key and the "option" key but still receive a black screen following the chime (I've held these down for several minutes).
I have tried restarting from either install disc using the Bootcamp Assistant.
I have tried running the installation software to get it to restart from the disc.
I have tried a combination of the drives, i.e. trying to boot from the discs with just the new drive installed, just the original drive installed, and with both in bay1 and 2.
Everything results in the computer starting up, hearing the chime, and then nothing..just black screen. I have the original drive partitioned with BootCamp with OSX Snow Leopard and Windows 7 installed (I don't know that that matters).
I am at a loss as to what to try next. It doesn't seem like the superdrive because it is recognizing the disc, it just won't boot from it.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Clone should be a must  and easy to do and learn (learn by doing! 2)
6800 would 'qualify' as 5x70 series flashed etc and same rule: 10.6.5
In the past there was 10.4.6, 10.5.6, but not 10.6.6 - even though strong need for such a DVD.
    10.6.8 DVD would  be excellent
Lion or ML - buy, download, make an installer flash card would be what I would do at this point.
Then keep both - dual boot as you learn and test and see what ML does and waht you had that required Rosetta to support PowerPC. See www.roaringapps.com about that.
With Carbon Coyp Cloner - was share, now commercial, great utility been around since 10.2.2 at least - this time 2003. 10 yrs.
You can clone the system folders, you can even selectively choose. You can skip copy of most of your home account and do that separately to another drive if  you want.
Clone Windows with Paragon or WinClone and use Windows 7 or 8 DVD to do a system repair (automatic) or to edit the BCD file. It can and should - and all you do is boot Windows 7 DVD w/ only the one drive present and go at it. Piece of cake. But yes, Windows gets fussy if you change or remove or move. BCD to the rescue. A proper program for cloning like Paragon's "Clone OS" meant for going from disk drives to SSDs, knows that and how to do it.
Back to how to clone etc:
    Clone
Disk utility has RESTORE which will also clone your system but not the Lion Recovery partition. Oddly  Apple did not 'endorse' making bootable clone of the system which works too but most choose Carbon Copy Cloner - it works more consistently; it allows for smart update of the backup volume. Both can backup to a sparse disk image if desired.

The DVD is dependent on your hardware. And your hardware changed. The drivers for the 5780 and 6xxx are bundled in the OS and lacking. Minimum build thing.
Put the new drive anywhere you want. Does not matter. Can move it later. Can be drive bay 0-3 or a Firewire external or under the DVD drive.
When you clone pull the old drive and boot from the newly cloned.
After that keep a backup clone around all the time. Takes less than 10 minutes to do a smart update to copy just the changes to keep it current. So you have working copy of the system. I keep Clone "A" that I keep "as was" the system as of last month or whatever (like 10.7.4 before upgrade to 7.5).
Comes easier after doing it once and have all your ducks in a row.

  • Mac Pro 2008 8 Core always restarting and will never boot up 1st time.

    Hi guys,
Now I've been thru a lot before posting this here. At least 4 calls to apple care and a lot of hours searching the web for answers there has been lots of thing tried and tested an still the same issues.
    They are :
#1 I get random restarts, these happen with no consistency.
#2 The Mac Pro will never start (very rarely does say 1 10). What happens is the grey screen with a few languages telling you to restart. I'll have to unplug the power hold down the power button to flush the whatever and try again. This sometimes takes 6 times to get it to work. We now leave her on 24/7.
This mac is a very busy professional recording studio we bought it 2nd hand with apple care. Of course we cant take it back having moved all our projects to it its not possible.
All of these issues happen without any software or hardware on or connected.
Somedays well start it up and it will just reboot within a few seconds. It seems to help if you disconnect all usb devices when you start up.
We have done the following remedies:
    - Flushed the P N V ram? - Sorry I can't remember exactly but we did it with applecare and it rebooted itself while holding down a keyboard combination.
    - tried a new user
    - tried a new hard drive with a new OS
    - done a 24hr stress test via the install DVD
    - checked the firmware was the latest.
    - sat the machine in front of air con unit!
    - disk utilities like 4 times a day!
It does feel like the front of the machine is blowing air out....
This is becoming very embarasing loosing work etc, apart from that its an amazing machine and very, very powerful.
Can anyone help before I loose a weeks work and income by giving it to apple to check?.

What happens is the grey screen with a few languages telling you to restart.
You are experiencing a Kernel Panic as seen and described in Apple doc. HT1392.
Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Make sure you run the +Apple Hardware Test+ mentioned in there.
Here is a great MacFixIt article.

  • Replacing old HD with SSD and Hybrid HD Mac Pro 2008, 10.7.5

My old 1tb 7200 rpm drive has started doing some quirky things, so I decided to upgrade to a 240 Gb SSD for my OS and App's, and I would install the 2TB Hybrid drive to hold the home folder with movies, pics, music. So I formatted my 2TB disk in disk utilities.
I copied, by dragging and dropping my home folder from old drive to new 2TB, I went into system preferences, under User/Group created a new user at the administrator level, and set the new user to open at login.
When I restarted it was the old galaxy screen, the dock had moved back to the bottom and it was set up different.I also can open Iphoto or itunes and they are empty, "The folder “Pictures” can't be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents", and the same goes for Itunes, I haven't tried FCPX or the Adobe Products I use.
"So, I think well I probably just need to set up my ssd with my OS and App's so the new disk can see my prefrences", so I format, use Carbon Copy Cloner, deselecting, under the User tab, my old User and the New user I had created for the new 2TB drive, because I have no room for it on the 240 GB drive. And, I deselected some apps I didn't want to come over. I cloned it, changed my start up disk in my preferences, and restarted.
I still get the same thing when I logged into my new 2TB Drive. I am planning on keeping my old drive for archive, and I also backed up to an external using Time Machine before I started messing with the new drives.
    Please Help!
    Mac Pro 2008

Mac OS X is inherently a Multi-User system designed to protect each User's data from all other Users. A new User does not have access to your existing files, including the desktop Preferences and the Dock Preferences
You need to do one of:
    a) change all the permissions all around -OR-
    b) make this change without creating a new User (e.g., by cloning your original User or by Installing a new version of Mac OS X and using Assistants to connect to the old User data. This guide can help:

  • Mac Pro 2008 keeps shutting down and restarting

Just the other day after being shut down for a week my Mac Pro 2008 started shutting down and restarting on its own. Any idea where to begin troubleshooting?

Then they are probably completely clogged with deleted data.

  • My mac pro (2008) shuts down before it can boot

Hi, my mac Pro doesn't starts anymore. This morning it tried to boot but after 10/15 seconds it shut down. Now it doesn't even starts anymore. I already tried all the reset process but nothing happened. Is it a dead logic board or can it be something else? I have this mac since 2008 and never had problems before. Also I never changed or added RAM or else, I only substitute the DVD/CD reader about one year ago without problems. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Buy some RAM, a couple extra drives. For backup, to clone OS X,, drives fail, and they get faster and better. Most people upgrade and have 4 internal and some external drives, plus the default RAM is only enough to boot and run one or two small basic apps. 4GB should be minimum and 8GB will help anyone.
Use your 10.6 DVD but I would do a clean install on a new drive.
    Then use Setup Assistant.
    Repair your old drive.
    Start cloning your good system.
    Setup TimeMachine.
Safe Boot is a good first step.
Not sure what reset processes but I assume you mean you reset SMC and zap PRAM
Try booting from OS X DVD - and if you have trouble, then remove any and all internal drives and unplug everything but the kb/mouse.

  • Apple Mac Pro 2008 dual 2.8ghz quad core

    Hey guys,
Ive got a real brain teaser. I have a apple mac pro 2008 dual 2.8ghz quad core that wont boot.
The leds on the memory test good its all tested in another mac and working well.
The 9 leds are reading as follows 2nd led lit yellow. Led 9,8,7 Green- which from my research is good.
Ive also reset the cmos battery and vram, nothing.
Pulled the memory and video card and re-seated them also nothing.
The last thing i tryed was shut the computer down sit for 30 seconds then held alt and got the install mac os screen not a hard drive option.
Which leads me to think its not seeing the hard drive?
    Any suggestions?

    Starts up with fans
    Makes the apple chime
The chime is generated in software when the first portion of the power-on self test has passed.Your Mac is working and has enough working RAM memory to start up.
You still may have problems with drives, the software on those drives, or your graphics card.
    apple logo comes up
The dark gray Apple is loaded by the ROM boot loader in the first blob of software (before the file system is initialized). Its presence indicates your Mac can get some stuff off a Hard Drive, and seeing it indicates your graphic card can display something in a primitive way.
with spinning gear and just sits there for hours
It is stuck booting up something. Verbose Mode (hold Command-V at startup) will show you the parade of messages. The last five will tell you what happened.

  • Cannot install Vista Ultimate 64bits on Mac Pro 2008

    Hello,
I'm trying to install Vista Ultimate 64bits on my new Mac Pro (2008, 2x Quad Core, 3x 500GBHDD, 16 GB Ram), but Vista is unable to find a correct partition type.
The first thing I did was to install a 4th HD, and I constantly received an error 0x80004005 which seems to be too generic.
Then I tried to install it on the 3rd HD (Bay 2 is where my OS X startup disk is located btw) but here no way neither....Windows cannot find a valid partition.....
I tried to partition it manually in MBR...same problem....
    Then with BootCamp assistant...same problem...
I also tried to use Vista Business 64 SP1, same problem...
Do you have any idea ?
    Thanks,
    Patrick

    Hello,
Thanks for your answer, but unfortunately I'm still stuck...
    To resume the situation :
I put a brand new 250GB SATA in the bay 4.
I start Bootcamp Assistant and tell him that I want to use this new disk for Windows and then start Vista x64 install.
Vista sees 2 partitions on this new disk :
    Disk 3 Partition 1 : 200 MB (Primary)
    Disk 3 Partition 2 : 230 GB (Primary)
If I try to use the P2 for the install, I have to format it first. Once formatted, Vista says : This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.
If I try to use the 200 MB (just for fun..), then I also have to format it, but here I receive the error message 0x8000xxxx
    So clearly I'm lost...
Could it be related to the 16 GB RAM ? Too much for Vista ?? I don't believe as this is Vista x64...
    Thanks for your help, ideas..
    Patrick

  • Replacement mac pro 2008 motherboard

    Hi,
It looks as if the logic board in my dual quad core 3Ghz mac 2008 mac pro has died.
Rebooted it last night and I just get the grey screen, apple logo and spinning icon
Removed all peripherals and network connections - no change
tried to boot into safe mode and the sequence gets so far and then the machine shuts down
removed all internal disks apart from system disk - no change
replaced system disk with backup system disk - no change
reset the EFI - no change
removed some 4Gbyte memory DIMMS I'd installed recently - no change
Took backup system disk into work and put into same age chassis and disk booted just fine.
    So
1). Found a mac pro 2008 used motherboard for £345 on ebay - eek!!
2). If all I need is a motherboaed, can I install a newer mac pro motherboard in the chassis I've currently got?
    Rgds
    Alex

have to agree, $600+ part www.dvwarehouse.com
sounds like they really did not address (all) the problems and went for a superficial renstall the system with a new drive instead.
10.7.5 may not be ideal OS for 3,1 2008s
FBDIMMs are cheap now and higher quality, $64 8GB (I'll bet they soaked you though)
    SMC Reset for won't start
the OEM graphic card, those are a MUST replace list, esp for 10.7.5 but for anyone too
    10.8.3 makes sense
you have to avoid any old plugin drivers software now or go back to 10.6.8 which some find more reliable and because they rely on Rosetta to run PowerPC coded software.
